What's new

England v N Zealand | 1st Test | Lords | 15-19th May 08

i wouldnt be surprised to see england lose early wickets..this is gonna end up a one innings match i reckon!

England: 14/0 (4.5 Ovs)

England trail by 263 runs

so far its mills and martin bowling

waiting for southee

And for the third time this session the players walk off the field after the umpires find the light unsatisfactory. The crowd boos.

english weather kicking in?

wth is this

For the fourth time today the players are walking off the field for bad light. Tea will be taken now.

England: 68/0 (21.3 Ovs)

And the two umpires confer again. This time they are talking to the batsmen which means that the light has been offered and the batsmen take it. They are walking off the ground. Bad light has stopped play again.

again damn

southee was ineffective conceding 18 runs off of 3 ovs

theres still 42 ovs left in the day so players will prolly be back again if light permits

nz badly need a breakthrough and 4 5 more wkts :D

This time last week we were in the middle of a mini-heat wave. Just as the cricket arrives, so does the typical weather! :12:

Update 17:40 GMT: Well finally we have the official word. Play has been called off for today. So it is officially Stumps on Day 2. Do come tomorrow for all the action from Day 3. Till then it is good bye and good night from all of us...

english weather kicking in already

Stop-start day but England definitely gaining the advantage. Weather will decide whether the game sees a result but if England can get to 400 quickly (speed will be important if it rains again tomorrow), then they should be good for the win because the NZ batting is ordinary.

Those pie-throwing hobbits from the Shire are heading for an innings defeat here. :)))

Anyone going to Lords this Sunday or Monday?

I'll be there Inshallah on Sunday seated in the Grandstand and if the game goes into a fifth day, on Monday also.

Peiterson is chicken. During NZ batting inning, one batman played the shot that led the ball went to Peiterson head. He had chance to catch in order to dismiss batman, but Instead, he sat down to cover his face like coward ! :)) . I may not explain better, but try to picture in your mind :D

Long way to go yet for that, but yes, if England get to 450-500 it will be a very real possibility - if the weather holds up. Otherwise England may be forced to declare at 400 or so in order to get enough time to bowl NZ out for a second time.

Play still stopped
Eng 89 for 0 (30.2 overs)
In another news Harmisson has broken Hoggard's thumb in Yorkshire-Durham match and he is out for the second test

perhaps england should invest in retractable roof stadiums that are quite prevalent here in the US.

Vettori's an excellent bowler, really is.

Rarely bowls a loose delivery, has nice variation and is a very intelligent bowler.

England 319 all out.

A ton for Vaughan and 5 wickets for Vettori.

Watch out for Bottomside to backslide the oppositon tomorrow, he has often performed in these situations and I expect nothing less than an easy England victory tomorrow...

Brilliant century by Vaughan! What a fantastic batsman. 18 centuries, 18 fifties: I would assume this is the best conversion rate in the world.

As for the game, I agree with the post above, Sidebottom to lead England to a comfortable victory. NZ often collapse when pressure is put on them

I think Mathew Haydens is better! Something like 30 centuries and 27 fifties!

Thanks mate. Yes, Haydos seems to have an even more unbelievable rate. Two great openers of this era.

55/2. Marshall and Redmond gone, NZ a mere 13 ahead with 89 overs still left in the day.

England have bowled well. Disciplined line, and there has just been enough extra lift off the wicket to get the edges. They need more support from the fielders, though.

Taylor drives Anderson. 83/2.

Clipped off the legs this time. 87/2. Have to say that Anderson has started to err a bit in the last couple of overs, after an otherwise solid performance.

The draw is most likely the realistic outcome? or can Eng wipe out the nz batting lineup?

Sidebottom and Panesar to run through the lineup and England win comfortably.....

McCullum's innings will be important - get him early and England will have a real chance of winning, because even if Vettori and Oram resist for a bit, chances are they won't add very many runs. McCullum, though, could easily add 70 or 80 in no time if he gets his eye in - which would seriously reduce England's chances of winning.

Ain't gonna happen; England's too average to win comfortably.

How is gone! Broad gets him

115-4

Its all happening at Lords....honestly

its 2pm ish now.. and 6 wickets to get before 5pm?

Even if 6 wickets are achieved, Eng will have to bat quick to win..

day 2 rain.. and day 3 and 4 too poor and slow batting from Eng made the draw happen

Serves England right - taking the bad light on 2 ocassions when batting conditions were comfortable - although Kiwi expresso lightening fast speedsters might have played a part in that decsion!

McCullum takes one below the elbow from Broad - OUCH! What a bruise!

No arm guard.

In tests.. this is the problem.. most teams dont want to lose... but dont want to take the risk to win either!

193/4. 151 ahead with 43 overs left. Game is almost safe for NZ.

Oram got his fifty earlier.

its always safe when England take 2 days to make a score that NZ did in one day!

Nice!
Brendon McCullum retired hurt by Broad.
How nasty was that? Didn't catch it live.
Did that hurt, Brenda? Did it hurt real cold?
Did it hurt so bad you can't sign another cheque for 6 months?

lol@ perth !! i take it u dont like McCullum then

It might be his sly plan to be 'retired hurt' for NZ and suddenly appear for Kolkatta Knight Riders in the semi's claiming he is using IPL to regain his fitness, as well as earn NZC an extra $1 million

I was fully expecting you post a comment or two on that :D

NZ 205-4 after 73.3 overs
Flynn is frustrating the English with 19 off 88 balls

Came right back out at the fall of the next wicket, new ball taken, and still went for his shots.

Gotta love it.

Oram out bowled by Sidebottom on 101 off 121 balls
Flynn moving along with 29 off 118 balls
NZ 269-6 after 86.2 overs

Draw.

Which is why Test Cricket is Dull and nobody watches it.

I guess it's left only for the Cricket Buffs.

Crap weather in England is also a problem.

Wahay!!! REAL cirket!!!!!!!

I predict 3-0 to Oz, and 1-1 series draw (no there will be no played draw, the second test will be a practical washout. This mini heatwave will probably end when the cricket starts!!:()

That’s from another thread ('test cricket returns!')
OK it was the first test which ended in a draw! The weather actually seems to be getting better, i predict England to win the next test with NZ coming back in the final test.

I wonder if the New Zealanders will get the same pitch we got in 2005 at Old Trafford!

Met Owais Shah at Lords today. He was conveying his Salam to everyone at Pakpassion.net and said he intends to browse the website in his spare time in the not too distant future.

He also mentioned he recieved an offer from the IPL but turned it down as he doesn't want to jeopardise his chances of playing test cricket for England at this stage.

On his test chances, he sounded pretty demoralised and disheartened at the fact that he was overlooked once again by the selectors considering he has given his all of late, but also said Inshallah he will keep persisting and won't give up that easily, as he reckons he has a good 7-8 years of cricket left in him.

All in all he seemed like a very friendly guy who hasn't forgotten his Pakistani roots despite playing for England.

He appeared to be hurting for not getting a proper crack at test cricket and the manner in which Stauss was given the nod ahad of him, despite him outscoring his Middlesex team mate and putting in consistent ODI and county cricket performances in the last couple of seasons.
