West Indies coach identifies key area to help his team bounce back against England

The West Indies will be looking to level their three-match series against England with an improved performance at Trent Bridge.

West Indies coach Andre Coley has identified one area his team must perform better in if they are to mix it with England in the second Test of their ongoing ICC World Test Championship series in Nottingham.

The Caribbean side were outclassed in the opening Test of the series as they fell to a disappointing loss by an innings and 114 runs at Lord's in what was a fitting farewell to champion England seamer James Anderson.

The three-match series now moves to Trent Bridge for the second contest and Coley knows his team must produce a better performance in all aspects of their game, starting with their efforts in the field.

"I would love to see us with a lot more intensity that we're known to show in the field," Coley said ahead of the second Test against England that commences on Thursday.

"I thought in this (Lord's) Test match, we weren't at our best in terms of imposing ourselves on the England batters. That is definitely something that we need to be better at for the next Test."

The West Indies currently sit in sixth place in the World Test Championship standings and badly need a pair of positive results from their final two matches in England if they are to keep in touch with the competition pacesetters.

Coley said spirits remain high within the playing group despite the loss in London and he expects his side to be able to cope better with English conditions during the next two matches.

"Having been here now about two weeks, having a bit of time to acclimatise to conditions and actually getting time in the middle… yes, the result was not what we would've wanted and planned for, but I do believe that there's a lot to be had in terms of learning and takeaways," he said.

"We admit that the side we have, it is young and emerging… but we are still very positive about how we are approaching the second Test. Everybody's in good spirits. We've been catching up with the players one-on-one and this will really be the first time that we'll be settled as a squad.

"There's been quite a bit of activity on and off the field leading up to the first Test and it's been a lot, I can imagine, for some of our players to have been able to absorb. So it's a massive learning for everyone, players and staff, and we are still very positive as we head to Nottingham."

The West Indies showed some resilience earlier this year when they defeated reigning World Test Championship winners Australia at the Gabba after a similar big loss in the opening Test of that series and Coley believes his side can learn from that experience and produce a similar result in Nottingham.

"They would've taken a lot of positives from that (Gabba Test)," Coley said

"In terms of how we were able to bounce back, the process that we went through to be able to do that I believe is a lot more powerful (than winning).

"It reinforces the fact that in a series you could actually not start well but then compose yourself and come back in the series and be quite competitive, potentially set it up for a game-three decider. So there are real positives to be taken away, not only from the first Test here, but what we would've (faced in the) last six months."

Exciting time to be a fast bowler - Stokes

Captain Ben Stokes says it is an “exciting time to be a fast bowler in England” as his side prepare to play their first Test since the retirement of James Anderson.

Thursday’s second Test against West Indies at Trent Bridge will be the first time since 2012 that England have played a home game without at least Anderson or Stuart Broad.

“Without sounding too over the top, there was always going to be a time where that was going to hit English cricket,” Stokes told BBC Sport.

“There are going to be opportunities for guys throughout the rest of the summer and over the next 18 months to two years.”

Stokes said Chris Woakes, playing his 50th Test, will “lead the attack” and share the new ball with Gus Atkinson.

Surrey’s Atkinson took 12 wickets on debut in the huge victory in the first Test at Lord’s.

Mark Wood is recalled to take the place of Anderson and, alongside Atkinson, forms probably the paciest England paring since Wood and Olly Stone played against New Zealand in 2021.

Anderson and Broad, England’s two all-time leading wicket-takers, have retired in back-to-back home Tests, albeit almost a year apart. In Anderson’s case, the 41-year-old was moved on by England as part of a raft of changes with the 2025-26 Ashes tour of Australia in mind.

Matthew Potts, who has six Test caps, and the uncapped Dillon Pennington are the unused fast bowlers in England’s squad at Trent Bridge. Managing director Rob Key has also mentioned Essex’s Sam Cook as another who could play this summer.

