ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has finalised almost 84 per cent of its National Assembly candidates for 229 of the 272 seats of lower house of parliament.

It seems party workers protest over “unjust” distribution of party tickets has also forced the party’s hand, as leadership changed previously announced candidates on some nine NA constituencies, majority of them falling in Punjab.

Additionally, earlier announced tickets for as many as seven NA constituencies have also been withdrawn from candidates, with the party saying “decision on these seats would be made at a later stage”.

On NA-29, previously announced candidate Shah Farman has been replaced by Nasir Khan Musazai. Similarly on NA-84 Dr Amar Ali Hussain Khan has been replaced by Chaudhry Bilal Ijaz; on NA-92, Zafar Ahmad Qureshi has been replaced with Sahibzada Muhammad Qasim Sialvi, and on NA-94 Malik Ehsanullah Tiwana has now replaced Gul Asghar Khan.

Likewise, PTI has also changed candidates on several other constituencies including NA-113 where Riaz Fatyana replaces previously nominated Haider Ali Khan Kharal, NA-162 where Ayesha Nazir Jutt has been replaced with Khalid Mehmood Chohan, and NA-175 where Mobeen Alam has been announced as the party candidate instead of Makhdoom Syed Ahmad Alam. Party nominee from NA-184 has also been changed. In this constituency Syeda Zahira Bukhari has been fielded in place of Basit Bukhari; for NA-264 Sardar Atif Ali Sanjrani has been replaced by Saifullah Khan.

22 candidates submit papers for Quetta’s NA-265 seat

Meanwhile, tickets have been withdrawn from previously announced candidates including Chaudhry Muhammad Ilyas (NA-71), Khurrum Shahzad (NA-107), Dr Azimuddin Zahid Lakhvi (NA-139), Sardar Talib Nakai (NA-140), Syed Sumsam Ali Bokhari (NA-141), Mian Abdur Rasheed (NA-169), and Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah (NA-228). Final decision on these seven constituencies will be announced later, a party spokesperson said.

In addition to his hometown in Multan, PTI vice-chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi will also contest elections from NA-220 Umerkot and NA-221 Tharparkar.

In first phase of tickets distribution, PTI on June 8 announced candidates for 173 out of 272 total NA seats though a total of 16 changes had been made to that list while today, it has announced 67 new candidates for as many constituencies.

Former PTI MNA Ali Muhammad Khan has also been allotted ticket from Mardan’s NA-22. He was ignored in the first stage of distribution.

Despite angry protests from party workers Nadia Aziz from Sargodha has also obtained party ticket. Apparently senior party leader Jahangir Khan Tareen also managed a decision in favour of Sikandar Bosan, who will be party candidate from NA-154 Multan.

A new entrant to party Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiyar has been awarded tickets from two NA constituencies including NA-176 and NA-177. Previously he was given ticket only for NA-177. Former chairman Senate Mian Muhammad Soomro, who joined PTI earlier this month, will be a candidate from NA-196 Jacobabad. Due to adjustments on some seats with PML-Q, PTI has not fielded its candidates in some constituencies of Jhelum and Gujrat.

Some 13 tickets out of 229 finalised ones are given to women candidates.

Despite rumors, PTI did not withdraw its previously announced candidate Ghulam Sarwar Khan from NA-59 and NA-63 against disgruntled PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar. But apparently giving a slight favour to Nisar, the party has not fielded any runner for PP-10 (Rawalpindi) from where Chaudhry Nisar will also be contesting.

The party spokesperson said candidates on the remaining seats will be finalised and announced soon. He added that current list was finalised following review on all appeals which were filed earlier by party workers and leaders against out-of-merit allotment of party tickets.

Provincial assemblies

PTI has also announced its candidates for provincial assemblies of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan. Candidates are announced on 77 per cent seats of all provincial assemblies, that is ticket holders are announced for 443 out of total 577 provincial assembly seats.

Out of total 99 KP assembly seats candidates have been announced on 90 seats, out of 297 Punjab Assembly seats candidates are finalised on 238. Likewise, 79 candidates are given tickets for 130 Sindh Assembly seats, and for 51 Balochistan assembly seats candidates are finalised on 36 constituencies.

