Hashim Amla | The Mega Discussion Thread

H.Amla has an average of 58.66 in the ODI series against NZ...

B.McCullum is ahead with 62.33 and AB DE Villiers has no average because out of 3 innings he has not been out...

the one day series was good for amla:D....tho a bit dissapointed he couldnt convert one of the 50's into a 10th....

now hopin he does well in tests also:D

and SA will play INDIA in a one off T20 match on march 30 in johannesberg:D.....hopin amla makes da 11 and scores atleast a 50 and cements himself in the T20 format as well for SA:D

He has an astonishing ODI record, currently scoring a 50 every third game and a 100 every 5 games near enough.

Best batsman in the world !

Terrific player and a wonderful man. Respect

I guess the only team he struggled against in ODIs is Trundlindia :))

Averages 61 against us :/

Best all-round opener in the world atm. Wish one of our(Pakistan) openers could posses even 50% of his God-gifted talent.

Amla into the 20's. Been a tough innings so far. Hasn't looked out of touch but has faced some good tight bowling. Especially by Vettori.

Playing well now. 36 off 77. Under pressure though because SA don't have a lot of batting to come and AB and Kallis were out for 0.

I am surprised to see so much love and support for a player whose parents are Indian!!

^
Dravid gets a lot of love here too so need to be surprise. Its easy to like a cricketer who has character plus strong cricketing skill and on top of that carries himself with grace and dignity.

Trolling eh? Yes, we hate people who are of Indian descent. Anything else you would like to know?

Him being Muslim more than makes up for him being Indian.

Anyway on 46 now, courtesy of a couple of boundries. This guy loves hitting fours.

Yes, it has riled me up, fused bulb and all. :akhtar

Anyways, back to thread: 50 up for Amla, and not too much tuk tuk in the past few overs, aww man.

All these fours are boring me :misbah

It was coming.... anyways i'm of to bed.
This will turn out to be an interesting match.

Amla really did a Misbah, except for the SR.
Six out of nothing, Tuks, Not converting into a century, etc.

i hope he does well dis inning....his test form has dipped a bit post aus test series....he dint perform dat well against lankans and da first test against nz was also a bit below par by his standards....

Gonna turn it on after the Man City game, looks like a good contest.

I dare say:

Amla has been struggling!
I guess thats because I have very high standards for him, come good next time # (hash)

Better ODI bat than test bat.

Been saying it all along and I still think it's true: Smith, then Kallis, then de Villiers. Then Amla.

I'd place Kallis and de Villiers as the best two test bats in SA.

With half the Test series finished for him he's been mediocre. Was the highest scorer in the first innings of the first Test but hasn't done anything since. With Kallis out too this is looking bad for SA.

Made another 60...was very disappointing the way he got out though.

Been unable to convert all these 50's into hundreds this series. Mixed tour for the great one.

He is likely out of the current test. Got hit in the groin area yesterday and had to have emergency surgery. Hope he's okay soon.

he news is that Hashim Amla may not take any further part in this Test because of his injury yesterday. "Hashim underwent emergency exploratory surgery resulting from blunt trauma sustained to his groin region," South Africa's team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee said. "He spent the night in hospital and was discharged this morning. The surgeon is satisfied with the outcome and expects Hashim to make a full recovery, however, it is unlikely that he will be able to take further part in the current Test match at the Basin Reserve."

It happened in the 21st over, when he inside-edged Martin onto his crotch. He was down for a couple of minutes, the physio had to come out. Poor chap.

Hope he gets well soon.

Amla undergoes emergency groin surgery

South Africa top order batsman Hashim Amla is unlikely to feature in the rest of the third cricket Test against New Zealand after undergoing emergency surgery for a groin injury.

The 29-year-old was operated on in Wellington Hospital last night after he edged a ball from New Zealand paceman Chris Martin into his groin during his innings of 63 on the first day of the Test.

South Africa manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said Amla suffered extreme discomfort after the blow, and was taken to hospital for assessment.

"Hashim underwent emergency exploratory surgery resulting from blunt trauma sustained to his groin region," Dr Moosajee said.

"He spent the night in hospital and was discharged this morning.

"The surgeon is satisfied with the outcome and expects Hashim to make a full recovery, however, it is unlikely that he will be able to take further part in the current Test match," he said.

