England:

1 Alex Hales, 2 Jason Roy, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Jos Buttler, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 Mark Wood

South Africa:

1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Chris Morris, 9 Andile Phehlukwayo, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Imran Tahir

South Africa started well but its all gone wrong after Rabada in the third over got the ball to move in, beat Hales, somehow missed the stumps and beat the keeper for four byes. Hales now looking ominous.

Pitch is very flat which is sadly the norm in ODI cricket these days so will be hard work for the bowlers.

This pitch is so flat. IPL pitches offer more assistance to the bowler

I would hate to be a bowler on this pitch

Nice over by Morris.

We're overflowing with decent all-rounders these days: Parnell, Morris, Phehlukwayo and Pretorius. Yet, only one isn't playing :)))

Rabada looks good with the bat. I will not be surprised if he turns out to be another allrounder

England 339/6 (50.0 ov)
South Africa 161/3 (27.1 ov)
South Africa require another 179 runs with 7 wickets and 22.5 overs remaining

Looks like game on after two quick wickets with ABDV and JP the new men in. 161-3, need 179 in 22.3 overs, RRR: 7.95

Moeen really smashed the Saffers today. A very underrated player.

Moeen really smashed the Saffers today. A very underrated player.

Wasted down the order but it's a very strong line up. Moeen always responds when the naysakers begin to chat a bit of pup! egg on all their faces today  Moeen has won the Beard off as well, his Knock was better then Amla's :afridi

Big Mac The Beard has HUMILIATED all these fans of the old boy club, what DESTRUCTIVE peformance today, simply INCREDIBLE! I've never seen such CLEAN HITTING before and some of those wristy flicks would make Anwar proud, mah gawd what a player

We're you at! We're you at! THE BEARD THAT WILL ALWAYS BE FEARED!

When Moeen Ali's HAND goes UP! your MOUTH goes SHUT !

Moeen has always been a very good ODI player. Great to watch in full flow, and his pies are not exposed in this format. With the bat, he is a superior version of Hafeez who is a superior version with the ball. The only problem is, he is making a superior batsman (Bairstow) sit on the bench. The only question mark in this incredible batting unit was the captain himself, who has hit a tremendous purple patch over the last 2-3 series.

Moeen will probably start the Champions Trophy based on today's performance, but both him and Bairstow can consider themselves unlucky. They'd start for almost every other ODI team.

OH MY GOODNESS! they just can't STOP HIM! THE MOST UNPLAYABLE DELIVERY in THE HISTORY OF CRICKET by an off spinner! SENSATIONAL BOWLING by MOEEN ALI! Morris didn't look like he belonged out there, SA are 6 down

Super Human Stuff by a man who only started to learn how to bowl at the international level and he is out bowling that overrated hack Rashid who is a "veteran" :))) there are a line of brummie village batsman waiting to have a go at Moeen including my nan :))) economy of 7.11 by Rashid, HORRENDOUS!

De Villiers out... that's the end for the Proteas

Duminy and Miller must be dropped

Bairstow isn't really a #7 batsman. Moeen isn't either but he can slog when needed and he also offers England 10 quiet overs of spin. He's a very versatile player which is why he will always manage to make the final XI because he can open, bat in the middle or as part of the tail, along with his aforementioned utility as a spinner.

That Hafeez example is inaccurate. Yes, they are both spin-bowling all-rounders and have a similar role to play with ball in hand but vastly different batsmen. Hafeez is the better top-order batsman while Moeen is more explosive and better when batting in the middle or lower-middle order.

nah man, hafeez is definitely a better batsman as well...

Hafeez is an insult to cricket, don't insult the beard please :amla

Awful batting by South Africa, other than their three most dependable batsmen. Duminy, Miller, Morris, etc are really mediocre as a support cast. They've all had some good performances here and there but they fail most often than not.

Moeen Ali's economy in the modern game is outstanding, he can hold an end and you can't ask more from him

De Villiers failing in a pressure chase. Better than Viv Richards my foot.

I am comparing them in terms of aesthetics. Both look wonderful when they are in touch, but have issues with consistency. Moeen though, can hold his own against better bowling units. Hafeez will be a better fit down the order because of his weakness against the new ball. If he would have been selected for a better team, he would most probably have played as an all-rounder lower down the order.

Woah, there, pal. No need to pick on Mo's best bud. He destroyed Morgan's countrymen a couple of games ago and he's a useful bowler when the pitch offers a bit of turn.

THE BEST IN THE WORLD! GREATEST EVER ENGLAND ALL ROUNDER SINCE BOTHAM! Take a BOW SON! THE BEARD IS UNSTOPPABLE! The Invincible ABDV departs and has no answer to the MIGHT OF THE GRANDEST of BEARDs

Fluke wicket for Rashid after Moeen softened up the Saffer batsman for him :mv

Yeah, very useful. Also seems to get the best batsmen out too, which must be frustrating for his haters. Remember him getting Younis and Misbah out plenty of times and this isn't the first time he's outfoxed ABD.

7 for 85 on a pitch that is as flat as you'll see in England.

Scoreboard pressure but also some very soft dismissals.

Entirely predictable capitulation this. Amla and de Villiers will never play any innings of substance in a mega run chase. Faf and QdK are the only men in this lineup.

