Bruised Pakistan seek early acclimatisation

Pakistan suffered a 5-0 defeat against Australia, but their past success against England, including in the 2017 Champions Trophy, should put them in good stead to put that behind and tune up for the World Cup.

Overview

England v Pakistan
1st ODI
The Oval, London
Wednesday, 8 May; 1300hrs local time, 12:00pm GMT

The 5-0 rout they suffered at the hands of a rejuvenated Australian side will be heavily weighing on their minds as Pakistan look to handle early season conditions. Making that job harder is the fact that they are up against the No.1-ranked ODI team in the world, at their home. They can, however, take solace from the fact that two years ago, they had eased past England in similar circumstances in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy. On a related note, the series will offer the last chance for the one of the heroes of that event, Mohammad Amir, to sneak into the World Cup squad.

England, on the other hand, are coming off victories over Ireland in a solitary ODI in Dublin, and then against Pakistan in the one-off T20I last week. That, along with their usual level of comfort in these conditions, will leave them high on confidence. Can they now use that to their advantage in the ODIs and tune up for the World Cup, which will be played in the same format?

Key players

Jofra Archer (England): The all-rounder has played only two international games so far, but has already impressed with fantastic displays of bowling. He was particularly brilliant in the solitary T20I, throttling Pakistan by dismissing two set half-centurions in the 16th over. Eoin Morgan, the captain, has said he expects more of the same, and this series could very well be the stepping stone to Archer's World Cup ambitions.

Fakhar Zaman (Pakistan): Zaman had a sub-par series against Australia this year. His performances were a far cry from those of last year, when he scored 875 runs in 17 games. But with two fifties and a century in four games, Zaman's past record in England should hold promising signs for his ability to turn it around before the World Cup.

Conditions

There is a 60% chance of rain through the morning, with thunderstorms forecast for the afternoon. If the rains descend, this could become a start-stop affair. The last ODI played here was in June 2018, when England bowled out Australia for 214 and then struggled to chase down the total.

Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Chris Jordan, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Pakistan: Sarfaraz Ahmed (c), Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abid Ali, Babar Azam, Haris Sohail, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez, Imad Wasim, Yasir Shah, Hasan Ali, Faheem Ashraf, Junaid Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Amir, Asif Ali

Are we having a match?

I thought it would be raining all day.

You know it's a sad time when Pakistan fans are more excited about rain, than the prospect of Pakistan playing :))

Depressing weather since last weekend. It’s like playing cricket in October

One f the weakest Pakistan I have ever seen. Apart from Babar there is no proper batsman and bowling is below average.

So like CT17. This WC is also likely to be very much effected by Rain. I hope not

Cricinfo says "12.39pm Pakistan warming up. A few throwdowns etc. England have the football out. It is all happening out there."

As long as we don't bat first under cloudy condition otherwise it will be a very low scoring one sided match.

It's looking aright after 3 pm UK time . .

Both Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan should oppose playing during Ramadan. Very disappointing!!! One month and we cannot sacrifice.

Lol! All Muslims should also ask for a month long leave from work during Ramadan every year, right?

Most work place you can work while fasting but you cannot play competitive sports while fasting. There is no excuse if we cannot utilize this bless month. But people have their own view.

Agree with you their... Iv never seen a match being places on xmas day so why schedule a match for a muslim playing team in Ramadhan.. Even WC a few of pks match will take place in Ramadhan. Im sure the very low turnout of pak fans to these 5 odis will give a signal to icc not to arrange any matches in Ramadhan

Match starts at 2.15pm. 47 overs a side.

Toss at 1.45.

No, Ramadan is part of our life - you have to do your prayer along with your jobs & other responsibilities. One thing we often forget is that the spirit of Ramadan is not to stop your life & spend time in mosque. Prophet (PBUH) even fought wars during Ramadan.

In Bangladesh, there was a cult culture of closing schools & universities for 40 days - and many BD students actually lost valuable 6 months for international studies for that (those who could enter in fall had to wait for spring sessions or other way) - it didn’t help Islam much at all. Here in Canada we did job in June July after finishing tarabih at 12:45, then wake up at 2:30 for seheri ... and I took it that my office time is also part of ibadat..... a group of people pray whole night and sleep in day between 6 am to 2 pm ..... and they can do that because Canadian govt. is sponsoring their bills ..... I am sure Allah knows better, who is doing what Ebadat.

These are pro cricketers- their bread & butter comes from playing cricket. If they can’t manage workload during Ramadan, they’ll make that up (1 is to 1, not 60) in their free time. I don’t know what mufties will say about it, but I follow my own rule and back that if I am wrong All mighty will pardon me.

Bristol and leeds odis failing to sell out for the odis. Nottingham london and southampton odis 98% tickets sold

England to bowl first.

Pitch has some moisture and looks to have some grass cover.

Toss time! Eoin Morgan wins, and England will bowl first, with the expectation of more rain.

Is Mohammed Hafeez fit? I’d rather have hafeez over ashraf any day of the week

Asif Ali at 6 :))

This is the same line up that got thrashed in the Asia Cup + Imad and Haris.

Imad for Nawaz and Haris for Malik

England team is too good i am afraid..but to have Asif Ali playing is beyond me..WE have hafeez..malik and shadab who havent played for like one year to come back i dont think this is good world cup prep at all

coming back to PP after long time .... hope I brought some luck Lets go Pakistan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:akhtar:akhtar

Fantastic decision to open with Babar. Some of us including me have been wanting this. Hoping to see it work out.

People been asking Babar to open in ODI if he does it today fans will complain.
second its just the playing XI order can be changed.... match haven't started and criticism started :salute

Doubt that Babar will open. Probably just in the same order as it was in the last game. Lazy to change the form.

In T20 we won the toss and made a bad call to bat first and here we have lost the toss. The closest we came to beating Aus was in last two matches where we were chasing.

Now hopefully we can put in a decent score and then defend it which we havent done in a long time.

Maybe they are finding a reason to kick Imam out.. Babar to open and later Hafeez/Malik come in for Imam

Hopefully, if that means its going to get better results for our team.

You do realize that both Imad and Harris are massive upgrades over the two you mentioned?

Babar is an opener , I think its the step in right direction but pakistan can not afford imam ul haq at number 3 either when you have haris sohail.
