What's new

England limp to 31/4 (still 51 behind) at Stumps on Day 2 after bowling out Australia for 267

If there is one guy who can make runs here that is Root. Just have to wear down Cummins. Starc will be erratic in a couple of overs. Others are rookies.

How did zak crawley scored 267 against pakistan.

Take out that innings and he averages 18.8 in 25 innings.

Root is doing the right thing though. He is trying to be positive. Getting into shell servers no purpose.

Hameed offered no shot. But they don't review. Cummins wow. Even though captain he didn't go for review. It was awfully close. Let us see.

Australian attack on a different level to England's, Relentless! England missed the trick when the lead was minimum with 2 wickets to get.

Poor old Jack Leach having to come out in these conditions.

Very Very Poor Technique by English batters, and Australia is a brutal place when you get exposed like that.
The crowd will remind you of that every time.
At least the Aussies playing these days are nice blokes, imagine Warne and McGrath against these lot.

At one point we were talking about how much lead England should take. Now they struggle to avoid innings defeat.

England in disarray and will lose the Ashes tomorrow.

Sure ENgland has not been winning much oflate. But Ashes defeat should sting more for them. It might lead to some shake up.

Last over

Australia could really put the cherry on top here if they get Root or Stokes out.

All SilverWood and Root have been talking about for 4 years is planning for this tour. Every moment they had been thinking about this tour.
This is soul crushing, and surely a shakeup is expected. James Robert.

Oh without a doubt. Huge shakeup coming.

Figures. On a pitch where English seamers look half decent, the Aussies look like fire breathing demons.

Excellent bowling by Australia.

To be fair to England, this Aussie team would beat most teams in Australia.

The Aussies were very good value for those 4 wickets in the final hour. Superb bowling.

My estimation of Roots ability as a bat has gone even higher, none of the other so called gun players kohli, Smith, Williamson would be able to handle the pressure this man has to every time e Walks out to bat, and to think he's scored best part of 1700 runs in the year with all the carnage around him!

97 runs away from the record…

Feel for Joe Root, watching this embarrassing batting from other end all year.

ha ha haa
:)):)):)):))
This is turning out to be a Pakistanesque Meme Tour for England.

Even pakistan batting wasn't this bad the last we toured .
Even yasir shah got a 100.

Pakistan was undone by its toothless bowling by playing trundlers like abbas and khan

Is it the same pitch where Indians took Aussies out for 195 ?

Yep. But this England side does not have the ability dig deep like India did and really intimidate Australia with bat or ball. They play good, honest cricket at the best of times

Not good enough. England is not at a level to be focussing on away series wins right now. They should worry about the next season at home instead.

Losing 3 tests and winning only 1 in the home season earlier this year is the bigger worry. Losing in OZ is Ok. Higher rated teams like NZ came here only to get flogged like minnows

Root is a gun but...

122-8, start of an Ashes series, 1st test back from ban

We know what happened then

And overrated midget cheetahs like shah and musa

Agreed. Bit of banter from my side :)
Yeah Pakistan struggle more or strategy, bowling plans and fielding as well on those big grounds.
Even in 2016 Azhar's double could not win a match.

Reduce the Ashes to three Tests, England.

The longer the duration, the deeper the humiliation...

To be fair, even the best batsmen in the world will be scared and shaken to face this aussie pace battery at this late hour of play. One can only feel pity for the likes of Crawleys and Hameeds.

Yes, it doesn’t get much tougher than that mini session.

I can't imagine how scary it must be to face that type of bowling at the back end of a long day in the field. I reckon the best and only option is to just counter attack and put them off of their channels like Gill did last year.

His 45 (65) is one of the most underrated knocks on our Aussie tour as Cummins and esp Starc were breathing fire at the end of day 1 and it was him who took the pressure off with some crunchy shots against the latter. Without that, we too may have ended up 30/4 and the whole game and series would have panned out differently.

Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland produced an incredible spell in the final hour of play on day two in Melbourne, leaving England teetering at 31/4, still trailing by 51 runs.

There was a delayed start to proceedings in Melbourne after a COVID scare in the England camp. A statement by Cricket Australia confirmed that two members of England's support staff and two of their family members had returned a positive COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test. But once the contest started after a 30-minute delay, it was back to business as usual for both sides.

Nathan Lyon, the nightwatchman, played a handy knock of 10 before driving at a wide one from Ollie Robinson to edge it to Jos Buttler. Harris was looking steady at the crease and was joined by the new No.1 batter in the ICC Test rankings, Marnus Labuschagne.

Mark Wood though would have other ideas, bowling an absolute peach of a delivery to send Labuschagne back to the pavilion. Bowling short of a length, the ball just nipped away and the extra pace did the trick as Labuschagne could only edge it to Joe Root in the slips. England sensed a glimmer of hope with two early strikes.

England kept up the pressure and it would fetch them the wicket of Steve Smith. Batting on 16, Anderson bowled a ripper of a delivery to Smith which moved back in, took the inside edge and then rattled the stumps.

It was now about survival for the remainder of the session for the hosts and Harris and Travis Head did exactly that. At lunch, Australia were still trailing by 54 runs with the match in the balance.

Harris and Head would steadily counter the quality bowling from the visitors in the first thirty minutes of the second session before England struck back. Harris got to his fifty, his first of the series and third of his Test career as MCG erupted with applause for the hometown hero.

Head starting into the groove could not resist a poke against Robinson who was bowling a probing line and length. This cost him his wicket on 27 with Root again proving to be a safe pair of hands.

Anderson then showcased his complete wizardry with the ball, beautifully setting Harris up. Bowling from round the wicket, he got one to shape away from Harris late which caught the edge with Root taking the catch again. There would be no fairytale century for Harris as his knock would come to an end at 76.