“It’s a really exciting time to be a fast bowler in England,” said all-rounder Stokes. “It is very exciting, the prospect of seeing Gus Atkinson bowl at one end and Mark Wood at the other.

“There will be opportunities for Dillon no doubt in the summer, but at this moment in time Woody makes it into our strongest XI.”

Stokes also said there is a “plan in place” if Ben Duckett’s partner Paige goes into labour, with the couple expecting their first child.

Nottinghamshire opener Duckett is due to play a Test on his home ground for the first time and is only likely to miss out completely should the birth begin before the match starts on Thursday morning. Dan Lawrence is on standby to come in.

Should Duckett start the match, there is the potential for him to leave for part of it, similar to the situation faced by Joe Denly in the final Ashes Test at The Oval in 2019.

Victory at Trent Bridge would give England an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and their first series win since the tour of Pakistan in 2022.

West Indies, soundly beaten by an innings and 114 runs at Lord’s, have named an unchanged side. Fast bowler Shamar Joseph has been passed fit after struggling with a left leg injury at Lord’s.

“The guys are very eager and ready to go,” said captain Kraigg Brathwaite. “We have to bat better - we have to find a way. We have to put runs on the board. It’s simple.

“We believe 100% in the guys that played the first Test. Shamar has been good to go for a couple of days.”

England could be forced to make a change to their Trent Bridge XI with Ben Duckett's family expecting their first child

Dan Lawrence has been included as the standby

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite told a pre-match press conference at Trent Bridge:

"It's a challenge. I mean, we're longing for more Test cricket."

"I think the more you play it, the faster you will learn. If it's drawn over a long period of time, playing two Tests here, two Tests there, you will take longer to learn. We need more Tests."

"It's pretty simple what we've got to do -- we've got to bat a lot better."

"We've got to find a way. We've just got to put runs on the board. I know what I have to do and it's obviously important to lead this team and lead the batting."

"We've just got to keep learning."

West Indies need Pooran, Hetmyer, Hope in the test team.
Won't make any difference.

Nicholas Pooran has played 5 FC matches averaging 30.

Hetmyer averages 27 after playing a dozen Tests.

Shai Hope averages 25 after playing 38 Tests.

These are the guys who would make a difference ?

After WI win in Australia, expected great fight from Windies but they have been utterly disappointing so far.

West Indies should be playing better cricket than they did in the first game. They are no winning anything until they perform like they did against Australia.

Not much cricket happening so waiting for this test match but this is going to be another one sided match.

Motie unfit , replaced by Sinclair - bowling weakened significantly .
yep. Motie did fine in the first game. unfortunate that he got injured.

Wood also comes in for Anderson as we al know.

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:

England
(Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes(c), Jamie Smith(w), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood, Shoaib Bashir

West Indies (Playing XI): Kraigg Brathwaite(c), Mikyle Louis, Kirk McKenzie, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Jason Holder, Joshua Da Silva(w), Alzarri Joseph, Kevin Sinclair, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales

WI win toss & bowl on a clear sunny day  . Bazball clearly discarded going by Lords Test scoring - lesson learnt from mauling by India .

Blazing sunshine yet Brathwaite chooses to bowl first.

This is where England easily chased 299 against NZ.

Toss doesn't matter.

Windies struggle to make 250 even. You need a lot more on this pitch

Freakin England man. Yeah I know its a flat pitch, but to come out with this kind of intent in a test match is still crazy

This is not very attacking batting . Duckett is just placing the ball and outfield doing the rest.

England bring up their 50 in just 4.2 overs. Wow. It's the fastest team 50 in Test cricket!

They are scoring very fast but I don't like this at all .

I want a test match pitch where 250-270 is avarage score .

This is totally patta wickets .

I really hate this . England is producing patta wickets so their tullyabaaz can score .

Low scoring thriller is what i like the most instead these run feast .

Yep. Flat wickets is not good for test cricket. should be a difficult one to bat on. It is way too easy for batters.

Way too easy for this guy atm.

