Premier League club Brentford to sell stake at £400m valuation

The owner of Brentford Football Club has clinched a deal to sell a minority stake in the Premier League side to new investors at a valuation of roughly £400m.

Sky News has learnt that an agreement that will involve current owner Matthew Benham offloading a chunk of his holding to Gary Lubner - the wealthy businessman who ran Autoglass-owner Belron - is expected to be announced as early as Tuesday.

Matthew Vaughn, the Hollywood film-maker whose credits include Layer Cake and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, is also expected to invest in Brentford as part of the deal, The Athletic reported last month.

Further details of the transaction were unclear on Monday night, although one insider speculated that it could ultimately see as much as 25% of the club changing hands.

If confirmed, it would underline the continuing interest from wealthy investors in top-flight English clubs.

FA Cup winners Crystal Palace have seen a minority stake being bought by Woody Johnson, the New York Jets-owner, in the last few weeks, with that deal hastened by the implications of former shareholder John Textor's simultaneous ownership of a stake in French club Lyon.

Sky News revealed in February 2024 that Mr Benham had hired bankers at Rothschild to market a stake in Brentford.

4 weeks until the start of another great season!

Liverpool aiming for a record 21st English League Title!

Arsenal have a very good squad now esp a solid spine from Keeper, CB, CM, Striker. However their manager is still suspect.

Chelsea are looking good too with their Club World Cup win and some good signings.

City will be up there again.

I see a case of "Rising from the Phoenix " when it comes to UTD. I am quietly confident we could surprise alot of teams this coming season. For me a domestic Cup win and a top 6 finish will be deemed as success.

Its a fair expectation. Utd have to use this season(without Europe) to improve the current squad and build a bond with the manager. Old Trafford needs to become a tough place to visit, the amount of losses at home in recent seasons is extraordinary! Im looking forward to see how Amad does, I think he has serious quality.

I don't think they will, still think they have some of the same issues from last season

Whilst I don't think they will have a run like 1 win in 11 like last season I don't see them properly challenging for the league

Liverpool favourites followed by Arsenal and Chelsea for me

I see Arsenal finally Getting the Monkey off the back and winning the Premier League Title. The defensive stability with the potential quality additions, I see the Gooners being very hard to beat.

League opener halted after Semenyo reports racist abuse

The Premier League opener between Liverpool and Bournemouth was stopped in the first half after Cherries forward Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused by someone in the crowd.

Referee Anthony Taylor stopped play before a Liverpool corner in the 29th minute before talking to both managers on the touchline.

Liverpool and Bournemouth captains Virgil van Dijk and Adam Smith were then called over to the benches to be briefed before the match resumed.

An anti-discrimination message was read out to the crowd inside Anfield once the half-time whistle had blown.

It comes after Tottenham forward Mathys Tel was the subject of racist abuse on social media after being one of two Spurs players to miss in their Super Cup penalty shootout defeat by Paris St-Germain on Wednesday.

Got him in my FPL team, at only £5.5m he is a bargain
He will do well at City, as will Cherki. Much better than midfield signings they made last season.

Your lot played well today, clearly either need isak back in side or wissa or another striker

Yeah it was a good performance overall, especially first half we restricted them to zero shots

The lack of a proper striker showed and ultimately is what cost us all 3 points

But a point away to Villa isn't a bad result, we just need to make sure we get a striker in before the Liverpool game

Yeah I think if your creating that number of chances in most games, someone like Wissa or another even mateta would be scoring loads. Those should be strikers that you should look to go after.

I think Villa will find it tougher as PSR restrictions seem to be affecting them more

I was surprised at how flat Villa were, obviously going down to 10 was difficult for them but the 65 mins before were not much better

Think they have only signed Guessand, who I rate, though for some reason he didn't get any minutes today

Losing Rashford, acensio and Ramsey was always going to be tough for them. Other then watkins and Rogers they will lack fire power now.

City are looking pretty at wolves today.

