<b>Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham</b>

Goals:
Ziyech (47' minutes), Thiago Silva (55' minutes)

Assists:
Hudson-Odoi (47' minutes), Mount (55' minutes)

<b>Two second-half goals, including a brilliant strike from Hakim Ziyech, helped Chelsea beat Tottenham for the third time in three weeks.</b>

After a goalless first half, Ziyech scored within two minutes of the restart, superbly curling the ball into the top corner from 20 yards after a fine run from Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The hosts doubled their lead eight minutes later when defender Thiago Silva headed in from Mason Mount's excellent free-kick delivery.

In the first half, Tottenham thought they had taken the lead as Harry Kane slotted past Kepa Arrizabalaga, but the goal was ruled out as the England striker was adjudged to have pushed Silva to the ground.

This victory follows Chelsea's wins in both legs of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Spurs, cruising through 3-0 on aggregate to set up a Wembley final against Liverpool.

It is Tottenham's first defeat in the league since Antonio Conte, a Premier League and FA Cup winner while in charge of Chelsea, replaced the sacked Nuno Espirito Santo in November.

For Chelsea this was a welcome return to winning ways in the league.

They were top of the Premier League after a 2-1 win at Watford on 1 December but a run of only 11 points from their next nine games has severely damaged their hopes of becoming English champions for the first time since Conte guided them to the title in 2016-17.

They remain third and are 10 points behind leaders Manchester City, although Thomas Tuchel's side will not play in the league again until 19 February as a result of their participation in the Fifa Club World Cup, following their Champions League success.

Conte opted for a back four, the first time he has done so in a league game at Tottenham, as he looked to keep it tight and hit his former team on the counter attack.

But the hosts nearly broke through inside the opening minute when Romelu Lukaku shot over on the turn, before Chelsea failed to convert further chances through Hudson-Odoi, Silva and Ziyech.

Lukaku, who has only scored eight times in 24 appearances in all competitions following a £97.5m move from Inter Milan last summer, had another glorious chance following good work by Mount, but missed the ball when eight yards out.

While Conte was unhappy with the officials for ruling out Spurs' first-half goal, Tuchel was also furious that Japhet Tanganga, who had already been booked, was not shown a second yellow card when he had a hold of Hudson-Odoi's shirt late in the first half.

It was the second time Chelsea thought their opponents should have had a player sent off after Matt Doherty had earlier caught Malang Sarr by standing on his ankle - but a video assistant referee check decided it had been accidental.

However seventh-placed Tottenham, who would have moved into the top four with a win, saw their resistance broken early in the second half thanks to Ziyech's wonder strike, before Silva's goal took the game beyond them.

Chelsea could have won by a bigger margin as Lukaku, Mount and Cesar Azpilicueta missed chances.

Tottenham scored two injury-time goals in their last match to come from behind and beat Leicester 3-2 in a remarkable match on Wednesday but there was to be no dramatic repeat at Stamford Bridge.

Arrizabalaga did well to keep out Kane's powerful header late on as Chelsea maintained their clean sheet for their first Premier League win in three matches.

The number of positive Covid-19 cases in the Premier League has fallen for the fourth week in a row.

In the seven days up to and including Sunday 23 January, there were 16 new positive cases among players and staff, from 6,221 tests.

It is the lowest number of positives in a week since 5 December.

There were 94 new cases in the week up to 2 January, 72 in the week up to 9 January and 33 in the same time frame up to 16 January.

The Premier League said between Monday 17 January and Thursday 20 January, 4,131 tests were administered. Of these, there were 14 new positive tests.

Between Friday 21 January and Sunday 23 January, a further 2,090 tests were administered. Of these, there were two new positive tests.

A Premier League statement said: "The safety of everyone remains a priority and the Premier League is taking all precautionary steps in response to the impact of the Omicron variant.

"The league has reverted to its emergency measures, and has increased testing of players and club staff."

There have been no games called off in English football's top-flight since the Premier League granted Arsenal's request to postpone the north London derby with Tottenham, which was scheduled to take place on 16 January.

Watford have sacked Claudio Ranieri

Watford are set to appoint former England boss Roy Hodgson as their new manager.

