First Ashes Test: Aus V Eng [Day 2]

Panesar should have been there but Flintoff need Harmisson more to take advantage of the bounce and his height. they can trouble the batsman

Problem is, Harmy left his radar in England.

Did that really come off the pad? On the slo mo theres definitely a noise. On the replays I've seen so far on Sky its inconclusive. It would be nice to see a snicko or a "super slo-mo".

Freddie is head and shoulders above the rest of his bowling teammates at the moment eh. It's the Freddie Flintoff and the Seven Dwarfs show at the moment.

To thihnk Aussies still have someone like Jaques waiting to come into this squad!!!

An another note, Lee and McGrath will have been encouraged by watching Flintoff's display.

Clarke looking all over the place, edged for 4 but that would've been out if there had been another slip in place.

Freddie got a standing ovation from the Gabba crowd after his last over which removed Hussey.

Harmy back into the attack. Let's see what he can do against an out-of-touch-looking Clarke.

I reckon Harmison will accidentally get a wicket soon

Cheers from my Cricinfo colleagues as the 12312231th mention of Harmison being underbowled is made by the Sky commentary team

English slips must be very sharp today ... not for edges but for those wides coming down from harmlessone :)) :))

Lunch: Aus 427-4

Ponting 177* / Preddie Plintopp3-64

Giles being treated like a part timer.....he's mostly bowling an over or 2 before intervals!

ayyyy don't forget he's played for his batting :))

IIRC IND scored over 700 at the SCG and still couldn't win...i don't think AUS would make the same mistake

Wouldn't aus want to just put a mamoth total and than have two and half days to get them out twice.

India scored that in their 2nd innings though - they didn't need anything near that much, and they didn't give their spinners enough time to bowl us out. I reckon we'd have lost that test if Ganguly had declared earlier. But looking at what Flintoff and occasionally Hoggard, and Pietersen, have been able to make the ball do on this wicket, I think that we'll definitely have a result.

Even allowing for the England seam bowlers ineptitude (FF apart), the pitch looks pretty flat. Potentially there's no reason why Englands batsmen can't do some damage. I guess the major risk is Warne on the 4th/5th days when the pitch is expected to crack open a bit.

won't be that easy to ontinuously bowl for 2 and a half days in this weather and on this flat pictch

The WACA pitch that led to the draw between SA and OZ last year was much flatter than this pitch and had very little bounce as well. And the SCG is generally a pretty flat pitch. I don't think this pitch is flat in a subcontinental sense - just because a pitch doesn't have lateral movement doesn't mean it's flat. It has bounce and carry, but little for the swingers and seamers.

SUnny Gavaskar once said that it's quite easy to bat in AUS...all you need to do is get used to the conditions but the problem is that it takes 2 months to get used to the conditions!

now that's just so weird ...that's like saying that the Multan pitch was offering steep bounce and a loads of side ways movement!

however i know you are right because i recently read a report that WACA groudsman was receiving a bit of criticism for producing some really flat pitches in the domestic games

what I have heard of WACA is that they are running out of the soil that was used to make the pitch and the goundsman that ruled there for years retired and there is a new one who started 2-3 years ago or something

Here come the players and it'll be Hoggard to open after lunch. And there's a girl in the crowd with a rather fetching yellow t-shirt, emblazoned with "Howzat" on it. No comment.

The curator wasn't doing it on purpose though, it was just because the type of clay that he used didn't turn out as expected. But yes, he was getting heaps of criticism from everyone, because the WACA is a unique ground and should retain its character.

I'm really keen to see how Clarke responds to the threat of keeping his place - Langer responded to the Jaques challenge with a blazing 82. How will Pup respond?

Actually I didn't remember this game either, but looking at the scoreboard, you didn't serious think India could have won this game if they declared earlier?

can Aus really take Eng out quickly if after the first spell Eng don't lose any wickets? Aus is playing with only four bowlers and the fifth can only be Clarke. I think they will miss Watson if no early break though

Aus's big three count for 4 bowlers in another side

I think they should be able to manage 20 wickets between those four bowlers. Even Warnie by himself would be enough to clean up the poms.

6666666666 for Clarke, deposits Giles into the stands.

Any plans to head to the ground and watch the match over the weekend mate?

LOL at the plaintive appeal from Farmer Giles. :)))

It's only the big 2 really. Lee is overrated in Test cricket IMO.

Well working today, but might be some chance on the weekend. But from what I hear tickets for weekend are a bit hard to get.

I agree somewhat, but he's still an attacking weapon. He might give away a few runs, but still manages to pick up wickets.

Stuart Clark will probably do a bit of damage on this pitch as well, as he's the type that just bowls straight and will be looking at those cracks.

44444444 for Pup, smashes Giles over to the long-off boundary.

I agree...we need these unique pitches...makes the game far more interesting! BTW did you know PAK have defeated AUS in all 4 ODIs played at the WACA :O

PlanetPakistan said:
does anyone know how many runs Ponting has scored this year?

About 1200 I think.

4/450, Ponting 183, Clarke 27.

4444444444444 for Ponting, 191 now after 2 boundaries.

I wouldn't be surprised - Pak have the pace attack to enjoy playing at the WACA. That's why I was so surprised at the result in the Test there in 2004, particularly after Akhtar's blazing start.

Last time Ponting got a double century (v Ind) - Aus LOST!
