• Yorkshire leg-spinner Jafer Chohan earns his first England Men’s call-up with John Turner the other uncapped player
• An additional two players will join the white-ball squad from the Pakistan Test tour once the third Test begins

The England Men's selection panel has named a 14-player squad for the upcoming T20 and ODI series away to West Indies in October and November.

England Men’s squad:

Jos Buttler (Lancashire – Captain)
Jofra Archer (Sussex)
Jacob Bethell (Warwickshire)
Jafer Chohan (Yorkshire)
Sam Curran (Surrey)

Saqib Mahmood (Lancashire)
Dan Mousley (Warwickshire)
Jamie Overton (Surrey)
Adil Rashid (Yorkshire)
Phil Salt (Lancashire)
Reece Topley (Surrey)
John Turner (Hampshire)

England Men’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler is set to return for the white-ball tour of West Indies later this month. Buttler missed the recent Vitality T20 and Metro Bank ODI Series against Australia as he continued his recovery from a calf injury.

Yorkshire leg-spinner Jafer Chohan earns his first England Men’s call-up and becomes the first graduate of the South Asian Cricket Academy to be selected to an England Men's squad.

John Turner is the only other uncapped player, although he was a part of the squad that toured the Caribbean last December. The Hampshire right-armer was also in the squad for the recent white-ball series against Australia.

An initial 14-player squad has been selected, which will be supplemented with two players from the Test squad in Pakistan. A decision on the two players to join the white-ball squad in the Caribbean is to be made after selection for the third Test in Rawalpindi, which begins on Thursday 24 October.

England Men will play West Indies Men in three ODIs and five T20s during the three-week tour of Antigua, Barbados and St Lucia.

BUTTLER TO MISS WINDIES ODI SERIES

England Men’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler will join the upcoming tour of the Caribbean for the T20 series only as he completes his recovery from a calf injury.
Buttler will miss the three-match one-day international series against West Indies after suffering a slight setback in his rehabilitation.
Liam Livingstone will step in as captain for the ODI series with the Lancashire all-rounder set to lead England for the first time. A decision on whether to add a replacement player is still to be decided.
The squad is due to fly out for the Caribbean next week with Buttler to join up in Barbados ahead of the five-match T20 series, which begins on Saturday 9 November.
The three-match ODI series begins in Antigua on Thursday 31 October.

Jordan Cox will not keep wicket for England in West Indies despite Test role

The new England Test wicketkeeper Jordan Cox will not take the gloves against West Indies after being told to “concentrate on his batting” for the white-ball series.

The move, although not confirmed by England management, means Phil Salt will keep wicket as he practised his keeping at training while Cox performed media duties.

“I’ll be concentrating on my batting here,” said Cox, who has been named as Jamie Smith’s replacement for the Test series. “Then New Zealand will be my opportunity to keep wicket.”

Cox has not kept wicket for 15 months after sustaining a serious finger injury in 2023, but he is confident he will be able to return to keeping without any problems. “Keeping for me is something that I absolutely love. I’ve kept since the age of 11.

“It’s about building up. I’ve probably been keeping again for three or four months, so not long but, as people say, it’s like riding a bike.”

Cox has two England appearances in T20s, but is yet to make his debut in either of the two longer formats. First called up to the Test squad against Sri Lanka in August, he has spent much of the past three months carrying drinks.

“It’s nice to be around the environment and see what the best players do. I spent some time out in Pakistan with the T20 side two years ago, and I learned more in that month than I had done in my five years at Kent. Just being around international players you learn so much quicker.”

Cox’s chance in the Test side comes because Smith will miss the New Zealand tour for the birth of his first child, with the only other spot in the batting order possibly being available that of the under-pressure Ollie Pope at No 3.

“It’s professional sport, you never know what will happen,” Cox said. “Let’s say Popey goes and scores three hundreds, let’s say I score a hundred and win the Test match, what happens there? The media are always going to say different things but everyone’s trying to make a living and have fun.”

Cox is in the middle of a busy winter where he will be one of only two players, along with Rehan Ahmed, to be on all three tours to Pakistan, the West Indies and New Zealand. A confident personality, he fits the mould of the current high-octane environment England have encouraged.