The Hornets are keen to make a swift appointment following Claudio Ranieri's dismissal on Monday with the club in the Premier League's bottom three.

Hodgson, 74, has been out of the game since leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

At the time, he said he wanted to take a break from the game but did not rule out a return at some point.

Watford want to give Ranieri's replacement as much time as possible to work with the team before a crucial Premier League trip to fellow strugglers Burnley on 5 February.

The Pozzo family own the Vicarage Road side and Hodgson worked for them when he had a brief spell in charge of Udinese.

Hodgson is the oldest man to manage in the Premier League and had been in charge at Palace from September 2017 until his departure.

He replaced Frank de Boer as manager with the Eagles bottom of the Premier League after they had lost their first four matches of the 2017-18 season without scoring a goal.

Despite losing his first three games in charge, he guided Palace to 11th in the table, while they finished 12th, 14th and 14th in subsequent seasons.

Watford have appointed former England boss Roy Hodgson as their new manager on a deal until the end of the season.

Hodgson replaces Claudio Ranieri, who was sacked on Monday after three-and-a-half months in charge, with Watford 19th in the table, two points from safety.

The Englishman has been out of work since leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season.

All parties will assess Hodgson's future at Watford at the end of the current campaign.

Premier League clubs will have to prove they have at least four Covid-19 cases to get matches called off under new guidance announced on Wednesday.

A total of 22 top-flight games were postponed in December and January because of the pandemic.

The rules will be introduced before the next league fixture on 5 February.

A Premier League statement said the rules are designed "to protect the wellbeing of players and staff" and "maintain the sporting integrity".

Previously, clubs could request a match to be postponed if they did not have 13 available players as well as a goalkeeper.

However, teams were claiming opponents were including injured players as well as those on Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) duty in Cameroon in the figures of players available.

Earlier this month, Tottenham said they were "extremely surprised" at the decision to call off their game against Arsenal, which had been scheduled to take place on 16 January.

However, the Gunners, who had four players at the Afcon tournament as well as a number of injuries and Covid cases, said they "reluctantly" requested a postponement and were "disappointed" the game had to be rearranged.

The Premier League said requests for postponements would continue to be assessed on "a case-by-case basis" and added: "Throughout the pandemic, the Premier League has adapted its guidance in response to the wider public health situation.

"The guidance was last updated in December in response to the emergence of the Omicron variant.

"The Premier League Board examines a number of factors, including the ability of a club to field a team; the status, severity and potential impact of Covid-19; and the ability of the players to safely prepare for and play the match."

Covid passes not needed for stadium entry, but face masks still recommended

The league have said Covid passes will no longer be needed as a condition of entry to a Premier League match.

However, clubs have been urged to "follow public health guidance to keep each other safe on a matchday" and supporters should wear face masks when "indoors or in crowded areas" of the stadium.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said: "Fans have shown fantastic support for the measures in place and we thank them for helping keep each other safe and grounds open at full capacity.

"Despite Government restrictions easing, everyone still has a role to play in making sure people feel safe at our matches.

"We and our clubs urge supporters to continue to do all they can to follow public health guidance to minimise the risk of passing on Covid-19."

Good change.

<u>Burnley 0-0 Watford</u>

<b>Roy Hodgson secured a point in his first game as Watford manager but his new side remain the relegation zone after a goalless draw at bottom side Burnley.</b>

The visitors came closest to breaking the deadlock just before half-time, when Clarets skipper Ben Mee almost turned the ball into his own net from a corner.

Burnley's best chances came after the break, when Maxwel Cornet forced a decent save out of Ben Foster with a curling shot and £12m new-boy Wout Weghorst fired wide after being set-up by James Tarkowski.

But, in their first home game since the middle of December and only their 19th game of the season - the latest any side has reached the halfway point of a Premier League campaign - Sean Dyche's Burnley still lack conviction around the penalty area and have recorded a solitary win all season.

They are now three points behind fourth-bottom Norwich, albeit with three games in hand, and boos accompanied the final whistle.

Watford are two points better off from two extra games and Hodgson can take comfort from the clean sheet, his side's first in 31 Premier League matches.

Manchester United tumbled out of the Premier League's top four as Jay Rodriguez's first goal in 50 league games earned bottom club Burnley a precious point at Turf Moor.

