After rain and bad light hindered play for most of the second Test, the series remains 1-0 in England's favour going into the final match in Southampton.

Overview
England v Pakistan, 3rd Test
The Rose Bowl, Southampton
Friday, 21 August - Tuesday, 25 August, 11am local time, 10am GMT

While England are on the verge of completing another series victory in the home summer, Pakistan, who haven't lost a series in the country since the end of 2010, will look to maintain their record.

There's a bigger picture that the teams will also be eyeing: the ICC World Test Championship. England are placed third behind India and Australia with 279 points. A win will take them past Australia into second position.

Pakistan, on the other hand, are fifth with 153 points. A win will take them above New Zealand to fourth, but they will still be quite a distance behind third-placed England.

Pakistan gave a game to Fawad Alam ahead of Shadab Khan to strengthen the batting, but the veteran domestic batter was dismissed for a four-ball duck in Pakistan's only innings. It's too small a sample size to go back on their plans, so it is likely that they will field the same team for the final Test.

If they do ponder a change, it could be rotating out one of the pace bowlers, but that seems unlikely given how they have fared in the series so far.

England replaced Ben Stokes with Zak Crawley, and as he did against West Indies in Southampton last month, the Kent batsman impressed with a half-century.

The only change England might ponder is rotating their seamers, although they had minimal workload in the last Test, to bring in Mark Wood or Jofra Archer to add some pace to the bowling attack.

However, with the forecast not overly great for a few days of the third Test, England might stick to Anderson, who was masterful with the ball in Pakistan's first innings in the second Test.

Remember the last time

The bowling attacks were in excellent rhythm in the second Test. While Anderson and Stuart Broad shared seven wickets in the first innings, Sam Curran and Chris Woakes were also on the money. For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Abbas were sharp with the new ball while Naseem Shah, as usual, bowled with good pace.

England extended their unbeaten streak in home Test series to 13 with the draw in the second Test guaranteeing that Pakistan could not claim the series. Their last series loss at home came against Sri Lanka in 2014. Since then, excluding the ongoing series, they have won eight Test series and drawn four.

Pakistan last won an away Test match in 2018, against England. Since then, they have lost six successive away games – three in South Africa, two in Australia and one this series in England – before rain forced a draw in the last Test.

What they said

Jonathan Trott, England batting coach: "It is about going out there and combating the conditions we find out there and both are capable of doing that. We've seen them both [Sibley and Crawley] bat time in the first class game and Dom Sibley in Test match cricket so we'd like to see some more of that."

Waqar Younis, Pakistan bowling coach: "Conditions were tough, Rizwan played a brave, positive and calculated knock. It's not easy batting with the tail, but he added small partnerships and got Pakistan to a total where we all were feeling confident and were in the game."

Sohail Khan should play

He has been in great form

Same bowling attack. Likes of Sohail, Imran and Faheem will get pummelled by these English batsmen due to lack of pace.

Will barely get three days. Two full days and then frequent showers and strong winds.

They blew this in Manchester...

As per current forecasts, it looks like complete 90 overs on days 1, 2 and 3, 45 overs on day 4 and washout on day 5. Lets see if we can force a result in 315 overs.

I very much doubt there would be any changes to line up, even though Asad deserves to be dropped but Pak qould be hoping for his one good inni g of the series. Fawad would be played again but that maybe for his career, as he may not be considered again after another couple of failures in this match.
He would perform better away from England but will not get another chance after this match I am afraid.

If England bat first and put 300+ on the board, 3.5 days would be sufficient for them to wrap up the match.

We need to get lucky with the toss again and bat first. That is the only way we can escape with a draw provided that little to no cricket is played on day 4 and 5.

A 1-0 defeat would be very flattering indeed, since this series had 3-0 England written all over it.

Update via BBC

Currently dry, but cloudy & very windy.

Shaheen looks all set!

Sohail khan isnt fit enough for test cricket , in the second innings he will become a liability. Should not have been selected in the first place.

More news from the England bubble:

Ben Foakes and Ollie Robinson will leave the bio-secure bubble this morning and will be available to play in the Bob Willis Trophy tomorrow.

Robinson will play for Sussex against Middlesex at Radlett.

Foakes will be at the Kia Oval for Surrey against Kent.

Lol it started to rain sixty seconds before the toss was due!!!!!!

Atm, wouldn’t the perfect Pakistan team be...Fawad for Asad, Imam for Azhar and the empty place goes to Shadab

Please note that although it is grey and overcast, it’s windy too.

You often bowl in these conditions EXCEPT for the wind. It can take away the swing sometimes.

