Game of Thrones
I think the white walkers are a direct inspiration from scripture of Gog and Magog (Yajooj Majooj in Arabic).

The wall is clearly an inspiration from the Quranic chapter titled the Cave, where the story of Yajooj Majooj is discussed and a righteous king builds a wall that the likes of which has never been built before to protect the common folk from the unruly tribe.

Interestingly, Yajooj Majooj have been likened to globalization and climate change. One of the more signs is they will drink up all the water from the lakes. Some have linked this as a clear metaphor for the impact of globalization and climate change.

I had the same feeling about it, but didn't want to sound like the guy who links everything to Islamic scripture. You have pointed a very good example from "Game of Thrones". One more thing from the Islamic scripture that Gog and Magog cannot be beaten and only God will take care off Gog and Magog at the end. So it will be interesting to see how wild walkers are defeated in the next season. Shaping up nicely for the sixth season.

I am dejected for the loss of Jon Snow though. A lot of killing and many important characters getting killed in last episode may have revived the show.

Actually had a Game of Thrones season 1-5 marathon this week...time off before I start work...

Enjoyable simply for how it looks at the machinations of power...haven't read the books and wasn't too happy with the final episode...

SPOILERS

I think the Dorne arc was a bit rubbish tbh...Myrcelas death wasnt shocking simply cos she was no-one worth caring about...i guess the only effect it has is we now know there will be a war now...

Tried to fit a lot into the final episode and one bit that was lacking is the battle for Winterfell...nothing shown really and the manner of his death was too convenient...

I liked the Arya part...her getting her vengeance was satisfying...

The Jon Snow death was very sudden...although i sensed something was wrong when Ollie called him...with it being the last couple of minutes it had that impending doom feeling about it...

The Deny arc was dry this episode...

The best part though was Cersei's walk of atonement...i actually felt sorry for her and even hope she gets her revenge...the fact we see the full work makes it that much more effective...and its pretty horrifying to know that this was actually a real punishment and not something Martin made up...siding with religious fanatics always come back to bite you ;) ...

5 seasons in 5 days...best episode has to be the Red Wedding one...

Something to do for the people who are waiting another year. Read theories like R+L=J, Cleanganbowl, the Grand North Conspiracy, etc

So George RR Martin, how does it feel to be the most hated person in this world?

One question for book readers.. where is the Hound these days?

I know for a fact that in GoT you cannot assume any one is dead until who see them burned/buried..

It is likely that he was saved by a sparrow (the religious guys with the stars on the forehead). You see a person like him in a Brienne chapter.

GoT has done great at the Emmy's this year. Best drama, best supporting actor, best writer :14:

Is it really?

Does it have the character variations, the surprising twists, screenplay, quality of acting? If it does i will give it a go.

Yeah, it's only outmatched when it comes to production values. GOT was great at the start but now I can't put up with all the filler content despite moments of brilliance in between; with Vikings there is consistency when it comes to its characters and meaningful storylines; the twists are not excessive either and carry great importance when they do happen.

Ok thanks, I'll try season 1.

It was also created by the History Channel in the UK and the content is generally pretty accurate. If you're interested in Scandenavian culture and history it will add to your enjoyment as it did for me.

Vikings is inferior to GoT in every single aspect. Don't really know what people see in that show. If you want something like GoT, watch BBC's The Last Kingdom which tells the same story as Vikings but in a more interesting way.

Vikings ending last season was pretty epic must say.

I see not the living but the dead will conquer PARIS! EPIC walk back from Ragnar and Bjorn's epic signal to the Vikings to take the city. Goddamnit.

I only watched the first season BUT I found Vikings to be a little dull, perhaps I got too familiar with Spartacus which, despite riddled with sex and gore was hugely entertaining.

I'd say it's as good as GoT's first season. It's also based on a book series but, other than historical inaccuracies in terms of weapons and clothes, it's grounded in reality (no dragons, no magic,...) so, if you like GoT for the fantasy elements then probably not.

Thanks. Not fanstasy elements but good story, hero/ or a side u can root for good costumes and cinematography among other things. Since GOT i want to watch series like that. I will try this.

Apples and Oranges.

GOT is a complete drama. It has everything. Vikings is more concentrated on the same characters but every episode is intriguing somehow and the war scenes are usually epic.

No but seen some clips of it on youtube. Seems like too much of sex. Also i don't like that Xena Lady for some reason so i just skipped. Have u seen Da Vinci Demons.? Have see u seen Borgias. I saw the jeremy irons one throughly enjoyed it. I would recommend it to you but i don't know your taste/preference in serials.

I've not seen any of them but I'll keep them in mind when I get a chance.

You should watch the two seasons of Rome then. The costumes and cinematography are on par with GoT, the story maybe better.

I have watched rome. Thanks for the recommend. Don't think story is better. GOT is truly remarkable. The wait for next season of GOT is too long

My main problem is that the source material doesn't feel organic, too many tropes and anti-tropes, types and anti-types. It never lets you forget that it's genre fiction destined for that genre's fan which is why, before the show, only ya fanatsy fans read it. I tend to prefer the plot of Rome, at least the first season since the second suffered from the set burning down. But GoT is better in pretty much every other way.