Newcastle moved out of the bottom three with a huge win over fellow strugglers Everton in Frank Lampard's first Premier League game in charge of the Toffees.

West Ham climbed back into the Premier League's top four with a narrow victory over Roy Hodgson's Watford, as Kurt Zouma controversially started for the home side.

Ralph Hasenhuttl says Southampton produced the best performance of his tenure as they fought back to beat Tottenham 3-2 and damage the hosts' bid for a Champions League spot.

Pep Guardiola said Manchester City "are not the best in the world" despite them extending their lead at the top of the Premier League to 12 points following a 2-0 victory over Brentford.

Jacob Ramsey, Philippe Coutinho and Daniel James staged a three-way tussle for man of the match in a rollercoaster encounter that saw Aston Villa and Leeds share six goals in one of the Premier League games of the season.

Wilfried Zaha scored and then missed with a terrible penalty as Crystal Palace held Norwich 1-1 to keep the Canaries in the relegation zone.

Kurt Zouma: West Ham boss David Moyes says defender available for Leicester City game

West Ham boss David Moyes says Kurt Zouma is available for Sunday's game at Leicester amid the controversy of the defender being filmed kicking his cat.

Animal charity the RSPCA has taken the 27-year-old's two cats off him as they investigate the incident.

Moyes was criticised for picking Zouma against Watford on Tuesday after the video of the defender emerged.

"There are different views whether he should be available. We decided he should. I stand by that," said Moyes.

Zouma has been fined the maximum amount possible by the Hammers, with the fee being donated to animal welfare charities.

"I don't think a club could have taken more action any quicker than what they've done at the moment. West Ham have done a really good job," added Moyes.

"I'm not condoning him, his actions were terrible. They were diabolical but we've chosen to play him and we stand by that.

"We will get him some help. We are trying to do as much as we can as a club, as a team, to help him.

"Like people who maybe have drink-driving offences, most of them have to go to classes to learn the reasons and the damage that can be done.

"I think RSPCA are going to provide us some courses for Kurt to understand about animals and how to treat them.

"He's incredibly remorseful. Like everybody else, in life sometimes you need a bit of forgiveness. He's hoping he is forgiven for a bad action."

The video also showed Zouma slapping his cat and was reportedly filmed by his brother Yoan.

Yoan is at Dagenham & Redbridge, who have said he will not play for the club until the conclusion of an RSPCA investigation.

The fall-out from the incident has resulted in German sportswear firm Adidas ending its deal with the Hammers player.

West Ham sponsor Experience Kissimmee has also ended its deal with the club, while another one of the London outfit's sponsors, Vitality, has suspended its contract with the Premier League side.

Manchester United had to settle for another 1-1 draw after being left frustrated by an impressive Southampton in the Premier League.

Ralf Rangnick's men are getting used to that scoreline, which has now cropped up in three successive games - leading to a penalty shootout defeat by Middlesbrough in the FA Cup and a league draw at Burnley.

United had taken a first-half lead against the Saints - as they did against Burnley and Boro - but once again conceded a second-half equaliser and could not find a winning goal.

The hosts went ahead after 21 minutes as Marcus Rashford escaped in behind the Saints defence and played the ball off for Jadon Sancho to convert an easy finish.

Paul Pogba tapped home on the stroke of half-time but the goal was disallowed as Cristiano Ronaldo had strayed offside - and the Portuguese forward later had a header chalked off.

United were unable to press home their superiority and were made to pay at the start of the second half as Che Adams stayed onside to slot a finish into the far corner via the foot of the post.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's men, humiliated 9-0 on their previous visit to Old Trafford last February, were on top for long periods thereafter and may have pulled off a victory.

On-loan Armando Broja saw a drive pushed away by David de Gea, who was kept busy, while Stuart Armstrong blazed wildly over from a promising position.

The draw meant United were unable to move into the top four, while Southampton - who have now lost just once in 10 matches in all competitions - stay in 10th place.

United interim boss Rangnick spoke before the game about the "obvious" need for the club to bring in a new striker this coming summer and the evidence for that is clear following another misfiring performance.

