What's new

England end Day 3 at 112/2, needing 55 runs to win the 3rd Test in Karachi

Eighty to win as England race against the light.

Rehansonic Teenage Warhead comes in first drop!

You have to give the New England credit. They thumped the test world champs, beat India in one test then battered a much more powerful Saffer attack than this Pakistan unit.

This is absolutely stunning performance. I think England have relatively easier matchup against us (India). You guys have won 5 away test series in India including one off Jubilee test in 1980. While against Pakistan it's only third away series win. With only two away test wins for first 75 years and now add 2 ( maybe tomorrow 3) more test wins in a month. Away test wins in Pakistan are very rare and must be applauded.

Sad day and embarrassed watching Pakistan get whitewashed at home. Never thought this day would come but it's coming.

Tu*rd level performance.

But their W/L ratio in Pakistan is much better than their W/L ratio in India

Two down. Take a couple more before the day is over and things can get interesting

So far England gifted 2 wickets. That Rehan looked good enough see off the bowling. But he had to abide by team's philosophy

England shouldnt go after Abrar, just see off his overs and attack everyone else

thank you for taking the effort of specifically mentioning the "one test" detail. many "bazball" fans want to just club the wins against nz, sa, pak with ind and attack when correction is suggested.

You think Pakistan will take 8 wickets for less than 66 against England here?

Again, it’s highly admirable optimism.

It's not probable but its possible. Especially when the batsmen are throwing their bats at everything. Stranger things have happened.

Agreed. Some of the top teams of the past like May’s boys couldn’t do it, but Stokes has.

Rehansonic Teenage Warhead falls to the inevitable Abrar.

Captain Fantastic comes out in fading light to get his boys over the final line.

because of the history of decades old, ENG has easier matchup against IND? this ENG side is different and this IND side is different from all those old ones.

England surely cannot finish the Test today. They need some 10 overs to do it. Not enough time.

Im not sure if stranger things have happened than that to be honest. Pak are mentally gone. If Eng lose another 3 wickets then they will just tap their way to victory. 59 to get now. This is about as close to being sewn up a result as one can be without it being done yet.

Duck It gets fifty.

59 to win with eight wickets in hand.

Someone needs to put some serious heat on Ramiz, Babar. Perfect opportunity for Shahbaz Sharif to announce Najam Sethi as the next chairman

Pakistan have done well to take the match to Day 4. So that's one moral victory, also has taken two wickets already and avoided a 10 Wickets loss, Moral Victory #2.

It's kind of interesting that Pakistan have won only 4 home tests against England in Pakistan & 5 in UAE. We lost our first four home test series against England till 1984 & Pakistan won first ever test series against them in 1983-84. Maybe this is good strategy for the teams starting in test cricket. Just create flat pitches that doesn't produce results until your team becomes strong enough to compete.

SHane warne must be proud of this guy. He called Jadeja a superstar. Eventually he became one for India.

England has played 16 series in India (1 of them was pre independence) and 9 series in Pakistan.

Another brilliant day of test cricket. So pleased for our very young leggie - a Michelle in his first match! POTM for certain.

That was a superb day of Test cricket from England. Patient, mentally strong, and capitalised when the door was open. They turned the screw all afternoon and evening towards the victory. Fingers crossed for nothing too dramatic tomorrow morning and a 3-0 clean sweep.

Just learnt Rehan was not given ball for three hours?

With all due respect to Stokes wins his bowling changes could still be better.

Captains don’t have the benefit of hindsight. The game essentially turned on a jammy dismissal to a long hop. Its just as easy to say that if Rehan had come on to bowl earlier in the day then he might not have found that moment of magic and would have been battered out the attack, then Pakistan could still be batting with Babar on a ton. Impossible to say isn’t it. England are in a great position and that’s all that matters.

Against Pakistan these mistakes will not show up. Might show up against better sides. Againstt Pakistan literally anything he does works. He could send Robinson and Wood to open the innings and it might work.

Misbah effect!

Pakistan have lost 14 series at home/neutral venues since 1995 but none when he was the coach or captain. Their W/L ratio under Misbah was 4 times better than the rest.

So against Australia, and India away from home?

There aren’t many “better sides” left. England have already beaten most of them.

Why counting SA out? They can blow away any side in right conditions. Also West Indies has a wood over England don't they?

England beat SA home and away on the last two opportunities.

This England side would disintegrate WI.

England have already beaten South Africa convincingly, and their record of touring South Africa in last 20 years is excellent — they usually beat them away now, even when they don’t have a very good team.

England usually beat West Indies at home, but this is a country where England could do with some more away wins.

