English Premier League 2022/23 Season Discussion

KICK-OFF
Brentford 1-0 Tottenham

The home side get the game back under way.

England captain Harry Kane scored in the first Premier League match since the World Cup as Tottenham fought back from 2-0 down to draw with Brentford.

The Bees were on course for their first win over Spurs since 1948 after goals from Vitaly Janelt and Ivan Toney, before Spurs netted twice in the last 25 minutes.

Kane, who scored one penalty and missed another in England's 2-1 quarter-final loss to France, pulled one back in the 65th minute with an excellent header from Clement Lenglet's cross.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg made it 2-2 with a curling finish six minutes later - and neither side was able to find a winner, with Kane heading a chance against the crossbar.

The hosts had taken a 15th-minute lead through Janelt's close-range effort after goalkeeper Fraser Forster, in his first league start for Spurs, could only block the ball into his path following Mathias Jensen's volley.

Brentford doubled their advantage as Toney grabbed his 11th league goal of the season, reacting quickest to tap in after Christian Norgaard had headed on a corner, but it was not enough.

Toney, 26, was appearing in his first game since being charged by the Football Association with 262 alleged betting breaches. He has until 4 January to respond to the charges.

The result leaves Spurs fourth in the table while Brentford are ninth before the 15:00 GMT kick-offs.

Goals from Bobby de Cordova-Reid, Tim Ream and Aleksandar Mitrovic inspired Fulham to victory over nine-man Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

Dominant throughout, Marco Silva's side were helped by Palace's indiscipline in either half, which put a stop to their hopes of a fourth straight home win.

Tyrick Mitchell was shown a red card for a foul on Kenny Tete just three minutes after his side went behind, and James Tomkins followed him before the hour.

The result strengthens the visitors' unlikely European push, as they sit in eighth, just two points off the top six.

Heading towards the half-hour mark, Palace, having struggled to impose themselves early on, almost took the lead.

Clever play by Michael Olise freed Jordan Ayew inside the area, but he saw his effort crash off the bar.

Fulham made them pay moments later when De Cordova-Reid headed the visitors into a deserved lead as Mitrovic pounced on slack play from Joachim Andersen before finding his team-mate with a pinpoint cross.

The hosts' misery was compounded further when Mitchell was dismissed after Tete reached a loose ball first and was caught by the Palace man.

Any chance of a quick Palace resurgence were quashed 12 minutes after the break. Tomkins, on a booking, appeared to elbow Mitrovic off the ball, resulting in a second red card of the game.

Ream then reacted quickly to Mitrovic's knock-down from a corner to double Fulham's lead on 71 minutes.

Referee Andy Madley checked the VAR monitor for a potential handball against the Serb, only to stick with his original decision, before Mitrovic made it three 10 minutes from time.

Adam Lallana scored against his former club as Brighton dealt Southampton boss Nathan Jones a 3-1 defeat on his first Premier League home game in charge at St Mary's Stadium.

Southampton were booed off by their own supporters at half-time after a header by former captain Lallana and an own goal by left-back Romain Perraud heaped more misery on Jones' relegation-threatened side.

Solly March then added a third for the Seagulls in the second half, thumping a shot into the top corner from 20 yards out that Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu had no chance of saving.

A penalty was awarded to Southampton in the 73rd minute after Samuel Edozie ran into Pascal Gross inside the area, and while Sanchez saved James Ward-Prowse's initial effort, he could not keep out the headed rebound by the home skipper.

Southampton had come into the game on the back of Tuesday's 2-1 win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup fourth round and they caused Brighton early problems when Moussa Djenepo's cross was diverted out before a Ward-Prowse corner was punched to safety by Seagulls goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The optimism faded, however, after Lallana found March out wide on the right and continued his run into the box, meeting the winger's cross and guiding his header past Bazunu in the 14th minute.

Southampton fell further behind when Pervis Estupinan sent a low ball across goal which sent panic through the Saints defence. Perraud got there before March but the French defender could not adjust his feet and put the ball into his own net.

