What's new

England [369, 226/2d] defeat Windies [197, 129] by 269 runs to win 3rd Test, win series 2-1

West Indies - 26/1 after 10 overs.

Campbell is playing positively. Hope is struggling.

Atherton hyping his test batting average by claiming "basically you can add 6-7 average to a batter spending majority of time playing in England".

4 down now. Vintage Anderson, turning the batters square.

This is not looking good for the West Indies.

As expected after the toss this is going to be an one sided game.

Great difference between the WI side of the first test and this one.

Two inexplicable toss decisions and poor team selection has cost WI here.

How it’s possible!!! This guy Jimmy Anderson dropped for ineffectiveness (without saliva) suddenly looks so menacing (even without saliva)!!!!!

He wasn't dropped, he was rested given the incredibly tight schedule.

Really!!! I didn’t know that. I thought that guy took almost 600 Test wickets only for saliva on Dukes ball ..... and got dropped after 3/60.

They're playing 6 tests this summer in less days than they played the Ashes series alone last summer, no one was going to play every match this summer.

Haha. That poster has some amazing theories. One day, he'll post something very insightful, and the next day he'll say some bizzare stuff..

These two need to stick around and with Cornwall yet to come, could expect some big hits from him as well, they need to somehow bat half day more.

Forecast isn't great for last 2 days so there's great chance for Windies to force a draw if they bat decently tomorrow

As the match progresses, it only proves that Holder made a blunder by opting to field after winning the toss. He has batting till 9, three fast bowlers and two spinners, perfect team to win toss and bat first.

Still 33 required and four wickets in hand - with a 47 overs old ball, I think it’ll be a tug of war for follow-on, though not necessarily Poms will enforce that. My hunch is tomorrow morning, Jimmy will run through WIN tail - another 5for May be. The ball that got Hope actually tells how good a batsman Hope is - you have to be very, very good to touch it!!!!

West Indies almost out of it really.

They look a very tired side to me.

Holder is a fantastic player and a very good leader of men but he is poor with his tactics. This type of captains do very well with a settled, strong team with every individual knows his role. Captain is more of a house keeper who commands respect and obviously delivers individually. The best example of this type - Steve Waugh. Lloyd was like that also; Imran to a certain extent similar, but he was a great motivator as well, hence he could extract the best out of talented young players. The last example of this type was Misbah, but he wasn’t individually the player like the other three.

its make or break for jason holder right here t b h. needs to score big and i hope he does tbh. for the greater good of the game

Bad light stops play , WI closing on avoiding follow on.

137 . 6

Holder fighting with 24 not out.

England have up the anti in this test and Windies are struggling to keep up, the main difference been the bench strength England have compared to Windies, as a result one side is looking to go up the gears whilst other one has blown a gascket.

Everyone talks about Holders performances but he is hardly criticised for his awful tactics which have cost West Indies regularly.

His tactics were poor in the World Cup as well. He had only 1 plan - short ball tactic and except Pakistan it didn't work against any other team.

Windies lack in terms of bench strength. Their XI is good but if their main players get injured, they struggle. Darren Bravo needs to be brought back, think he was injured. But he is arguably their best bat.

Braithwaite
Campbell
D Bravo
S Brooks
R Chase
J Blackwood
S Hope(wkt)(or any better keeper in the setup)
J Holder(c)
A Joseph
S Gabriel
K Roach

That is a decent team and should win at home vs a few other teams.

Stuart Broad and James Anderson once again showed their enduring class as England took a huge step towards winning the series on day two of the third Test against West Indies.

The veteran pace bowlers, who have each been left out for one match in the series, took two wickets apiece, while Broad weighed in with valuable runs.

With Jofra Archer also bowling at high pace, West Indies were 137-6, 232 behind, when bad light ended play half an hour early.

The tourists had earlier made an explosive start, taking four wickets for 18 runs, including Ollie Pope without adding to his overnight 91 and Jos Buttler for 67.

