Neal Maupay opened his account for Everton to earn their first Premier League win of the season with victory over West Ham at Goodison Park.

Maupay, who joined from Brighton for £15m in August, turned on Alex Iwobi's pass and smashed the ball past Lukasz Fabianksi as it sat up on the bounce.

The hosts had chances to extend their lead, with the impressive Demarai Gray having an effort saved by Fabianksi.

West Ham, whose tally of three goals is the joint fewest goals in the top flight, were toothless in attack.

Michail Antonio could only direct a header straight at Asmir Begovic, while Said Benrahma's effort came back off a post.

Everton climb to 13th in the table, while West Ham remain in the relegation zone in 18th.

After losing their opening two games, Everton are unbeaten in five league games, but victory was elusive before West Ham's arrival in Merseyside.

Everton started brightly and Gray provided a constant threat down the left, testing Fabianski thanks to a fierce effort with minimal backlift and often beating his man and flashing crosses across the box.

Everton have struggled in front of goal themselves - only West Ham and Wolves have managed fewer league goals this season - but Maupay, playing his second game, provided the cutting edge with an excellent finish.

West Ham had a quick turnaround following their Europa Conference League win at Danish side Silkeborg IF on Thursday, and their performance appeared lacklustre.

Although they 14 shots - double the number Everton managed - it was not until Maupay's goal that the Hammers seemed to spark into life.

Antonio should have done more with his header before Benrahma's effort caught Begovic and the Everton defence by surprise as it hit the woodwork.

Five league defeats from seven games will be a concern for West Ham manager David Moyes, whose side host fellow strugglers Wolves in their next match on 1 October.

Fans who take part in anti-social or criminal behaviour at Premier League grounds will now face a minimum one-year club ban.

Premier League clubs agreed to launch automatic bans alongside the English Football League in July in a bid to address fan behaviour issues.

They have now decided on a minimum one-year term at a meeting of Premier League shareholders.

The bans will take effect immediately and apply to both home and away games.

They will apply to "fans caught carrying or activating pyrotechnics or smoke bombs, or entering the pitch without permission".

"Clubs unanimously agreed to introduce minimum-length bans for supporters who take part in anti-social and criminal behaviours at league stadiums," read a statement from the Premier League following today's meeting.

"These bans could also be extended to accompanying parents or guardians of children who take part in such activities."

Tottenham defender Eric Dier told BBC Sport this week that he believed the problems of fan behaviour at Premier League grounds was getting worse.

The 28-year-old England international said he feels "too uncomfortable" for his family to attend away matches, despite recent measures taken by the Premier League, EFL and Football Association.

Action was taken in July following a number of high-profile incidents at the end of last season.

Aston Villa keeper Robin Olsen was assaulted at Manchester City on the final day of the Premier League campaign, while a Nottingham Forest fan was jailed for headbutting Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp at the end of their Championship play-off semi-final match last season.

As well as introducing automatic bans for fans, the FA also agreed tougher sanctions for clubs.

Those included working with clubs to improve searches of individuals and increasing the use of sniffer dogs at ground, while also working with social media platforms to quickly remove fan-generated videos of illegal behaviour.
 
Former England midfielder Fabian Delph has retired, just months after leaving Everton as a free agent.

Capped 20 times by his country, the 32-year-old made more than 200 appearances for Leeds United, Aston Villa, Manchester City and Everton.

He won the Premier League title twice with City, and reached the FA Cup and League Cup finals with Villa.

But his time at Everton was plagued by injuries, and he left the club when his contract expired in the summer.

Announcing his retirement on Instagram, Bradford-boen Delph said he had "nothing but happiness and gratitude for what this beautiful game has given me."

He added: "Massive shout out to my family, friends, players and staff from the amazing clubs I have been fortunate enough to represent as well as the support I have had from the fans."

Wolves have sacked manager Bruno Lage after 16 months in charge following Saturday's defeat by West Ham United left them in the bottom three.

Wolves have won just one and lost nine of their past 15 Premier League matches under the Portuguese.