Amla was on 33 when he suffered the blow and received treatment on the field. He continued his innings for more than an hour before being dismissed in the first over after tea.

His loss is a further blow for the tourists who are already without star allrounder Jacques Kallis, who was ruled out with a stiff neck before play started.

Rain has delayed play on the second day at the Basin Reserve with South Africa set to resume on 2-136.

hope he recovers soon.....most likely is out of the current test....been a mixed tour for him as inziquicksingle pointed out.....

and south africa have rested all players involved in dis test for da t20 against india on march 30....so botha will be leadin.....with both captain de villiers and vice captain amla rested:(

Hope he recovers soon, one of my best batsmen of recent times and a true fighter! best wishes.

lol at the bump!

Do you want to jinx the groin? STOP jinxing the groin!

Just heard that Amla is fasting confirme by BBC...

Surely fasting must effect cricket performance big time, batting fielding etc ??

Is it not better that you do not play at this level when fasting ??

That is why I have immense respect for Amla. He shows how a muslim can be true to his deen while fulfilling all his responsibilities. He does not endorse alcoholic drinks and pays a fine for that. Celebrates victories but not by uncorking champagnes, and yet does not look like a misfit in the team. Fasts while playing, fulfilling his roles towards his religion and country. Plus the humble and polite nature. Reclaiming the humility and piety which the beard stands for.

Does the fasting affect your performance during matches, or if no games are being played in Ramadan, is your training being affected?

Yes, it does affect the matches and training- positively mostly- Alhamdulillah. People get amazed when I tell them that I have learnt so much in my game while I had been fasting. There has been instances on hot and humid summers days in Durban when I had been batting, and I remember thinking to myself with a bone dry mouth and throbbing headache...’when am I going to get out because I cannot handle this anymore’. I went on to make a big score, Alhamdulillah, but I have learnt after passing that stage of thirst and mental fatigue, that the limits we put on the body and mind can, and at times, must be challenged.

Well since he is in travel condition, he can skip the fasts and make them up when he concludes his travels. The verses annoucing the exemptions are interpreted to mean it is a CHOICe - and some experts suggest that one is almost obliged to take the exemptions since when God gives you an exemption you are to take it......

I wouldn't judge him in any way for breaking the fast. I have no interest in religious practices. I just think that he has probably broken the fast at some point - he is a mere human - and in the interests of competition then frankly good for him.

...let me suggest that given his history he would either fast or not: fasting and then breaking it before sundown is only allowed in case of injury/illness and is otherwise considered a major major no-no...

Not fasting is fine, and permitted in Islam if you make it up later and if you've got a reason (travelling in this case). Fasting and then breaking it midway is a no-go area.

Either Hashim Amla is fasting or he is not; he wont be breaking it midway.

That's fair enough. I am being cynical, I know that. But concentration, energy levels and strength will surely suffer without food and water.

Absolutely - one of the reasons for fasting is to feel the hunger and thirst.

Interesting point about taking the exemption for not fasting not traveling:Hakeem Olajuwon was fasting during the home games of the NBA championship that he won (unsure if he was fasting in the away games). Hussain Abdullah a Minnesota Viking was fasting throughout the pre-season training since they were at home.....do not know if he continued during the season for home games....

I think its probably super-hard during Test matches. I dont want Amla to faint midway during innings, especially the fact that it's almost 18 hour fasts in England this time of the year. Food probably isnt going to be the problem but dehydration is.

Title edited.

Good luck to him, fighting it out right now. :)

40*. Looking well-set. The pitch will probably be harder to play on tomorrow.

Good start.

On whether he's fasting or not, I was assuming he is. We will find out though I guess. I don't think he's the type to compromise on such a thing (eg. not wearing alcohol brand on cricket clothing).

Lets hope the rain stays away.

PS. thanks f_c

Probably not fasting, he is well within his rights to not fast if he is travelling and fears for his health, playing test cricket and all.

I would have thought he would skip and make up for his fast as he is on travels however respect goes out if he is fasting as its going to be very tough this year with 18+ hour fasts.

Lively little knock from a testing attack and conditions. As for fasting contrary to opinion it can help, no distractions as such be it food, drink, sledging, drink breaks or whatever.

Lol guys lets forget whether he's fasting or not, and just observe his game, it's stealing the discussion.

IF he can play tests while fasting............it will make him physically and mentally more stronger when he plays non-fasting :amla
