England’s victory at The Oval has helped them draw level with Australia in the ICC World Test Championship at the end of their drawn five-match series.

Australia and England are now both on 56 points on the points table led by India, the only team so far to garner the maximum 120 points available in a series. Sri Lanka and New Zealand are also ahead of The Ashes rivals with 60 points each after their two-match series ended in a 1-1 draw last month.

Points in the WTC are evenly distributed over the number of matches in a series (two to five), the points varying from 60 for each match of a two-Test series to 24 for each match of a five-Test series, like in The Ashes. England and Australia won 48 points for winning two matches each and each eight for the second Test since a draw gives teams one-thirds of the points at stake in a match.

India, who beat the West Indies 2-0 in a two-match away series, will get a chance to consolidate their position when they take on South Africa in a three-match home series next month.

The ICC World Test Championship has been introduced to add context to the longest format of the game with nine teams featuring in matches which were decided by the Member countries as per their bilateral agreements. Bangladesh and Pakistan are the other teams in the championship.

The top two teams at the end of the league will advance to the final, which will be played in the UK in June 2021 with the winners crowned the World Test Champions.

Australia will have wanted to win outright in England for the first time in 18 years, so it's a disappointing end and Paine will be rueing his toss decision.

Overall it's two flawed teams probably getting the result they deserved though Australia with their fast bowling depth, and of course the immovable Steve Smith, proved decisive at key moments. Bar Smith, both batting units look shaky but Rory Burns and Marnus Labuschagne showed grit and earned a long run.

Root probably has earned an extension but I remain unconvinced by his captaincy and planning.

There are a few farewells too. Trevor Bayliss ends his coaching stint on a high while Gower and Botham bid goodbye to the Sky commentary box. Channel 5 meanwhile have lost the rights to TV highlights after 13 years - BBC are taking over next summer starting with the Tests vs West Indies and Pakistan.

Nobody was awarded them, the Aussies are the holders and keep them as England failed to win the series.

Timing plays a significant role in human emotions.

If England were 2-1 up and would have lost this Test to tie the series, Root and the other players would have have been heartbroken.

Now that they came into this match 2-1 down, they would be quite relieved and perhaps even proud to have saved themselves from a series defeat.

Similarly, had Australian won this match to retain the Ashes, they would have been delighted. I am sure they are still very happy, but they would also be disappointed because they failed to win the series after going into the final Test with a 2-1 lead.

If Australia won this test they would retained the Ashes and if they lost they still would have. Ask any Australian player or fan before series they would taken any result to retain the Ashes. Now get over yourself. England team and fans are down for not winning the Ashes back. And every captain since 2005 has won the Ashes back in England except Root and you think they are proud of themselves lol. Might be a poor England side but Australian side wasn't that great too so England would be more annoyed losing to them on home soil. Paine has a bit of luck with Anderson getting injured and England only having four bowlers at Edgbaston, then with the weather denying England at Lord’s.

Congratulations to England on winning the match, and congratulations to both the teams on such a well fought series. It´s the first drawn Ashes series after 1972 from what I remember. A really competitive series.

I know I run the risk of sounding extremely grumpy and bitter, but I think I´ve never seen a team get so lucky in a year to have packed two major achievements on the back of massive help from the umpires. England "won" the World Cup due a stupid rule and also an umpiring error, and now have drawn the Ashes thanks to the umpire not giving Stokes LBW out in the third Test match. A painful error during the most crucial stage of the match.

either way, congratulations to every England supporter over here on the forum. Stokes is a living legend and Broad is.... well, Broad is Broad, isn´t he? However, I´m not too convinced with Root´s capabilities as a captain, and also some of their batsmen, such as Roy, Bairstow etc., need to adjust their game for the five-day game.

Australia can be very proud of their efforts. Playing away from home, that too in the home of a team as capable as England, to have had just one bad match out of five Test matches is an achievement itself. A proud effort!

I think the turning point was the the runs that Buttler got with the tail in the first innings. A 220-ish total was brought to 290s and it gave England a total to bowl with. Batting fourth in a series-decider was never going to be an easy ask.

2-2 is flattering for Australia, they rode entirely on the back of Smith who was batting like Bradman. Australia's batting is minnow and they well get owned every time Smith or the bowlers fail (which happened this test, no Smith ton = easy England win)

NZ were actually pretty poor in the tournament. They were lucky to play the easier games first, had their India game washed out and lost multiple games prior to the semi final. In fact they lost three games in a row and their win against West Indies was by the barest of margins.

And in the semi final they were on the end of a collective indian batsman brainfade and even then almost lost from an in-loseable position.

They didn’t even deserve to be in the final to begin with to be honest.

If England play NZ 10 times today, England will win 7-3. Hence, its fair to say England were a better team in ODIs.

However, on the day finals was played, I would argue that NZ played better cricket or on par with England and were robbed by sheer bad luck.