Mianwali, Pakistan: Pakistani cricket star-turned-politician Imran Khan on Sunday kicked off his election campaign by staging a major rally and promising sweeping changes in the country if his party wins.

Pakistan will hold a general election on July 25 and Khan is hoping to achieve a years-long dream of becoming prime minister.

The polls will bring to a head political tensions that have been mounting since former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was ousted by the Supreme Court on corruption charges last July and later barred from politics for life.

“Today I am launching my election campaign and weeks after, you will see emergence of a new Pakistan,” Khan told a rally of thousands of people in his native Mianwali constituency, more than 200km southwest of Islamabad.

Khan said that if elected, he will root out corruption by strengthening institutions, will bring investment from abroad and will provide better job opportunities for young people.

He also promised changes in the agriculture and education sectors and wide-ranging reforms to introduce a culture of paying tax.

“With the grace of God, we will make a new Pakistan which will be self-sufficient and will stand on its own feet, will prosper and where government will serve its people,” Khan said.

Sharif was the 15th prime minister in Pakistan’s seven-decade history to be ousted before finishing a full term.

The country witnessed its first democratic transfer of power following polls in 2013, which Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won in a landslide.

The upcoming elections are expected to pit the PML-N against its main rival, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party led by Imran Khan.

Despite the numerous court rulings against the PML-N, the party has won a string of recent by-elections proving it will likely remain a powerful force.

Four PTI men stripped of tickets in Gujrat, Okara

GUJRAT/OKARA: Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf on Monday withdrew two party tickets from Gujrat and as many from Okara.

The axe fell on Gujrat district president Chaudhary Ilyas for NA-71 and Zubair Ahmed Khan for PP-28.

The party had issued six tickets for two NA and four PA seats of Gujrat district and kept two NA and as many PA constituencies open under a seat adjustment paradigm with the PML-Q. But now PTI’s candidates are in the run only in four constituencies- one NA and three PA seats including Syed Faizul Hassan Shah, NA 70 (Lalamusa-Dinga), Saleem Sarwar, PP 31 (Gujrat city), Mian Akhter Hayat, PP 32 (Dinga-Kharian) and ex-MPA Liaquat Ali Bhadar, PP 33 (Lalamusa).

However, sources said the senior party leadership has reviewed its earlier decision of nominating Mr. Ilyas for NA-71 and his name is now removed from the list as reports are rife that ex-MPA Hanif Awan, who is annoyed with the PML-N, is likely to be nominated as the PTI candidate from NA-71.

The PP-28 ticket of Zubair Tanda has apparently been withdrawn on the ‘pressure’ of the PML-Q that is demanding the seat for its nominee Shujaat Nawaz Ajnala.

In Okara, the PTI withdrew candidature from Sumsam Ali Bukhari (NA-141) and Chaudhry Muhammad Saleem Sadiq (PP-189) when they were canvassing in their respective areas on Sunday night, directing them to wait for further directions.

Both the candidates and their supporters were surprised as they were actively campaigning in their areas.

Three weeks ago, the PTI leadership had withdrawn the ticket for NA-141 from former MPA Chaudhry Masood Shafqat Rubera and awarded it to party’s provincial information secretary Sumsam Bukhari, a state minister in the previous PPP government. Rubera had sought review of the decision.

PTI’s candidate for PP-189 Saleem Sadiq also faced a similar situation, as his rivals, including PTI’s former ticket holder Chaudhry Muhammad Azhar – a former provincial minister in the PPP government - who had joined the party four years ago, was also an aspirant for the same seat.

But the leadership had cleared Sadiq, who had started campaign under party’s NA-142 candidate Rao Hassan Sikandar.

Ashraf Khan Sohna and Chaudhry Azhar along with other party workers had staged a sit-in at Banigala recently after which the party leadership, according to Mr Sohna, had assured them of reviewing the decision on PP-189 ticket.

KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has made seat adjustment with four political parties in 16 constituencies for upcoming general elections 2018, sources have revealed.

According to sources PTI has made seat adjustment with PML-Q, Awami Muslim League, Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen and Grand Democratic Alliance.

