English Premier League 2022/23 Season Discussion

Manchester United produced arguably their finest performance under manager Erik ten Hag as Tottenham were swept aside 2-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

Darwin Nunez scored his first Anfield goal for Liverpool and Alisson saved a penalty as the Reds defeated West Ham 1-0 in an incident-packed encounter.

Southampton relieved the pressure on boss Ralph Hasenhuttl with their first win in six games against south-coast rivals Bournemouth, who lost for the first time under interim manager Gary O'Neil.

Chelsea extended their unbeaten run to seven games under Graham Potter after a goalless draw against a battling Brentford side.

Liverpool got the points without looking overtly impressive. Had it not been for the keeper who saved a penalty we could have lost two crucial points. Talking of that Chelsea who sign any and every player can't get many wins on the field of play. Drawing at Brentford is not a good result at all.

Man Utd appeared decent if not brilliant against the Spurs at OT. I think Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool are at the same level at the moment. One of them will surely go on a run sooner or later challenging Arsenal and Man City.

Chelsea and Spurs have both lost points:yasir

Fulham increased the pressure on beleaguered Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard with a deserved victory at Craven Cottage.

Harrison Reed gave the home side the lead, drilling home after Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez had punched a corner into the midfielder's path.

Andreas Pereira went close on two occasions, while Aleksandar Mitrovic had a far-post header cleared off the line by Tyrone Mings as the home side dominated the first half.

Villa's evening went from bad to worse just after the hour mark, when Douglas Luiz was shown a straight red card after being adjudged by the video assistant referee to have head-butted Mitrovic in an off-the-ball altercation.

The home side wasted little time in capitalising on their numerical advantage, Mitrovic doubling their lead from the penalty spot after the striker's shot had struck Matty Cash on the arm.

The visitors' misery was complete when Mings diverted Neeskens Kebano's low cross into his own net - a goal which was greeted by chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" by sections of the away end.

The result leaves Gerrard's side teetering precariously above the relegation zone in 17th, while Fulham climb into the top half.

Leicester City claimed a valuable Premier League victory over fellow strugglers Leeds as they moved off the bottom of the table.

The result saw Brendan Rodgers' team enjoy only their second success of the campaign, while Leeds, who stay 16th, are now without a win in their last seven top-flight matches.

Robin Koch's own goal set the hosts on their way before either side had managed a shot, with the Leeds defender sliding Dennis Praet's cross past his own goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

While Leeds had opportunities to level, in particular when Luis Sinisterra struck the woodwork, they repeatedly left themselves open at the back.

And an unmarked Harvey Barnes punished them, doubling the Foxes lead from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's cross.

While the result should ease the pressure on Leicester boss Rodgers, his Leeds counterpart Jesse Marsch's position is likely to come under greater scrutiny, with their last win on 21 August.

GOAL - Nottingham Forest 1-0 Liverpool
Taiwo Awoniyi

Taiwo Awoniyi was fouled for the free-kick near the halfway line and he is the one who scores the goal.

The free-kick is played wide right to Steve Cook, he fizzes in a low cross and it falls to Awoniyi. His first shot bounces off the right post but he is the quickest to react to the follow-up and tucks it away.

Forest lead and the City Ground is boucing.

West Ham leading Bournemouth 1-0 after an hour, and looking dominant. Can they close out the win?

West Ham moved up seven places to 10th in the Premier League table as Kurt Zouma's controversial goal helped them beat Bournemouth.

Zouma glanced in a close-range header just before half-time, but the Cherries were furious as the ball appeared to hit the hands of Hammers defender Thilo Kehrer earlier in the move.

However, after a check by the video assistant referee the goal was allowed to stand as they deemed the handball accidental and said it had not directly led to a goal.

Nevertheless, Bournemouth caretaker boss Gary O'Neil was upset with the decision and was booked after talking to referee David Coote as the teams left the field at half-time.

The hosts were awarded a penalty in the 91st minute when Bournemouth's Jordan Zemura was deemed to have handled the ball when sliding in trying to block a cross, with Said Benrahma converting from the spot to secure victory.

It was a tough evening for the Cherries, now without a win in three matches, as they lost striker Dominic Solanke and goalkeeper Neto to injury after only 45 minutes.