Great show which will unfortunately end after the third season; at first I didn't like it but it grew on me and the premise was pretty good. BBC's Atlantis is another decent show, the 1st season was not great but the 2nd one was so much better; they cancelled the series despite the excellent ratings am not sure why probably just swapped it for The Last Kingdom.

I had read good reviews for da vinci demons and watched it. But i could not go beyond 3 episodes. Got bored and stopped watching it. Have u seen the ******* executioner? How is last kingdom..?

Trust me it gets better, the same happened to me :)) but when I made a commitment to it was worth it in the end. I've not seen the B...executioner :))) best title for a tv series ever; dashing_man watches that maybe he could tell you more. And I've not watched Last Kingdom but it's based on the Vikings endymion248 likes it so its probably good

Vikings have better characters than GOT but GOT has no realistic restrictions on them and can twist and imagine as they want.
Vikings basically is more realistic with very good battle music.

Two big things grabbed my attention when I researched The ******* Executioner. The first was that it is directed by Kurt Sutter, the same person who created Sons of Anarchy. The second thing was that this show is set in a medieval time-line. I was immediately intrigued and was dead set on watching the 2 hour pilot premiere.

The story was OK for the most part, nothing too game changing. The show started out very Robin-hood like. A corrupt Lord started raising taxes on the people he ruled over, causing a group of peasants (and one particular peasant knight) to revolt and fight back. They gave the stolen goods back to it's people, but unfortunately, their identity was discovered. This caused the lord to raid their village and all hell breaks lose. The story develops a lot more than that, but I don't want to give away too much. If what I've described interested you, then you should give this show a chance.

One thing that stands out the most is the gore. OH.MY.GOD. I'm not trying to spoil anything for you, but if you don't like seeing entrails, women getting stabbed, a fetus, neck slitting, or dismemberment, then this is definitely not the show for you. I didn't even know a network like Fox would allow some of this stuff to go through. Don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly fine with most of that stuff, but that scene in the village after the group comes back....my jaw dropped.

because its based on true story

GOT story was created by Warcraft nerds probably

It distantly follows the story of Ragnar's sons from the english perspective. You can see Ivar in an episode but he dies off-screen. One of the main characters is named Earl Ragnar but it's not supposed to be Ragnar Lodbrok.

Am going to check it out at some point although I've given up with the B level TV shows, at the moment watching Jessica Jones. I did catch bits of an episode of The Last Kingdom while flicking through the TV channels; the production was pretty impressive by the BBC's standards. Do you know why they cancelled Atlantis? the ratings were pretty good

Watched season 1, very good.

GOT is visually more stunning but Vikings being based on true events makes it more real. The acting is superb and the story is fast paced but doesn't take away from getting the characters across.

Yeah, very few shows out there will compete with the production values of GOT and their visuals but that was never the major strength of Vikings but it doesn't take away from the show. When I first saw the show, felt beyond the brilliant narrative the action really stood out! how did you find those close up battles? It's a very refreshing show and something different, can't wait for the new season. You're lucky, by the time you finish watching everything the new one would have been released :)) who is your favourite character so far

Im mid way through season two and it just gets better. Floki is my favourite character at the moment, seems to be very loyal and loving towards his friends but has an evil streak when it comes to his enemies, comes out with some brilliant one liners too. Their devotion to their pagan Gods and dying is like martyrdom is very interesting to see as it heavily influences their conquering ways.

Just finished watching the first episode of the last Kingdom. Just amazing. Will watch the rest of the episodes soon.

If you like Floki now you might like the Priest later on as well complex characters of Vikings for sure.

Watched 3 seasons within 2 weeks and its really amazing second season takes the cake for me but the character development in 3rd season is what makes it refreshing to watch.

:)) He's one of my favourites to; you're going to enjoy his journey on the show. I love Lagertha to; it's not often we get to see the portrayal of strong and empowering women, I use to be a huge fan of Xena back in the day. The relationship between Ragnor and Athlestan is something truly special to; it's a genuine friendship which the writers give a great deal of focus and it comes off pretty well on screen; often we get friendships on various TV series which are not pivotal in terms of the narrative or we get the usual female/male lust or love angle so it's one of the highlights for me on Vikings JaDed

I watched the show when it first came out, did a bit of research on the cast and the premise had me sold instantly and wasn't disappointed. Man can't wait for the new season! Also do you watch the Last Kingdom? how do you find that? I've not given it a look

Couldn't agree more i think the character development of Vikings is brilliant even for smaller and side roles the dialogues are well written.Kudos to the writers.

After looking at reviews going to catch it havent seen it yet, seems to have Wessex in it lol and anyhow its BBC the max they do is 3 eps but somehow they have 8 for this.

They had like 13 for Atlantis which had 2 seasons, the first wasn't great but the second was so much better. Ratings were pretty good to but they cancelled it lol

Typical BBC  but at best they'd cancel after the second season

I don't mind it tbh. I think that the show-runners knew that they are likely to be cancelled so they gave the story a full arc even rushing it in some parts (especially the first episode which is kind of confusing). Satisfying ending, could stand as a one season mini-series.

