What a depressing game. Apparently -

England suck at bowling in tests without Anderson.
KP is rubbish.
Broad is a better batsman than bowler.
Finn is not yet a test-class bowler.
Sri Lanka have no test-class bowlers.
England can bat on flat wickets at home.
Dilshan can bat on flat wickets.
Sangakarra blows in English conditions and probably always will.

It's taught us absolutely nothing new.

Might as well call it a draw now and move on to the Rose Bowl.

play likely to start in an hour .... Agnew wrote in his article that time taken out of game strengthens lanka's position - cant figure that out either !!!
 
Anyone know if Onions is back, or is he still goiing through post injury rehab?

He ws quite nippy and looks to be a better prospect than Finn currently...
 
The attack without Anderson severely lacks a leader and a guy to hold the attack together. I haven't seen him bowl badly for England in test cricket for some time now. Even when he doesn't get his token 3-fer he keeps things tight and creates pressure. I think Tremlett and Finn can get to this stage as well, but they're nowhere near experienced enough at the moment. As for Broad, he's becoming a real worry. The only way I can see him going forward as an England player is as part of a five-man bowling attack...right now surely Bresnan is a better option in a quartet. Bresie is not as good a batsman but decent enough, and much more of a wicket-taker it seems. If Stuart doesn't turn this disastrous set of figures into a four or five haul today then he's struggling.

Broad needs to go, what a awful bowler! If he spent more time trying to bowl well instead of his melodromatics he would be a half decent bowler.
 
Not even melodramatics anymore, he's just poor.

even i think broad does lot of nautanki & can only be a good 5th bowling option in tests .

Sri Lanka need to get a lead here and quickly. These two have right Idea about attacking!
 
At least it probably won't be that much of a lead. We should be able to get out of this one.

I tell you Whippy, this must surely be Shahzad's opening. Barbie has to quit combing his locks and begin to set his eye to a consistent line and pitch it fuller. Horrid stuff.
 
Broad needs a few cheap Tail-end wickets here like the last test to make his figures look haf-decent.
 
Finn doesnt look all that good but he has the knack of taking important wickets. Will become a good bowler. Broad is an average player so far in his career. Nothing extraordinary about him.
 
56 runs from 70 balls... good solid fast scoring partnership.

Bresnan is injured which is a shame, but it does bring the tidy Shahzad into the picture. I would go into the final test with Anderson, Tremlett, Shahzad and Swann. Whether or not the England selectors have the bottle to ditch Broad and Finn after the same test match remains to be seen.

One of them will have to go to accommodate Anderson, and at the moment it would have to be Broad. We have a strong top seven so no worries about the longish tail.

I still think they'll ditch Finn for Anderson though. They're determined for Broad to be test-class but for now it just isn't working. You know, he's only 24. He can still come back and be very strong.

Some good spin in this pitch only herath can exploit it. Dilshan ain't a good spinner if we could get some quick wickets . Can put some pressure

Better than Broad who bowls 100% crap and occasionally gets a wicket with it.

Broad has to go.

Gosh, I swear that if Finn here obtains himself a fiver, it"s true that giraffes get all the fruit. Credit to him, I suppose. Besides that, I believe that adding Shahzad as a quickfire option lends the attack an added dimension and pliability. I would have chanced my odds on Onions, but I believe he would have to get better room and time to integrate himself perhaps, as well that he's a primarily line-and-length, pitching it back of a length. England could bear benefits with a bowler with greater mongrel. One that aims for the stumps. On that point, though, I do wonder of the whereabouts of the famed english rendition of reverse swing, whippy?

Onions is a'ight but he's probably still getting back to full fitness.

If Finn keeps taking all these wickets then there's not a lot we can say. He just always takes bloody wickets. I don't know how he does it. He's got to be ahead of Broad right now surely. Even the England selection panel can't deny that.

England left their reverse in Sydney, when Anderson and Bresnan were getting banana swing after 20 overs. We can bowl out Sri Lanka without swing but we need these guys back for the India series.
