4. Pieterson
5. Vaughan
6. Baristow/Prior
7. Flintoff
8. Stokes
9. Swann
10.Broad
11. Anderson

Pretty incredible. Even though they struggled in the 90's, they have been one of the better teams subsequent to that. I would argue that this line up would be one of the better ones among all international teams in the last 18 years, probably behind Aus and SA.

I know some people might disagree with not having Harmison in there, but he was too inconsistent and injury prone.

What would be your picks?

Flintoff or Stokes, not both. I would probably pick the former as there is no real pace otherwise.

Swap round Vaughan (skipper) and Root.

It’s harsh on Strauss who got twenty test hundreds, was better than Tres abroad and better than Cook against top pace.

Prior behind the sticks instead of Bairstow.

Strauss
Cook
Vaughan
KP
Roooooooooot
Flintoff or Stokes
Prior
Broad
Swann
Hoggard
Anderson

I would copy-paste their 2010/11 team before Flower ran them into the ground. Many of the 2005 Ashes heroes who lost interest after getting knighted wouldn't make the XI:

Cook
Strauss (c)
Trott
Pietersen
Bell
Collingwood
Prior (wk)
Broad
Swann
Tremlett
Anderson

You cant have Stokes and Flintoff both. I will have Anderson, Broad, Hoggard, Swann and Stokes. Part-time bowling by KP and Root if required.

Vaughan bats at 3 and Root at 5 too.

Also, Strauss in.

That makes it a complete 2000s+ XI.

Your XI is hard to argue with. All rounders pick them selves because there’s no test class third seamer who didn’t fizzle quickly or was at the end of their career. Same for the specialist fast bowlers or spinners because they’re either the best England has produced or the best in 25 years.

And these were the only outstanding ones they’ve produced. With one exception.

For me, only Trott deserves to be in. Over Vaughan because most of the batters score or scored quickly. Root, KP, Stokes, JB, Flintoff and Tresco are/were just better. And one purple patch aside, Vaughan was a mediocre but beautiful batter to watch.

Trott was a rock for much longer, more consistent.

Their next best batsmen were Ian Bell and Andrew Strauss. And not good enough.

Flintoff and Tescrothik debuted pre 2000. So, Stokes and Strauss comes in place of them.

good team. You are right about Strauss being good vs pace, i forgot about that.

Flintoff is a must IMO, and i can only pick one between him and Stokes, i will take Fred as he had real pace.

Hoggard was a good swing bowler but is he really needed when Anderson and even Broad can swing the ball?

But they spent their peak post 2000. Therefore they are eligible. Any player that was in his prime post 2000.

It is hard for me to make an Australian and an Indian XI but I come up with this.

Australian XI:-

Warner
Katich?
Smith
Hussey
Clarke(c)
Watson?
Haddin(wkt)
Johnson
Harris
Lyon
Hazlewood

Cummins will get it once he plays enough games.

India XI:-

Vijay
Sehwag
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane?
_____
Dhoni
Ashwin
Bhuvi?(
Zaheer
Ishant?

Is Tendulkar and Ponting eligible?

Yes, both spent a significant portion of their prime post 2000. In fact, 2000-06 was Ponting's peak so of course he is eligible. Tendulkar was also in his prime though he had some tough periods.

Alright. I thought 2000s debutant. If we go by your criteria, then Australian, South African and Indian team will be better than the English team.

India? Their batting will be better. Sehwag, Ghambir, Tendulkar, Dravid, Kohli, VVS and Dhoni. But bowling, especially fast bowling isn't as good.

Aus and SA- i agree.

Hoggard had a better s/r than either IIRC and had big performances in most parts of the world. When it didn’t swing he got very tight and turned into a brake bowler.