Following this seat adjustment, the PTI is assured about win of its 15 candidates.

Sources said PTI and Q-League have agreed over seat adjustment for four National Assembly seats that include two from Gujrat and one each from Chakwal and Bahawalpur.

PTI has also engaged in seat adjustment with Sheikh Rashid’s Awami Muslim League in NA-60 and 62. Development has also been made with Majlis Wahdatul Muslimeen in Bakhar.

In Sindh, PTI has made seat adjustment with anti-PPP alliance ---Grand Democratic Alliance—over 10 seats and Imran Khan’s party is sure about upset in these constituencies.

Ex-PM Abbasi, Ayesha Gulalai get tribunals' go-ahead for NA-53 contest

An appellate tribunal on Tuesday cleared former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and PTI-Gulalai (PTI-G) leader Ayesha Gulalai's nomination papers from Islamabad's NA-53 seat for the upcoming general elections.

Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, presiding over the appellate tribunal, accepted the nomination papers of both Abbasi and Gulalai and set aside returning officer (RO) Mohammad Adnan Khan's decision to reject the papers earlier this month.

The RO had objected against minor defects in the nomination papers, but the tribunal today rejected those objections and observed that under Section 62 of the Elections Act 2017, such defects may be overlooked.

The tribunal is expected to issue a ruling on PTI Chairman Imran Khan's nomination papers from the same constituency today.

The Election Tribunal on Wednesday cleared Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to contest polls from NA-53 (Islamabad).

Earlier today, Imran appeared before the appallent tribunal after two no-shows to complete his nomination form for NA-53 (Islamabad). The returning officer (RO) had rejected Imran’s nomination papers on technical grounds that the candidate did not fill “Clause N” of the affidavit.

PML-N heavyweights cleared to contest crucial seats

Clause N of the affidavit is required to mention ‘contribution’ of former legislators made to their respective constituencies during their previous tenure.

His lawyer, Advocate Babar Awan, had filed the appeal against the RO’s decision before an appellant tribunal chaired by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani of Islamabad High Court (IHC). However, Imran failed to show up before the tribunal twice. In the last hearing, Justice Kiyani had insisted that he appear in person.

Imran Khan cleared to contest NA-95, NA-131 by election tribunal

On Wednesday, the PTI chief appeared before the bench along with his lawyer to fill out “Clause N” of the form in which he mentioned Namal University, Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and “encouraging the masses to struggle for their constitutional rights.”

Shortly after submitting the completed forms, the former cricketer left from the back door without speaking to the media.

PESHAWAR: The disgruntled workers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) from Malakand district on Thursday announced not to support the party candidates in the upcoming general election.

Speaking at a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club, Nek Muhammad, Raziq Jan, Muhammad Hayat, Iftikhar Khan and others, who had submitted papers for the national and provincial assemblies' constituencies from Malakand, said that the PTI had not chosen the candidates on merit.

They said 13 strong candidates of PTI, including founding members, had submitted papers for the provincial constituencies and five NA seats. They said they had requested the parliamentary board to award tickets on merit among these candidates. However, the board selected a person who could not win a local council seat, they added. "Imran Khan would boast that he would award ticket on merit but unfortunately the ticket was awarded on the basis of wealth," Nek Muhammad said. They rejected the decision of the parliamentary board and accused Murad Saeed of playing a negative role in the award of tickets. The PTI workers claimed that the party candidate had secured 52,000 votes in previous election due to their support.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - The Pakistani opposition party led by former cricket star Imran Khan is gaining ground in opinion polls ahead of a July 25 general election, with one survey showing it pulling ahead of the ruling party and another showing it only slightly behind.

A survey by Pulse Consultant showed Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI, or Pakistan Justice Movement) ahead with the support of 30 percent of respondents nationwide, compared to 27 percent for its main rival, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was at 17 percent.

A separate nationwide poll by Gallup Pakistan had PML-N on top with 26 percent, PTI with 25 percent and the PPP at 16 percent.