Lage succeeded Nuno Espirito Santo last summer and led Wolves to a 10th-placed finish in his first season in charge.

However, his side have only scored three goals and picked up six points from eight games this season.

Wolves spent over £100m over the summer in an attempt to improve their tally of 38 Premier League goals last season.

They brought in Portuguese internationals Goncalo Guedes and Matheus Nunes, with the latter bought for a club record fee of £38m.

Lage also signed veteran forward Diego Costa, who had been a free agent for nine months and made his first competitive appearance since December 2021 against West Ham.

However, £15m summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic damaged knee ligaments days after his move from Stuttgart and key striker Raul Jimenez suffered knee and groin injuries in a pre-season friendly.

Wolves were booed by some fans following the defeat at London Stadium.

They are winless in eight Premier League away games - their worst top-flight run since 2011-12.

"The only thing I can say is that I'm sorry about the situation," Lage said in his final post-match news conference as manger.

"We've tried to solve these little problems we have and at the moment we aren't getting points or goals, but we are working hard for them."

Lage's replacement will be Wolves' third Premier League manager since Terry Connor in 2012.

Wolves are in next in action against Chelsea on 8 October.

Manchester City's Erling Haaland became the first player to score three successive Premier League home hat-tricks as Manchester United were humiliated in the derby at Etihad Stadium.

Haaland's rampage this season continued as he made it 17 goals in 10 games since his move from Borussia Dortmund and Phil Foden also scored his first treble for City as they closed the gap on pace-setters Arsenal to one point.

This was a brutal reality check for United after their recent improvement, as the reigning Premier League champions ran riot to illustrate the gulf in class between the teams.

City's lightning start was rewarded when Foden swept home Bernardo Silva's cross after eight minutes before Haaland inevitably joined the action with a header from a corner 11 minutes before half-time.

As United subsided, Haaland slid in a third from Kevin de Bruyne's perfect pass then turned provider to set up a simple finish for Foden before the break.

United's new signing Antony struck a superb goal from 25 yards to pull one back but it only provoked City to up the tempo again, Haaland thumping home his third from Sergio Gomez's cross then again showing he can be creator by setting up Foden for City's sixth.

Haaland's third put him in the record books following hat-tricks at home to Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace.

Anthony Martial's late goal for United was greeted in near silence, as was his added-time penalty, on a day of embarrassment for United and manager Erik ten Hag and one of elation for City and Pep Guardiola.

Leeds battled to earn a goalless draw with Aston Villa despite playing with only 10 men for the majority of the second half.

In a bad-tempered match, Colombia winger Luis Sinisterra was sent off after 48 minutes for two bookings - a foul on John McGinn and then blocking the ball when Douglas Luiz tried to take a quick free-kick.

Villa almost immediately took advantage of the extra player but Philippe Coutinho's volley bounced off the woodwork with England striker Ollie Watkins unable to convert the rebound.

The home side could have won it late on when substitute Patrick Bamford forced a fine save from Emiliano Martinez, with the Argentine also saving Brenden Aaronson's follow-up.

Gianluca Scamacca scored for a third successive game as West Ham came from behind to beat Fulham.

Fulham led after six minutes as Andreas Pereira fired in from a tight angle.

But Pereira then fouled Craig Dawson from a corner, Jarrod Bowen scoring the penalty.

Scamacca missed a series of good chances but netted when it counted as he lobbed Bernd Leno, before a defensive mix-up presented Michail Antonio with the third.

Fulham took the lead with the first major attack of the game - Kurt Zouma failed to close down Pereira on the left side of the West Ham box, and the Brazilian beat Łukasz Fabianski for power with his shot high into the net from a tight angle.

In an entertaining first half full of chances, Daniel James cracked the crossbar from 20 yards with a dipping left foot shot, before Scamacca missed a trio of opportunities to draw West Ham level.

The Hammers equalised instead from the penalty spot, with Pereira going from hero to villain as he barged Dawson to the floor from a corner. Bowen slotted the spot kick to Bernd Leno's right.

