What's new

England champions of the ICC Women's World Cup 2017

With set batsman in Poonam and a good striker in Veda, should not be difficult from here on. Still have Deepti to come.

So their two most economical bowlers are not going to complete their quota :broad

It was a very good game.

Well done England but India choked. They should have won comfortably.

shaz619 what did i say the english lionesses have won.

the British Raj karenge Raj. Let me speak to my people in my language.

we are the champions we are the champions no time for losers coz we are the championa of the world.

On a level, great effort by both teams; Womens cricket won today, India are going to find it tough to recover from this defeat

The English crowd seems to be more livelier today then how they our in the normal men's matches.

We are the CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD! Sensational :))) I was getting nervous for a minute but then found some old history books :)))

Congrats to the English ,good win held on to their nerves,we weren't good, sad for Mithali captained her first tournament in 2005 reached final lost to Aus and now her last wc 2017 reached final and lost again.

Worst time for India losing first to Pak and now to England in two major tournaments in the final.Hopefully it still inspires the little girls across India to take up the sport!

I legit didn't mind who won the game but as we edged closer wanted England to go over :)) man what an absolute botch by India, they threw it away but credit to England as well; womens cricket won which is more important and good effort by both teams delivering before millions of viewers and an outstanding crowd, fantastic game

The Men's team fans are mostly obsessed with Test Match Cricket, Tea , Cakes and Newspapers type boring bunch.

This was a more diverse crowd.

JaDed The women always get belittled and their cricket as well but truth is we just need more competition beyond England/Australia to make things interesting, everyone was incredibly invested in this nail biter; makes for great TV, excellent for the womens game

Let's gooo!!!

Indians lost!!!! Yessssss!!!!!!

Made me smile seeing India's players cry.
:D

Fantastic game,Goswami bowled her heart out to restrict England ,her last cup as well. Hopefully its not like a heart break and is inspirational for women's cricket, which is dominated by England and Australia.

Even from an England POV with it being a home WC the attendance has exceeded expectations and the Indians came out for this final as well

Two final defeats in two months in England, bad fortunes.

Regardless of who won, it was a great game. Thrilling and kept the crowd in it till the end. Good marketing for the future of women's cricket.

won't be surprised if many leave following/playing cricket after these 2 defeats, both chases should have been cake walks but girls paid really well being under dogs, should have won by 42nd-43rd over today

ECB give their report on the final

A flurry of late wickets – including six from Anya Shrubsole - took England to World Cup glory today in front of a packed Lord’s. Puna Raut’s 86 had looked to be taking India home before a collapse saw England win by nine runs and lift the trophy.
After winning the toss England started positively before initially some accurate slow bowling and then the wily veteran Jhulan Goswami pegged them back. Goswami, who made her international debut in 2002, starred with the ball to record figures of 10-3-23-3.
England’s eventual total of 228-7 owed much to players chipping in here and there – Nat Sciver was top-scorer 51 but Sarah Taylor (45), Katherine Brunt (34) and Jenny Gunn (25) all played their part.
While India’s target was not an easy one, England knew they needed early wickets and Anya Shrubsole obliged in her first over, nipping one through the defences of Smriti Mandhana. When captain Mithali Raj was run out India had a long way to go but Raut and Harmanpreet Kaur put on 95 for the third wicket to swing the game towards the visitors.
India’s platform then collapsed in a cacophonous Lord’s as England’s bowlers turned it around from nowhere to seal World Cup glory for the hosts.

That's not how usually things work, one has to know Indian society to see how women will be much more motivated now.
Also chasing in women's cricket is very different, people would know if they watch it often.

It hasn't sunk in tbh I tuned in for the final 32 runs which India needed to get, wanted to be a part of history and all; then England got their shovel out :)) amazing, great game; I will be treating myself to beauty and the beast movie, burgers and pizza's I deserve it :mv

Congratulations to the England girls! Very well played!

Sad for India. They had the game in their hands but threw it away by playing silly shots. They could have won by just taking singles.
Gotta feel for Mithali and Jhulan. They have given the game so much, but the world cup has evaded them.

shaz619 yeah all joking aside. Womens cricket is in the same place mens cricket was 60 years ago with england and australia dominating in terms of money and resources. so in that regard what indian women did was a great achievement to get to the final.

hopefully pakistan women and other asian countries can follow suit.

These England women are not spineless like the mens team #warriors

Great match, but a killer choke from India. They played really well for 75% of the match but lost the last 25% which mattered the most.

Great match nonetheless

Exactly, sad that team couldn't force a win for them, two world cup heart breaks for both.

Isa Guha doing a fantastic job as a pundit, what do you think?

Sold out game - well done to the Women's teams from all countries for building up the enthusiasm

It would have done great things for women cricket if India had won. I think Women cricket need a very interested India to become bigger. Maybe they would have started womens IPL as well if India had won.

Pakistan women has a long way to go. They lost all their games.

Was thinking the same thing :)) got some right mental warriors in the ladies side whereas you got timid ones in the mens side.

This was the first time in a long time where they've had to scratch and claw for a big win, plus even more remarkable considering they're in a rebuilding phase after the charlotte edwards era ended. The influx of talent is unreal! I've met some of their younger players in the development team and they get the same support / investment as the guys!

We thrive of hype, this victory would have empowered our women and women's cricket would have become a sustainable career in India and perhaps for rest of the world in long term. Congrats to England.

Cricket is a team game. You can't win solely on outstanding individual performances.

Indian team wasn't good enough and they didn't deserve to win.

??? India team was good enough we didn't win,if we weren't good we wouldn't had restricted em and neither come this close nor knocked Aus out.

If you were good enough, then you would've won, but England scored more runs and bowled the team out, so they were deserved winners. That's how cricket works.

lol i only watched the last 4 deliveries of this World Cup and this is the first time ive entered this thread so feel a bit odd giving my opinion..

But this guy is right. An Indian win here would have done for womens cricket what India's WT20 2007 win did for T20s

What are you talking about?Indian women were good enough but they lost, its a match,,we defeated the same England team in groups.

Cricket doesn't work based on binary,England was better today but Indian women are good enough probably top 4 teams in Women Cricket.

Unlucky Mithali, you fought honourably unlike the cowards who choke when the going gets tough :kohli

They will invest in their women regardless , this loss will make them want to win it even more the next time round

Maybe on paper India were good enough, but there are other factors such as the pressure of a final.

Indian players choked when the match was in their hands. They didn't have the emotional capacity to finish off the game.

They are good period, they lost a match and if you think this is choking check out the other chases of this tournament to realize this was actually a very good effort but we couldn't close it,not sure what's with the point scoring here, RR of 6 while chasing in women's matches is very hard.

Indian Women's team is as good as any, they lost today but have played well throughout the tournament.