Wolves and west ham are likely to struggle again this season

Them two along with Brentford are in for a tough season

I think Sunderland will stay up out of the promoted sides, maybe Leeds too, then two from those named could go down

Though I rate Bowen highly, he could keep them up almost on his own

West ham and wolves have got progressively worse. Wolves have lost most of their best players

Bowen would have left West ham ages ago, only reason he has is he's married to Danny dyers daughter and is settled in London.

I think if Brentford lose wissa they are in trouble as well.

Stadium ban for man bailed in Semenyo racism probe

A man who was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo during the opening match of the Premier League season has been banned from every football stadium in the UK as part of his bail conditions.

The Cherries' Friday game against Liverpool at Anfield was briefly halted in the 29th minute after Semenyo flagged it up to the referee.

A 47-year-old man from Liverpool, who was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence, has been conditionally bailed, Merseyside Police said.

The conditions include a ban on attending any regulated football match in the UK and not going within one mile of a designated football stadium.

Graham Potter will be getting sacked very soon

Chelsea smashing West ham 5-1

Caicedo will go from strength to strength. Towards end of last season he was showing his incredible quality.

This season he could go on to be the Incredible talent that he is. Sky's the limit for this guy

Similar problems to last season for City, right back a problem, Haaland doesn't do enough and they are so vulnerable on transitions

It's exactly why I give them little chance of winning the league

Pep has Haaland playing in a certain way. Haaland at Dortmund was complete.

Defence is still awful when defending on counter attack.. even with improvements in midfield their Defence looks like a glass jaw. I thought they might improve in Defence but they haven't 🤣

Walker big miss. He was deadly against getting countered

The entire defence lacks pace now. Ait Nouri looked good until he got injured.

City will keep playing the high line so they need to improve on tracking runners as today was a shambles

A fit Rodri does give them the balance in Transitions.

Evanilson's early goal earned dominant Bournemouth a richly deserved victory at Tottenham, whose impressive Premier League start under Thomas Frank came to an unceremonious end.

The Cherries were frustrated to be knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brentford in midweek but were full of energy and invention against Spurs, doing to their opponents what Frank's side inflicted on Manchester City last weekend.

As they did at home to Wolves last Saturday, Bournemouth took the lead with their first attack of the game as Marco Senesi picked out Evanilson, whose low shot looped off Cristian Romero and over goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

The visitors should have been out of sight early in the second half after creating a succession of opportunities to add to their advantage, but a combination of poor finishing and smart goalkeeping helped keep Spurs in the game.

Antoine Semenyo headed narrowly over the crossbar five minutes after Evanilson's opener, while David Brooks was denied by the crossbar early in the second half.

The hosts' first shot on target - a Lucas Bergvall drive from the edge of the box in the 68th minute - flew straight at Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, while Mathys Tel's sweetly struck volley in second-half stoppage time was the closest they came to salvaging a point they scarcely deserved.

The win moves Bournemouth level on points with Spurs, with both teams having won two of their opening three league matches.

Last season City lost to Spurs comfortably at home, they also lost to Brighton away after leading 1-0, so this season the exact same has happened

City are going to do well to challenge for a CL place, they are massively off the pace for winning the league

Don't think Pep wins another league with them, he'll walk away at the end of this season I think

City play United and Arsenal next.

The manchester Derby is a huge relegation 6 pointer now 🤭

Pep might be sacked before end of September

Consecutive defeats for Manchester City

Brajan Gruda came off the bench to score an 89th-minute goal to give Brighton their first win of the Premier League season, while condemning Manchester City to back-to-back defeats.

The German attacking midfielder finished calmly to seal a comeback success after he rounded James Trafford, who had made a brilliant save to deny Jan Paul van Hecke moments earlier.

City had taken a first-half lead as Erling Haaland marked his 100th Premier League appearance with his 88th goal for Pep Guardiola's side.

But after a Matheus Nunes handball inside the box, James Milner converted from the penalty spot against his former club to become the Premier League's second oldest scorer - behind Teddy Sheringham - at the age of 39 years and 239 days.

It was Milner's first Brighton goal and first in the league since Boxing Day, 2019, when he scored in Liverpool 4-0 win against Leicester City - also from the penalty spot.