Sky Sports' Nasser Hussain:

"Wherever West Indies put the fielders, Duckett is finding the gaps."

duckett was playing too many shots and ended up throwing his wicket away.

Shamar joseph's tight line was rewarded.

This looks like a good cluster from Young Shamar Joseph. The 4th-5th stump line and length were also good TBH. Worked hard for his wicket.

DROP! Pope gets a life. He cuts the ball away to backward point, the ball flashing off the blade straight to Athanaze. However, he cannot hang as Pope survives.

Pope gets a single and gets off strike as Root sees out the final delivery.

What a bonus that could've been for the tourists. However, a touch session for them, despite the wickets of Crawley and Duckett, comes to a close.

England head into lunch 134-2

Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop, speaking on Sky Sports Cricket:

"They need to be better - not good enough.

"You have to give Ben Duckett a lot of credit because he capitalised on anything which was short of the mark to him and he played one or two not half-bad deliveries with Ollie Pope.

"But generally, if you're looking at 21 fours and a six in a single session, you haven't been consistent enough with those good-length deliveries tight enough to the off stump."

Sky Sports' Michael Atherton:

"Shamar Joseph's rhythm has been better.

"He looked to be struggling with his stride at Lord's, but the better rhythm here has brought better speeds."

Some of the West Indies bowling and catching has been absolutely shocking.

West Indies shouldn’t have picked Shamar Joseph after the alarm bells over his endurance in the 1st Test. Obviously isn’t fit.

England is best place to watch cricket On TV. Love watching cricket in England.

its usually crawley root brook who are england's most consistent run scorers
but the other inconsistent three, duckett, pope, stokes are the ones stepping up this time

West Indies fought hard but Englands intent alone is going to be too much for West Indies to overcome

There aren’t 9 wickets in this pitch on the first day, but with 410 runs scored at such a rapid rate and the West Indies batting lineup being so short on Test match experience, you’d think this total will be enough for England to dictate terms in the match for the next couple of days at least.

Cook as usual has batted on both sides , in 86th over says pitch not really as flat & EOD at 416/10 says ''
It does feel like England are a few short. You'd think 450 was about par. But when West Indies bowlers got it in the right area, there was the occasional play and miss and some good balls bowled.

We will know a lot more an hour into tomorrow about whether this is a par score or a long way above it.''

Ollie Pope’s sparkling century led England to 416 on a hectic first day of the second Test against West Indies at Trent Bridge.

Number-three Pope arrived with the hosts 0-1 and caressed 121, adding 105 for the second wicket with Ben Duckett, who scored rapidly in the first hour.

Opener Duckett may have to leave this match if his partner goes into labour and batted like a man in a hurry, hitting the first four legal deliveries he faced for four. He was threatening England’s fastest century in Test cricket before he was dismissed for 71 from 59 balls.

Pope took advantage of being dropped on 46 and 54 to reach three figures from 143 balls, before captain Ben Stokes made a welcome 69.

The skipper was one of a number of England batters who found a way to get out, particularly to off-spinner Kevin Sinclair and left-armer Kavem Hodge.

In a chaotic end to the day, England lost their last five wickets for 74 runs, West Indies took their tally of drops to four and Mark Wood survived a stumping chance off Hodge.

Wood and Chris Woakes took England past 400, before the latter and Shoaib Bashir fell in successive overs, Bashir to the final ball of the day.

England, 1-0 up and with the chance to win the series, are in a strong position, but one that could have been stronger.

Average first innings score at Trent Bridge since 2010 is 308.

There is also the question of whether West Indies could register a par score even if it was 450.

Windies did well to restrict England to 416. At one point, it seemed like England would reach 500.

It is way too easy atm for the English batters. Home conditions yes, but the pitch is too flat for red-ball cricket. Not sure why these kinds of pitches are seen more and more.

weather on day 3 seems to be improving & as of now , 300+ overs look pretty certain from here . Draw should safely be out of contention , only point o interest is can WI get 300 !