Except he had 0 support, yet again. Please stop with this 'AB is a choker' routine, it's tantamount to lying at this stage.

Exactly, I fail to see how he "failed" here. He played a very fine innings but had no help from his lower order. Games are won by teams, not individuals. England are winning because they played well as a team, South Africa had a few individuals who performed well but the team as a whole failed.

Am tearing up man am so lucky to be alive right now, Moeen Ali is a once in a life time talent; England are so damn lucky, GLORIOUS is the best way to describe him on every level I just have no words, with a tear in me eye this is one of the greatest moments in the history of English cricket. After what happened in Manchester Moeen is putting smiles on all our faces, our wounds are healing slowly; this is so cool! loving it!

Fact is Moeen Ali is unplayable, even on a flat pitch the Saffers can't handle him

lol at those saying Hafeez is a better batsmen. Moeen is a proper top order batsmen who has been hard done by the fact that England have so many options in the batting department. Batting at 7 isn't a natural spot for him but he's been doing a decent job and holding his own. Hafeez is total rubbish against decent bowling sides and has too much of an ego to bat at 7.

Moeen Ali is a better all-rounder than Ben Stokes, at least in the Limited Overs. Keep the IPL of this discussion though.

Champions Trophy is yours to lose England.

Even if not blessed with the best bowling attack, at keast they're guaranteed runs to defend from their explosive batting lineup capable of scoring 300 even if Joe Root, Jason Roy, Jos Buttler AND Ben Stokes fail !

You know this is a lie, right? I mean, just look at the scorecard for today's... Oh yes, "stats don't matter". Carry on.

Just bring in Bairstow for Rashid, am not sure why Adil is even playing cricket? I think his selection was sifarish, basically a lot of inferior cricketers tend to whine in Bradford about not being picked and we just gave this recreational cricketer a chance to keep a not so civil vocal bunch silent. Rashid is the pity quota of the England cricket team.

Not just stokes but in the world and the most valuable cricketer across all formats in world cricket, Moeen is factually the best player on the planet right now and England need to put him on a damn pedastal and wrap him in cotton wool because cricketers like him only come out of England once in a lifetime, All Hail THE BEARD !

Moeen having a net out there and taking it a bit easy now, we need to make the game a bit interesting for the audience who have spent their hard earned cash; the Beard is so generous

I don't know if you're being serious or sarcastic but FEAR THE BEARD!

No need of looking at today's scorecard. We have seen enough of the celebrated duo to over the last decade or so to realize that they will not take South Africa anywhere in moments like these. As far as Faf is concerned, he is an inferior player overall, but he seems to have a heart for big moments. QdK is the real superstar of this team. Already the best ODI opener SA have produced, he has overtaken Gibbs, Kirsten and of course Amla.

SA don't want to peak too early so are just getting all the chokes out the way prior to CT, Amla and ABDV are simply too outstanding not to come good eventually; cream always rises to the top but England are too powerful so I can see them being defeated during a KO stage but not before the two SA stalwarts exorcise all the choke demon

An end to proceedings here, Moeen Ali basically CRUSHED SA all on his own with bat and ball; nothing else to write about lads, business as usual :broad

Amla is the second greatest ODI opener of all-time. De Kock has some ways to go. Amla and AB have played crucial knocks in several chases, at least more than Faf and de Kock have.

Nah, Rashid is a club bowler and nothing more.

Woakes and Moeen proving that Birmingham is the best proving ground for cricketers in the land. Won't be long before shaz619 and I pick up a few international caps if the ECB abolishes the quotas for northerners and Londoners and finally starts selecting the team based on merit.

as if Pakistan have had just as many 300+ scores as India since the last World Cup :))

De Villiers failing in a pressure chase. Better than Viv Richards my foot.

I am not coming to defend him every time but this wasn't a failure under pressure chase. Remember he didn't got support and with 6 gone and 120 more needed of some 70 odd balls , a batsmen has to attack and score runs and take risk and you can get out that way. Not his fault really. He cant play a Dhoni type inning there and let the reqd rate creep 11-12 only to get out at 60-70.

You could have blamed him if reqd rate wasn't high or if support cast would have been there.

I did not know SA and England were playing a World Cup final today.

Lol, Devilliers can't fail even in a single ODI anymore!

Exactly and he got a worthy 45@118. In the last ENG vs SA ODI series he won the deciding match of the series for SA (Link). That doesn't count though because they said so.

They're just here to annoy his fans at this stage.

if he had I can bet you would have disregarded it since its a bilateral

Anyway this England team is unreal. This was a bit of a stop start performance by them.

Not blaming AB in particular but this SA batting lineup looks weak. Duminy and Miller at 5 and 6 and then pretty much the tail.

If what happened to Imran Tahir is anything to go by, spinners will get destroyed in this CT especially leg spinners who flight the ball a bit. Abbas instead of Shadab would definitely be the way to go.

Lack of quality finisher basically. Miller can smash balls and hit quickfire knocks atleast. Duminy cant do anything. Neither of two are clutch finishers though.

Their best chasers IMO are Faf and Qdk who bat up the order and cant finish off the game.

South Africa lost the game when they won the toss and put England in. Who even puts England to bat first in their home ground? Defensive move.

'Don't know what will be a good total or how much is enough' didn't work for them. Chasing a big score isn't easy.