The Seagulls continued to threaten after the equaliser when Gruda struck the winner with a minute remaining.

City, who lost 2-0 to Spurs last weekend, only have three points from as many games while Brighton have four points after a first win that came under dramatic circumstances.

West Ham earn first points of season

West Ham struck three times in the final six minutes to ease the pressure on under-fire West Ham boss Graham Potter as they earned a deserved win at Nottingham Forest.

Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta's penalty and Callum Wilson's first goal for the club earned the Hammers their first victory after what had looked to have been a damaging start to the season.

Potter will have been comforted by the Hammers' solidity in a forgettable first half given their vulnerability in previous games.

They competed well but lacklustre Forest never stretched them and the visitors created the only opening, Paqueta testing Sels.

Underwhelming Forest failed to make a dent against their organised opponents. Goalkeeper Sels kept the hosts in the game after the break, denying Niclas Fullkrug and Wilson before Bowen's goal and Paqueta's penalty - after Crysencio Summerville was fouled - and Wilson won it.

Boss Nuno Espirito Santo will now hold talks with Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis as he looks to get clarity on the direction of the club after speaking out on what he viewed as slow transfer progress.

What next for these teams?

Nottingham Forest go to Arsenal [13 September] and Burnley [20 September] when they return from the international break, before their European return at Real Betis in the Europa League on 24 September.

After the international break, West Ham host two London derbies with Tottenham [13 September] and Crystal Palace [20 September] coming to the London Stadium.

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno set to depart

Nottingham Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is set to leave the club, according to well-placed sources.

BBC Sport understands the decision has been taken by the Forest hierarchy, including owner Evangelos Marinakis.

The position of the Portuguese coach had been uncertain for two weeks since publicly declaring his relationship with Marinakis had deteriorated.

Talks are under way over Nuno's replacement, with an appointment imminent.

Postecoglou in line to replace Nuno as Forest boss

Nuno left his position as head coach at the City Ground late on Monday night and the club are advancing with their efforts to land a replacement.

Postecoglou arrived at Forest's training ground on Tuesday.

The 60-year-old was sacked by Tottenham at the end of last season following a dismal Premier League season when they finished 17th.

However, the Australian led Spurs to a historic Europa League victory at the end of the season to end the club's long-running trophy drought.

Forest currently sit 10th in the Premier League table after their opening three games of the season.

After 21 months in charge, Nuno's last match in charge was a 3-0 defeat by West Ham before September's international break.

The 51-year-old Portuguese coach took charge of Forest in December 2023 after the dismissal of Steve Cooper and helped preserve their top-flight status.

Last term he guided the club to seventh in the Premier League - their highest finish since 1994-95 - as they qualified for Europe for the first time in three decades.

BBC Sport understands Forest's players have been caught by surprise by Nuno's departure.

Many of them are on international duty and not due back for training until later this week.

But word spread, with some players hearing the news from other members of the squad.

It is thought Postecoglou will be appointed before Forest's trip to Arsenal on Saturday.

He would become the eighth permanent manager since Evangelos Marinakis took over the club in May 2017.

TODAY'S FIXTURES (13-09-2025)

Martin Zubimendi scored his first Arsenal goals as the Gunners comfortably beat Nottingham Forest to give Ange Postecoglou a defeat in his first game in charge.

Former Tottenham manager Postecoglou had not beaten Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta in the previous four matches they had faced each other in, with three losses and one draw.

That record did not seem likely to change as, although Forest showed promise in some of their play, Arsenal took charge of the match.

Arsenal's Noni Madueke, again starting on the right in place of the injured Bukayo Saka, was impressive as he seemed able to beat Morato every time he had the ball, while his inswinging corners caused problems for the Forest defence.

It was from one of these corners that Arsenal took the lead. Chris Wood headed one of Madueke's deliveries to the edge of the box and Zubimendi hit a powerful volley past Matz Sels with a slight deflection from Murillo.

Morgan Gibbs-White had the best chance for Forest when he shot wide from inside the penalty area following a counter-attack.

