What's new

England [369, 226/2d] defeat Windies [197, 129] by 269 runs to win 3rd Test, win series 2-1

10 from the over. Cornwall is being expensive. His bowling average is taking a hit too (33.61 currently).

England are accelerating now. Even Burns is hitting.

This partnership is now worth 44 runs from 8 overs. Lead is now worth 330 runs.

158/1.

I was checking FC stats of Burns. He has played 134 FC games with just 11 sixes. He hasn't hit a single six in international cricket.

I think it will not be bad if Burns gets out now. Stokes and Butler can accelerate faster.

Lead is worth 361 runs.

It seems like West Indies are trying to delay things (changing field settings too frequently, taking time etc.).

191/1. Lead is now worth 363 runs. Burns is on 84*.

Chris Silverwood is proving to be a better Test coach than Trevor Bayliss. Despite the Broad selection furore in the 1st Test, Silverwood has balanced the batting lineup.

Three grinders in Burns, Sibley and Crawley (when he returns) to take the shine off the new ball. Then the free flowing strokemakers Root, Stokes and Pope in the middle-order.

Just need to sort the keeping position out as Buttler isn't a long-term option with his defensive technique.

I think they're going to be a little more patient with Buttler. And Buttler seems to be working on some changes as well. Personally, I agree with this, as he's a devastating player if he finds his feet in tests.

Broad literally doing what he is best known for. When he gets going, he can simply run through the lineup all over.

World class from broad, surely England can't drop him again, also fantastic for the RED HALF OF MANCHESTER, united qualify for champions league.

England are hard to beat at home if you haven't practised in county cricket.

pakistan can surprise them in my opinion.

Australia came close to beating them. You need good swing bowlers and batsmen with solid defense. County practice is a must.

Very good day for England. Aside from the first hour they bossed the day completely. Those two Windies wickets right at the end of the day seem to have sealed the game from a psychological point of view.

Day of rest tomorrow whilst it rains, and then take 8 wickets on the last day. Series won. Wisden Trophy regained.

Pakistan are England's bogey side normally , can't see any thing other than a England win in that series as England have had a good competitive series against Windies whilst pakistan have not played any competitive cricket for a long while.

Stuart Broad's six wickets left England on the verge of a series victory over West Indies on the third day of the deciding Test at Emirates Old Trafford.

Broad took all of the West Indies wickets to fall across two innings, starting with four in four overs for 6-31 in the first, leaving the tourists 197 all out, 172 behind.

Late in the day, with the tourists set a nominal 399 to win, the brilliant Broad struck twice more, leaving West Indies 10-2.

He is poised on 499 Test wickets, one away from becoming only the fourth pace bowler to reach 500.

England's lead had been extended first by an opening stand of 114 between Rory Burns and Dom Sibley, who made 56.

The arrival of captain Joe Root was the signal to accelerate, with the hosts mindful of a forecast predicting rain will heavily disrupt Monday's play.

The second-wicket pair added 112 at 6.5 an over, Root skating to 68 not out from 56 balls.

When Burns top-edged a sweep to fall 10 runs short of his third Test century, it was the signal for England to declare on 226-2.

England in charge at last
This is a been a competitive series, both teams making light of the bio-secure, behind-closed-doors environment to serve up a compelling contest.

Only now, midway through the final Test, have England asserted their dominance, grinding down the visitors in the Sunday sunshine.

For as good as England have been, there is the feeling West Indies ran out of steam at the end of a challenging trip that has seen them spend all but one week living, training and playing at Emirates Old Trafford.

Little went right for them after the first spell of Broad-induced carnage. Captain Jason Holder took a painful blow to the thumb while fielding at second slip, while weary opening bowler Shannon Gabriel could only manage five overs.

In that time, he hit struggling wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich in the face, forcing him from the field. Shai Hope took the gloves, then reserve Joshua da Silva was summoned from the nets, meaning the Windies had three keepers in the space of 45 minutes.

When they failed to review Rahkeem Cornwall's lbw shout against Burns that would have seen him fall for 75, it summed up their miserable day.

Broad does it again
Since Broad publicly voiced his displeasure at being left out of the first Test, has taken 14 wickets at 10.50 and averaged 73 with the bat.

