What's new

England vs India | 4th Test | Southampton | August 30-September 3, 2018 | Day 3 Thread

Ashwin's issue is experimentation.

Just bowl 85 kmph in one spot in this pitch.

6 balls an over.

Forget about everything else and wickets will follow.

But noooooo he won't do that.

When you don't learn from your mistakes, you pay the price.

Make or break session for him coming up.

He has 3 4fers.

Played 6 tests in Aus and none in NZ. That will kill stats of any spinner.

This cycle (SA, Eng) he has done very well but if he cant rise up in crucial momemts, then stats are just stats.

Was great in Edgbaston. Team let him down.

Was injured in Trent Bridge.

But today he has to play a role.

Moeen has bowled much better than him uptil now.

I don't think New Zealand pitches are any more conducive for finger spinners than Australia or South Africa. It's why I think Nathan Lyon's test record is immensely underrated.

I agree that he needs to step up here and at the Oval, otherwise he probably won't be first-choice in Australia in the winter.

Ashwin is such a mediocre bowler without the doctored wickets of India that its not even funny.

That's why I don't rate him as a bowler at all. Extremely overrated bowlers.

If India loses this match, then anyway I think Jadeja ll replace Ashwin in the next game..

Ashwin was treated very harshly in the last overseas cycle which killed his stats.

It so happened that he was dropped in every pitch where there was some assistance for spinners but had to play on some of the deadest of dead pitches in Aus with a poor pace attack.

NZ pitches aren't easy but they are really poor players of spin tho. Much worse than all.

---

Forget Oval. If he fails here, he won't be first choice anymore.

Ashwin and Jaddu may both play in Oval. Or Jaddu only if we go with only 1 spinner.

What's surprising is England has 7 left handers in this team. If this is the level of competency ashwin shows against the left handers just imagine how he would've been thrashed if there were potent right handed batters in this England team.

England has done everything possible to keep the series interesting. First they dropped catches constantly in the first couple of tests, dropped the best allrounder in the series for the second test, kept a player of Moeen's caliber who has always performed brilliantly against India out of the team for the majority of the series, provided a dry turning wickets but still India is struggling to even compete in this series.

Frankly speaking, I haven't seen such a mediocre no 1 team in recent past.

Jennings played quite well I thought.

England building a half-decent position but there is still a long way to go.

Just kidding, India are a wicket away from bringing the best English batsman to the crease

Bairstow has been such a waste
India right on top should get two more quickly and it’s done

Kohli :)) It cracks me up every time I see a Pakistani/Indian giving people the bhen send off :)))

If England sets a score over 120 they will win easily.

Moeen will toy with the clueless Indian batters in the fourth innings.

think anything over 200 is a good chance for England. Anything below, will be walk in the park for India

Anything under 300, India should fancy their chances especially the way Kohli has been batting this series and now Pujara finding some runs too.

Root can potentially play one of the great Test knocks here, and it will make up for his string of low scores in this series.

Moments like these distinguish between the good and great players.

Anything under 300, India should fancy their chances especially the way Kohli has been batting this series and now Pujara finding some runs too.

Not even Kohli can chase 300 in 4th innings. This will be like 1st test again. England will win if they don't collapse badly.

Shami bowling like McGrath

Shami has that on/off switch.

When he is off, he will leak runs like crazy. Regardless of the pitch.

When he is on, he will run through a side on any pitch.

Wonderful bowler to have as part of an attack.

Make up your mind guys :inti

Ghanta England will win if they score 120.

We just have to chase 93.

Even target of 120 we will chase.

To set a score of 120 as the target England will have to score 146 in their second innings. That's what I meant. Looks like my previous post wasn't eloquent enough.

Anyway, India isn't going to get past 100 in the fourth innings. Barring kohli and pujara to some extent none of the indian batters has the ability to play quality spin bowling.

This match is over we can not chase above 100, 130 will be possible if Kohli scores 70% of it , it's 3-1

He has been very poor in spell 2.