Cameron Green and Alex Carey would see Australia through to tea with the lead standing at 15 runs.

The pair would fall in relatively quick succession in the final session with Green the first one to depart for 17. Leach trapped him plumb in front and the all-rounder reviewed the call unsuccessfully.

Carey would then follow for 19, attempting a wide slash against Ben Stokes with Jos Buttler gleefully accepting the gift.

Frustration would then build up in the English camp as the Australian tail started to wag. Cummins and Starc would build up a partnership of 34 runs with the Australian lead piling up. Cummins would finally fall for 21 with Anderson scalping his fourth.

The pair of Starc and Boland would add another 14 runs before Wood finally took the last wicket with Australia's lead at 82.

It would be a tricky proposition for the English batters to survive the final hour of play against a charged-up Australian bowling unit. After some near misses and close calls, Starc finally got the wicket which seemed inevitable. He got the ball to move sharply away from Zak Crawley who could only get a thick edge onto it. He was gone for 5.

Starc then trapped Malan in front of the stumps which was given out by the on-field umpire. Malan unsuccessfully reviewed the call and was gone for a duck. Starc almost got the hat-trick bowling a peach of a delivery which shaped away to Root who managed to survive.

After looking tetchy at the crease, Haseeb Hameed would walk back as a change of bowling did the trick. Bowled on a good length, the delivery nipped off the seam and took a faint edge off Hameed's bat. Hameed had to walk back for 7. Boland's incredible over would continue as he bowled nightwatchman Jack Leach for a duck, leaving the visitors in complete disarray.

Root and Ben Stokes would somehow manage to survive the final over by Cummins but the tide of the match had well and truly turned. England will now have a mountain to climb on day three with four wickets already back in the hut and still trailing by 51 runs.

lol no way Root is going to get the record.

Expect him to fall in the first hour of the first session tomorrow.

He's looked just as chancy out there.

Absolutely. There is no other way than to fight fire with fire. Yes, you may get out easily, but if you get lucky and score some boundaries, you can disturb their bowling rhythm restore courage in your dressing room.

If Root goes early this could be an innings defeat.

I have never seen an England side bat this badly.

Oh without a doubt. Huge shakeup coming.

Silverwood surely goes.

The bowling unit I think is ok- Archer, Overton, Mahmood + the current squad & Stokes as allrounder is a Test quality attack in there, no drama.

Root as captain? Probably depends on if he himself feels he can drive forward with a new coach (pun! But point stands).

Keeping- just go to Foakes. Butler can survive as a pure batsman or go. Because as a keeper he's killing the bowling unit & costing matches, not winning any with the bat. He's part of the problem.

The batting? Back to the drawing board. I'm actually shocked how bad this lineup is outside Root. Malan averages 30 in Tests and is the 2nd best bat in the team? I guess Stokes is better but. I'm shocked.

The lack of tour games I guess is a symptom of covid times. But they really look undercooked.

First time in years I've seen the MCG with pace and bounce, been a dead road for years

Yes, it was the worst pitch in the country (imo).

The drop ins were dead & lifeless.

But about 3 years ago they made some major changes to the drop ins:

* removed the concrete base from the drop in sections (was not providing the firmness hoped for & was just making it flat)
* deepened the soil base of the drop ins instead- hoping to get a more natural pitch reaction.
* sourced new soil & clay for the pitches- benefit of drop ins is you can get pitches from elsewhere (like Ramiz Raja is planning I think) if the old ones aren't working well. Nice & bouncy this lot.
* began leaving much more grass on.

So it was a major change to how they sourced, constructed, stored & transported the pitches resulting from all that. It worked pretty quickly. It's now plays like this for domestics and last years test was also pretty good, plenty on offer for quicks, spinners play a part in the game and runs can be made- just not easily.

Is it the same pitch where Indians took Aussies out for 195 ?

Yes. Playing pretty similar to last year imo. Maybe not quite as tough or maybe the bowlers were just better last year.

But India rolled Oz for 195 and 200 exactly on the same pitch last year.

Yeah very different from the Test Match i attended live in 2017 and 2018 vs England and India respectively.
The one with Cook's double in 2017, it was one of the dullest day of cricket to watch. Nothing happening, and on top of that Cook nudging his way to a double.. slowly. Even Broad handled bouncers with ease that day and scored a 50.. I saw the third day.
I believe they got a warning for that pitch and rating was not so good. CA acted proactively as losing MCG as a venue will be a big hole for them.

This looks worse than 'Johnson' series. That was bullying by one individual. This one is clinical. Australia loses players. SOme random guys come in. Result doesn't change.

Oh man oh man, I feel you. I was also there in 2017. Worst cricket I've watched in my life. Cook scoring 200 with only 2 shots, the nurdle around the corner off his hip and the dab through point. I think Trott who is also boring scored big too.

We had tickets for the first 4 days. Haven't been back to the 'G since. But now the pitch is better I'd like to replace those memories with better ones. Can't believe you came back for more punishment the next year lol.

So Indian pacers must be out of the world last year to have dismissed Australia twice at MCG within 400 runs!

Cook has to be one of the most boring batsman ever to play test cricket. Certainly most boring ever to score 10K test runs.

True. That's why I can only laugh at those ignoramus souls who say Gill is overrated or should be binned. Anyone who can do what Gill did in Australia last year, has to be fiercely talented.

england just avoid losing ashes in 11 days like nasser hussain did, 12 day surrender it is.

England needs to score 3 more ducks in this innings to break their own WR of 54 ducks ('98) in a calendar year.