“It can come across as rude or arrogant or that I don’t really care,” he said of his mentality. “I do care. When I say I don’t, I do. Cricket is such an up-and-down sport, you see so many people affected by it.

“I’m just trying to stay as level headed as I can. My mentality is that I don’t care what’s going on. In reality I do care. I really care. I really do. I care about doing well. I care about winning.

“When I was younger, I didn’t care. I was having fun with friends. I did well then, so why would I change? I’m having fun with new friends, so why should I put added pressure on myself?”

Matthew Forde bowling rubbish. Too full, swinging too much to a bloke like Jacks who struggles against anything shorter than 6m.

Listening to Talksport on way back from work and it sounds like a typical slow WI pitch where timing isn't easy.

Lewis powers West Indies to victory over new-look England

First ODI, Antigua

England 209 all out (45.1 overs): Livingstone 48 (49); Motie 4-41

West Indies 157-2 (25.5 overs): Lewis 94 (69); Livingstone 1-32

West Indies win by eight wickets (DLS method)

Opener Evin Lewis blitzed 94 as the West Indies hammered England by eight wickets in the first one-day international in Antigua.

The Trinidadian led from the front, striking five fours and eight sixes in his 69-ball innings, driving his side to within sight of their rain-revised target at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, falling shortly before the end as he attempted to bring his century up with a six.

His side were chasing a modest target after an inexperienced visiting line-up posted just 209 inside 46 overs, with left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie taking 4-41.

Stand-in captain Liam Livingstone struck 48 from 49 deliveries, putting on 72 for the fifth wicket with Sam Curran (37), but they were the only two batters to pass 30 as England struggled to find their rhythm.

With the ball, England seamers Jofra Archer and John Turner, one of four debutants in the side, frequently troubled Lewis and his fellow opener Brandon King, bowling at high pace and drawing edges.

However they were unable to make a breakthrough and Lewis began to settle, clearing the leg-side boundary on five occasions as he reached 50 from 46 deliveries.

Rain took the two sides off shortly afterwards, but when play resumed with the home side's target adjusted to 157, Lewis carried on where he left off, falling with his team 13 short of a win.

Captain Shai Hope came to the crease and hit the winning runs in the 26th over to complete a comprehensive victory.

The two teams will meet again at the same ground on Saturday (13:30 GMT), before a final ODI in Barbados on Wednesday.

Lewis shows England how to master conditions

Leading a youthful line-up to the Caribbean was always going to be a tough ask of first-time captain Livingstone, not helped by a lost toss where he admitted that, like opposite number Hope, he would have bowled.

Instead, his charges had to bat on a challenging surface that offered plenty of swing and grip.

Openers Phil Salt and Will Jacks combined for 39, but both struggled to unleash their trademark bombastic pinch-hitting and they fell in quick succession, skying catches off the bowling of Jayden Seales.

Jordan Cox (17), playing in just his fifth career one-day match, and Jacob Bethell (27) also failed to pummel their way into the game, sending leading edges off Matthew Forde high into the Antigua sky and into the hands of waiting fielders.

Livingstone briefly looked like he might be able to drag the game back in England's favour, striking three fours and two sixes from his 49-ball innings, but he fell tamely, chipping Motie's delivery back to the bowler two short of his half-century.

That was the first of four successive wickets to fall to the spinner, before seamer Alzarri Joseph returned to wrap up the innings.

Lewis and King, who hit a scratchy 30 from 56, may have struggled initially, but Lewis found his groove towards the end of the powerplay and went on to continually lift England's bowlers over the boundary ropes.

The opening pair put on 118 before King was caught by Will Jacks off Livingstone's bowling.

Lewis would find the hands of Bethell as he tried to clear long-off, but by that point the match was over as a contest.

Inexperience shows for young England side

With England's Test tour of Pakistan only finishing on Saturday, it meant a number of key players were not considered for this Caribbean tour, comprising three ODIs and five T20s.