But Broad reversed the momentum by crashing a 33-ball half-century - only Ian Botham has made a quicker fifty for England in Tests.

His 62 from 45 balls is his highest score for seven years and lifted England to 369 all out.

Their progress on a day when expected rain never arrived could negate further bad weather that is forecast during the rest of the match.

They are primed to regain the Wisden Trophy, protect a six-year unbeaten home record and deny West Indies a first win in England since 1988.

James Anderson is now England's leading Test wicket-taker against West Indies with 87 wickets at an average of 22
Old firm swing it England's way

So much attention in this series has focused on the home pace attack, with Anderson and Broad - England's all-time leading wicket-takers - stating their case for inclusion after being left out.

In being paired together in a Test for the first time since January, they backed up their words with a characteristic display in conditions ideally suited to their strengths.

Their efforts gave England firm control of a series decider on a day that began with the threat of West Indies fighting their way back into the contest.

With England resuming on 258-4, the rejuvenated West Indies were inspired in the first hour, particularly the pace pair of Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach.

However, the tourists were flattened first by Broad's onslaught with the bat then by the relentless threat of England's four pace bowlers - off-spinner Dom Bess did not bowl a single over.

By the end, a series that has been so keenly contested looked to have only one winner, with England's biggest opponent arguably now the Manchester weather.

England were in danger of wasting their good first day when Broad came to the crease.

Pope was bowled playing across the line to Gabriel and Buttler was well caught at second slip by Jason Holder, while Chris Woakes chopped on off Roach and Archer was also held by Holder - all in the space of 22 deliveries.

Broad countered with swipes, carves, flowing drives and one almighty heave over the leg side for six.

When his ninth-wicket stand with Bess passed 50, Bess had contributed only eight. Broad's 62 is the highest score by an England number 10 since 1966.

The fun was eventually ended when Broad swept the off-spin of Roston Chase into the hands of deep mid-wicket.

And though, overall, England lost their last six wickets for 107 runs, Broad ensured they maintained a position of strength.

West Indies have been more than a match for England throughout this series, but this poor day looks set to continue their wait for success in this country.

Deflated by Broad's assault, during which their tactics were passive, their top order then collectively buckled for the first time in the series.

Broad had Kraigg Brathwaite edge to first slip with his fourth delivery and the Windies would have been in further trouble had second slip Ben Stokes not spilled John Campbell off Anderson.

Although Campbell played some handsome drives in his 32, he was undone by the extra pace of Archer, who got one to spit and take a leading edge.

Anderson and Broad, keeping a full length, were superb either side of tea. Anderson, bowling from the end that bears his name, took Shai Hope's outside edge and Shamarh Brooks' inside edge.

Broad nipped one back to Chase to have him lbw and Woakes destroyed the stumps of Jermaine Blackwood, leaving Holder and Shane Dowrich to cling on before the light drew in.

England's Stuart Broad on Sky Sports: "West Indies bowled beautifully this morning. We were hoping to get 400 but we're happy with passing 350.

"Batting was good fun. My decision was to try to take the bowlers off the top of off stump because it was nipping off a length.

"We're happy with that first-innings score and the way the whole unit bowled this afternoon was fantastic. We controlled the run-rate beautifully and the wickets came our way."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan: "Stuart Broad has been great. There's something in his mechanism that when he gets a bit of stick and criticism, he comes back and proves people wrong.

"It takes a mental kind of toughness in your own game and confidence to then deliver and it's the second week now where he's delivered."

West Indies bowler Kemar Roach, who reached 200 Test wickets on the second day, talking to TMS: "I guess I had that landmark on my mind a little bit too much, I had a few restless nights. It's good to get past that barrier now and see how many more I can get. 300 would be great.

"We started well but Stuart Broad came in and played his shots and things went his way. Things drifted a bit and we're in a difficult position now but the guys will fight it out."

Tomorrow looks set to be lost to rain, but today and Tuesday are likely to be full days of play — so whether the follow-on is enforced or not (West Indies are looking mentally tired so I think it should be), I’d say that England will have just enough time to win the series from here.