Star man Ronaldo is the top scorer with 14 goals this season but has hit a barren run of six games without finding the net, his longest period without scoring in 11 years.

Seemingly lacking in confidence, the Portuguese was outmuscled and outfought by the Southampton centre-backs and when he did have a presentable opportunity in the first six minutes, he went round goalkeeper Fraser Forster - only to scuff a shot that was cleared off the line by Romain Perraud.

Forster could do little about Sancho's finish as Rashford played the ball across perfectly for his England team-mate, but did manage to keep out a clipped effort from the ex-Borussia Dortmund player.

United could have won it in injury time but the visiting goalkeeper made a stunning save low down to his left to deny Harry Maguire's header.

At the other end, January's Premier League player of the month De Gea was providing the heroics for his side again, showing good handling to smother Armstrong's acrobatic volley and Perraud's low curler.

Adams deservedly netted by sliding home a cool finish on 47 minutes - meaning he has now scored in back-to-back games - and Southampton had the United backline rattled in the second half.

Albania international Broja was proving a nuisance for the out-of-form Maguire and should have done better when he was one-on-one with De Gea, dinking a shot wide.

Ultimately, the south coast side claimed a point, backing up Wednesday's impressive comeback victory at Tottenham and remain unbeaten in Manchester this season.

Everton should get out of trouble today.

With that the relegation spots getting sorted out with Norwich, Watford and Burnley occupying them

<b>Roy Hodgson says his Watford side "will need a lot of mental strength" to secure Premier League survival this season after Brighton inflicted further misery on the relegation-threatened Hornets at Vicarage Road.</b>

Hodgson is yet to see his side score a goal since taking charge three games ago and the club remain second bottom of the Premier League, three points from safety having not won since November.

Watford's struggles in front of goal continued on Saturday despite Emmanuel Dennis proving a threat, striking the crossbar after a neat solo run in the second half.

"The only people who will get us out of this are the players," Hodgson told BBC Match of the Day.

Asked whether his record of never having been relegated from the top flight could aid the Hornets' survival bid, Hodgson said: "It puts me in good stead going forward, but I need a group of players with the same resilience and ability to get over disappointments."

Striker Neal Maupay looped a superb half-volley into the top corner from Tariq Lamptey's low cross moments before the break to open the scoring for Brighton.

The visitors always looked more likely to double their lead and they did so eight minutes from time when Adam Webster bundled in from a corner.

"In the first half we didn't play anywhere near as well as I was expecting," added Hodgson. "We were better at the start of the second half but still without creating the threat or goal chances we needed.

"The game gets put to bed with a scrambled goal from a corner. We were hoping for a lot and to start a revival, so now we go to the next game and hope we can start it then."

Graham Potter's Brighton remain ninth and on a seven-match unbeaten run in the top flight that has seen them edge towards the European spots.

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick says his side are struggling to "keep their composure" for more than half a hour after a third successive 1-1 draw.

Manager Frank Lampard described Everton's performance as "special" as he claimed his first Premier League win with his new club in a dominant victory against Leeds United.

Raheem Sterling scored a hat-trick as Manchester City increased their lead at the top of the Premier League to 12 points with a victory that keeps Norwich in the relegation zone.

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira says talent alone "is not going to be enough" for his side after Saturday's goalless draw with Brentford left them still searching for their first Premier League win of 2022.

Craig Dawson's injury-time header earned West Ham United a crucial point in the fight to finish in the top four just as Leicester City looked set to put their recent struggles behind them.

The first serious questions were being asked about manager Brendan Rodgers after the FA Cup fourth-round thrashing at Nottingham Forest was followed by defeat at Liverpool.

The Foxes made a slow start and were punished by Jarrod Bowen's 10th-minute strike. But they were gifted a lifeline right on half-time when Aaron Cresswell needlessly handled James Maddison's corner, Youri Tielemans drilling home the penalty.

Leicester were galvanised and further rewarded for their improvement when Ricardo Pereira headed home a Harvey Barnes cross after 57 minutes.

West Ham, who were without controversial defender Kurt Zouma after he felt unwell in the warm-up, had lost their way, but rescued the draw that keeps them a point ahead of Manchester United in fourth. Dawson rose highest to meet a Bowen corner and score with a looping header.