Harry Brook, Brydon Carse and Gus Atkinson are among the players skipping this series before the pre-Christmas Test tour of New Zealand.

Meanwhile regular captain Jos Buttler was forced to miss out with a calf injury, while veterans such as Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Mark Wood have not featured since last autumn's World Cup.

It meant England fielded an inexperienced line-up in Antigua, including four debutants in Turner, Cox, and all-rounders Dan Mousley and Jamie Overton.

Indeed spinner Adil Rashid outnumbered the caps of the rest of the line-up put together, with 140 to 127.

Furthermore, some of England's debutants lacked experience of 50-over cricket, with Cox and Mousley playing their first List A games in 20 months and three years respectively.

It has arguably left them unprepared for the challenges of the longer white-ball format, with former England captain Sir Alastair Cook noting on TNT Sports "there's no experience of working out different situations, for when you're thrown into international cricket under increased scrutiny".

Even those with greater experience, such as the 30-year-old Overton, looked rusty, as the Surrey player was dismissed lbw for a first-ball duck by Motie.

With so many absentees and numerous debutants jammed between Test tours, the series has the air of an afterthought.

But this is the ninth of only 14 ODIs scheduled between the World Cup and February's Champions Trophy - England must emerge from the series with valuable experience or they could face another embarrassing international tournament exit.

'We have to get up to speed' - what they said

England captain Liam Livingstone:
"I think the test we have to come over the next few games is with the rhythms of 50-over cricket. We have to get up to speed as quickly as possible. We know someone in the top six has to get a big score.

"50 overs is a long time. We wanted to put the West Indies under pressure. Conditions change and it's up to us to read them and work out what is a good score. We didn't adapt. West Indies bowled well and we lost wickets at key stages.

"John Turner bowled really well and was unlucky not to get a wicket."

West Indies skipper Shai Hope: "Jayden Seales and Matthew Forde set the tone with the new ball, especially in the middle overs. We wanted some early wickets and they did that. The consistency and the discipline was the biggest factor today.

"Evin Lewis is experienced and has been around for a long time. You can see he is a different beast. He's hungry. I'm glad with the scores he's getting now."

BBC

In the post-match show, Alastair Cook expressed:

"Between the top 7, they have played 100 List A games if you take out Liam Livingstone and Sam Curran who have 160 between them. There's no experience. They are working out in different situations. You need to be thrown into so many different situations while learning the game in List A cricket."

"That's why I can see a performance like that coming. It looked uncertain and I understand why. Just for context, Rohit Sharma has played 336 List A games which is way more than the whole [England] team put together for just one player that is the Indian legend and Indian captain. With that experience, you gain knowledge and we saw lack of experience today."

England (Playing XI): Philip Salt(w), Will Jacks, Jordan Cox, Jacob Bethell, Liam Livingstone(c), Sam Curran, Dan Mousley, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Saqib Mahmood, John Turner

Brandon King has failed once too many in ODIs. They need to back someone else like Justin Greaves in the opener role.

Windies have 72 points. BD have 86 points. May take a while (if it happens).

Anyway, thread is not about Bangladesh.

Former England captain Sir Alastair Cook, speaking on TNT Sports:

"Those middle overs are so crucial and if you can get wickets you can halt the run rate. I think it's about how patient the West Indies can be."

"I really do believe you have to take it as deep as you dare then explode at the end, so that drop could be a crucial moment."

"If West Indies get to 280, they win the game. If they get 260, then England win the game."

Keacy Carty averaging 45 this year but his SR only 77. Scored at a good clip today though.

Good foundation to build on here.

Judging on potential of players coming through. Thread is about West Indies and ODI cricket though.

Former England batter Mark Butcher, commentating on TNT Sports:

"Rashid has been down at 42mph at times in this innings."

"He might try a moon ball against Hetmyer early, trying to tempt him into slogging one up in the air."

What an addition Sherfane Rutherford is to this WI batting lineup. And thankfully available for internationals instead of being a franchise exclusive.

328 in the end. Looks like they were targeting 340 on this pitch which was the right thing to do considering it favours chasing sides a bit more.

ODI cricket is nobody's priority now, random rookies being picked to jot up an OdI XI.