Scamacca missed another headed chance from six yards, however he finally found the net in superb fashion by chipping Leno, with the goal given after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) check.

He was replaced by Antonio with 10 minutes to go, and the sub finished the game in comical fashion - after his initial shot was saved by Leno, the German keeper and Tim Ream got in each other's way trying to clear, inadvertently presenting the striker with an open goal to finish.

Scattergun Scamacca finds the target
Having had to bide his time following his £32m move from Sassuolo in the summer, Scamacca now has six goals in 12 games for West Ham.

After netting against Wolves last weekend and the winner against Anderlecht on Thursday, the Italian was the Hammers' main man once again.

He could - perhaps should - have scored several more. On 16 minutes he headed down a driven Paqueta cross from eight yards while unmarked which, while Leno brilliantly scooped it out from near his boot, he should have guided further away from the keeper.

Before the 25th minute Scamacca had missed two more chances, dragging a one on one narrowly wide of the far post before sending another header straight at Leno.

Five minutes after the break he missed another free header, this time from only six yards - yet when the toughest chance came, after being put through by Paqueta with a lovely chipped through ball, he kept his nerve to scoop it over the goalie.

Scamacca did not immediately celebrate and was subjected to a VAR check of several minutes, which looked at whether he was offside or had handled the ball. With no clear evidence to disallow for either reason, the goal was given - and the Italian finally celebrated wildly with fans.

It encapsulated Scamacca's Premier League career so far - a slow start peppered with what-ifs, finally coming good. He is the first West Ham striker to score in his opening two home starts at London Stadium - fans will hope the club's recent poor run of forward signings is at an end.

For West Ham it continues their dominance over Fulham - they have won their last five Premier League games against the Cottagers, while David Moyes has now won 14 of his 15 games against them.

It also means they have won consecutive league matches for the first time since January, further raising hopes a difficult start is behind them.

Mitrovic missed as Fulham frustrated
It was a frustrating afternoon for Marco Silva, who was booked for his remonstrations with the officials after the Scamacca goal was given. Fulham started well but faded after West Ham equalised.

Things could have been very different - Pereira was busy in the opening stages and took his goal brilliantly, his first Premier League strike in two years and 333 days since scoring for Manchester United against Brighton in November 2019.

And had James' 20-yard dipper on 13 minutes been a few inches lower, the story of the game would surely have been different.

Instead this game shows how much Fulham miss Aleksandar Mitrovic when the Serbian bruiser is unavailable. He was absent for this game after aggravating a foot injury last week against Newcastle, and replacement Carlos Vinicius was unremarkable.

Silva also has problems to solve at the other end of the pitch. Fulham have kept just one clean sheet in the past 22 top-flight away meetings, conceding 52 goals.

Comedy mix-ups such as the one between Leno and Ream for West Ham's third aside, Fulham were picked apart regularly and had Scamacca had his sights aligned all game, they could have conceded several more.
 
Eberechi Eze scored a fine goal as Crystal Palace came from behind to beat Leeds at Selhurst Park and end their winless run in the Premier League.

The visitors had deservedly taken the lead early on when Pascal Struijk drove in after Brenden Aaronson hit the post following excellent work inside the box.

Crystal Palace were struggling to impose themselves and Patrick Bamford, making his first Leeds start since August, forced a save out of Vicente Guaita.

But the hosts equalised midway through the first half when Odsonne Edouard headed in from Michael Olise's free-kick.

Jordan Ayew was unable to put Palace ahead in the second half when he appeared in on goal, only for Rasmus Kristensen to make an excellent last-ditch challenge.

But Eze secured the three points with a superb individual strike, running across the edge of the area before firing low into the back of the net.

The win - Palace's first in five Premier League games - moves them up to 15th and three points clear of the relegation zone, level on nine points with Leeds, who are 14th.

Palace started the day in a relatively precarious position, just one point above the bottom three after winning one of their first seven league games.