Both polls were commissioned by Pakistan’s Jang Media Group and were published on Wednesday in its affiliated newspaper, The News. They each surveyed about 3,000 people, with a margin of error of 1.6 percent for the Pulse survey and 2-3 percent for Gallup.

The new polls indicate a swing towards Khan’s party compared to similar nationwide polls in 2017, which put the PML-N 8-9 percentage points ahead of PTI.

Khan’s political fortunes have improved since PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif was removed as prime minister by the Supreme Court last year over undeclared assets.

Sharif, who was disqualified from politics for life, now faces a verdict in an anti-corruption court on Friday along with his daughter Maryam, who is running for parliament. The case, which concerns the purchase of luxury apartments in London, could see Sharif jailed and Maryam disqualified.

Sharif requested on Wednesday that the authorities delay the verdict until he returns to Pakistan from London, where he is taking care of his ailing wife. He said he would be back as soon as his wife’s condition improves.

“I want to hear that decision in person standing in the courtroom,” he told a press conference in London televised live by Pakistani TV channels.

Asked if he would go back home regardless of the outcome in the case, Sharif said: “If it comes in my favour, or, God forbid, it comes against me, I will go back.”

Sharif has accused the military and courts conspiring to oust him and using legal cases and intimidation to help Khan’s PTI party, accusations denied by Khan, the army and the judiciary.

Khan, a former cricket captain of Pakistan, has portrayed the legal cases as a long-overdue corruption crackdown on the PML-N, which he has labelled a graft-ridden “mafia”.

Imran Khan Aims to Make Graft-Prone Pakistan a Welfare State

Imran Khan stepped onto a makeshift stage in a trash-ridden Karachi district at 1 a.m. to address hundreds of supporters who’d been waiting for hours. His message: vote out the city’s rulers who have failed to provide jobs, education, sanitation and healthcare.

“This is the first opportunity to free yourselves -- they, despite taking turns for the last 30 years, couldn’t give you basic facilities,” Khan told the cheering crowd gathered on Wednesday in Pakistan’s financial capital of 15 million people that’s beset with water shortages. His aim? “To make an Islamic welfare state out of Pakistan.”

On a chaotic two-day campaign tour of Karachi ahead of July 25 elections, the opposition leader and former cricket star told Bloomberg that Pakistan’s economy can only be fixed by overhauling its corrupt state institutions. Lamenting the piles of roadside garbage while waving to supporters from a white Toyota Land Cruiser protected by police commandos, Khan, 65, outlined plans to expand social spending while fixing the nation’s finances.

If elected he would break the dynastic hold on Pakistani politics. Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and the Pakistan Peoples Party led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the son of assassinated former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, have between bouts of military rule rotated power for decades. Seen as an untested force, some investors are also cautious over the prospect of Khan coming to power.

Khan said he’ll need loans to fund those short term ambitions, which include creating five million “cheap” homes within five years. He said his Movement for Justice party isn’t ruling out the need for support from the International Monetary Fund. In May, Asad Umar, who is pegged to become the finance minister if Khan is elected, told Bloomberg the nation is close to bankruptcy, so whoever comes to power will need a bailout.

“We’re discussing this, we’re still in the process of working out our options right now, because we face the biggest economic crisis in our history,’’ Khan said. “Pakistan has to be a welfare state -- but for that obviously you need revenues.”

Khan, who first entered politics in the 1990s, is riding a wave of support on the back of his anti-graft campaign, which ousted his main opponent Sharif from power last year over corruption charges. A Gallup Pakistan poll published this week indicates Khan is closing the gap with Sharif’s party, which is campaigning for re-election on its record of boosting infrastructure spending, improving security and reducing power cuts. In the poll, 26 percent said they will vote for the PML-N, down from 34 percent in November. About 25 percent said they’ll support Khan’s party.

In a bid to wrest Sharif’s grip from the province of Punjab, where the PML-N has deep patronage networks, Khan has courted Pakistan’s feudal landlords and so-called electables who command large vote banks. He rejected criticism that including such political turncoats on his party tickets conflicts with his anti-corruption message.

“You have to win in this system -- then you can bring about a change,’’ Khan said. “Once electables join you they come under your party discipline.”