Saints stay 19th in the table, while Brighton move up to sixth before seventh-placed Liverpool take on Aston Villa at 17:30 GMT.

Aston Villa 1-3 Liverpool

All over.

Liverpool were made to work hard for it but they pick up three Premier League wins in a row.

It's Aston Villa's first league defeat under Unai Emery.

Rayan Ait-Nouri scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Wolves came from behind to win at fellow strugglers Everton and move off the bottom of the Premier League.

A first away victory of the season proved a perfect late Christmas present for Julen Lopetegui, who becomes the first Wolves manager to win his first top-flight match in charge of the club since John Barnwell in 1978.

The visitors made far from an ideal start, falling behind early on when Yerry Mina glanced Dwight McNeil's near-post corner into the net.

However, they levelled midway through the first period from a well-worked corner routine with Daniel Podence calmly sliding the ball past home goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from Joao Moutinho's lobbed pass to the back post.

It was no more than the visitors deserved in an entertaining encounter but one in which the attacking shortcomings of both sides came into focus.

Idrissa Gueye's incisive pass to Anthony Gordon should have allowed the hosts to regain the lead but the Everton winger was superbly denied by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa, while Neal Maupay twice failed to capitalise from promising positions.

Wolves to sign Cunha on initial loan on 1 January
It was far from from one-way traffic though, Wolves forward Diego Costa was unable to get enough power on a diving header to beat Pickford, who also repelled Hugo Bueno's placed effort after the break.

And while Everton saw Ben Godfrey's late effort hacked to safety by Ruben Neves, Wolves went up the other end in the 95th minute to claim a valuable victory, with Ait-Nouri turning the ball past Pickford from Adama Traore's cross.

Arsenal underlined their title credentials by producing a second-half fightback to beat West Ham and move seven points clear at the top as the Premier League returned after the World Cup.

West Ham took the lead against the run of play when Jarrod Bowen was judged to have been clipped in the box by William Saliba, allowing Said Benrahma to smash a confident penalty down the middle.

There was a mood of frustration among the home fans until Bukayo Saka converted from close range after collecting Martin Odegaard's mis-hit shot.

The equaliser gave increased impetus to the Gunners and another home goal looked increasingly likely.

Five minutes later, it duly arrived. Gabriel Martinelli put the hosts ahead, catching out West Ham's former Gunners keeper Lukasz Fabianski by tucking inside the near post from a tight angle when he looked more likely to cross.

The points were sealed when Eddie Nketiah - starting in place of the injured Gabriel Jesus - spun sharply in the box before firing into the opposite bottom corner.

Arsenal extended their lead at the top over Newcastle, who moved second by beating Leicester earlier on Monday.

Reigning champions Manchester City - who go to Leeds United on Wednesday - are now eight points behind the Gunners.

West Ham are 16th and just a point above the relegation zone after their fourth league defeat in a row.

Chelsea boosted their top-four hopes as they resumed their Premier League season with a comfortable victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

Having failed to score in three consecutive matches prior to the break for the World Cup it took Chelsea less than 16 minutes to get up and running with Kai Havertz sliding in an effort at the back post from Raheem Sterling's low cross.

With the hosts dominant, Mason Mount celebrated his 150th appearance for Chelsea in style, curling a superb effort into the bottom right corner of the Bournemouth net from the edge of the penalty area.

It drew a nod of satisfaction from manager Graham Potter who will have been delighted by the slick performance his side produced, particularly during the first half.

Christian Pulisic saw an effort ruled out after Havertz was judged to have fouled Adam Smith, while the German also spurned a second-half opportunity to extend Chelsea's lead.

The only negative in Potter's and Chelsea's evening came with the earlier-than-planned withdrawal of Reece James, seven minutes into the second period, on his return from the knee injury that ruled him out of the England squad for Qatar.

The 23-year-old lay on the turf with his hands on his head before receiving treatment and eventually walking off unaided.