Good pickup on that ball m8....yeah..grumpy jim has heapsof wickets in thatmanner, but not everytime bat was involved....just amazed at the way him and broad prat getting better with age...

Why is Jonny Bairstow not being picked? Surely a better bat than Burns, Sibley or even Butler.

Windies look like they are done. They've been in England a while and it seems mentally they're sat on the beaches of the Caribbean.

Bairstow is not cut out for Tests, which has been proven over a long period. Over 60% of his Test dismissals are bowled. He doesn’t have the technique to survive against quality bowlers.

Bravo didn't want to tour because of coronavirus concerns. WI have depth in seam bowling, but the batting reserves are dire.

The vast majority of batsmen in FC cricket average in the 20s and 30s. Even the guys considered to be WI's best batsmen like Brathwaite and Hope went into this series with long dips in form.

WI in Test cricket should aim to dominate at home on seaming, bouncy wickets that suit their bowlers, and try to be as competitive overseas as possible.

They had Australia 4/5 down and still lost the game. Also lost comfortably to Bangladesh when they had over 300 to defend.

No wonder he was replaced as LO captain. He is poor tactically.

Darren Bravo is not in the squad due to covid19 fears.

Bowling figures clearly show that Anderson and Broad are still England’s best bowlers. They have figures of 55/7 in 29 overs between them. On the other hand Archer and Woakes have 35 overs with 129/2 between them (Archer with 72 runs in 17 overs). Eng will have to prepare replacements for Anderson and Broad, it surely wont be easy.

In hindsight, this would have been a whitewash if Broad would have been picked over Wood in the first Test.

Does anybody see Pakistan scoring more than 225 in any innings?

Arguably the best English attack of all time. They don't even need Bess. Should just play another Sam Curran.

Pakistan would need a miracle to avoid a whitewash against this lineup.

They don’t even need a spinner. Just use Curran and Stokes in quick bursts to keep the four strike bowlers fresh.

Batting might be a tad light, but they don’t need to score 500+ with this attack especially against Pakistan.

I am a bit more philosophical on the Broad issue personally. He has had a great 2 Tests, but the question is, would he have been this relentlessly motivated and so noticeably fired up if he hadn’t been dropped in the first match? Things happen for a reason, and putting Stuart’s career under threat has given him a huge scare that has clearly sprung him into his best form with ball & bat.

Chris Silverwood is proving to be a better Test coach than Trevor Bayliss. Despite the Broad selection furore in the 1st Test, Silverwood has balanced the batting lineup.

Three grinders in Burns, Sibley and Crawley (when he returns) to take the shine off the new ball. Then the free flowing strokemakers Root, Stokes and Pope in the middle-order.

Just need to sort the keeping position out as Buttler isn't a long-term option with his defensive technique.

Sibley may struggle in the subcontinent against quality spinners, does seem to get bogged down.

They should bat aggressively now. Or should have atleast upped the tempo a while back only.

If rain happens tomorrow full day, WI may get a hope of drawing the test match.

Tlo early to judge based on the results he has produced. England 's results have not been so different from the bayliss era.

Poms need to look to score at faster rate , they are in very safe position right now. They can take a few chances here

England are leading by 286 runs.

I think England should declare with a target of around 420 runs.

Averaged 25 in tests for the last two years. So does Buttler but he seems to be in favour while Bairstow is not. Burns and Sibley are averaging in the forties now.

Hundred opening partnership. Woo. Not seen one of them for a while from England....

Sibley and Burns seem settled now. I think England may have finally found a steady opening pair.

Left and right combination too.

Crack on until half an hour before the close, then declare. WI won't get 350. Chasing doen 300 is hard enough for anybody.

I just checked ICC ranking predictor. England do not lose any point in ranking if they win this game.

140/1. Lead is now worth 312 runs.

I think they should accelerate now. Send in Butler and Stokes next. Get 50 more runs in 5-6 overs. Declare after that.

Lead is now worth 318 runs.
