Pietersen was simply ahead of his time but had he played for England now, he wouldn't have stood out in ODIs like he did in his era. England were a poor ODI side when he was in his peak and he was the only quality player. Similarly, when Morgan first burst onto the scene in 2009, him and Pietersen were the only two dynamic batsmen, so they looked better than they were.

Peak Pietersen would easily make the current ODI team, but he won't be a standout player because of the presence of players like Root, Hales, Roy, Buttler, Stokes etc.

Morgan career was ended by a chucker, people overly judge him based on that series vs pak in the uae when in reality the man is a highly valued batsman for any test line up in the world down the order