While the Cherries improved after the break, and substitute Ryan Christie forced home goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga into a good save, they rarely looked capable of applying any late pressure to the hosts.

The result sees Chelsea move up to eighth in the table, six points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham with Bournemouth remaining in 14th.

Marcus Rashford continued his fine form as Manchester United dominated Nottingham Forest in the Premier League to show further signs of their revival.

The in-form England forward, who scored three goals at the World Cup, swept in a well-worked corner routine from Christian Eriksen to put United ahead.

Rashford then teed up Anthony Martial to fire in a shot which Forest keeper Wayne Hennessey should have saved.

Fred clipped in a late third as fifth-placed United sealed a deserved win.

Since losing 6-3 in the Manchester derby, Erik ten Hag's side have lost just once in eight league matches.

Team news - Meslier fit, Lewis starts for City
Leeds v Man City (20:00 GMT)

Illan Meslier is fit to start in goal for Leeds having recovered from a bout of glandular fever.

Tyler Adams, who captained the USA at the World Cup, is suspended after his sending off at Tottenham prior to the tournament in Qatar. This means Adam Forshaw starts in midfield. Sam Greenwood also starts and could well form part of a midfield three that Leeds have been using during friendlies in the World Cup break.

Wilfried Gnonto, who impressed in said friendlies, starts, with both Jack Harrison and Crysencio Summerville on the bench.

Leeds XI: Meslier, Kristensen, Struijk, Koch, Cooper, Forshaw, Roca, Greenwood, Gnonto, Rodrigo, Aaronson.

Rico Lewis makes his first Premier League start for Manchester City, with Kyle Walker on the bench, where we also find a number of other stars from the World Cup - Joao Cancelo, Aymeric Laporte, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden.

It doesn't stop Pep Guardiola naming a strong starting XI, though, including Erling Haaland starts up front in the city of his birth, against the club he supports.

Ex-Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who Pep Guardiola deemed to have returned from the World Cup overweight, is on the bench.

Defender Ruben Dias has a hamstring injury while Julian Alvarez has been given time off after Argentina's World Cup victory.

Man City XI: Ederson, Lewis, Akanji, Stones, Ake, Rodri, Gundogan, De Bruyne, Grealish, Haaland, Mahrez.

Too easy that for City once the first goal had gone in.

Erling Haaland became the fastest player to reach 20 Premier League goals in a season as Manchester City overcame a stubborn Leeds to reduce Arsenal's lead at the top of the table to five points.

Frustrated by a disciplined and determined home side and their own profligacy for much of the first half at Elland Road, City snatched the lead just before the break through Rodri's follow-up finish and then sped into the distance in a one-sided second half.

Having seen a couple of efforts saved early in the game, Haaland - playing in the city of his birth against the side he supports - did not celebrate his goals but showed little mercy in securing them to bring up his impressive tally in just his 14th game of the campaign.

He could not miss for his first, set up in front of an open goal by the unselfish Jack Grealish, who himself had missed a hat-trick of good opportunities in the first 45 minutes.

Grealish was the provider again for Haaland's second, which he slotted in from close range following a deflection to give Leeds too much of an deficit to overcome.

In keeping with their display, the home side refused to lie down and got a goal back through Pascal Struijk's header from a corner.

And they could have set up a grandstand finish had Joe Gelhardt's poked finish not trickled the wrong side of the post.

City, though, secured the win to move back up to second behind the Gunners and two points better off than third-placed Newcastle, both of whom won on Monday.

The relegation battle is no less intense, with Leeds in 15th place on 15 points and one of 11 teams separated by just eight points.

Man City 1-1 Everton

All over! Manchester City drop points at home and Everton get a crucial one against the champions.

Both sets of players look exhausted. They had to work for it.

Crystal Palace recovered after back-to-back Premier League defeats to finish 2022 on a high at Bournemouth, who were watched by new owner Bill Foley.