His morning burst was his third destructive spell in as many innings, begging the question as to why England ignored him for almost the entire first hour of the day.

By that point, Holder and Dowrich had moved West Indies from their overnight 137-6 past the follow-on mark of 170 with relative ease, albeit if Holder was held by a flying Ollie Pope off a marginal Chris Woakes no-ball.

Broad's intervention changed all that. With a full length and some nip in to the right-handers, he returned a spell of 4-14 for his best figures in a home Test since his famous 8-15 against Australia five years ago.

Holder was stuck on the crease to be lbw, Cornwall played across the line to fall in the same manner, Kemar Roach edged his third ball to slip and Dowrich miscued a pull to mid-on.

In the evening sunshine, there was still time for John Campbell to be caught at first slip and nightwatchman Roach to nick off again, leaving Broad with figures in the day of 6-22.

England's comfortable position and the patient styles of Burns and Sibley led to a meandering passage of play in the afternoon.

There was the curiosity of West Indies' wicketkeeping situation, with Da Silva losing his footing when given the chance to stump Burns off Roston Chase when the left-hander had 12.

Sibley accumulated through the leg side and Burns nudged and pushed square of the wicket for England's first century opening stand in a home Test since 2016.

After Sibley was lbw to Holder, Root arrived and immediately signalled England's intention to push for the declaration.

He danced to play down the ground and through mid-wicket, with Burns sliding into the slipstream with sweeps and reverse-sweeps.

Root reached his half-century from 49 balls and was perhaps only delaying the declaration for a Burns hundred that ultimately never came.

Broad heading for a tenfer and series victory - if the rain holds off!

Stuart Broad on to 499 Test wickets as England move closer to regaining Wisden Trophy despite rain threat
England declare on 226-2 to set West Indies 398 to win - tourists close on 10-2 ahead of what looks set to be rain-affected day four

Stuart Broad moved on to 499 Test wickets either side of England's top three firing with the bat as Joe Root's side kicked on in their bid to beat West Indies and the weather and regain the Wisden Trophy.

Broad nicked off John Campbell (0) and nightwatchman Kemar Roach (4) on Sunday evening to move one scalp shy of becoming the second Englishman after James Anderson to 500 in Tests as Windies closed on 10-2, after Joe Root had declared on 226-2 with his side leading by 398, mindful that the forecast for day four in Manchester is grim.

Broad (6-31) had bagged 4-14 during the opening session on day three at Emirates Old Trafford, having only been called into the attack once Windies had avoided the follow-on, with his 18th five-wicket haul seeing the tourists slip to 197 all out and earning England a first-innings lead of 172.

Rory Burns (90) and Dom Sibley (56) then shared the team's first century opening partnership at home since Sir Alastair Cook and Alex Hales against Pakistan in 2016, while Root's sprightly 68no from 56 balls came amid a brisk 112-run stand with Burns, whose dismissal slog-sweeping Roston Chase triggered the declaration with 30 minutes remaining.

England now have two days at best and one at worst - Tuesday's outlook is much brighter - to take the eight wickets they need to seal a come-from-behind series win, with Broad one away from a magical landmark in a Test that he has been sensational in so far.

Joe Root scored an excellent 68 in England's second innings

Being able to enforce the follow-on would have boosted England's victory hopes but that option was removed as Jason Holder (46) and Shane Dowrich (37) lifted West Indies from their overnight 137-6 and past the score of 170 that ended any chance of the visitors being reinserted by Root.

England would have had Holder out to a superb leaping catch from Ollie Pope at midwicket had Chris Woakes - who shared bowling duty with Jofra Archer over the first 40 minutes - not bowled just the second no-ball of his Test career when Windies were on 166-6.

Holder compounded Woakes' woe by pulling away the boundary that ensured Windies avoided the follow-on - but he was then pinned lbw by a Broad nip-backer shortly before the drinks break, as his seventh-wicket partnership with fellow Bajan Dowrich ended on 68.

Broad then accounted for Rahkeem Cornwall (10) and Roach (0) in the same over and wrapped up the innings when Dowrich hacked to mid-on as he claimed six wickets or more in a Test innings for the 12th time and made England's decision to overlook him for first Test, which they lost by four wickets, look increasingly folly.

