After relentless rain forced the abandonment of the first one-day international, England will be looking for a more favourable result as they take on Pakistan in the second ODI on Saturday, 11 May in Southampton.

Overview

England v Pakistan
2nd ODI
The Ageas Bowl, Southampton
Saturday, 11 May; 11:00am local time, 10:00am GMT

Asking Pakistan to bat first turned out to be the right decision as the hosts made early in-roads before the rain gods decided to intervene. Jofra Archer got a short but effective spell in and picked up another ODI wicket in form of Fakhar Zaman to register figures of 1/6 in four overs.

Pakistan will not be too disappointed with how things unfolded on Wednesday considering their shaky start. They lost Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam, cheaply accumulating just 80 in 19 overs. Although Imam-ul-Haq managed to score some handy runs, they will need more than just a competitive total to challenge the strong English batting line-up in the games to follow.

Key players

Jonny Bairstow (England): If Bairstow's form in the Indian Premier League this year was anything to go by, we can expect fireworks on the Rose Bowl come Saturday. In fact, in the last ODI that Bairstow played here, the 29-year-old smashed a 114-ball 141* two years ago, which still remains his highest score in ODIs.

Mohammad Amir (Pakistan): Amir's position continues to be a source of interest as the 27-year-old awaits a chance to prove himself. With the first ODI washed out, he has four more games to impress the selectors and sneak into the World Cup squad.

Conditions

The weather does not look as bleak as it was in the first ODI. For the most part, it is expected to be sunny and we should be able to get a full game in. The last ODI played here was in September 2017, when England easily chased West Indies' 288 with 12 overs to spare, all thanks to the blistering Bairstow.

Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c), Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abid Ali, Babar Azam, Haris Sohail, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim, Yasir Shah, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Junaid Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Amir, Asif Ali

Imam ul Haq was very quick to point out his high average but that is at expense of a very low SR for modern day cricket. This issue needs to be addressed by Arthur. It is a big worry when only Afghanistan have lower RR in first 10 overs.

How's the weather looking in Southampton boys. Gonna just stay awake after sehri to watch the match so the rain best stay away.

Yes a SR of 79 for a modern day opener is criminal. He better look to show more intent going forward.

Sold out Ageas Bowl, should be a great atmosphere hopefully Pakistan puts on a show!

Sheesh Imam's numbers against the top 5 teams (Aus, Eng, SA, NZ, Ind) are even more worrying

Matches - 14
Runs - 440
Ave - 36
SR - 70

Def need to work on that strike rate, at the bare minimum he could rotate the strike better early on.

He should try to construct an innings.

The more he tries to attack, the more terrible he looks.

Our problem is not 100 off 130 balls.

Our problem is no one stays at the crease long enough to put any sort of substance in the total. Fakhar is a big hit and miss and Babar has yet to prove he can score enough runs against good opposition (albeit 7 of his 8 centuries against SL, West Indies etc and the 8th one was a selfish knock chasing 370).

The less said about Sarfraz the better and the lower order tail of Asif hardly inspires confidence.

I am not averse to Imam batting out 100 off 120 balls if Pakistan can get 270 or 280 runs.

Mohammad Amir has picked up viral infection. He will not be available for today match.

Hasnain. I don't know why people have soured on him so soon. He has given a good account of himself so far.

These are the exact games he needs to get ready for the world cup. Don't we know enough of Yasir, JK etc to know what Pakistan are going to get?

At least the weather looks good. Hate it when you look upto a match for 3 bloody days and then the weather spoils everything.

Pakistan have won the toss and opted to bowl in the 2nd ODI against England;

Yasir Shah Playing, highlights what a terrible insight Mickey has about spin bowling. Umar Khan and Bilal Asif should have been tried in this series.

Pretty sure England will pummel Yasir to all sorts so hopefully the pak think tank will finally give up on Yasir

What a joke...

Our preparations are in complete shambles. Two seniors in the side one of whole hasn’t played in over a month, young leg spinner ill and a senior pathetic ODI bowler picked instead of him...

England batting is probably the most destructive in world cricket

320 bare minimum from England

In all this excitement, you have all not noted that Archer not playing lol!

We will have to chase around 270.

Atleast that’s my prediction.

Pakistan doing no good by selecting Yasir, Faheem and then opting to bowl.

Few records of batting will be broken, I reckon.

May be another 400 on the cards.

Sarfraz should man up and give Hasan Ali new ball and not the pseudo-allrounder Faheem.

Yasir out Junaid in,
Faheem out, Hasnain in could've been ideal.

They wana see how junaid perform here as well. As he is also listed in replacement for WC spot. I would keep Hasnain and Amir for WC and drop fahim and Junaid.

My prediction:
England: 333 runs on the board!
Pakistan lose by 33 or more runs!

I think england have sidelined archer from the world cup ,with jofra not playing already gives some clues same goes for amir.

Wow gonna be a fun feast with Faheem and Yasir
I would play hasnain over Yasir even on spinning track

Pretty sure it's the complete opposite, they've already decided he's in. Now they've gotta look at everyone else and decide who to drop.

Lol Amir not playing.

Hoping we see 500 scored today.

Pathetic selection

Watch Faheem be the best bowler today from both sides. Hugely underrated as a bowler & Ofc the knives are out after one bad bowling performance.

Typical

Sreve harminson has also gone with my analysis and rambo is also suspicous of amirs illness.

No. Babar and Haris are more than capable of consistently getting to 270 -280. Even if they come in 40-2
Everybody else has to attack more

I have no clear about Amir, picking Archer last game then deciding after that masterclass that he's not going to make the world cup squad makes zero logical sense. They're clearly thinking he's probably already in.

I think that’s the worst XI Pakistan could have picked. The batting looks really thin, the bowling looks very thin aswell.

Clue*

Induction of archer could have caused a rift between players and morgan has already indicated that in his interviews

“It is not about winning the series, it is about testing the bench strength.”

so Faheem is playing as the 3rd pacer again!

It's not the players .. its the strategies that make us worse than we are!

Conditions are tailor made for Asif Ali who has no excuses not to perform here. Belter of a pitch and easy to hit through the line.