Team news - Haaland missing for City

Leicester v Man City (12:30 BST)

Jamie Vardy returns to the Leicester starting XI as one of two changes from last weekend's thumping win at Wolves.

The former England striker replaces Patson Daka, while centre-back Caglar Soyuncu is handed his first Premier League start of the season.

Midfielder Boubakary Soumare, who was substituted after 60 minutes against Wolves, is missing from the squad.

Leicester City XI: Ward, Justin, Faes, Söyüncü, Barnes, Tielemans, Vardy, Maddison, Amartey, Dewsbury-Hall, Castagne.

The headline in Manchester City's team news, as we've told you, is the absence of striker Erling Haaland.

That's one of seven changes made by City boss Pep Guardiola from the midweek Champions League draw in Dortmund.

Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, goalkeeper Ederson and forward Jack Grealish are among the returning players, while Phil Foden is one of those who drop to the bench.

Manchester City XI:Ederson, Stones, Cancelo, Gündogan, Grealish, Laporte, Rodri, De Bruyne, Álvarez, Silva, Akanji.

RESULT: Leicester City 0-1 Manchester City - Kevin de Bruyne's stunning second-half free-kick enough to earn win and send City to top of Premier League

ulham extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to four matches but had to be content with just a point following another inspired display by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

England's number one pulled off a string of fine saves to earn the visitors a fourth clean sheet of the season.

Aleksandar Mitrovic had two efforts turned away as the Serbia striker failed to add to his nine goals this season.

Willian also went close on his 265th appearance in the Premier League, the most for any Brazilian in the English top flight.

Fulham were denied two unlikely penalty shouts either side of the break following checks by VAR, while Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin had an effort ruled out for a clear offside.

The point moved last season's Championship winners into seventh place, while Everton are back up to 12th, building on manager Frank Lampard's call for consistency following their victory at home to Crystal Palace last time out.

Free-scoring Fulham kept at bay
Only Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham had scored more than Fulham's 22 goals in the Premier League going into this weekend's fixtures.

Manager Marco Silva says this form is merely a continuation of the attacking philosophy put in place as they rattled in 106 goals on their way to the Championship title last season.

But Pickford proved his rightful place as England's top stopper to keep free-scoring Fulham at bay.

He produced three saves in quick succession in a breathless start to the game, tipping over Willian's shot on the turn and Mitrovic's looping header before palming away a curling long-range effort from Harrison Reed.

Everton striker Calvert-Lewin, whose return to the side following injury was hoped would boost their tally of just 11 goals in 13 games, also helped keep Fulham out, producing a headed goalline clearance.

When Fulham did manage to breach the Everton rear-guard, Tim Ream's free header from Andreas Pereira's centre bounced just wide of Pickford's far post.

There were few protests from the home side when referee John Brooks ruled out any claims for a Fulham penalty following a check of his monitor after James Tarkowski tangled with Bobby Decordova-Reid in the box.

Silva's side remained the dominant force in the second half, with VAR again ruling out a penalty shout after Willian went down following a stretched challenge from Idrissa Gueye.

The pace noticeably dropped as Everton's own forays up-field tailed off, and in the end Fulham, for all their endeavour, had to settle for a point.

It's all over!

Manchester United hang on!

Marcus Rashford's header is the difference - the one true moment of attacking quality. West Ham threw all they had at trying to find a leveller and will probably reflect back on how they should have taken at least a point.

Marcus Rashford scored his 100th goal for Manchester United as the Red Devils beat West Ham to move above Chelsea into fifth in the Premier League.

Rashford reached the landmark with a header from Christian Eriksen's ball just before half-time.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was named in the starting line-up, headed wide as the hosts pushed for a second.

West Ham pressed in the closing stages as David de Gea made good saves to deny Michail Antonio and Kurt Zouma.

Victory for Manchester United means they go fifth in the table with 23 points, one place and one point below Newcastle but with a game in hand.

West Ham, meanwhile, are 13th on 14 points.

<b>Wolves are closing in on the appointment of Julen Lopetegui as their new manager after reopening talks with the former Spain boss.</b>

The 56-year-old had initially turned down a move to Molineux last month due to his father being ill.

But Lopetegui is now back in the frame and Wolves are increasingly confident of landing their man after three attempts, the PA news agency understands.