Fawad survives!

Five batsmen aged over 30!

Three aged 34 or above!

Fawad again, Thick tank at it again, its already advantage England, it X vs XI Players. Sohail for fawad would have been ideal, and he would have also scored more than him.

Prior to the toss, Pakistan had a 20% chance of escaping with a draw. Now, our chances have been reduced to 0.1%.

Imam for Asad was also a must, but on flip side atleast now after another expected failure by asad there won't be any excuses left for retaining him, but in real world he ain't going anywhere even if he get a king pair, but one can dream, meri sadgi dekh kya chahta hun.

England batting looks very weak, especially without Stokes. It has to be the weakest batting line up for England in recent times. Burns, Sibley, Crawley etc is like a non existent top order. Infact I have more confidence in their bowlers to score more runs than top order. They should have never dropped Curran who is a better all round cricketer than Archer. England needs to sort out their batting line up before away tours in winter...else they will get beaten badly.

What do you reckon our chances are of winning, Nostradamus?

Archer will be bowling at his top speed in this match. You cannot leave him out when he is physically and mentally ready.

I wanted wood instead of archer. archer better get a 5 fer this test.

I predict a strong opening stand from burns and sibley, they have been in bad form this series and should bounce back. They are eng's best opening pair after cook and strauss

Well there goes the series for Pakistan.

They're going to rue that missed opportunity at Old Trafford for a long long time.

No doubt we will regret old trafford big time but i was expecting a 3 0 whitewash and yet i think we have been the better team over 2 tests so far

Lets not bash pak too much. 1st test was a freakish loss , they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

2nd test match saw eng in a weaker position, with 110-4 . Who knows what would have happened if rain was not there.

Pak have done really well this tour. It shows the importance of coming to the tour 2 months early and preparing.

England have been very lucky in this series. Fluke partnership in OT..got away with Rain in 2nd test and then win the toss in the final test

Imam for Asad would have been ideal... as ideal as it can be with AA a being fixed slot in the side.

Andrew Strauss, meanwhile, says Pakistan can make the early running in this game, despite losing the toss...

"The bowling is potent and there is great variety. As a captain, you always feel you have all bases covered. There are all high-class performers and have shown in this series they can trouble the England batsmen. This morning could be tough for England – there will be a bit of nibble in this pitch and Pakistan have an opportunity to grab the momentum."

Quite the opposite, this is engs best batting line up after a long time. Burns and Sibley have been in bad form this series, but they are engs best opening pair after cook and strauss. Crawley and Pope are the first young talented and potentially world class batsmen eng have produced after a long time, probably a decade.

The worst eng batting line up was in the 2017 ashes. Stoneman, vince, malan. That was horrible

Only fluke in the first Test was Masood scoring 150.

As an Englishman, I’m glad we are batting.

As an Englishman, can you pls inform us are there no better openers in the country? Burns & Sibley does not look international class. They will get brutally exposed in away tours.

Pretty interesting pictures. Before going to the fielding positions, Azhar’s huddle included his XI, Misbah and Younus.

Waqar and Mushi sat by the boundary either uninterested or knowing the huddle is just for the XI. Maybe more the latter.

Pakistan won the only test vs Eng in 2010 when they bowled first, won one out of (2-2) drawn series bowling first and won one out of 1-1 drawn bowing first. So you never know.

Shaheen bowling at 81 mph thunderbolts yet people are having a dig at naseem...wahab sohail all would struggle ..abbas is an execption as he is made for english conditions although this pitch looks flat...

Pakistan Lineup:

The problem for pakistan here is they cud loose the match in the first 2 sessions. If england score 270 plus then Pak wud be under pressure when batting. That is why its important for pakistan to have a top first session. Nip out around 3/4 keeping scoring rate down and take it from ther in second session. Realistically now that England are batting first Pakistan need to bowl them out below 250 to have a good chance.

This stadium is far away from city and in the middle of no where. It takes 30 mins by bus from Southampton Airport Parkway station to reach the stadium. Expect the wind to be much heavier considering the deserted location.

Boys don't seem up for it, let's hope it's just early jitters and they are full switched on, and they don't drop any dollies.

That’s my whole point!

Pakistan has Azhar, Fawad and Shafiq who are no longer even County Championship quality. While Shan Masood is the same level as these two or Elgar as a mediocre, average Test opener.

But without Stokes the England batting is wafer thin too.

The difference is that England are picking their best team (minus Stokes) while Misbah is not picking his best team, but rather his ageing mates combined with kids.