The election has been marred by allegations of widespread army-led media censorship and intimidation. Sharif and other observers accuse Khan of close ties to the military, which has ruled Pakistan for much of its post-independence history. Many believe the army supports Khan because its wants a pliant government it can control after its relationship with Sharif soured beyond repair.

Khan denied the accusations. “Because the establishment is not supporting them this time, they are working on a George Bush formula that if you’re not with me, you’re against me,” he said, referring to the widespread Pakistani term for the military establishment. “This is the first time you genuinely have a neutral set up now and I think this is the first time we will have free and fair elections.”

He rejected claims that he’s against China’s financing of more than $60 billion in infrastructure projects as part of its Belt and Road trade route and said it’s a “great opportunity” for Pakistan. However, he didn’t rule out re-examining those loans if elected. “Most of the terms they’ve kept secret, people don’t know what the terms are,” Khan said.

After multiple failed government attempts, Khan’s party won’t try to privatize bloated and loss-making state companies, such as Pakistan International Airlines Corp. and Pakistan Steel Mills. His solution to “stop this bleeding” is through a Malaysian model of control through a government holding company run by professionals.

Now weeks away from his best shot at power, Khan looks out at the crowds mobbing his vehicle as it pulled into the next rally.

“We have a young population, it’s 200 million people, we should be growing at the rate of China’’ he said. “If Pakistan is to get out of this mess, in short, we will have to completely change the way we govern this country."

PTI to launch election manifesto on July 9

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan formally approved party’s manifesto for 2018 general elections, which is likely to be released on July 9.

The committee for the party’s manifesto comprising Dr Shireen Mazari, Asad Umar, Naeemul Haq, and others have drafted the manifesto after consulting with first-tier PTI leadership.

Earlier, Imran Khan had announced that the party manifesto will be unveiled in the first week of July. However, due to his tight election campaign schedule, it has been decided to release it on July 9.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have made their manifestos public already.

A senior PTI leader said that party’s “comprehensive” manifesto will cover issues ranging from country’s sovereignty, foreign policy, poverty alleviation, economic, tax, judicial, police, constitutional, administrative and institutional reforms, corruption and accountability, governance, human development, education, health, population welfare, low cost housing, youth and women empowerment, environment and tourism, agriculture, land and labour reforms, information technology, internal and external security, etc.

Senior PTI leader Abdul Aleem Khan said that people were expecting a conclusive and riveting manifesto by PML-N but it was an utter disappointment again with fake promises.

“Vandalising provincial resources for a decade, PML-N is now dreaming to be voted into power again”, he observed, adding Shehbaz Sharif’s tall claims of progress had been washed away in the recent rainfall in Lahore. “Emotional speeches, hollow slogans and paid campaigns cannot save the House of Sharifs from the accountability now,” he said.

PTI rejects delay in judgment

Imran Khan extended well wishes to Kulsoom Nawaz and said that Nawaz Sharif had been using his wife’s illness to emotionally blackmail people of Pakistan. He demanded that the court should not delay announcement of judgment in the Avenfield reference.

An accountability court is scheduled to announce Avenfield reference verdict on Friday (today). However, Sharif family has sought seven-day delay in the announcement of judgment, citing deteriorating health situation of Kulsoom Nawaz.

“Kulsoom was not your priority when you (Nawaz) were carrying out G.T Road rally. Now when judgment is about to be announced you are saying to wait for my return. Do not wait for him. Judgment should be announced at its time,” Khan said.

He said that Sharif family had already been given over two-year time to prove their innocence but failed miserably. “Law is equal for all and it does not discriminate between poor and rich. Do such facilities ever extended to ordinary Pakistanis facing corruption allegations?” he questioned.

He also criticized National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) decision that it would not arrest politicians facing corruption inquiries till the next general elections in a bid to provide level playing field to all contesting candidates. “By making such decisions we are making Pakistan a banana republic,” he said.

Khan said that Nawaz Sharif would not return and read the judgment in newspapers. He added that Adiyala Jail was waiting for him.

He said this while addressing party workers on the occasion of former PML-N senator Zafar Ali Shah joining PTI.