The former Real Madrid and Sevilla boss is not expected to be in charge before the World Cup break but Wolves look set to finally end their chase with Lopetegui having originally been close to moving to Molineux in 2016 before he became Spain manager.

Wolves turned to QPR’s Michael Beale after Lopetegui decided against joining them in October only for Beale to perform a U-turn and opt to stay at Loftus Road.

They then said caretaker boss Steve Davis would take charge until 2023, although an appointment before the end of the year was always a possibility.

Wolves are second bottom of the Premier League, having won just twice this season, and are in desperate need of inspiration after only scoring six top-flight goals.

Lopetegui won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020, beating Wolves 1-0 in the quarter-final, while he spent two years in charge of Spain before joining Real Madrid in 2018, although he lasted just 138 days at the Bernabeu.

Wolves have been looking for a new manager since Bruno Lage was sacked at the start of October.

https://www.independent.co.uk/sport...olves-steve-davis-spain-sevilla-b2215525.html

Wolves have appointed Spaniard Julen Lopetegui as their new manager after he had initially turned them down.

The 56-year-old will take charge on 14 November, when the Premier League pauses for the World Cup in Qatar.

Lopetegui was the club's first choice to take over after they dismissed Bruno Lage on 2 October but he opted to stay at home to be near his elderly father.

"Julen is a top coach, with excellent experience at an elite level of the game," said Wolves chairman Jeff Shi.

"Since the very beginning, Julen has been our number one choice to manage Wolves, and we look forward to welcoming him and his team when they join us in the coming weeks."

Lopetegui's first match will be away to Everton in the Premier League on 26 December.

Former Real Madrid boss Lopetegui was sacked by Sevilla after three years in charge following a Champions League group game defeat by Borussia Dortmund in October.

Lopetegui was appointed Sevilla boss in June 2019 and led the club to the Europa League title in 2020.

His Wolves predecessor Lage was sacked after a run of one win in 15 Premier League matches, going back to last season, with caretaker Steve Davis currently charge.

The club had previously said Davis would remain in charge until 2023 after QPR boss Michael Beale rejected the job.

Wolves have lost three of their past five games under Davis and are second from bottom of the Premier League - two points below Southampton, who are just outside the relegation zone in 17th.

They play Brighton at Molineux on Saturday at 15:00 GMT, host Leeds in the EFL Cup third round on Wednesday and then play Arsenal on 12 November in their final game before the World Cup break.

Lopetegui, who was due to coach Spain at the 2018 World Cup only to be sacked days before the tournament after accepting an offer from Real Madrid, is familiar to Wolves chairman Shi.

The pair spoke about Lopetegui becoming Wolves manager in 2016 following the takeover of the club by Chinese conglomerate Fosun.

Instead, he coached Spain and then Real Madrid - lasting just 138 days in charge of the latter before being sacked after a 5-1 defeat by Barcelona - before joining Sevilla in June 2019.

A former goalkeeper, Lopetegui played for Real Madrid and Barcelona and won one cap for Spain.

BBC

Ten-man Wolves slipped to defeat as Pascal Gross' 83rd-minute winner completed Brighton's comeback victory at Molineux to keep their hosts in the relegation zone.

On the day former Spain and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui was announced as their next manager, Wolves showed battling qualities as they played the second-half a man down following Nelson Semedo's red card just before half-time.

But they could not hold off increasing Brighton pressure and lost for the eighth time this season, despite scoring twice in a game for the first time.

A pulsating opening period had seen Wolves respond to falling behind to a rare Adam Lallana goal with Goncalo Guedes and a Ruben Neves penalty putting them 2-1 up.

They then conceded an equaliser a minute from Japan international Kaoru Mitoma before the break.

But Semedo's dismissal for a foul on Mitoma shortly afterwards changed the dynamic of the contest.

Winger Mitoma was a pivotal figure in the game and it was his run into the box that created the opportunity for Gross' winner.

The result leaves Wolves sitting second-bottom of the league with 10 points, while Brighton are sixth.

<b>Leicester City climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone as Youri Tielemans' sensational first-half strike set Brendan Rodgers' side on their way to a thoroughly deserved victory at Everton.</b>

Tielemans controlled James Maddison's cut-back with his thigh before sending a dipping effort into the top corner of Jordan Pickford's goal from the edge of the penalty area.

Harvey Barnes put the result beyond doubt in the closing stages, rifling a powerful shot past Pickford for his fifth league goal of the campaign.