Leicester miss big chance

The fragile state of affairs at Leicester was illustrated by the sound of groans and jeers as they passed the ball around at the back after West Ham took an early lead.

Frustration was in the air and returned at the final whistle when the Foxes lost the advantage late on, for the third time recently after losing to Tottenham and drawing with Brighton.

It was a desperate body blow for Rodgers and his players who looked like stepping out of their malaise as they were moments away from coming from behind to win.

The pain was etched on faces all around the King Power Stadium as this was a movie they have seen before.

Leicester have a soft centre without key defenders Jonny Evans and Wesley Fofana.

It was exposed by Issa Diop's pass for Bowen's goal and then again in stoppage time, even after Rodgers had sent on the giant figure of Jannik Vestergaard late on, presumably to guard against such an eventuality as Dawson's goal.

So near and yet so far for The Foxes. Again.

Raul Jimenez says Wolverhampton Wanderers are "dreaming big" after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 to move above them in the table and inflict a third successive Premier League defeat on Antonio Conte's side.

Newcastle United moved four points clear of the Premier League relegation zone with a third straight win as Kieran Trippier's free-kick sank Aston Villa at St James' Park.

Manager Jurgen Klopp was pleased to see his side overcome testing conditions and difficult opponents as Liverpool won 1-0 at bottom-of-the-table Burnley to record a fourth consecutive Premier League victory.

Cristiano Ronaldo ended his six-game goal drought in sensational style as Manchester United beat 10-man Brighton at Old Trafford to move back into the Premier League's top-four.

Bruno Fernandes added a second as United broke from deep inside their own half in the final minute of injury-time.

After a tepid opening period, Ronaldo struck six minutes into the second half.

The Portuguese collected Scott McTominay's pass before edging right of the Brighton defence and, with barely any backlift, sent a low shot curling beyond a static Robert Sanchez.

Three minutes later, Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk was sent off after VAR sent referee Peter Bankes to review the defender's foul on Anthony Elanga.

Fernandes wasted a glorious chance when he failed to get past Sanchez with only the Brighton keeper to beat, before Ronaldo nodded an excellent chance wide of the far post.

It meant United breathed a sigh of relief when Jakub Moder's speculative effort from the corner of the box bounced back off the bar with David de Gea beaten.

Brighton were still trying to salvage something from the contest when Fernandes struck with virtually the final kick.

Jekyll and Hyde United
In his pre-match interviews, United's interim manager Ralf Rangnick spoke about his team needing to be more Dr Jekyll and less Mr Hyde. Sadly for the German, the first half had far more evidence of the latter, evil, side.

When United were pressed with any great intensity, they gave the ball away. Restored to the starting line-up ahead of Paul Pogba, Fred was one culprit when he delivered a straight pass intended for Ronaldo straight to Adam Webster, who was not much more than a couple of yards away.

But the Brazilian was not on his own. Indeed, as Ronaldo drove a free-kick in a promising situation at the end of that disappointing opening period into the wall, it was hard to think of a redeeming feature for the hosts.

They did create one decent chance, when Ronaldo's backheel sent Jadon Sancho running into the box. But once Brighton keeper Sanchez had turned the England man's shot away, the best bit of United play was De Gea's excellent save to deny Moder's header.

The boos that accompanied the half-time whistle were predictable and when Pogba emerged late after the break and missed the start of his warm-up, it appeared United's shambolic evening would continue.

Instead, the Frenchman was on the touchline to join the applause as Ronaldo struck the decisive 51st-minute opener.

Ronaldo knew he should have had more goals, though, and kicked an advertising hoarding in frustration as a header from a corner went narrowly wide.

However, after an unsatisfactory period for both player and team as leads have been lost in three successive games, at least this time they were able to secure a much-needed victory.

Familiar losing feeling in Manchester for Brighton
Given they have now drawn two and lost 12 in 14 away games at Manchester United - and not won in 20 trips to face either City or United - the final outcome cannot have been a surprise to Brighton.

Yet, despite the scoreline and losing centre-back Dunk, there had to be an element of this being a missed opportunity for the visitors.

