What's new

England finish Day 2 on 92/4 in response to Pakistan’s first-innings total of 326

Naseem bowled at 89mph consistently with some at 90mph.

Had a good battle with Pope but just needed to bowl a bit fuller.

Yasir is incredibly inconsistent. Bowls a few beauties in between some half track rubbish

Aside from that lucky Root wicket Yasir has bowled absolute trash.

Shadab should be brought on.

I feel, PAK bowlers got too excited with the early break-trough and trying to haste things, hence conceding easy runs. The toughest task is done - blowing ENG top order, now need to keep it tight and make Poms earn every run - 326 is long, long, long away. This is where mature sides are better - attritional cricket. Just choke Poms with few maidens or single run overs, and make them come back tomorrow morning, still far, far behind. ENG has a far better tail than PAK - if they can reach to a striking distance quickly, that advantage might be narrowed down by few runs. Back in 2012 at Cape Town, defending 339, PAK got SAF like 105-6, then AdV & Pietersen added like 80 at run a minute and SAF closed to within 10-12 runs.

Just make them feel for the score board and 3 tougher days to come.

if you know Yasir Shah, it takes him 6-8 overs to get into rhythm. Thats his track record. He always bowl rubbish in first 5 overs.

Game perfectly setup for an entertaining day tomorrow.

Would have loved one more wicket, but this was easily Pak's day.

Great day for Pakistan today, game is set up beautifully for the bowlers tomorrow

Signs are good.

Ideally we get these two out asap tomorrow.

And wrap up the tail under 200.

92/4.

England are in trouble but scoreboard could've been far worse. I think Pope has done well.

Day 2: Stumps - England trail by 234 runs

ENG 92/4 (28.0), CRR - 3.28

Pope 46* (67)
Buttler 15* (27)

Abbas 7 - 0 - 24 - 2
Shaheen 9 - 4 - 12 - 1

Good time for day’s cricket to end for Pakistan. Pakistan had gone a bit ragged at the end. Regroup and come in fresh tomorrow. Naseem Shah will come into the equation once ball starts reversing.

Yup, I think it was a good time to end. Hopefully, Mushi & Waqar have good pointers for them because YS needs some good pointers and SSA needs to stay over the wicket too. Good time to end, recharge & reflect.

Jofra’s interview should put to rest all the comments by the Sky team that he’s bowling within himself. He himself just said, I am not deliberately bowling slower. I am not a robot.

And Holding just says he does not agree with reining yourself in. MH saying it’s a good pitch to have bursts of full speed.

Archer is a very rythem bowler just like Winston benjamin former West Indies quick was, he will blow both and cold
And will leave his fans frustrated

Masood will be put out of his misery soon. Let’s see if Shafiq can carry him in this partnership.

When did he get put out of his misery?

This is what happens when you become an Imam cheerleader. You lose the ability to make rational posts.

Also stated let's see how naseem bowls in second and 3rd spell bisicaly saying he wont maintain that speed

Great 4 wickets for Pakistan ,
But Yasir shah form must be a serious concern, he is going at 6 a over !!

Pretty much happy but Pakistan need a lead over a 100 to have a chance to win this game

Naseem bowled too short while Yasir was Yasir outside Asia.

However you can't complain about Pakistan's day, they were outstanding in all disciplines and are in a strong position.

Definitely. I can see him running through the tail with his pace.

With Naseem Shah in squad, you always feel he will carry team through the sessions where shoulders start dropping. He has this gift of energy rebounds.

It's funny how Mamoon goes into a hiding when Pakistan or players he dislikes do well. Now he's waiting for Pakistan to do bad so he can come back and say I told you so, you fans get too excited etc.

Exactly. He has something which other pacers lack during the time when the team is feeling the heat.

One magic ball needed, only one and the English batting will collapse.

England are "miles away" from being the best Test side in the world, according to former captain Michael Vaughan.

Joe Root's team beat West Indies 2-1 in July, but are under pressure in the first Test against Pakistan after a number of tactical errors on day two at Emirates Old Trafford.

"Against a team like West Indies you get away with it, but Pakistan are a level up," said Vaughan.

"Australia or India will blow England away."

Root spoke of England's aim to become the world's number one Test side in his pre-match news conference on Tuesday.

They are currently ranked fourth and have not lost a home Test series since 2014.

However, away from home they have only won in Sri Lanka and South Africa in the same period and have developed a recent habit of losing the first match of a series.

Defeat by Pakistan would be the sixth successive series in which England have been beaten in the first Test.

Speaking on the Test Match Special podcast, Vaughan said: "I've heard talk that England want to be the number one Test side in the world, but they're miles away.