The visitors dominated the first half but missed several opportunities to take the lead prior to Tielemans' moment of inspiration on the stroke of half-time.

Rodgers' team continued to create the better openings in the second half, Patson Daka blazing over the crossbar from a good position and the outstanding Maddison striking the outside of the woodwork with a curling, long-range shot.

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin was forced off with an injury just after the hour-mark to cap a miserable afternoon for the Toffees and their supporters.

The win lifts Leicester up to 13th - two places above the Toffees due to their superior goal difference.

Maddison's sparkling display will have done his hopes of a place in Gareth Southgate's England World Cup squad no harm whatsoever.

The 25-year-old was at the heart of the Foxes' best attacking moves but the visitors' finishing proved their downfall early on, Pickford producing a one-handed save to deny Daka before Barnes blazed over the crossbar from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's pass.

The only thing missing from Maddison's performance was a goal. James Tarkowski and Idrissa Gueye both produced blocks to deny the former Norwich man in the first half, before he rattled the woodwork with an ingenious effort midway through the second half.

He did, however, set up both Leicester goals - the first of which was a contender for goal of the season from Tielemans. The Belgium international is out of contract next summer but Rodgers has said he will "continue to work with" the 25-year-old despite his uncertain future.

Just as Everton appeared to be pushing for an equaliser, Barnes collected Maddison's lay-off before beating Pickford with a ferocious effort.

After conceding 22 goals in their first eight league games of the campaign, Leicester have shipped just three in their previous seven.

Before the game, Frank Lampard had called on his Everton players to "find consistency week-in, week-out" after collecting four points from their past two games against Crystal Palace and Fulham.

But the Toffees boss will have been left bitterly disappointed with his team's disjointed showing against Leicester, who registered 15 shots in the first half alone.

The hosts were guilty of squandering possession on several occasions, while Calvert-Lewin struggled for service in a toothless first-half performance.

Alex Iwobi, who flashed an early shot wide after Gueye had robbed Boubakary Soumare of the ball, released Calvert-Lewin in the opening minutes of the second half but the Everton striker shot straight at the onrushing Danny Ward.

While Maddison was able to enhance his World Cup prospects, Calvert-Lewin's hopes of being included in Southgate's squad appear to be hanging in the balance after the 25-year-old's second-half injury.

The Sheffield-born frontman went down clutching the back of his left thigh before being replaced by Neal Maupay.

<b>Southampton have decided to sack manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.</b>

The Premier League side have agreed to sack the Austrian either during the World Cup break or before they play their final match before the tournament, against Liverpool at Anfield next Saturday.

Southampton had wanted to wait until the break before making a decision, but could now act sooner.

A dismal 4-1 defeat by Newcastle United at St Mary’s on Sunday leaves Southampton languishing in 18th place after just three Premier League wins from their opening 14 matches.

Hasenhuttl joined Southampton in December 2018 and has consistently kept the club in the Premier League.

They finished a creditable 11th in his first full season in charge after he replaced Mark Hughes, followed by two consecutive 15th-place finishes.

He did, however, oversee two humiliating 9-0 defeats during his time in charge — one in 2019 against Leicester City and the other in 2021 against Manchester United.

Southampton were in desperate need of a performance on Sunday after three home games without a victory, but were a distant second best to Newcastle throughout the game.

(The Athletic)

Southampton have sacked their manager Ralph Hasenhuttl in the wake of Sunday's 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle.

Hasenhuttl, who was appointed in December 2018, departs with the club in the Premier League relegation zone with 12 points after 14 games.

Southampton last won at Bournemouth on 19 October in what is their only win from the past nine matches.

"We now believe it is an appropriate time to make a change," said a statement from the south coast club.

First team coach Ruben Selles will take charge for Wednesday's Carabao Cup third round home game against League One side Sheffield Wednesday.

Scoring goals has been a particular problem for Hasenhuttl's side and the 55-year-old Austrian bemoaned his players wasting opportunities against Newcastle.

Afterwards he said he was not concerned about the risk of losing his job, but the Saints board have decided to act before the midweek EFL Cup game and Saturday's trip to Liverpool. It is their final game before the Premier League breaks for the World Cup, which runs from 20 November to 18 December.