For long periods in the first half, they were by far the better side but, not for the first time, the lack of a potent finisher cost Graham Potter's men.

Moder could not have done much more with the header that De Gea turned away, nor the shot that hit the bar.

But Yves Bissouma fired wide before the break when placed to do much better. Danny Welbeck then came agonisingly close to snatching a draw against his former club when he sent his header over from eight yards after being picked out by fellow substitute Tariq Lamptey in the final minute.

<b>Wolves 2-1 Leicester</b>

Wolves maintained their push for a European place as excellent goals from Ruben Neves and Daniel Podence proved enough to beat Leicester in a thrilling Midlands derby at Molineux.

Mohamed Salah (160) has broken Didier Drogba's record (159) of the most goal contributions by an African player in the history of the Premier League. He also now has the highest goal ratio per game than any other Liverpool player in history.

The 6-0 win means Liverpool have a superior goal difference to Man City, who they're due to meet on 9 April at the Etihad.

What a forward line we have in Salah, Diaz, Mane and the currently injured Jota and Firmino. Even Origi isn't that bad either. We brushed Leeds aside as if they were invisible when in reality they are not a bad side at all. I love our pressing game then attacking the opposition with all our force. Liverpool are a joy to watch:haider

Despite top 3 topscorers from Liverpool, they're still 3 points behind City, they still have to face City at the Ettihad. So I don't know what you're celebrating. Maybe you're just content with 2nd place finish.

I am celebrating the thrashing of Leeds. I am also celebrating us being the only challengers to City despite having a much lesser budget. Also happy to see Liverpool are still in all competitions. Some two weeks back we were 12 points behind or something that has been reduced to only three. We also have a better goal difference then City as well. There is plenty for Liverpool FC fans to celebrate.

An own goal from Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa helped Arsenal complete a dramatic late turnaround in their pursuit of a top-four Premier League place.

For long periods Hwang Hee-chan's early effort had looked like being decisive for the visitors.

However, Arsenal substitute Nicolas Pepe levelled from Eddie Nketiah's pass towards the end of a dominant second period in which the hosts had continually pressed for an equaliser.

And as the clock ran down Alexandre Lacazette's effort was inadvertently touched into his own goal by Sa to spark wild celebrations inside the Emirates stadium.

The result sees Mikel Arteta's side move up to fifth in the table, just one point behind fourth-placed Manchester United, with two games in hand, while Wolves who were hoping to further their own Champions League ambitions sit in seventh.

Spurs has a history of defeating City while on the other hand Liverpool doesn't, especially at Etihad. I guess the last time Liverpool won a league match at Etihad was in 2015. Believe me, as a neutral fan I want Liverpool to win the league again but realistically the chances don't look that great for Liverpool.

History is their to be rewritten. Just coz it has not happened much before does not mean it won't do so this season. I think at this point it is 55%/45% in favour of Man City. Still plenty of twists and turns before the season is over.

The interesting thing is that the title race could now technically be viewed as resting in Liverpool’s hands.

If Liverpool beat City at the Etihad and win all their other games as well, then Liverpool with their already superior goal difference to City will likely win the title.

I can’t see either side dropping many points at all now — they are playing on a different plane of existence to the other 18 teams in the league — so the Etihad fixture is hugely significant.

Che Adams scores for Southampton
Four of Che Adams' seven Premier League goals this term have come against the three promoted sides
Southampton edged closer to the European places with a comfortable Premier League win over relegation-threatened Norwich at St Mary's.

Che Adams scored the opening goal of the game for the hosts, flicking the ball past Canaries goalkeeper Angus Gunn after Tino Livramento's cross had ricocheted around the six-yard box.

Oriol Romeu's sublime late volley wrapped up the points for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.

The result sees Southampton move up to ninth in the table, while Norwich remain bottom five points from safety, having played at least one game more than any of the five sides directly above them.

But for some errant finishing - and the performance of Gunn against his former employers - Saints' margin of victory would have been greater.

While they let a one-goal lead slip to lose the reverse fixture between the sides, the hosts rarely looked like relinquishing control on this occasion with the scoreline not a true reflection of their total dominance.

Mohamed Elyounoussi and Kyle Walker-Peters both had powerful efforts saved by Gunn, while Adams headed wide when well placed from a James Ward-Prowse corner.