That's shocking. I think Pakistan lost only four home series until 1995. One each against Australia, England, New Zealand & West Indies. While we ( India) lost 13 home test series by 1986 including one off Jubilee test & one before independence. Since 1986 we have lost four home test series including one off Asian championship final. I think Pakistan lost 13 home/ UAE test series since 1995. Now both India & Pakistan have equalled 17 home series losses.

It includes India's 3 losses- One before independence, one off Jubilee test & one off Asian championship final.

It includes Pakistan's 3 neutral losses in UAE- Srilanka ( only one test in Srilanka)

Agree. Good match up against SA. My point is about bowling changes that has no real logic. KL Rahul did pretty much do the same thing of not giving bowling to Kuldeep for 32 overs against BD. We criticized him for that. We know India will win. Still mistake is a mistake. Whether it is done by stokes or KL Rahul.

What the hell was this clapping for Azhar Ali at end of play ? You are getting white washed here . Show sone remorse .

Pakistan focused too much on their T20 Cricket. They got carried away by 4 fast bowlers bowling great 2 over spells in spicy Australia conditions. One guy played through injury. In 2 tests they were reduced to opening with a spinner not the pace quartet. Format, conditions everything is different in Tests.

A shameful day lurks tomorrow when we'll be whitewashed at home, zero tolerance in accountability req.

Man what kind of performance is this from pak.England hammered Pakistan to oblige.Whitewash in home ground absolutely pathetic.Pakistan go low level in test cricket.

Don't agree with too much T20 Cricket being responsible for the defeat. Our run rates with the bat have been terrible vs England.

Not so long ago England were going through a terrible run with Joe Root as captain who was stat padding with loads of unimpactful runs.

Sometimes changing the captain with someone with a more pos proactive approach and having a different coach is enough to lift the fortunes of the side.

The team badly needs a refresh

As many have eluded to this. Pakistan test team is pretty average which is clearly on display. Completely out thought, little or no tactics and the captain appears to be clueless.

Players picked for incorrect format, no temperament/game awareness to play test match cricket. Just shambolic and the expectations should be quite low now from this test team. Really dissapointed with Pakistan test cricket team.

I guess if we win somehow against NZ, this potential 3 - 0 whitewash will be forgotten which seems to be the trend with PCB.

Overall, Kudos to England test team and management, just demonstrates a change in mindset and freedom to play can lead to great achievements. Greater test will be for England against NZ and Ashes!

By the way Root had an average series. Moved down the ra nking. Averaing a mere 25. Wonder if this new philosophy of batting is impacting his game. He can be positive. But overally he is a steady batsman.

England haven't won a series in New Zealand, Bangladesh, or the West Indies in over a decade.

Obviously 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 can improve their away record. They are already current away winners in SL and SA so this current series is an excellent continuation.

🇮🇳 and 🇦🇺 are likely to be the final frontiers.

Saud presser

"I know I haven't been able to convert my fifties into hundreds. Shots which give me runs, I am getting out on them"

"I will go back and see videos to find out the mistakes. Thereafter, I will try to make comeback in upcoming games"

"Neither me, nor Babar wants to get out after scoring fifty. We are professionals and know how to identify mistakes and work on them"

"Dressing room's environment is ok. We sit and talk with coaches every time. I hope we will make a comeback in next matches"

Rehan Ahmed's stunning five-wicket haul left England on the verge of victory in the third Test against Pakistan and a historic clean sweep.

Ahmed, making his debut as the youngest man to play a Test for England, ripped through the home batting on the third day in Karachi.

At 18 years and 128 days, his 5-48 made him the youngest man to take a five-wicket haul on Test debut. He was the architect of a Pakistan collapse of seven wickets for 52 runs.

Jack Leach had earlier raised the prospect of a three-day finish with three wickets in the first hour, only for half-centuries from Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel to delay England.

But Ahmed, held back until the 42nd over of the day, had Babar caught at mid-wicket to send Pakistan tumbling to 216 all out.

Even with only a maximum of 22 overs left in the day, England sprinted after their target of 167 - openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett added 87 in 11.3 overs before Crawley fell for 41.

Sensationally, Ahmed appeared at number three and smashed his first ball for four, only to be bowled swiping at Abrar Ahmed for 10.

Even then, captain Ben Stokes promoted himself to number four, but the nightfall left the tourists 55 runs short on 112-2, with Duckett unbeaten on 50.

One more stunning day in memorable series

This series had already produced riveting finishes in each of England's wins in the first two Tests and this third day in Karachi is another that will live long in the memory.