Sibley and Burns came through 20 minutes before lunch, during which Sibley moved off a potential pair, and all the way though until 40 minutes after as they accumulated runs steadily, with the only casualties being West Indian.

Holder temporarily left the field and then returned with a bandaged left thumb after being hit by a ball in the slip cordon, while Dowrich saw his day ended by a blow to the face as he tried to collect a ferocious delivery from Shannon Gabriel - substitute Joshua Da Silva keeping wicket in his stead after Shai Hope had briefly filled in.

Da Silva came close to stumping Burns on 12 after spinner Roston Chase had lured the left-hander out of his crease but the replacement wicketkeeper had to move wide to his left to collect the ball and could not quite dislodge the bails as he lunged back to his right.

Burns, as he has done throughout the series, looked nervy at times against Chase but became more confident as his innings progressed as he notched his second half-century of the match and eighth overall from 111 deliveries, shortly after Sibley had completed his second from 121.

Holder broke the partnership on 114 when he dismissed Sibley lbw but the opener's dismissal led to Burns and Root increasing the run rate, while Holder was soon off the field again for a short period after appearing to tweak his ankle for the second time on tour.

Stand-in captain Brathwaite made an error while Holder was out of commission - failing to go for an lbw review that would have seen Burns out to off-spinner Cornwall for 75 - while England skipper Root passed fifty for the 49th time in Test cricket from 49 balls when he belted Roach back down the ground.

West Indies coach Phil Simmons challenged his batsmen to get among the runs as it needs to chase down an imposing 399-run target to win the deciding Test against England at Old Trafford.

The tourists have their backs to the wall after slumping to 10-2 at the close on Sunday, with the series level at 1-1.

"We haven't had any centuries in this series so Im always going to be putting pressure on them to go out there and get it," Simmons told a news conference.

"The wicket is still a good wicket to bat on, so they have to set themselves a target of getting a big score on this wicket. Weve got to show that determination to get those big scores."

"Tomorrow is only the fourth day so we've got a lot of time to bat," added Simmons, ignoring the weather forecast that suggests much of Mondays play will be rained out.

That was the catalyst for England accelerating the run rate and declaring its second innings on 226-2 on Sunday before putting the West Indies into bat for the last six overs of the day.

Stuart Broad, who took 6-31 in the first innings, snagged both opener John Campbell and nightwatchman Kemar Roach before the close, handing the home side a massive advantage.

Kraigg Brathwaite, who went cheaply in the first innings, and Shai Hope, under pressure to keep his place a series of low scores, will resume with the West Indies needing a serious rear guard action to stand any chance of success.

Simmons admitted the challenge of facing veterans Broad and James Anderson in English conditions was a formidable prospect for his batsmen.

"Those bowlers -- one nearing 600 and the other 500 test wickets -- make things hard. Those guys keep coming at you, its relentless. But on these wickets here, we have shown we can score," he said.

Absolutely bucketing it down across England today. There will be zero play. But if they get in at least 70 overs tomorrow, that should be enough for England to win.

Met Office forecasts some rain tomorrow at Old Trafford too. West Indies might have a chance of sneaking with a draw and the Wisden Trophy.

The 1st test match between England and West Indies created a new record of most watched non Indian test match. It was recorded 64.5 million viewing minutes on Sony Six/HD channels, which is 3% more than the last Ashes test match of 2019.

it is impressive how englsnd smashed w.indies in the third test honestly. As long as stokes is alive, the match is never won in England.

Well being a local around here there's a window of opportunity to get some play in today , later this afternoon we could get a session in which I think will be more than enough.

Windies deserves a drawn series for mine have played some good cricket for the most part.

West Indies deserved to win the first Test, but they don’t deserve to tie the series. England have dominated the other two matches. The fair series result is 2-1 to England.

They will have 90 overs tomorrow to get the remaining wickets should be good last day

Who knows we might lose some overs to rain again tomorrow's and WI might have a small chance of escaping with a draw.

Heavy rain prevented any play on day four of the third Test between England and West Indies at Emirates Old Trafford.