Abject Norwich slip to another defeat

Norwich had appeared to turn a corner with positive results against Everton, Watford and Crystal Palace.

However, they have now slipped to three consecutive defeats and shipped nine goals in the process.

But unlike their heavier losses to Manchester City and Liverpool, where they acquitted themselves well at times, this was an abject display.

With 30 minutes on the clock Dean Smith's side had barely stepped foot out of their own half as they allowed Southampton to play around them, cross and shoot seemingly at will.

And while Josh Sargent had arguably the best chance in that period, seeing his shot blocked following good play by Teemu Pukki, they had to wait until the 73rd minute before Grant Hanley finally registered an effort on target.

By then Southampton's pressure had told with Adams' 36th-minute opener - and the Canaries could have few complaints when Romeu lashed in from 18 yards with two minutes remaining.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte says Saturday's emphatic win at Leeds "has to be a starting point" for his side as they inflicted another damaging blow to Leeds' hopes of staving off Premier League relegation.

Spurs broke the deadlock after just ten minutes when Ryan Sessegnon broke clear down the left and delivered a perfectly weighted cross for Matt Doherty to sweep home.

Dejan Kulusevski drilled in the visitors' second before Harry Kane's composed finish made it 3-0 on the half-hour mark.

Son Heung-min compounded Leeds' misery in the second half when he latched on to Kane's ball over the top of the home defence and beat Illan Meslier with a smart finish.

"I have seen a desire and a will to fight in every moment of the game," said Conte, who had questioned his future following Wednesday's defeat by Burnley.

The Italian told BBC Match of the Day: "They fought during the game and it was good for me to see this.

"If we want to be competitive, try to improve and build something important, it is not enough to play football and enjoy football. You have to win, and to win you need to match good football with a great desire."

"We had to put great desire and determination into every game from the start until the end, and today we saw this. My teams are not soft. My teams need to be strong."

Robin Koch and Raphinha struck the woodwork for Leeds and Stuart Dallas should have scored a consolation prior to Spurs' fourth, but the hosts rarely looked capable of forging a route back into the game as Spurs continued to carve out opportunities on the counter-attack.

The result lifts Tottenham to within four points of fourth-placed Manchester United, while Leeds remain three points above the bottom three. They could drop into the relegation zone if other results go against them on Saturday.

<b>Everton 0-1 Manchester City</b>

Phil Foden's late winner restored Manchester City's six-point lead at the top of the Premier League, but Everton were denied a penalty in a controversial finale at Goodison Park.

It looked like the defending champions would drop points for a second successive week until some awful defending let Foden in to score from close range with eight minutes to go.

There was more drama when City midfielder Rodri appeared to handle a dropping ball inside his area, but the home side were not given the chance to equalise from the spot after a VAR check.

That decision brought disbelief from Toffees fans inside Goodison, particularly those in the Gwladys Street End who were closest to the incident, and referee Paul Tierney was booed off at the final whistle.

It was a thrilling conclusion to an enthralling match, which had seen Everton take the game to City in the first half before Pep Guardiola's side imposed themselves after the break.

Jordan Pickford made a succession of saves to keep City at bay, notably a double stop to deny Kevin de Bruyne and Bernardo Silva in quick succession, but he was ultimately undone by his own team-mates.

Mason Holgate's attempt to block Bernardo Silva's cross only succeeded in wrong-footing Michael Keane, allowing Foden to nip in and round Pickford to score.

Everton played well and should have had a late penalty.

City got lucky.

But they ground out another win and all that matters in the end is the result.

With defending like that Everton deserved to lose. Was a stone wall penalty as well, don't know why it wasn't given.

West Ham claimed a valuable Premier League victory over Wolves to reignite their pursuit of a top-four finish.

Tomas Soucek celebrated his 27th birthday by scoring the only goal of the game for the Hammers, with the Czech Republic international poking home from Michail Antonio's pass.

The result moves West Ham up to fifth in the table, above Arsenal on goal difference and two points behind Manchester United in fourth - however the Gunners have three games in hand on both.