Southampton added that Hasenhuttl had departed "having made a significant contribution to the club, overseeing some memorable results and also playing a key role in the development of our club infrastructure, identity and playing squad".

The Saints "will be announcing a permanent replacement in due course" and one of the early frontrunners for the post is Luton Town boss Nathan Jones.

Hasenhuttl has become the fifth Premier League manager to be sacked so far this season.

Scott Parker, Bruno Lage, Thomas Tuchel and Steven Gerrard were dismissed by Bournemouth , Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively, while Graham Potter left Brighton to take over as Chelsea boss.

Hasenhuttl highs and lows
Former RB Leipzig manager Hasenhuttl succeeded Mark Hughes as Saints boss with the club 18th in the Premier League and guided them to safety at the end of that season.

His first full season in charge saw them finish 11th in a campaign disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, before a 15th-placed finish in 2020-21.

During that season, Southampton were top of the Premier League for the first time ever when they led on goal difference after eight games.

In January 2021, Hasenhuttl cut an emotional figure as he enjoyed a victory against defending champions Liverpool.

However, in February that year, Southampton were beaten 9-0 by Manchester United. It was the second defeat by that margin during his time at the club, having lost to Leicester by the same scoreline in October 2019.

After a stuttering start last season a winter revival saw them rise to as high as ninth in February, but they lost nine and won just one of their final 12 matches to slump to 15th.

The club responded by reshuffling Hasenhuttl's coaching team over the summer, with Kelvin Davis, Dave Watson and Craig Fleming all leaving St Mary's.

They also brought in numerous players, including goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, striker Sekou Mara, midfielder Joe Aribo and defenders Armel Bella-Kotchap and Duje Caleta-Car.

But that has failed to spark an upturn in form.

Southampton have only scored 12 goals in their 14 Premier League games this season and were wasteful again against third-placed Newcastle in what proved to be the manager's final match.

"Newcastle have shown why they are where they are," he said in his BBC Sport interview after the game.

"They were clinical in the right moments. They have shown us how to win games. I cannot say we played a bad game but not playing a bad game is not enough to win games. That's why we are where we are."

BBC

Southampton have been given permission to speak to Luton Town boss Nathan Jones about their managerial vacancy after sacking Ralph Hasenhuttl.

Hasenhuttl left the club earlier on Monday in the wake of the Saints' 4-1 home defeat by Newcastle.

Southampton have won just one of their past nine matches and are in the Premier League relegation zone.

Luton will allow the club to speak to Jones after their Championship match at Stoke City on Tuesday.

"We would like to place on record that the Premier League club have approached the board in the correct manner, for which we are grateful, and that the whole situation is extremely amicable with Southampton and with Nathan," said the Hatters, who are eighth in the Championship table.

"We would also like to urge all supporters travelling to Stoke to show him and the team your support on what we hope will be yet another memorable away day."

Former Brighton and Yeovil player Jones is in his second spell as Luton manager, having taken the club from League Two to League One in his first three-year tenure between 2016-19.

In 2019, with Luton on course for promotion to the Championship, he replaced Gary Rowett as Stoke boss, but returned to the Hatters 18 months later.

First team coach Ruben Selles will take charge of Southampton for Wednesday's Carabao Cup third round home game against League One side Sheffield Wednesday.

Hasenhuttl, who was appointed in December 2018, is the fifth Premier League manager to be sacked so far this season.

Scott Parker, Bruno Lage, Thomas Tuchel and Steven Gerrard were dismissed by Bournemouth, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Chelsea and Aston Villa respectively, while Graham Potter left Brighton to take over as Chelsea boss.

Bournemouth breezed past struggling Everton (3-0) for the second time in a week to pile the pressure on Toffees boss Frank Lampard.

The visitors, who were thrashed 4-1 by the Cherries in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, have now lost five of their last seven Premier League games to slip to 17th in the table, just one place and one point outside the relegation zone.

The home side took the lead early on when Dominic Solanke's curling effort was parried by Jordan Pickford into the path of Marcus Tavernier, who bundled the ball home for his second Premier League goal in as many matches.

Wales international Kieffer Moore doubled Bournemouth's advantage seven minutes later with a powerful header from close range after Tavernier had helped the ball back into the box, although Lampard was furious that the game was allowed to continue after James Tarkowski suffered a head injury in the build-up.

