England v West Indies || 1st Test Lords

England batsmen these days often place a high price on their wickets. So Windies bowling yesterday wasn't exactly awful.

This isn't the Indian tour of England anymore.
 
Absolutely right James. WI bowling >>> Injun bowling. That said, I rate the current WI attack as merely reasonable to good, definitely not great by a long way.
 
Bell and Swann isn't a bad partnership to have with 8 wickets down.

In fact, bloody hell, that is a ridiculously long batting lineup. Possibly the longest ever.
 
Pom-babwe 398 all out.

An excellent cameo by Swann. He's a good bat when he puts his head down to it (he doesn't always).

Now it's time for the likely WI batting collapse and innings defeat - but it's never good to lose all hope, despite my lack of faith in this feeble batting lineup (Chanders excepted).
 
An Innings victory on the cards here for England.

P.S:- I realise this is'nt India's tour to England ;-)
 
150 lead a steep climb for the Windies but they should have some confidence after fighting back.

The pitch is v.good for batting so if they play sensible cricket they could make England sweat a little in the 4th innings. It's the Windies, will throw their wickets away as they always do.
 
Bresnan squares up Barath, plenty of wood on that one. Easy catch for Prior. Shame for WI, tea was so near.
 
Powell is not the brightest. A wicket has just gone down and he falls for the short ball plan to put WI in a lot of bother.

Run out now. WI falling to pieces. :facepalm:
 
Its soo frustrating to see the WI play this way. Barath was the only one gotten out, was looking forward to seeing Powell bat, personally rate him very highly but their not doing their talent any justice.
 
That runout was IPL material (now that's an insult when you're discussing real cricket - Test cricket).

Just fancied a flutter and Shiv is a rock.
 
Want West Indies to at least put up a fight here, their mercurialness and talent reminds me of Pakistan, plus they used to regularly hand out beatings to England on their own turf, but this is a far cry from those days.

Game seems lost now. Both chanderpaul and Bravo can score centuries and england will still win, they can easily chase down a 100-200 lead. They can probably chase even more than that.

At least the West Indies bowlers had a good comeback from 220 something for 3 to out just under 400. They'll at least force England to bat again.
 
Wrong time to decide to sleep in I suppose. Was expecting that we'd be just handing over the batting but guess we (relatively) collapsed. Anyone want to describe the English bowling til just now? Threatening or WI incompetence that caused their wickets?
 
England bowling all over the shop compared to first innings, but nowhere near terrible.

The runout was utter ineptitude on WI's part - very IPLish. No jaffas like Jimmy delivered in the first innings this time.
 
What a terrible leave.

I'm going to side with incompetence on that.
 
windies really are a waste of space in the test arena - take a leaf out of gayle's book and all who can should take up t20 along with bengalis really - leave test cricket to the big boys

Actually batsman thought the ball would spin and it didn't. went straight with the arm.. as usual.

I keep thinking Paul Harris is right-handed and an offspinner. I forgot his "turn" would be the other way.
 
looks like chanderpual is the only one in the WI team that can play test cricket . This is frustrating to watch . West Indies have the talent but its just not being implemented .
 
Despite the slow rate, this is so much more interesting than the IPL, Chander is just amazing to watch (his batting)

What is there to rate? No first class runs, no test runs, no one day runs. After watching cricket for so many years, I've realised that being young is not an excuse for failure. People allow players under 25 to fail time and time again in the hope that they will magically become better batsman.

Most good test batsman were making runs early on, and not constantly failing. If you are averaging 20 after 10 tests alarm bells should be ringing, because very few great or even good players began their career like that.

If we add up the averages, England is capable of scoring 400+ on an average.

I didn't say it was the same, just reminds me of Pakistan, both unpredictable, plenty of raw talent.
 
Windies are quite predictable these days. They always lose.
 
darren bravo has major issues in running between the wicket. why does he need to take quick singles in TEST MATCHES?

Whyever not, providing, that is, one can judge them well, the way Mike Hussey does, for example?

I wonder if DM Bravo can legitimately be added to the Runout Specialist List, alongside such gems as Shane Watson and Inzamam-ul-Haq (indeed anyone not known for being lightning between the sticks).

but why take chances in tests? that too when you have been runout in the 1st innings? now i hope in 2nd test, he knows his role and thats to take singles only when 100% sure. even 1 % doubt then do not take it

tests afford you the time to relax a bit and take your own sweet time. doesnt mean go into misbah mode. just be careful.
 
I agree that taking reckless runs in Tests is foolish. (Runouts are donations of wickets.) However, a batsman like Mike Hussey can run aggressively between the wickets and still make good judgments. There is a fine line.

yeah. hussey is special in that aspect. plus he has age plus experience on his side. bravo on the other hand is fairly new. he will learn.
 
And after all those farcical donations of wickets to England... WI can still win this Test...

That's not going to happen though. :(

Very similar to pakistan's last two tours to england.

In the 2006 one, pakistan didn't get going until they had mohammed asif playing

and in the 2010 one, pakistan didn't pick their best batsmen.

Along with the bowling conditions, lack of match practise due to rain etc
The only adv WI have is the press don't hate them and actually don't mind if people of afro caribbean origin support wi.
 
You would have won in 2006 if Darrell hadn't done a Montreal-sized screwjob at Headingley.

2010 was a bit shady really, was won by a big partnership at Lord's that may or may not have been real.

Darrell didn't give KP out caught slip (uber edged onto his pad) and KP scored another 120.

Cook had a second life and added more runs for a similar reason.

Inzy got visibly cross, he knew what was going on.

Sounds abit like the 2010 odi series, i can't recall it apart from the oval.
 
Pakistan to be honest usually have a better team than England, which is why England usually lose to them in Asia, and sometimes in England too!
 
Just watching today's highlights. That Bravo leave had a bow and ribbon on it!
 
Swann has 30 wickets at 25 so far this year already. Not bad!

I think including panesar in the squad fired him up. He took that as a makeup call especially after Pakistan series where he was out bowled by Panesar. Since then, he has gotten back to his best. Bowled very well against Sri lankans and bowling well here too.
 
Expected situation is expected. Let me guess the WI bowled well in patches but didnt keep it up, then threw away most of their wickets and Chanderpaul is fighting England solo?

Correct on all counts.

The thing about Chanderpaul is that England don't have to get him out in order to win. He is too far down the order and bats too slow to have an effect on the course of the match.
 
Kirk Edwards doesn't look good enough to bat at number three in English conditions.

Drop him/swap him to 5 or whatevers. Shiv should be at 3.

And Darren Bravo is still learning but he is a good player.

I always like a clutch/anchor player at 3 and a quality flair player at 4.

Good contest here, England are going to have to work very hard for each of these six wickets.
 
Jimmy beat Shiv twice in that over, then Shiv nearly ran his partner out.

Better keep coming in round the wicket to him...
 
Fifty up for Samuels, obdurate innings and rightly receives warm applause.

Jimmy has tested Marlon with the short and the full ball but he has withstood it. Bit of ticker.
 
England have got pwned so far this morning. Need to be more disciplined.
 
excellent batting conditions. the only way you can get out is horrible batting.

good fight from the windies.
 
Samuels is playing absolutely brilliantly. He deserves a place on the honour's board.
