"Have England lost - or have they ever had - the ability to blow tails away? 160 odd for 6 should be 190 all out, but SA could end up getting 250 which they will feel (from 64 for 4) pretty good about." Spot on their Chalky...like I said, SA have avoided being blown away and have something to bowl at...

Not enough credit given to Vernon. He's a pretty capable bat for a bowler - FC ave of 25 and 2 100s.

It looks like SA would get to 250-275 which will be a good total to defend against a KP less England. Philander and Steyn will be tough to handle in these conditions.

Not sure 275 will be a good score, get the feeling this pitch will be a lot flatter days two and three.

375 might be closer to par.

But judging how England have batted this series on flatter wickets. Anything close to 300 looks good. You should also factor in the fact that Pieterson isn't playing this game and they have two inexperience players in the middle order. so if the top 3 go early, England will face an uphill battle to stay on par.

I feel that its going to be tough for England to force a win here , unless cloud cover remains.

New ball taken! England needs to take wicket NOW! 50 more runs and SA are ahead in this match.

Imagine how much criticism MSD would have gotten if he was captaining. In 2nd test same thing happened Broad/Swann and Prior turned it around for England and then we collapsed

So many stupid shots by SA. Very shoddy batting. They have themselves to blame.

In other news, Onions took 9 wickets and a run out against Notts just now. Will he put pressure on Finn and Bresnan for selection? I think he did.

Where is Matty Hayden when you need him? Distractions at sight screen! Floodlights problem at home of cricket? Third World problem anyone?

England's day surely for me. Because if Sun shine comes tomorrow for England, batting should be easier.

Although, pissed of Steyn can really do damage in any condition.

Despite bad luck, Saffer's day for me. 262 is very good in these conditions and Philander's still there. If they add another 40-50, I see a collapse

No sun tomorrow. cloudy day mostly.

Sun is coming out on Sunday. Maybe Smith knew what he was doing at the toss.

England are definitely on top.

England win I think :).

Just saw that Onions took 9 for 67, with the other wicket being a runout by him. Should they have chosen him?

SA looking set for a 300+ score. The pitch is pretty good for batting though and England should at the very least match this score.

Very surprised SA has managed to get to 260 odd, If they can add 60-70 runs they will be back in game big style.

Maybe. Finn is in because he is on his home ground. Broad got a 5fer last match so he stays.

I think both England opening bowlers look tired after Pakistan, SL and the long English season so maybe they could have played Onions and rested Jimmy. Yet Jimmy is the attack leader so they will be loath to drop him.

You really can't drop Jimmy. The moment they did, the Windies ran amok. He's too vital as a leader and a sort of bowling captain. They should have played Onions ahead of Finn though. Finn was decent today, but as ever, expensive and so on. Onions has been in magnificent form this season, and can't seem to break in.

Going to watch the highlights shortly but from the radio and reports a very interesting days cricket. England fighting hard to level the series and SA fighting back. Hope the weather stays good for 5 days, this could be a great test match.

300 will be a decent enough score ..

Really wanna see some imran tahir magical performance over here

Finn is an attacking bowler and will go for runs, but he'll pick up wickets. Barbie's 5fer in the last match was more a matter of circumstance than his own skill, due to SA going on the attack. I would have replaced Broad with Onions.

Do the English dare to pepper Steyn with short ones more......last evening's hit may have faded a bit from memory but anything fresh they try today morning might fire him up.

Will be fun to watch. Fired up Steyn is better than anything. The highlight of the last dozen or so tests I have seen is the Fired up KP vs Fired up Steyn.

Steyn would be just as fired up if they hit him 10 times or baked him cupcakes.

England have lost their opportunity to dominate the game but still a decent position for them I guess.

A display of prime Saffer bowling could however win the series for them this evening.

Agreed.

Onions has the same skill of picking up wickets combined with Bresnan's skill of not giving runs

And I believe one of Finn's wickets was a piece of luck. Even if out, that wasn't the sort of delivery non-chokers would not hit for 4

World class bowling from England and only a thousand edges got SA up to 200. England reassert their authority at the top of the world rankings, and stir up more envy from fans of teams vanquished and whitewashed by England in the last three years.
Malakian, that you? :))) :))) :)))

Broad has looked really innocuous if you ask me, what happened to his speed? He was hitting 140 km/hr against Pakistan but is stuck in the 128-130 km/hr region for most parts of this series.

May be he's scared of KP, after that parody account was busted:)))

SA needs to bat through the 1st hour here.

Anything above 300 will be good.

England on the other hand need some help from the 3rd umpire:kami

i think if S.A get 300 here then they will be over the moon. England need some very quick wickets here!
