The Aussies deserve to win this one and it would reignite the series, so I'm feeling a touch embarrassed. Certainly not the way I'd like to win the Ashes.

Trott is looking dreadful at the moment, maybe move Bell up to 3?

England cant claim the 2013 Ashes as a win. This years Ashes will officially belong to umpires and the rain.

He has been disappointing, I need to replace him with Steven Smith in my fantasy team :warne

Ouch, Trott out, Smith in. What a day. :ajmal

I thought the best modern day batsmen performed under pressure? :13:

All the snarky comments won't change the fact that England are going to beat Australia in this test series and they beat your lot too right before this series.

Mocking good players when they fail or have bad games ain't changing a damn thing about the results of these two test series.

No, but making such absurd statements after a few innings does? He's a fantastic player no doubt but some of the drivel that came out after that hundred was..

Chasing that much is a huge task when after rain, pitch is assisting the bowlers. Can't really blame England but they should have played some entertaining aggressive cricket. If KP stayed a little longer it would have been fun. Rain is spoiling this match, Fourth and Fifth England will thrash the Aussies.

We shouldn't forget that England batted 140 overs in the first innings which accounts for almost five sessions. The top order has been dismal and England had a shaky start in htis innings but nothing to suggest that Australia would have bowled England out in the remaining 70 overs.

The big ex-players like Akram who are coming out saying Anderson and KP are the best in the world are entitled to their opinion. They are wrong of course. But it's them making the absurd statements, not anyone in the English camp.

He is the best batsman, no doubt about that. He avoided the surgery so that he could play the Ashes, need to respect the man. People are being harsh on him after he got out this innings. Haters are gonna hate man

ICC should make this a reduced over ODI match.... with DL and all the bells

If they can make a CT finals into a farcical 20 overs shoot out  , then whats stopping them from tinkering around with tests?

P.S. before any1 foams at the month this is a :P post.....

.....

Something like that happened in a match between SA and England. The ICC were all over it because of suspicions of match-fixing.....

Was it a sporting declaration or ICC enforced? Genuine query as didnt know that something like that had happened?

Agree but I felt the inclination to give that out was because of the 'on field decision'. That rule needs to be mended and we'll see much better decisions from DRS. Why the heck does an on field decision matter when the same thing was challenged? If you're using technology, use it 100% or better don't bother

Adulteration of human thinking with technology ...MSD couldn't have put it better.

It's funny the crying over UDRS, but UDRS is not the biggest problem. This is. Who wants to see a test end in a draw due to rain or bad light? No one. Such a boring, disappointing end. If a team manages to fight it out for five days to draw a test that can be exciting. But not like this. How is it fair a team loses out the chance to win due to weather? That's not their fault. Not that I'm sure Aussies would have won this, England I think would have batted it out, but the Aussies at least deserved the chance.

They've got to introduce retractable roofs in test cricket. In LOI cricket too, but at least there you can reduce overs and still get a result. Bad light/rain ruins games, and fans make an effort to go there and travel there only for play to be stopped. Not fair on them. Retractable roofs we've seen the benefit of them, time to introduce them in cricket.

Retractable roofs are expensive as caviar and plus wouldnt indoors cricket be more conducive to swing (with all the trapped mositure and muggy air?)- I am sure change in the atmospheric playing conditions would affect the match as well? And what happens when the ball pings off the roof...is it an out?

How about putting in a reserve day?

Get Hawkeye on that

Get Hawkeye on that

Which has error margins in it? Umps call, not umps call, distance left to the wicket?

Plus the point I was making was- if with a roof Ken Stuart Broad starts swinging it like Waqar- then wouldnt that be unfair advantage to the bowling team?

Conditions are changed by the weather anyway.

There are ways to get the moisture out.

Retractable roofs are expensive yes, but they last for ages and are very useful. Many stadiums these days are implementing them.

I dunno if it's financially viable to do it now, I've got no doubt that these stadiums will eventually get retractable roofs anyway. Just dunno how long it will take.

So much time was lost to rain that the two skippers decided to make it a one innings match.

One of them was Cronje so it looked suspicious after he was revealed as a match-fixer.

Stewart was qeustioned extensively but released without charge.

Welcome to England!

You put yourself in a position to win, then trust the weather gods. It all evens out in the end.

And which cricket boards you reckon have got the dosh to do all this stuff?

Australia (possibly)
Bangladesh (does the match even need to extend to 5th day?)
England (possibly)
India (yes, but why?)
Pakistan (PCB sure dont have the money)
New Zealand (nope)
Windies (lol are you kidding me?)
Sri Lanka (err they just about pay the players)
South Africa (possibly)
UAE (yes but why?)

Of all the major test playing nations- rain issue is most acute in England/Lanka/Windies and latter 2 sure cant afford it...

Be more sensible to either get reserve days or bring in a DL for tests.... or make them timeless again....

Cheers- remember reading about it....

what a shame, but the weather has been too good during the Ashes so far so this had to happen.

such a shame though, as it seems like rain was following cricket in the champions trophy as well!

We can't make all of them have retractable roofs, but we can start introducing them. Price will come down as retractable roofs are being introduced more. And let's face it, England probably needs it more than anyone :)). You could argue Bangladesh or NZ but their matches hardly last five days.

If I'm right there already is a retractable roof in one of the Aussie grounds. Just isn't used much that ground.

Perhaps the main ground or the one of that country's choice should be fitted with one to start off.

Countries like Windies, Pakistan, India, UAE etc. generally don't need it so much. So no rush for them to get them yet anyway.

As I said these roofs are expensive, but they will be in use for decades. Not to mention the increased crowds they'll draw. Fans love retractable roofs, and more fans will be willing to come knowing they'll get a game and not face the risk of massive periods of lost time for rain/bad light.

Congrats England. Commiserations to Australia, clearly the better team but weather intervened.

Even if England had lost this game, I doubt they would have lost the Ashes. Commiserations to Oz anyway. Well played to England for retaining the Ashes. I hope Ozzies give equally good fight in the remaining 2 games.