The caveat, however, was that they had faced four of the traditional 'big six' in that run, so boss Patrick Vieira would have looked to this game as more of an indicator of how they could perform this season.

Initially, the assessment would have been concerning as they struggled to cope with the Leeds press, making sloppy mistakes at the back while passes went astray.

But the Eagles improved after getting the equaliser, and in the end were good value for their win.

While Eze will take the headlines for his excellent goal, just as important to the victory was centre-back Joachim Andersen, who almost singlehandedly repelled anything the visitors had to offer in the second half.

FA reviewing Arsenal v Liverpool confrontation

The Football Association is looking into a confrontation between opposing players in Arsenal's 3-2 win against Liverpool in the Premier League.

Players from both sides clashed following referee Michael Oliver's award of a penalty to Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

Oliver also spoke to both managers on the touchline after the incident.

The FA will speak with Oliver and his officiating team before deciding if any further steps should be taken.

"We are aware of an incident that took place during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool. We are in dialogue with the match officials and will review the details of the incident," an FA spokesperson said.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said in his post-match television interview he was "not allowed" to divulge any more details.

Arteta told a press conference afterwards: "It was an incident that happened. Whatever happens on that pitch stays on that pitch."

Bukayo Saka's penalty in the 76th minute won the match for Arsenal, who went to the top of the Premier League with the victory.

The Football Association is weighing up whether to launch an investigation after an incident involving players from both sides towards the end of Arsenal’s 3-2 win over Liverpool.

Proceedings were briefly paused as Michael Oliver, the referee, ran to the touchline to speak with the managers, Mikel Arteta and Jürgen Klopp, during added time. It is understood to have referred to an argument that erupted inside the Liverpool penalty area and involved several players. Amid the fracas, Gabriel Magalhães was seen in heated discussion with Jordan Henderson and gesturing towards Oliver.

Oliver spoke again to both managers after the game and the matter has been referred to the FA, which will talk to the officials before deciding its next move. “We are aware of an incident that took place during the match between Arsenal and Liverpool,” an FA spokesperson said. “We are in dialogue with the match officials and will review the details of the incident.”

Klopp was left to count the triple cost of a defeat that he admits means Liverpool are “not in the title race”. His side are 14 points behind the leaders after their 3-2 reverse and suffered further blows with injuries to Trent Alexander‑Arnold and Luis Díaz that the manager admitted were “not good”.

Díaz departed before half‑time with a knee injury and Alexander‑Arnold followed at the break having attempted to play on after Gabriel Martinelli accidentally caught his right ankle. Both will go for scans and the stakes for Alexander-Arnold are particularly high. His place in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup thinking has been the subject of considerable conjecture and, having missed Euro 2020 through injury, a similar outcome this time would be a devastating blow for the 24-year-old player.

“Something with the knee, not good,” Klopp said of Díaz. “He will have a scan and then we will know more. I have no idea about the extent. On top of that Trent was bad as well with a twisted ankle. Not good. Trent never comes off, he can play on. He was in too much pain and it started swelling immediately. So he will have a scan.” Any long-term absences would deepen the gloom at Liverpool, who lost against Arsenal for only the second time in 20 meetings despite equalising twice.

They sit 10th with only two wins and this season increasingly looks like a battle simply to retain their Champions League spot, let alone any tilt at top spot.

“We’re not in the race,” he said of the title. “Imagine I would sit here and think: ‘We are nearly there, wait.’ We have problems at the moment but we caused the team in form, the leader of the table, massive problems today. We have to continue. Of course in a situation like ours, we play Rangers and then Man City [in the next week]. Is that the perfect opponent for finding confidence? Probably not but we will go out there and fight. That is what we have to do and what we will do.”

Klopp was unhappy with the penalty award that brought Bukayo Saka’s winner and suggested Gabriel Jesus had made too much of the challenge by Thiago Alcântara. “If I see the situation back, if there was contact, and I’m not sure there was, it might have been soft contact,” he said. “But the player was on both feet and then down. That’s an indication that something might have been made up.” He also suggested Liverpool should have been given a first-half penalty for handball by Magalhães.