Palace had not registered a shot on target in their previous two games, but there was no subtlety about either goal, with both created by Michael Olise's pinpoint delivery from corners.

The opener came when Jordan Ayew was left virtually unmarked at the near post from Olise's left-wing delivery, leaving him the easy task of planting a downward header across goal and into the net.

The Eagles doubled their lead when Olise's delivery from the opposite side was driven perfectly into the path of Eberechi Eze, who had space on the edge of the area to blast the ball past Mark Travers.

With much of the game played in driving rain, Bournemouth struggled to find any fluency and created few clear-cut opportunities, although Dominic Solanke stung the palms of visiting goalkeeper Vicente Guaita after the break.

Manchester City missed the chance to move to within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal after Demarai Gray's stupendous finish earned Everton a battling 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

Gray's bolt from the blue breathed life into Frank Lampard's side and simultaneously scuppered City's title charge on the final day of 2022.

Erling Haaland made space for himself on 24 minutes to convert Riyad Mahrez's cross to make it an astonishing 21 Premier League goals in his first 15 appearances.

But Everton levelled with their first shot of the match in the second half as Demarai Gray regained his footing to cut inside Manuel Ajankji and find the far corner via the underside of Ederson's crossbar (64).

The result hands Arsenal the opportunity to move seven points clear of City when they face Brighton later on New Year's Eve, live on Sky Sports, while Everton stay in 16th, two points above the relegation zone after ending their four-game losing run in all competitions.

Arsenal 7 points clear now.

Surely they can't mess this up now.

Arsenal moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League after an entertaining victory at Brighton.

This result, allied to Manchester City's 1-1 draw with Everton, extends Arsenal's advantage heading in to 2023.

The visitors were cruising at 3-0 thanks goals by Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and Eddie Nketiah before Kaoru Mitoma pulled one back.

Gabriel Martinelli settled any nerves with Arsenal's fourth before Evan Ferguson added Brighton's second with his first league goal.

Mitoma had a second goal chalked off to deny the home fans a grandstand finish as Arsenal held on for a deserved three points.

David Moyes sack claims clarified with West Ham board reaching massive decision

David Moyes’ future as West Ham manager looks increasingly in peril after Friday’s 2-0 home defeat to Brentford left the Hammers lurking dangerously close to the relegation zone.

The Scot has performed wonders during his second spell at the London Stadium, taking the Hammers to the Europa League semi-finals last season. Their run in the competition only came to an end after a narrow loss to eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt. And with a little more luck, Moyes could even have led the Hammers to a first trophy in 42 years.

That exciting European run followed a season in which the Hammers had finished sixth and just two points shy of a Champions League place.

Last season, the Hammers also finished seventh to qualify for the Europa Conference League to reinforce their status in the Premier League’s top half.

However, little has gone right for Moyes and West Ham this season. Indeed, Friday’s 2-0 defeat to Brentford leaves the Hammers 17th in the Premier League, just a point clear of the relegation places.

And with only four wins from 17 games to their name, reports have indicated that Moyes could be dismissed if they lose their next outing, away to Leeds, on Wednesday. The situation at West Ham is certainly threatening to get toxic.

Indeed, per a report on Football Insider, West Ham’s owners David Sullivan and David Gold are ready to pull the trigger on Moyes’ reign.

<b>Spurs 0-2 Aston Villa</b>

Aston Villa increased the pressure on Tottenham manager Antonio Conte with victory at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

An error by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in his first game back since the World Cup allowed Emiliano Buendia to score before Douglas Luiz doubled the lead.

A lacklustre Spurs have now won only two of their past seven games and have fallen out of the Premier League top four.

Villa have won back-to-back away league games as they improve under Unai Emery.

It appeared this game would pit the two keepers who faced off in the 2022 World Cup final penalty shootout against each other, but Argentina's spot-kick hero Emiliano Martinez had to settle for a place on the Villa bench.