The Gunners doubled their lead one minute into the second half when Eberechi Eze, making his first start for Arsenal, teed up Viktor Gyokeres to tap in from close range.

Zubimendi then added his second with a header when he got on the end of substitute Leandro Trossard's cross.

Arteta will be delighted with the performance his side put in, with a number of key players out injured and captain Martin Odegaard having to be replaced with what looked like a shoulder injury in the first half.

And some thought Arteta was a genius for signing him. Sums up the state of his fan club.
Zinchenko and Jesus were high impact signings that propelled a top 4 team into title contenders.

Just because the team outgrew them and left them behind doesn’t mean they were poor signings in hindsight.

In his first season, Zinchenko’s technical qualities on the ball were pivotal to Arsenal building from the back.

He played a key role that season and in spite of his defensive vulnerabilities, he was an upgrade on Tierney who was a generic LB and offered no attacking threat.

However, the signings of Timber and Calafiori made him surplus to requirements as they offer a lot on the ball and are much stronger defensively.

Zinchenko is by far the worst defender and the biggest fraud I've personally seen in the PL era, so we can agree to disagree.

He played a key role that season and in spite of his defensive vulnerabilities, he was an upgrade on Tierney who was a generic LB and offered no attacking threat.

Ironically Tierney would've been the best choice of LB in this season, stylistically speaking - given that Eze is a hybrid CAM/winger, who likes to cut inside. The Scotsman is a traditional LB, so he would have been able to occupy the vacant gap on the left hand side.

However, the signings of Timber and Calafiori made him surplus to requirements as they offer a lot on the ball and are much stronger defensively.

Assuming everyone in the squad was fully fit, I could name 6 superior options at LB from last seasaon:

Calafiori
MLS
Timber
Kiwior
Tierney
Tomiyasu

Zinchenko was miles behind each one of them in defence.

You could argue there are at least 7 superior options if you were to include Bukayo Saka, who started his Arsenal career playing at LB prior to his conversion as a Right Wing Forward.

'A change is necessary' - West Ham sack boss Potter

West Ham have sacked head coach Graham Potter with the club struggling in 19th place in the Premier League.

The Englishman, who was appointed in January, picked up just three points from the opening five Premier League games.

The Hammers said they "believe that a change is necessary in order to help improve the team's position in the Premier League as soon as possible".

The club added: "Results and performances over the course of the second half of last season and the start of the 2025-26 season have not matched expectations."

Potter had been preparing for Monday night's game at Everton and fulfilled his media duties on Friday.

West Ham appoint Nuno after sacking Potter

West Ham have appointed former Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo as head coach after sacking Graham Potter.

Nuno, 51, has signed a three-year contract with the Hammers and will take charge of his first match on Monday away at Everton in the Premier League.

Potter was dismissed on Saturday morning after only eight months in charge, with the club 19th in the table.

Nuno joins West Ham after being sacked on 9 September by Forest, who he guided to seventh in the Premier League last season - their highest finish since 1994-95.

"I am very pleased to be here and very proud to be representing West Ham United," he said.

"My objective is to work hard to get the very best from the team and ensure that we are as competitive as we possibly can be. The work has already started and I am looking forward to the challenge that is ahead."

Nuno joins West Ham shortly after a 21-month stint at the City Ground, where he was sacked only three games into this season.

He took his first training session in east London on Saturday afternoon before the club's match at Everton on Monday.

West Ham said Nuno will be assisted in the interim by academy coaches Mark Robson, Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine, with a further announcement on his coaching and backroom staff to be made in due course.

The Hammers took only three points from their opening five league games this season under Potter.

After dismissing the 50-year-old, West Ham said they believed "a change is necessary in order to help improve the team's position in the Premier League as soon as possible".

They added: "Results and performances over the course of the second half of last season and the start of the 2025-26 season have not matched expectations."

In a statement via the League Managers Association, Potter said: "I am incredibly disappointed to be leaving West Ham, particularly without being able to achieve what we set out to achieve at the start of our journey in east London.

"I do, however, fully acknowledge that the results have just not been good enough up to now."