Kohli shouldn't hav removed him when he looked threatening in spell 1.

If he cant perform here, then send him back to India.

Cricket is about winning crucial moments and Ashwin is yet to win a game for his country in SENA.

Yeah not sure how long can Bumrah and Shami keep going full tilt. Ashwin needs to step up now.

Totally wrong!

Bowling to right handers on this pitch is far easier.

The rough patch is on 5th/6th stump of a right hander.

There is no rough patch for a left hander.

English spinners has 10 right hander to bowl to. Ashwin has 4.

Instruction comes from the dressing room via Jaddu to Ash.

He then starts using his body properly and instantly becomes more accurate and even got one to turn. :))

But this guy bowled everything 90+ kmph. It's too fast. You will get minimal turn at that speed.

Bowl at 85 kmph and things will happen.

If Ashwin wasn't 100% why did they pick him? Jaddu is a really good spinner.

Is Gavaskar is commentary? is he talking aboiut how Ashwin is ineffective after revealing his secrets to Mark Wood?

Difference between Moeen and Ashwin in this match is that Moeen bowled a little slower, didn't experiment and was constantly hitting the rough area. Michael Holding in the post lunch session said that Moeen bowled 27% of his balls in that area whereas on average a spinner is able to bowl only 6% of his balls in that area.

Idiot root, what have u done.

But no worries, England's bottom five are better than their top five.

That could be the key moment in the match and India should capitalize on that! If they get Curran out cheaply then its advantage India!

Shami making up for abysmal performance of Ashwin until now and getting the right hand batsmen out without using rough areas on pitch.

India's game this they will chase anything now. Englands fast bowlers have looked toothless last two matches

I just watched the replay of Root's runout. That was really poor by the captain. He didn't even bother diving in. He ran quickly then didn't seem to be aware where the ball was going. Really really poor.

England will still get a lead of 180. Stokes, Buttler and Curran only need to get 80 between them. Add another 20 from the tail and the lead is 200.

Get the feeling his stiff back played a part.

Edges flying through the slips has been a feature of this series. Another moral victory for the bowler there, but most importantly, 4 runs for England.

Indian bowling is amazing. No freebies at all.
But 160 will be challenging. 200 should be the target for England.

Batting last against Moeen will be hard. Anything above 170 and England will be the favourites.

The way Indians bowling doubt that is possible now. Brilliant bowling by Sharma batsman look clueless against him even ash looked dangerous last over.

Curran will attack from ball 1 and hopefully get a quickfire 20 odd. Buttler is in form and should get 40 odd and stokes will get around 30 odd. Even if stokes and buttler get out quickly broad, Curran and Rashid will tee off and with a bit of luck get the lead up to 150-160.

Finally Ashwin bowling like a good offspinner. A little bit of loop, spin and deliveries that actually leave the left handers like how offspin is supposed to be.

I have a feeling Kohli will fail in the 4th innings. Moeen has always been lethal against India in England. India can't chase any total without Kohli.

He fails by experimentation. Then keeps it simple. Is successful then goes back to bowling random stuff

Need to try Jadeja Ashwin fails here

Lol, such a big rough outside right handers off stump and ashwin still can't use it. Bowled a juicy half coley to butler.

The way ball is jumping out of the rough, maeen must be itching to bowl against Indian batters on this wicket.

Lead is now above 100. England must target 200+ plus lead and they will be favorite.

Jaddu is a must next game whether Ashwin succeed or not here.

Ashwin can try for 2nd spinner slot if team decides to go that route.

Very disappointing.

One wicket can open the floodgates for him tho.

Tough conditions in which to bat, but Root’s dismissal was seriously shoddy.

Seriously! It's very frustrating.

How hard is it to bowl 6 conventional off spinners in one spot?

He is imparting very little body in his balls.

The split screen comparison of his action in 1st vs 4th test is staggering.

Why did the team management not pick Jaddu?

Moeen Ali is gonna be a monster here. lol.

Eng should win this game. 200 lead will seal it.