Everton improved after the break and went close through Idrissa Gueye, while the impressive Tavernier would have extended Bournemouth's lead but for a fine stop by Pickford.

Bournemouth did get a third goal when substitute Jaidon Anthony, who also scored against Everton in midweek, headed home Lewis Cook's free-kick with virtually his first touch.

The win, which lifts Bournemouth above Everton into 13th place, caps a fine few days for interim boss Gary O'Neil, with a decision over a permanent manager expected during the World Cup break.

Newcastle boosted their European ambitions with a statement win over Chelsea thanks to Joe Willock's delightful goal.

Having slipped to fourth in the table following Tottenham's win over Leeds earlier in the day, Eddie Howe's rejuvenated side regained third spot before the World Cup break, and will be in a Champions League place at Christmas for the first time since 2001.

A fifth successive Premier League win, against an admittedly out-of-form Chelsea, was achieved with England striker Callum Wilson starting on the bench, plus a solidity and fluency that their opponents could not match.

Having worked Graham Potter's side hard in the first half, and after Sean Longstaff wasted two great chances shortly after the break, Willock finally found a breakthrough when he curled in from 18 yards following a surging run by Miguel Almiron.

A youthful Chelsea, without Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling, improved in the second half after the introduction Christian Pulisic.

A Pulisic run led to a Conor Gallagher shot, which was well saved by Nick Pope, but they could not break down a well-drilled Newcastle.

After Liverpool's win over Southampton, Chelsea's third consecutive Premier League defeat means they have slipped to eighth in the table, eight points behind fourth-placed Tottenham.

Arsenal moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League as Martin Odegaard's second-half double proved enough to beat Wolves at Molineux.

Odegaard turned home Fabio Vieira's low cross from close range 10 minutes after the restart and then drilled in the rebound after Jose Sa had kept out Gabriel Martinelli's low effort 15 minutes from time.

The only negative for the visitors was the exit of Granit Xhaka in the early stages just over a week before the midfielder is due to begin his World Cup campaign with Switzerland.

The result means Arsenal will not only be top on Christmas Day for the first time since 2007 but will do so with a handy advantage over nearest challengers Manchester City.

In contrast, Wolves are now bottom as new manager Julen Lopetegui prepares to take charge.

The former Spain, Real Madrid and Sevilla boss was introduced 15 minutes before kick-off at Molineux and watched the game from the stands.

He saw a microcosm of Wolves' season given the hosts battled hard and produced some opportunities despite spending much of the game on the back foot, but were undone by a lack of goal threat as they failed to score for the eighth time in 15 top-flight games.

Arsenal looking like the real thing now going in to the WC. If anything the WC could disturb Arsenal's momentum more then Man City's. Nunez scores two in a good home win versus the Saints and Spurs win a thriller too. Still believe Man City will win the EPL, there bench strength will eventually be the difference. Chelsea are the ones who should be concerned the most.

What a mess from Aston Villa and Brighton lead within about 50 seconds.

Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez passes the ball to Douglas Luiz but it's slightly underhit and Alexis Mac Allister bundles the Brazilian off the ball before lashing home.

<b>Bournemouth 'are set to give Gary O'Neil their permanent manager's job after impressing in an interim role after talks with former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa stalled'</b>

Bournemouth are set to make Gary O'Neil their permanent manager, according to reports.

The promoted Premier League side sacked Scott Parker in August and have not yet appointed a full-time replacement, with the former Portsmouth midfielder impressing in the interim role since then.

And as reported by The Telegraph, after talks with ex-Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa stalled, the Cherries will back O'Neil to save them from relegation.

Bournemouth have won four, drawn four and lost four of their 12 games under his temporary stewardship and lie 14th in the Premier League, as far away from the top half as they are the relegation zone.

Argentine Bielsa did reportedly hold discussions over a potential return to the Premier League, but 39-year-old O'Neil is set to get the job.

It is understood the south coast side are prepared to back him with significant funds in the January transfer market.

The new boss is said to be targeting four signings as American businessman Bill Foley's takeover bid continues to progress.

O'Neil's predecessor Parker had often clashed with the board over a lack of financial backing.

After their final match before the World Cup break, a dominant 3-0 win against fellow strugglers Everton, O'Neil said: 'I think 13 [points] from 11 is a good total.