Tidy over from Chase.

In Motie, Hosein (unfortunately unavailable for this series) and Chase there's three good spin options to tie up the middle overs who can play in almost all conditions.

Chase Update

103 required from 66 balls with 6 wickets in hand. A tough chase but very much achievable

326 is the highest ODI runchase on this ground - when WI beat ENG last year.

What a partnership this has been from 160-4.

Need to be very disciplined with the bowling to defend here.

Seales and Motie lost the plot today

Result Update

West Indies 328/6 after 50 overs

England 329/5 in 47.3 overs

England won by 5 wickets

Not sure why Matthew Forde hasn't bowled his quota having taken 3 wickets unless he's injured.

Wheels completely fallen off for WI at the death and now means the series will go to a decider just like last year.

Result Update

West Indies 328/6 after 50 overs

England 329/5 in 47.3 overs

England won by 5 wickets
A spectacular maiden one-day international century from stand-in captain Liam Livingstone helped England defeat West Indies by five wickets and take the three-match series to a decider

Chasing a formidable 329 in Antigua, Livingstone's 124 from 85 balls saw the tourists home with 15 balls to spare.

Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell had hit half-centuries for England before the captain and Sam Curran's resilient fifth-wicket partnership left England needing 100 runs from the last 10 overs.

Livingstone brought up his fifty in 60 balls before accelerating to bring up three figures just 17 balls later.

Earlier, Windies captain Shai Hope had scored 117 from 127 balls to help the hosts rebuild after losing both openers early.

Hope was ably supported by Keacy Carty (71) and Sherfane Rutherford (54).

It means the series will be decided in the third and final ODI in Barbados on Wednesday.

Great win for England.

Windies probably had enough runs on the board but they just couldn't bowl well.

England always is a dangerous side. I am amazed at Windis winning the first ODI.

West Indies vs England, 3rd ODI at Bridgetown

West Indies win the toss and will bowl first

West Indies:
1 Brandon King, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Keacy Carty, 4 Shai Hope (capt & wk), 5 Sherfane Rutherford, 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 Roston Chase, 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Gudakesh Motie, 10 Romario Shepherd, 11 Matthew Forde

England: 1 Phil Salt (wk), 2 Will Jacks, 3 Jordan Cox, 4 Jacob Bethell, 5 Liam Livingstone (capt), 6 Sam Curran, 7 Dan Mousley, 8 Jamie Overton, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Reece Topley.

Wanted a field change but Hope refused. Alzarri then bowled 148 kph, got Cox out and then walked off the field leaving West Indies with only 10 men for the next over.
Yeah they elaborated and seemed like a bit of a hissy fit. You may not like a captain's decision but at the same time you can't walk off in a strop like that.

Score Update

England 117/5 after 31 overs against West Indies in the 2nd ODI, Phil Salt still on crease

Fantastic catch to dismiss Salt. If you didn't see it live definitely watch it back on a highlights reel.

England recovered well from the early set backs and posted 263/8 in their 50 overs against the West Indies in the 3rd ODI.

Rutherford was plain awful at the backend, even as a 6th option. England feasting on his buffet bowling could be the difference here.

Dominant chase by the Windies to win the game by 8 wickets and clinch the series 2-1.Back to back ODI series wins against England now.
Dew made it easier to chase but still the huge 209 run partnership between King and Carty was high quality.

Keacy Carty and Brandon King scored centuries to secure a series-clinching victory for the West Indies

The West Indies (Carty 128*, King 102) triumphed over England, who scored 263 for 8 (Salt 79, Mousley 57, Forde 3-35), winning by eight wickets.

Under the Kensington Oval floodlights, the West Indies effortlessly chased their target, with Keacy Carty and Brandon King scoring centuries to secure a dominant eight-wicket victory, clinching a 2-1 series win over England. Carty's maiden hundred, achieved in 97 balls, marked him as the first cricketer from St Maarten to reach this milestone for the West Indies. King, seizing his chances after being dropped twice, scored his first 50-plus in ODIs since July 2023, with their partnership of 209 being the highest for the West Indies against England in this format.