Arteta, although visibly delighted at full-time, continued to dampen ideas that Arsenal are genuine title contenders. “On the day we play at our best we have a chance,” he said when asked if his team can beat anyone. “At the moment enjoy where we are, and play with the courage and the belief we played with in the second half and go step by step.”

Nottingham Forest moved off the bottom of the Premier League with a hard-fought draw against Aston Villa.

The result ends a sequence of five consecutive defeats for Steve Cooper's side, who move up to 19th in the table, a point above Leicester and four behind Villa who remain 16th.

Roared on by a vociferous City Ground crowd, Emmanuel Dennis gave the hosts the perfect start, capitalising on some poor marking to head in Morgan Gibbs-White's free-kick after drifting across the front of a static Villa defence.

However, Ashley Young levelled seven minutes later with a superb effort from 25 yards that flew into the bottom left corner.

It was Young's first goal for Villa since 2011 - when he was in his first spell at the club - and it was the only notable moment of attacking inspiration from two sides that struggled in the final third.

While Steven Gerrard's team had an Ollie Watkins effort correctly ruled out for offside and appeals for a penalty waved away when Forest captain Ryan Yates appeared to catch Ezri Konsa, too often their final ball or shot lacked the precision to trouble home goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

The former Spain and Real Madrid head coach was the club’s preferred option to replace Bruno Lage, who was sacked after a defeat at West Ham left the club in the Premier League’s relegation zone.

This is the second time Wolves have tried and failed to secure Lopetegui, who was dismissed by Sevilla last Wednesday after they were beaten 4-1 at home by Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Lopetegui had been the first choice of Wolves’ owner, Fosun, to become manager when the Chinese company bought the club in 2016 but he ended up taking the Spain job.

The 56-year-old won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 and has led them into the Champions League for three successive seasons.

Wolves are poised to go into their game on Saturday at home against Nottingham Forest, who are also in the bottom three, with Steve Davis still in temporary charge.

Davis oversaw the teams’ defeat at Chelsea last weekend.

The EFL are ready to make every match available for live broadcast and end the 3pm Saturday blackout in their next TV rights deal from the 2024-25 season.

Sportsmail has learned that an invitation to bid for live rights will be sent out to interested parties in the next 24 hours, with the EFL targeting Facebook, Netflix, Google, Apple and Amazon in addition to the main domestic rights holders, Sky Sports and BT Sport.

The EFL’s tender document is understood to be a request for proposals rather than a fixed offering, with the board seeking innovative solutions to the changing broadcast market.

The board are convinced that by selling more matches they can get a better deal than the current £119million-a-year contract with Sky, with a target of £200m-a-year.

As a result there no set number of matches or contract length in the document to be sent to broadcasters, with the EFL making clear they are willing to televise every game and ditch the blackout, which has been in place since the 1960s.

Maintaining the current model of selling exclusive rights for a finite number of matches to one broadcaster will also be considered.

The current Sky deal includes 138 games-per-year, with just two Championship matches shown each weekend.

Many of the bigger clubs opposed that deal so will welcome plans to sell more games.

Apple are amongst the companies who will be offered the chance to acquire live rights

Dropping the 3pm blackout would come from the EFL lobbying the FA, who in turn would have to apply to UEFA for an exemption.

The blackout only applies to when 50 per cent of Premier League and Championship matches are due to kick off at 3pm on a Saturday however, so shifting half the programme would also enable all games to be televised.

The Premier League will be watching the EFL’s sales process with interest.

The bigger clubs feel that the top flight’s TV rights are undervalued — with those under American ownership in particular pushing for the right to sell more matches to streaming companies.

With the value of sports rights falling after the pandemic the Premier League opted to renew their existing domestic deal with Sky Sports and BT Sport for the 2022-25 cycle last year rather than gamble with a more innovative approach.

While the Premier League still support the blackout they have largely moved on from that model.