Though this third Test will prove to be more one-sided than the first two, it could yet be the most significant if it turns out to be the start of a long and successful career for Ahmed.

His spell either side of tea was beguiling and thrilling, the arrival of an incredibly exciting talent at the highest level of the game.

As he led England from the field as the youngest leg-spinner to take a five-wicket haul in a men's Test, thoughts turned to whether the tourists would be audacious enough to attempt to complete the chase before the day was done.

The answer came quickly, England looking for another landmark win in fading light, 22 years on from doing the same in near-darkness at this ground.

The sight of Ahmed, then Stokes, appearing after promotions up the order was pure theatre, but England were ultimately made to wait to become the first visiting team to take a 3-0 series win in this country.

Remarkable Rehan

Rehan Ahmed's bowling in this innings: 31% full, 67% good length and 1% short. 14.5 overs, 1 maidens, went for 48 runs, took 5 wickets with an economy of 3.24.

Until Ahmed came into the attack more than an hour into the afternoon session, England were facing the prospect of a long day and tough chase. Babar and Shakeel were set, the pitch asleep and the lead at 114.

In an unchanged spell of 12.5 overs, the teenager produced a mesmerising display in only his fourth first-class match.

There was a huge element of fortune in his first wicket - the stunned Babar pulled an awful long-hop to mid-wicket, where Ollie Pope took a sharp reaction catch.

Ahmed grew in confidence, bounding in, landing dipping leg-breaks and dangerous googlies. Mohammad Rizwan edged behind and Shakeel top-edged a sweep to give Ahmed three wickets for nine runs in the space of 17 balls.

In between Joe Root having Faheem Ashraf caught at slip and Mark Wood pinning Nauman Ali leg before, Ahmed enticed Mohammed Wasim to miscue to mid-off.

When Salman Agha swept to short fine leg to give Ahmed his fifth, the teenager kissed the turf then led England from the field to the acclaim of the travelling fans, including his tearful father Naeem.

England denied by the light

Ahmed's burst was not the only explosive spell by an England spinner - it was Leach who set the tourists on their way with his morning burst.

After Pakistan resumed on 21-0, 29 behind, left-armer Leach ripped through the top order with three wickets for no runs in the space of six deliveries.

Shan Masood was bowled reverse-sweeping, Azhar Ali was bowled for a duck in his last Test innings and Abdullah Shafique was trapped lbw.

Babar and Shakeel patiently restored order, only for the Pakistan implosion to kick start England's chase.

Crawley and Duckett tucked in as spinners Abrar and Nauman opened the bowling, Pakistan only slowing the scoring rate by turning to pace and using optimistic reviews.

After Crawley was leg before sweeping Abrar and Ahmed's cameo, Stokes swung so hard his bat flew to square leg and Duckett completed a 38-ball half-century.

In another part of the world there could have been the opportunity to add half an hour to the end of the day in order to complete the result, but the rapid sunset prevented the extra time.

'The best day of my life' - reaction

England spinner Rehan Ahmed, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was probably the best day of my life again. To get a five-for on debut is a dream come true. It is great.

"I have bowled better balls and not got wickets. To get Babar Azam out is a dream come true. He is a very good player.

"I liked the Rizwan wicket because I have been working hard on my leg-spin for the last two months with bowling coach Jeetan Patel. To get one to spin a little bit was great."

Pakistan batter Azhar Ali, speaking to Sky Sports: "I was more emotional in the first innings than the second. I was quite calm but I am a human being and was feeling some emotions.

"I played the wrong line and Leachy, my old Somerset team-mate, got me out. I have faced him a lot in the nets. It was my time to say goodbye."

BBC

Say what you want. Faheem Ashraf's confidence and utility was at a different level under Mickey Arthur and Misbah ul Haq in test cricket. Babar has totally ruined him and destroyed his confidence.

England haven't won a series in New Zealand, Bangladesh, or the West Indies in over a decade.

Well I am certainly looking forward to witnessing these victories in the nearish future. :)

By the way Root had an average series. Moved down the ra nking. Averaing a mere 25. Wonder if this new philosophy of batting is impacting his game. He can be positive. But overally he is a steady batsman.

I think he is just out of nick, having one of those spells of not very good form. Nothing too complex.

100% Root is out of nick, but he's still world class. After carrying england batting on his own for 2 years he's allowed a few bad series.

Nauman has got some fresh hair while he was away. Its a shame his bowling didnt get any improvement. Faheem and Wasim will not get you any wickets on any pitch in the world. Such is the bowling quality we're carrying.

Even if the target was 300 England would have chased it down.

Babar got his runs. Saud got his. Ballay ballay baaqi gaye bhaar mein.