West Indies have to score minimum 300 in the first innings or else it will be another innings victory for the English.

Question: Yesterday riots happened in Leeds in England. Will West Indies call off their tour? Or will Sri Lanka call off their next month tour to England? If riots happen any country in the sub continent , every team will call for cancellation of the tour to that country citing player safety.

West Indies spinner reveals background of unique wicket celebration

West Indies spinner Kevin Sinclair has explained the background of his trademark wicket celebration as the Caribbean side fought back strongly late on the opening day of the second Test against England on Thursday.

Sinclair was among the West Indies' best bowlers on the first day of the crucial ICC World Test Championship contest in Nottingham, with the inexperienced off-spinner claiming two wickets - including the big scalp of England young gun Harry Brook - as the hosts amassed 416 after being sent into bat first.

It was Sinclair's dismissal of Brook that caught the eye most, with the Guyanese spinner dashing off to perform his now trademark celebration that consists of backflips and somersaults as the West Indies fought back hard to reduce England to 201/4 during the middle session.

It wasn't the first time Sinclair has produced the eye-catching celebration on the field, with the 24-year-old having performed the acrobatic feat during last year's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament in Zimbabwe and then again on Test debut against Australia at The Gabba earlier this year.

Sinclair was quizzed on the background of the unique celebration after the opening day's play and the right-armer revealed the act had been perfected from years of practice at home.

"That's my trademark celebration, from where I come from," Sinclair said.

"Whenever I get a wicket, I just do it for everyone from there.

"It all started at the tender age of eight, practicing it over and over in the back garden. I know what I'm doing, I've perfected it over the years."

Sinclair wasn't even meant to be in the West Indies’ XI for the second Test, with the spinner only earning a reprieve on the morning of the opening day when first-choice tweaker Gudakesh Motie was ruled out of the clash due to illness.

Sinclair's enthusiasm on the field helped inspire his fellow bowlers, with Alzarri Joseph (3/98), Jayden Seales (2/90) and Kavem Hodge (2/44) all picking up multiple wickets as England threw away a fast start to be dismissed late in the day.

Right-hander Ollie Pope was the mainstay of England's innings, with the top-order batter riding the luck provided by a bevy of dropped catches by the West Indies to notch his sixth Test century for his country.

Pope acknowledged the luck he received while batting, but said it was a welcome change from a recent stint at domestic level in England when everything seemed to go against him.

"I'm happy with the way I went about my stuff and obviously there was a nice couple of drops, which always helps," Pope said.

"No one means to drop them but cricket goes in swings and roundabouts. The luck wasn't with me in my County stint. I wouldn't say I had doubts but sometimes you think, 'Why's everyone else in the country scoring runs in County cricket but England's No.3 isn't going out and averaging 50 this summer?'

"That's just cricket for you, you want to go and score a hundred every day but sometimes it doesn't work that way."

Least amount of new ball swing in England in over a decade.

This version of the Dukes and some flat pitches have been great for Bazball

West Indies should look to grind out England. Opposite of Bazball.

Flat pitch.
Bazball approach is sometimes also favour apposition.

They will get enough time for grinding and apposition bowler will get enough rest.

94 mph, 96 mph, 95 mph, 92 mph, 96 mph, 95 mph

Insanely fast opening over for Mark Wood

Wood's 1st over btw :
1st ball 93.9mph 2nd: 96.1mph3rd: 95.2mph4th: 92mph5th: 96.4mph 6th: 95mph

This is the highest opening stand for the Windies' so far in this series surpassing the 12 and 34 they made in the 1st Test. A promising stuff, they just need to make the most of this half decent start.

If they bash Bashir out of the attack , Eng would really struggle . damn 53/1

"It has been interesting the way Bashir has bowled to Hodge. Hodge likes to play back and that has allowed Bashir to hit that good-length area.

It's all about the Aussie Ashes. That's why they have invested in Bashir and Atkinson.

Atkinson looks more like an Aussie than an English one .

They have gone for attributes over raw numbers