"Tactically, they get it wrong often and there are question marks on some areas of the team."

'England in horrible trouble' - Stokes bowled for a duck
On Thursday they surrendered the initiative to Pakistan with their tactical decisions after lunch.

The relentlessness of their pace bowlers helped England take three wickets for only 48 runs in the morning session.

However, with only five overs to go until the second new ball was available immediately after the break, captain Joe Root bowled his own part-time off-breaks in tandem with fellow spinner Dom Bess.

Pakistan took 27 runs in that period, beginning an afternoon session that saw them score at more than four an over on the way to a first-innings total of 326.

In reply England slumped to 12-3 before closing on 92-4.

"When they had two spinners bowling, they didn't realise how important that was for the match," added Vaughan, who led England in their famous Ashes victory of 2005.

"The basics of the game are trying to win the first 20 minutes of every session and you do that by starting with your best two bowlers, or the next best two if they're tired. They started with spinners after lunch and gave the momentum to Pakistan."

The last time England won a Test when the opposition made more than 179 in the first innings of the match was in 2012, against West Indies.

"When the opposing team bat first and get a decent score, it's been a common trend for England over the last three or four years, under Root's leadership, that they struggle to lead the play," said Vaughan.

"The England Test team are great to watch in a way because you never know what you're going to get.

"But we do know what we'll get when they bowl first. Always bat first against England, I would suggest."

We showed our Pakistani mentality in the last half hour. Our players were jumpy and it appeared that in their heads, they have won the game already.

Well this place is insufferable when we do well once in a blue moon, so I have nothing much to contribute among a bunch of hyper-excited fans, who now think all problems are over until the next time we get pasted which could very well be tomorrow.

Nothing new in SENA.

lol, we are going to get whitewashed, don't worry. We all know how you disappear when Pakistan is doing well, "forum becomes insufferable" lol seems you had a pretty bad day. Btw don't worry, when Pakistan gets into a bad position you can start contributing your trash again.

I wouldn’t say we were jumpy, rather we were exhausted after an emotionally attritional day of fighting. Which is fine given we’d started bowling on a high so time to regroup now. Not too different to the rain break on the first day for England. Just Test cricket...

Yup, there was a lot of “let’s see if that guy can bowl 90mph for long”, “I will be watching” etc. Lol, hope you gets bounced out by Naseem.

Much better start to the test then what I had thought. Was hoping we could reach 400 when Shadab and Shaan were at the crease. That we have taken early wickets suggests a good chance of winning this test now. Need to keep England down to near 200 score. Abbas is the hero bowling a splendid line, Butler is also our hero as well for dropping a catch and missing a stumping:cummins

An insufferable mentality will not lead to any substantial thought.

It’s easy to mistake arguing for the worst case scenario with wisdom or rationality.

Your thinking will prevent you from seeing the core issues of a problem as you cannot formulate a thought that contains some notion of risk and one that might mean you were incorrect.

And Holding just says he does not agree with reining yourself in. MH saying it’s a good pitch to have bursts of full speed.

It's the fastest & bounciest track in England- so if ever there is a place to go flat out as a genuine quick in England, Old Trafford is it.

Good performance by Pakistan in all departments.

For the batting, I haven't seen a Pakistant team use singles to bother the bowlers that well since Miandad. Masood batted like a real quality opener & although Shadab always looks just short of the skill level, the energy he brought helped build the partnership & reinvigorated Masood.

One of Root’s worst days as captain.

His brilliant seam bowlers gave him a way back into the match before lunch, but he threw it all away afterwards with a bizarre and irrational set of decisions leading to England completely losing control of the game.

Pakistan deserve strong credit in all departments. Superb batting, professional fielding, and most of all world-class (and at times unplayable) bowling. Burns, Sibley and Stokes were simply outfoxed on the day; a mentally damaged Root however played a very poor and scratchy innings, even by his recent low standards, which predictably ended in ignominious fashion and completed a miserable day for him personally.

My gut feeling after the proceedings of Day 2 is that psychologically this Test has more or less been decided already — although with the hugely impressive Pope still at the crease, and England’s record of their plucky lower order often digging them out of a hole, I suppose it can’t quite be considered all over just yet.

ben stokes not being able to bowl made a difference you reckon?

An excellent opportunity for Pope to enhance his reputation this morning.

“Doctor Strangegloves” owes his team a lot of runs.

I think PAK can win this by an innings.

Poor performance from England, particularly Root, Buttler and Anderson.

They are minnows now, can't win anything home or away except winning few tests Vs India at home.