It means England will need to take eight wickets on the game's final day to win the Test and series.

West Indies are 10-2, chasing an unlikely 399 to win a series in England for the first time since 1988.

The series is currently locked at 1-1, with England looking to protect a six-year unbeaten home record.

When play does resume on Tuesday, England bowler Stuart Broad will be one wicket away from becoming only the second Englishman to reach 500 Test wickets.

England need to remain in the field and they will win
West indies need to hope it rains for atleast 1 hour ti have any chance

Even if it rains half a day I dont think the WI will survive. They looked tired and defeated from the word go in this test match. Also with Broad in this form even the Pakistani openers won't be feeling comfortable.

A weak top order with Hope and Campbell ruined their chances of winning the series. Their lower order is decent but can't survive Broad, Anderson.

If West Indies can see out the morning session, there is a good chance for a draw.

England are still favorites though.

Windies looked mentally shot throughout this test but rain might have just given them an outside chance of saving the test match and winning the series. A great knock from their captain or any other player might just save them the match and series.

I really wish Windies put up a fight.

Looking forward to a thrilling last day!

Funnily enough, kraigg Braithwaite was the 500th wicket of Anderson as well.

Well done Draco. Now get ten in the match.

Oven that Anderson cannot have much gas left, I think the Notts man will pass his tally.

One of the few things Peter Moore did right as England coach was put together the Anderson and Broad combination in 2008.

Incredible to think they're still going 12 years later. Well done to Broad on reaching the 500 club.

79/5 West Indies. Rain can only do so much, I guess West Indies haven't been in this series after the onslaught by Stokes in the 2nd innings of second test. The momenntum has been with England all the way.

IIRC when Anderson returned to test cricket in 2008 he got the new ball with Sidebottom, Flintoff and others.

Broad didn’t develop as an opening bowler until 2011 when he stopped trying to be an ‘enforcer’ and started doing his McGrath impression, aiming at top of off.

Rain is putting in more effort than the Windies players to save the test.

A swing bowler does'nt get many wickets in 4th innings. Its a spinner's job. Anderson Anderson won a test in 2018 vs india and 2013 vs australia. 4/23 and 5/73 respectively

Good Google job my friend.

My 'broad' point is that I see Anderson not being able to enforce himself on Day 5 the way Broad and Stokes have done in the recent past. Doesn't have to take 5 wickets - but must make crucial breakthroughs and come up with momentum changing spells. He bowls economically, beats the edges sometimes but take wickets in clumps, that job he is not doing. We saw it in this series clearly.

Well, that means he is getting the bulk of his wickets up front, where it counts more, shaping the game.

Woakes is so underrated, all eyes were set on Broad and Anderson this morning but Woakes has kept picking wickets.

The last two teams to beat England at Old Trafford are Australia in 2019 and South Africa in 2008.

It's possibly the most Australian like surface from all English venues with the pace and bounce which may explain their success - but there's also lateral movement on offer hence why you need a world class batsman like Steve Smith to counter the conditions.

Pakistan were hammered in 2006 and 2016 at this ground so it'll take a massive effort next week to avoid another defeat.

Did England purposely loose the 1st test to keep the sponsors/viewers interested?

There is a huge gap between the teams!

He’s busting them up. Going to nick Broady’s tenfer....

Pathetic toss decisions by Holder cost them again. The only chance they had of competing was batting first and they mucked it.

ENG 369 & 226/2 dWI 197 & 129

England won by 269 runs

Woakes should always play in England.

1st test vs Pakistan, bowling attack:-

7. Curran
8. Woakes
9. Archer
10. Broad
11. Anderson

Ten for Broad for the first time since 2013, and England regain the Wisden Trophy.

Pope
Foakes
Woakes or Curran
Broad
Wood

Well done England.

Really poor show from West Indies in this match, and particularly today. Surely none of their supporters can say after this that they still deserved to tie the series.

Most wickets for ENG in 4th innings:
79 - Stuart Broad*
78 - James Anderson
59 - Moeen Ali
57 - Bob Willis
45 - Derek Underwood

I think West Indies have given England a good practice before Pakistan series. England were looking rusty during first Test but now they are looking pretty lethal.