It was a poor game all round for returning finalists. Spurs' World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero was shown a yellow card in the first half - and fortunate not to get a second late on after barging Philippe Coutinho - while Lloris endured a shocking moment in the 50th minute.

He spilled Luiz's long-range effort and Ollie Watkins squared the rebound for Buendia to slam home.

Luiz started and finished the move for 2-0, sliding a pass to John McGinn before racing on to receive the return and chipping cutely past Lloris.

Nottingham Forest battled back to take a deserved point against Chelsea, who lost ground on the Premier League top four at a boisterous City Ground.

Chelsea's Raheem Sterling volleyed home from five yards after Wily Boly had flicked a cross onto his own bar.

Forest attacked with vigour in the second half and Morgan Gibbs-White crashed a stunning strike off the bar.

Serge Aurier showed fine composure when he controlled the ball on his chest and volleyed home the equaliser.

Chelsea, who have now only won successive league games once under Graham Potter since he was appointed on 8 September, climb above Brighton into eighth but are seven points behind Manchester United in fourth.

Forest go above Wolverhampton Wanderers into 18th and are only behind fourth-bottom West Ham United on goal difference.

Liverpool victory today vs Brentford will make things interesting as they will only be a point off top four. City still title favourites imo and they still got Arsenal to play twice to eat into their lead.

Bees for Europe!

Said it last week and sticking with it.

<b>Brentford 3-1 Liverpool</b>

Liverpool missed the chance to edge closer to the Premier League top four as Brentford punished their defensive frailties in a deserved victory at the Community Stadium.

In a desperate first half, Liverpool shipped two poor goals amid an inspired performance from the hosts.

The opener came when Ibrahima Konate deflected a corner into his own net after 19 minutes.

Liverpool were unable to deal with Brentford's set-pieces, conceding twice more from corners in the first half only for both goals to be ruled out for offside.

Moments after the second disallowed effort from Yoane Wissa, the Bees striker headed in after Liverpool had sloppily given the ball away.

A triple half-time change from a visibly frustrated Reds' manager Jurgen Klopp, including replacing captain Virgil van Dijk, had the desired effect and Liverpool pulled one back through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain within five minutes of the restart.

At that stage the momentum seemed to be with Liverpool, but Brentford weathered the storm.

With six minutes left, Bryan Mbeumo sealed an impressive success, brushing off Konate in pursuit of a long ball before slotting home.

Brentford are now unbeaten in six games - their best run in the top-flight for more than 80 years - and climb to seventh.

Liverpool, who would have been a point off fourth with a win, stay sixth and two points clear of the Bees.

Newcastle United frustrated Premier League leaders Arsenal to earn a 0-0 draw with a dogged display at Emirates Stadium.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw says the "belief and confidence" is back at Old Trafford after they stretched their winning run in all competitions to six games with a comfortable 3-0 victory over a hapless Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Brighton piled the pressure on Everton manager Frank Lampard with an emphatic 4-1 victory at Goodison Park.

Fulham continued their fine form as Aleksandar Mitrovic's first-half finish was enough to see off Leicester City 1-0 at the King Power Stadium.

Big win tonight for Man City at Chelsea.

That squad of City's is simply awesome.

Manchester City closed the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to five points with victory over injury-ravaged Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The reigning champions struggled in the first half before two of manager Pep Guardiola's substitutes combined to break the deadlock after 63 minutes, Riyad Mahrez turning in Jack Grealish's low cross at the far post.

Chelsea enjoyed the better of the first half despite adding both former City forward Raheem Sterling and Christian Pulisic to a lengthening injury list, substitute Carney Chukwuemeka hitting the post from the edge of the area.

Graham Potter will justifiably point to Chelsea's ill-luck with absentees but the bottom line is this defeat leaves them in the unaccustomed position of 10th, 10 points off the Champions League places.

City, meanwhile, will be happy to get three points despite being nowhere near their best and on a rare night when scoring machine Erling Haaland failed to hit the target.