Not only Wessex but the king of the Saxons is Alfred which is the baby Aethelstan had with the princess of wessex and that the king of Wessex forced his son to adopt (not that there is any historical basis to suggest that Alfred the Great was an illegitimate child). And the leaders of the vikings are Uba and Ivar the Boneless (the sick child of Ragnar Lodbrok). However, even though there is no historical basis to say that Ubba and Ivar were brothers (and thus sons of a person similar to the mythical Ragnar), they are brothers in the show which means that Ragnar Lodbrok had existed in the narrative of the show.

So, to make it short, it's the story of the battle between Athelstan's son and Ragnar's sons.

Floki's giggle is pure evil. Lagartha is a brilliant character, what a woman. The series gets better as it goes one, one of the very best historical shows.

Will try the Last Kingdom next but any idea if Spartacus or Rome are worth watching?

Yep she is so fierce and very unique character on TV at the moment, love her

I haven't watched Spartacus but my friends always recommend it to me; think it only lasted 3 seasons though and their lead had to be changed when the main character passed away in real life I think. It seems to be a highly rated show, I might just start to watch it until Vikings comes out; plus it got Lucy Lawless in it to :). So even though I haven't seen Spartacus based on the reviews you should defo have that on on your list, not sure about Rome.

I just finished watching that show and honestly in its own way I'd have to say the first season is on par with Vikings season 1 if not better! absolutely brilliant; BBC have come out with an absolute blinder. You should check it out. endymion248 there will be a season 2

Man his ending was so satisfying, the moment his baap pulled out the.....I knew what would happen :)). Am disappointed by what happened with the seer man she was so beautiful! :( I feel like perhaps they could have done more with her character beyond the pay off which involved uthred poping her cherry. And you know at the ending? who was riding with uhtred on the horses? was it brida and young ragnor to take revenge? but then again they were locked up. There's a new drama show which will be released by the BBC in the new year called War and Peace, that might be good to

Nah, that was the nun they saved when the vikings attacked Winchester and some squire that joined them in the last episode. I feel the seer's death was kind of stupid, what was she even doing on a battlefield? But she deserved it for killing Uthred's son to save Alfred's.

I doubt War and Peace would make a good show. But BBC made a mini-series a few years out of ''The Pillars of the Earth'' book and that one was relatively decent so who knows.

There have been a lot of historical/historical setting shows lately.

Its very different when you first watch Vikings and then Last Kingdom we keep trying to connect the dots having said that i guess most people from UK would prefer Last kingdom over Vikings but for me it was the other way around although both were brilliantly directed and acted.

True, because she wasn't fighting either but she was at that little camp on the out-skirts of the battlefield it is beyond me why people were gathered there despite by fact that they were not going to fight. The warrior nun was handy with the spear so I get that they bought her with them. Did the seer know it was uthred's son? or was it just a "strangers kid", she obviously realised it was him after uthred found him buried but I don't think she knew it was uthred's son, plus uthred agreed to it when he said "it has to be done". Anyhow it was a silly way to bring her to an end, I guess they are continuing the whole "uthred has lost everything" angle but still....

Was it BBC or Channel 4 am not sure, I may check that out; the new season of luther is out on the BBC but I've not watched the earlier seasons; however on the iPlayer you can watch a 13 minute recap of seasons 1-3. Yeah, we are going to see more in the future because it's something they are really pushing for and want to give us a "variety" of programming so at best we may no see shows beyond a season or two but the Last Kingdom has been critically acclaimed with excellent ratings

The most brutal tv show like ever slightly let down by extreme nudity. To compare the action to Game of Thrones, a fight similar to Prince Oberyn and The Mountain is showcased nearly every week.

Only watched one episode of Spartacus. Seemed like a very low budget show with bad acting and annoying special effects. Didn't bother watching the second episode. :afaq

Yeah, she didn't know but Uthred had to pay the price all the same.

It was Starz actually, not BBC. But it was really good imo and you may find a replacement to your seer in Aliena :p

Did you save BL's princess gif lol

Yeah, she didn't know but Uthred had to pay the price all the same.

It was Starz actually, not BBC. But it was really good imo and you may find a replacement to your seer in Aliena :p

Yeah he did, I actually might get the books; I like the characters although I don't know if it would hinder my experience of the TV series. Did a search on her, she's in pillars of earth right? dayyyum I feel a bit better now aha

:))) Yeah that's her signature gif, am just borrowing it :murali

Only watched one episode of Spartacus. Seemed like a very low budget show with bad acting and annoying special effects. Didn't bother watching the second episode. :afaq

Even the most ardent Spartacus fans hate the first 2 or 3 episodes before it becomes insanely entertaining.

The most brutal tv show like ever slightly let down by extreme nudity. To compare the action to Game of Thrones, a fight similar to Prince Oberyn and The Mountain is showcased nearly every week.

Thanks, I will give it a go then. I wonder if it's based on true events such as Vikings?

Wouldn't know, I haven't read the TLK books. Yeah, she's in pote, if you haven't read the book then you should watch it for sure as it is a great story. It's a mini-series, 8 episodes.