Consecutive draws had seen David Moyes' side lose ground near the top of the table but they created several excellent chances to score and deserved their win over opponents who also have European aspirations.

Aaron Cresswell and Declan Rice both went close to opening the scoring for the hosts, with England midfielder Rice curling a superb 20-yard effort against the right-hand post.

Jarrod Bowen, Soucek and Pablo Fornals all had opportunities to double their advantage and ensure a more comfortable conclusion for the hosts who were forced to withstand some late pressure from Wolves, who stay eighth.

Bruno Lage's team struggled for fluency after he made five changes to the side that started Thursday's defeat at Arsenal.

And while they improved after the break, the second-half introductions of Raul Jimenez, Daniel Podence and Pedro Neto were unable to make a difference to the outcome.

Before kick-off West Ham captain Rice held up a shirt with team-mate Andriy Yarmolenko's name and number on the back as the sides lined up to express their support for the Ukrainian and his homeland which is still under attack by Russia.

China to block broadcast of Premier League matches this weekend over displays of Ukraine support

Reports are emerging that China will block the broadcast of all Premier League matches this weekend due to various planned displays of support for Ukraine.

China are key allies of Russia, and the country's response to the invasion is being closely watched by observers who hope leader Xi Jinping may use his influence to help deescalate the conflict.

Sadio Mane's first-half goal was enough to give Liverpool a 1-0 victory over West Ham at Anfield and move them back within three points of Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said Philippe Coutinho was "right up there with his Liverpool form of old" as his side produced a magnificent display to win consecutive Premier League games for the first time since November and end Southampton's six-match unbeaten run.

Four goals in 22 second-half minutes helped Chelsea cruise to victory in their first Premier League game since owner Roman Abramovich said he will sell the club.

Wolves' European hopes suffered a further blow as they slipped to a third successive Premier League defeat against an impressive Crystal Palace at Molineux.

Newcastle scored twice in two minutes to extend their unbeaten run to eight games with a cagey 2-1 win over Brighton.

Jesse Marsch's first game as Leeds boss ended in 1-0 defeat as Harvey Barnes scored the only goal to give Leicester their second Premier League win of the week.

Bit of a struggle today by the mighty Liverpool getting a bit lucky to end up with a win. West Ham should have got at at least a point in this one, they had many chances to score that went to waste. I feel that Liverpool will eventually have an off day too when they lose good and proper. Hopefully that will not be on Tuesday in the UCL match. Now here's hoping Man Utd can take a few points off Man City later on today. Fingers crescented:yk3

FULL-TIME
Watford 2-3 Arsenal

Four Premier League wins in a row for Arsenal. Eight Premier League home defeats in a row for Watford.

City thrash United out of Manchester. It is hard to believe how poor Man Utd have become not even being able to compete with City. Where as I did expect City to win it was natural to expect a much closer match. Utd have become a mid table side at best with under performing players who seem to lack any motivation above anything else. It appears that they will soon be looking for another manager with the current one whatever his name is looking like the next one to walk. It is like all the money they spend goes in to a dark hole. Rubbish team worse then what they were in the 1970's and 1980's.

Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham thrashed struggling Everton.

Toffees defender Michael Keane gave Spurs the lead when he steered Ryan Sessegnon's cross into his own net.

Son Heung-min doubled Tottenham's advantage three minutes later with a strike that went in under the body of England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Harry Kane sprinted clear and added a third, Sergio Reguilon converted Dejan Kulusevski's cross for the fourth before Kane volleyed in a fifth.

Kane goals were his 175th and 176th in the Premier League, taking him sixth in the competition's all-time list, above ex-Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.

Tottenham stay seventh, just three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal in the last of the Champions League qualifying spots.

Meanwhile, Everton, who have only won one of the five league matches since Frank Lampard took over at the end of January, are 17th, one point and one place above the relegation zone.

That was a serious whitewash of a match.

Spurs have had (and still have) their own problems, but they barely had to shift above third or fourth gear in order to give Everton a 5-0 whacking. It could have easily been 7 or 8.

Add in a very negative and poorly worded post-match interview from Lampard which didn’t suggest that he knows how to fix things, as well as a loyal but understandably unhappy and increasingly impatient fanbase, and you have a club which looks in deep trouble.