<b>Premier League, EFL and FA chiefs hold 'positive' talks over game's future</b>

Senior figures from the three main football bodies in England have held what have been described as "positive, open and constructive" discussions about the future of the game.

For the first time, the respective chairs and chief executives of the Premier League, Football Association and Football League met on Friday.

The fixture calendar and an independent regulator were discussed.

Schedules will be squeezed further by the Champions League expansion in 2024.

Although there will not be such high-level representation at all future discussions, which are set to continue as a matter of urgency, they will return reasonably frequently, in a process that is set to take weeks or months to reach a definitive outcome.

The future of the EFL Cup, FA Cup replays and the Community Shield are all part of the discussions.

Klopp reiterates opposition to cup replays
With the government expected to present its White Paper - a formal plan setting out its proposals - for football regulation in the early weeks of this year, focus will be on the Premier League and the amount of money it is willing to distribute to the wider game.

The EFL has been looking for £300m but it is understood the Premier League is reluctant to meet such a figure.

However, the haggling over that issue is brought into sharp focus by the knowledge that Uefa's European competitions will change markedly from the 2024-25 campaign, when the Champions League group stage will be scrapped in favour of a 'Swiss style' competition, in which each of the 36 qualifiers play eight games against different opponents.

Those eight games will be played over 10 match-weeks. In addition, there will be one match-week of 'calendar exclusivity' for the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League.

If this system, announced by Uefa on 10 May 2022, is not changed, it will mean 12 midweeks being used for the 'initial stage' rather than the six pre-Christmas midweeks at present.

There is no space in the English calendar to accommodate this. In general, during campaigns unaffected by a winter World Cup, there are only two midweeks - in August - that are not used for Europe, EFL Cup or Premier League games.

'Spare' midweeks after Christmas are for FA Cup replays, EFL Cup ties and matches postponed because of weekend clashes with the EFL Cup final and FA Cup semi-finals.

Although the suggestion of scrapping the EFL Cup and FA Cup replays and moving the Community Shield to a mid-season slot has been raised, there is no unanimity amongst Premier League clubs on this.

While clubs who routinely qualify for Europe need to create gaps in their playing schedule, for those who do not, cup ties are an important revenue generator.

Marco Silva makes six changes from the Fulham side that began the 2-0 win at Hull in the FA Cup with starts for Bernd Leno, Kenny Tete, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson, Joao Palhinha and Willian.

With Aleksandar Mitrovic suspended, Carlos Vinicius starts up front.

Fulham XI: Leno, Tete, Adarabioyo, Ream, Robinson, De Cordova-Reid, Palhinha, Reed, Pereira, Willian, Vinicius.

Subs: Rodak, Kuzawa, Wilson, Cairney, Chalobah, Solomon, James, Harris, Diop.

Chelsea hand an instant debut to Portugal forward Joao Felix after he joined on a loan until the end of the season from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday for a £9.7m fee.

That's one of four changes from the 11 that began the 4-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday with Thiago Silva, Denis Zakaria and Cesar Azpilicueta all starting. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has recovered from a back injury and is among the substitutes.

Chelsea XI: Arrizabalaga, Hall, Koulibaly, Silva, Azpilicueta, Chalobah, Kovacic, Zakaria, Mount, Havertz, Felix.

Subs: Bettinelli, Badiashile, Cucurella, Jorginho, Gallagher, Ziyech, Chukwuemeka, Aubameyang, Datro Fofana.

Fulham up to 6th place after tonight's win over Chelsea. That's a fantastic achievement.

Joao Felix was sent off on his Chelsea debut as his new side lost a west London derby 2-1 at Fulham to increase the pressure on Blues boss Graham Potter.

Joao Felix, who only joined Chelsea on Wednesday in a £9.7m loan deal until the end of the season from Atletico Madrid, was shown a straight red card for a horrible lunge on defender Kenny Tete after 58 minutes.