On Saturday, there are just two top-flight kick-offs scheduled for 3pm — Fulham v Bournemouth and Wolves v Nottingham Forest.

Seems like the recruitment guys are being made the scapegoats for Forest’s poor start and Cooper is being backed, but he needs a win relatively soon imo or he will also be out the door as his new contract will obviously include a release clause.

The thing is if your going to bring in 1,000 new players and most of them are mercenaries just after a 1 season payday its asking for trouble. Always takes time for new players to gel, plus come end of season most of these players will be gone. its just silly how in reality they have probably spent the tv money and expected parachute payments (if relegated) and just taken a massive gamble to try and stay in PL.

i dont see how scouts are to blame here, person having final say on transfers is.

However the majority of his coaching team during his time at the club - Rui Pedro Silva, Ian Cathro, Antonio Dias, Joao Lapa and Rui Barbosa are all available.

Nuno is one of the most successful managers in the club's history, leading the team to promotion to the Premier League in his first season.

Back-to-back seventh-placed finishes ensued together with an FA Cup semi-final and a memorable Europe League run which saw them reach the quarter-finals.

The former head coach had a fantastic relationship with the city and even donated £250k of his own money to help tackle poverty in Wolverhampton.

But Nuno was sacked at the end of the 2020-21 season, just one year into a new three-year deal, after a poor campaign interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The reception he received for his final home game vs Manchester United was nothing short of a hero's farewell with thousands lining the streets to say goodbye.

With Wolves currently sitting in the relegation zone ahead of three crucial games with fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Leicester City.

In what would be an emotional reunion, Nuno's knowledge of the club, how it operates and his relationship with a number of the players are seen as a big positive ahead of a crucial appointment that Wolves must get right.

It is believed Wolves are keen to make a swift appointment, however current interim boss Steve Davis will be in the dugout Saturday and most likely at Palace next Tuesday night.

Ivan Toney underlined his England credentials with two goals as Brentford returned to winning ways against Brighton in the Premier League.

While Brighton have enjoyed several excellent results on their travels this season, they struggled for fluidity and incisiveness against high-energy opponents led superbly by Toney on his 100th appearance for the Bees.

The hosts had already seen Bryan Mbeumo's improvised volley cannon off the visitors' crossbar by the time Toney opened the scoring with a wonderful backheeled flick from Frank Onyeka's right-wing delivery.

With Brighton searching for an equaliser after the break, Toney then doubled their advantage after Joel Veltman's crude challenge allowed him to convert his eighth successive top-flight penalty.

The result sees Thomas Frank's side move up to eighth in the table, a place and a point behind the Seagulls, who are yet to win under new manager Roberto de Zerbi.

Toney was called into the England squad for September's Nations League fixtures against Italy and Germany but was not used by Gareth Southgate.

Wolves came out on top in a game of two penalties to climb out of the relegation zone and leave Nottingham Forest bottom of the Premier League.

Skipper Ruben Neves drove the hosts in front from the spot after a four-minute video assistant referee delay at the start of the second half.

After a second lengthy VAR intervention when referee Thomas Bramall initially missed Matheus Nunes pulling back Ryan Yates, Wolves keeper Jose Sa superbly turned away Brennan Johnson's spot-kick.

The save was made more remarkable as Sa has been playing with a broken bone in his wrist since he damaged it against Fulham on 13 August.

Max Kilman earlier hit the inside of a post with a header and was unfortunate the rebound went straight to Forest keeper Dean Henderson.

It was a superb way for interim Wolves bosses Steve Davis and James Collins to start a potentially crucial week that ends with a home game against Leicester next Sunday.

However, the pain goes on for Forest boss Steve Cooper. His side are without a win since August and have picked up a single point from their past seven games.

Brighton shooting blanks again. Gone back to being a mediocre team that can’t score goals now Graham Potter has left.
 
Palace come back from 0-1 down to lead 2-1 at home again. They’ve been brilliant in this latter half. The second goal from Zaha was just fantastic!