England, recovering from a disastrous start of 24 for 4 by the first powerplay, clawed their way to a potentially competitive total. Phil Salt played his longest international innings, while Dan Mousley showcased ingenuity to achieve his first ODI fifty. Despite Romario Shepherd's injury forcing Shai Hope to rely on Sherfane Rutherford, who conceded 57 runs in 3.5 overs at the death, England gave themselves a fighting chance.

In reply, conditions eased significantly for batting as King dispatched Jofra Archer's first two deliveries for boundaries. Despite Jamie Overton claiming his first ODI wicket with Evin Lewis's dismissal for 19, the West Indies powered ahead, reaching 65 for 1 by the end of the powerplay. Though Carty faced some initial challenges against Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone, he and King soon accelerated towards their target.

Rashid's initial three overs were economical, but King signaled a change in momentum with a six down the ground. An edge from Livingstone was missed by Salt, and King soon brought up his fifty, driving Rashid for a powerful boundary. Carty, overcoming an lbw decision through review, aggressively targeted Livingstone and later Sam Curran, bringing down the required rate steadily.

Carty, with a muscular pull off Topley, surpassed his previous ODI best, achieving his hundred and celebrating as applause filled the ground. King, too, reached his third ODI century, surviving a close call with Archer before being bowled by Topley with just 13 runs needed.

West Indies' seamless chase highlighted why both captains opted to bowl first. Hope, uncertain about the pitch, saw his seamers excel, reducing England to a precarious position early on. A notable early incident involved Alzarri Joseph and Hope's disagreement over field settings, with Joseph's frustration visible as he bowled.

England's fightback was led by Salt, who found support in Curran and Mousley, forming crucial partnerships. Despite a slow start, Salt's fifty and contributions from the lower order, including Overton and Archer, ensured England posted a total they could defend, but it proved insufficient against the combined efforts of King and Carty.

Yeah. With champions trophy coming, they should be looking more focused but atm they are looking like minnows.

Credit should be given to the Windies for their performance.

They are missing only Brook and Duckett . Root and Buttler are finished in this format.

Interim England head coach Marcus Trescothick has admitted that it's been a challenging time for the side, following their ODI series loss to the West Indies, in an interview with a broadcasting media outlet:

“It has been a really challenging time for us. Guys have just finished the Test series in Pakistan. There is another Test series starting in 20 days’ time. We know where we are. We have seen some things we have wanted to see."

“A few guys are really stepping up. Liam Livingstone, for example. Bethell has really shone in the short space of time he has had. The support we get is amazing. We have to try and stick with it and understand what we are going through."

“We have a better understanding of what our team will look like in comparison to series results."

WEST INDIES ANNOUNCE DYNAMIC SQUAD FOR 'RIVALRY' T20I SERIES AGAINST ENGLAND

Cricket West Indies (CWI) is excited to unveil a formidable 15-man squad for the first two matches of the upcoming 'Rivalry' T20I series against England, set to ignite at the iconic Kensington Oval in Barbados. A subsequent announcement will reveal the squad for the remaining games in Saint Lucia. This highly anticipated five-match series promises thrilling action as two cricketing powerhouses clash on Caribbean soil.

The series bowls off with back-to-back matches in Barbados on November 9 and 10 before moving to Saint Lucia for the final games on November 14, 16, and 17.

The West Indies T20I team has been a dominant force at home, remaining unbeaten in four T20 International Series since 2023. This impressive run has propelled them up the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, showcasing their resurgence on the global stage.

Head Coach Daren Sammy expressed his enthusiasm for the highly competitive series, where the team is aiming for consecutive series wins against the visitors. Sammy said:

“The T20 team is our most settled team with lots of experienced players. However, the difficulty will be picking the eleven, as every single player is challenging for a spot in the eleven. As we face a very good England team, I am confident that the selected squad will continue to play a brand of cricket that allows us to win games and this Rivalry series.”
Akeal Hosein, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran, and Andre Russell, who missed the recent Sri Lanka tour due to personal reasons, rejoin the squad, adding depth and experience for this exciting series.