It was 1-1 at the time, with Willian putting the hosts ahead against his former side in the first half, before Kalidou Koulibaly equalised early in the second.

But the 10 men of Chelsea could not hang on to a point as Carlos Vinicius headed in a 72nd-minute winner.

Wolves are set to sign Nice midfielder Mario Lemina for a fee believed to be about 11m euros (£9.7m).

The former Southampton player is scheduled to have a medical on Friday prior to completing the move.

The 29-year-old Gabon international joined Southampton in 2017 and his stint at the club included loan spells at Galatasaray and Fulham.

Lemina joined Nice in 2021 and has made 22 appearances for them this season, scoring once.

Wolves have pledged to bolster new manager Julen Lopetegui's squad, with up to six new signings expected this month, although not all will be regarded as regular starters.

The club have already brought in Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid, while other players on their radar include West Ham defender Craig Dawson, Manchester United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Paris St-Germain's attacking midfielder Pablo Sarabia, who spent last season on loan with Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

Wolves are 19th in the Premier League and have a crucial game against fourth-bottom West Ham at Molineux on Saturday.

Leon Bailey had a hand in both goals as Aston Villa started the Premier League weekend with victory over a slightly unlucky Leeds.

The Jamaican winger finished off a quick counter-attack after a great run by Boubacar Kamara in just the third minute to put the hosts ahead.

That was Villa's only shot in the first half, with Leeds having two penalty appeals rejected, a Rodrigo goal disallowed for offside and missing big chances.

Villa debutant Alex Moreno denied Rodrigo with a goalline clearance and keeper Emiliano Martinez pulled off a wonderful reaction stop to deny Jack Harrison from close range.

Unai Emery's hosts were better in the second half and they got the goal to make them more comfortable - thanks to the video assistant referee.

Bailey's shot was saved by Illan Meslier with Emiliano Buendia heading the rebound over the grounded goalkeeper.

The goal was ruled out for offside but the VAR told referee Michael Oliver that Buendia was clearly onside - and it was given.

Leeds were given hope in the final 10 minutes though when Wilfried Gnonto cut the ball back for Patrick Bamford, making his return after two-and-a-half months out with a groin injury, to slam home.

But they could not find an equaliser and remain only two points above the relegation zone, with Villa eight points further up the table in 11th.

It was not a perfect night for Villa, who lost left-back Lucas Digne and striker Ollie Watkins to injury in the first half.

Halftime:

Man Utd 0 - 0 Man City

Been a drab match so far. Definitely not 9 goals in this one.

1-1 Fernandes, rashford was clearly interfering with ball.

Draw is good

United will be just 6 points behind Arsenal if it stays like this.

FT: Man Utd 2-1 Man City

There still protests from Manuel Akanji at full-time as he chats to the referee when they head off the pitch.

Jack Grealish comes across to share his thoughts too, waving his arms about angrily.

Marcus Rashford is soaking up the celebrations from the fans in the centre.

United will go to Emirates full of confidence now next week.

Brighton will be tough away, they could beat us with our current form. You've been missing for the last 15 years :)

You still dont have the confidence in your team to say you will win the league so far in. :)

3-0 Brighton - Holiday time again for you, enjoy going back into hiding.

FULL-TIME
Brighton 3-0 Liverpool

A fantastic performance and result from Brighton, who fully deserve the plaudits at the Amex.

Woeful from Liverpool, who were second best throughout after another concerning performance.

Utd v City draw

Spurs 1-2 City

Tonight

Villa v Leeds James shaz619 should be a spicy clash. :)

It always is a spicy one isn't it :yk3 Leeds gave it their all but couldn't stop our golden shovel and Martinez

Quite a good game to be fair, very competitive.

Think Villa deserved to get over the line in the end.

FULL-TIME

FULL-TIME
Chelsea 1-0 Crystal Palace

All over!

A much-needed win for Chelsea and Graham Potter as Kai Havertz's second-half goal is enough to take the three points.

It was a nervous end to the game but the hosts did enough.