'As always, I wish it could have been more, especially with some of the situations we put ourselves in.

'A big cup win and 13 points from 11 Premier League games for a newly promoted side is good going. We scored a lot of goals as well.'

Arsenal are top of the Premier League, winning their last game before the World Cup break, 2-0 at Wolves
The last we saw of the Premier League was on Sunday, 13 November, with Manchester United snatching an injury-time winner at Fulham.

Six weeks have passed, during which we have been glued to events in Qatar, where Wales fell at the group stage and England suffered penalty woe again, before Argentina lifted the 2022 World Cup.

On 26 December the English top flight returns, and just in case you had forgotten how we left it, BBC Sport will bring you up to speed.

They have amassed 37 points, dropping them in just two fixtures so far - their only defeat coming at Manchester United in early September.

After their best Premier League start, this is the first time they will be top at Christmas since the 2007-08 season.

All seven teams to win 12 of their first 14 games have won the Premier League title.

Another good omen for the Gunners is the team that topped the table on Christmas Day have been champions in 10 of the past 13 seasons.

In their first game back they face West Ham at Emirates Stadium.

With second-placed Manchester City not playing until 28 December - at Leeds - victory would take the Gunners eight points clear of the champions.

Newcastle - the surprise challengers at the top end of the table - are at Leicester on 26 December and will want to pick up where they left off. A sixth consecutive win would move them above Manchester City and into second.

There are a few teams in the top half who will probably have appreciated the chance to take stock during the World Cup before going again.

Tottenham beat Leeds before the break, but had lost three of the previous four. They get us under way on Monday with an away game at Brentford (12:30 GMT).

Graham Potter's Chelsea have not won in five Premier League games and spent the World Cup break in eighth.

On the evidence of the first 14 or so games, this season's relegation battle could be wide open.

Just nine points separate the bottom 12 sides in the division, with Wolves propping everybody up.

Only six teams have ever been bottom at Christmas and stayed up - with half of those in the first three Premier League campaigns - but Wanderers will be looking to buck that trend with a new man at the helm.

Julen Lopetegui took charge on 14 November and is already targeting big improvements, including in his squad, with the Spaniard wanting six new signings when the transfer window opens on 1 January.

Southampton also made a managerial switch shortly before the break, with Nathan Jones arriving from Luton to replace the sacked Ralph Hasenhuttl at St Mary's. The Saints have lost their past three games and are 19th, two points from safety.

It is perhaps surprising to see no more clubs opt to make a change, with the World Cup effectively providing a mid-campaign mini pre-season.

Everton have stuck by manager Frank Lampard despite sitting 17th off the back of two consecutive defeats, and David Moyes remains West Ham boss even though they have lost three on the trot and sit just a point above the bottom three.

An intense, mid-season World Cup always carried the risk of fatigue and injuries to players.

Leaders Arsenal could well be the worst impacted as a result of a serious knee injury picked up by Brazil striker Gabriel Jesus.

It could well be late February before we see him in action again after what had been an impressive start to his time with the Gunners, albeit one that had seen him fail to score in six league games before the break.

In contrast, despite having the most players of any club at the World Cup with 16, Manchester City currently have no injuries to report.

The majority of their representatives in Qatar were out of the tournament by the semi-finals, with only Argentina's Julian Alvarez making it beyond the last eight.

In addition, the Premier League's top scorer Erling Haaland has been able to rest for five weeks, ready to return and try to add to his remarkable tally of 18 goals in 13 games. The Norway striker played his first match for City since November's defeat by Brentford in a 2-0 friendly win against Girona on 17 December, and scored, as did Belgium's Kevin de Bruyne.

Keen interest will be paid towards which players who were injured before the World Cup will be ready for action again.

The likes of Reece James and Wesley Fofana at Chelsea, Newcastle striker Alexander Isak and Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin could all return, although Liverpool striker Luis Diaz has had knee surgery and faces a further three months out.

Fixtures come thick and fast
In order to incorporate the World Cup into the domestic season, matches will now be played regularly so all fixtures can be fulfilled in a timely fashion.

Between now and the end of January there are five rounds of English top-flight fixtures. These all come after some clubs have featured in the Carabao Cup fourth round, with those games having taken place on 20-22 December.

In addition, the FA Cup third round will be played 6-9 January, before some teams return to European action in mid-February.
