Hashim Amla | The Mega Discussion Thread

Amla's style is like Dravid and Moyo fused together. His defensive technique reminds me of Dravid and he plays his shots like Moyo.

Next stop: 100. Watching him bat is making me a tad nervous, not looking as confident as he did yesterday.

Quality innings. Looked a bit fidgety at the end but made it.

The thing to highlight; after his century no falling in sijda or any over-dramatizations, just a simple appreciative bat raise to take in the applause and that's it.

Fasting or no fasting, why can't we just enjoy what he is doing on the pitch out there. He is really good to watch with beautiful technique which I hope all our young batsman try to decipher.

"For all of you who have asked, Firdose Moonda, our South Africa correspondent at The Oval, confirms that Amla (and Imran Tahir) are only fasting on non-match days"

YES! Some of our players take their helmets off and perform the sajda at scoring 50s. There is absolutely no reason in performing sajda even if you get to a 100.

Sensible. Not humanely possible to field and bat throughout a day's play without food and drink.

THIS ... and this guy is properly more religiously observant then all the Pak players.. Just shows they are overly emotional and dramatic, and they cant play half the innings Amla can :umarakmal

Indeed, Amla has too be one of the most composed men in the game without a dramatic bone in his body.

Doesn't go around showing off his religious beliefs or even his ability with the bat.

Why does it matter so much if he's fasting or not? SMH

Top class innings. I expected him to score on this pitch though..

The Pakistan players, by and large, are playing to the public gallery in Pakistan by pretending how religious they are.
Some of their antics in their attempts to prove their religious credentials are extremely embarrassing, and reinforce the negative perceptions of Islam due to their false attempts at religious piety.

Nicely said. Especially when they start spot-fixing after doing all those sajda's.

You can thank God after the match is over by praying and just say thanks in your heart during the game.

This.

This is getting off-topic but the likes of Misbah and Afridi don't perform the sajda. Wonder who is 'inspiring' the likes of Azhar and Shafiq to perform the sajda?

Words fail me when it comes to Amla. So many good things about him, both as a person and as a cricketer. Hopefully he goes on to do something special tomorrow.

To be honest the only player I've seen do sajda after 50 is u akmal. That's probably because he knows he can't get to 100 (due to batting so low).

Lol I still remember that in the Asia Cup; Hafeez made a century and did a sijda, Nasir made a century and did a sijda; Kohli made a century and started cussing.....and Kohli won India the match.

I just find it ironic.

Hashim Amla

An epic innings by Hashim Amla today. Watched his innings all day.

Now this is what cricket is all about, hard graft tough obsorbing test match day. Loved every single minute of it (even though I support England), I think cricket was a winner today.

Ive completely had enough of smack, bang, wallop millionaire wanabe cricketers.

Test cricket all the way, everyday!!!

Hes been on the field so far pretty much all game apart from 1st over of the S.A batting inns! what an effort and hope he gets a triple ton here!

Congratulations Hashim Amla : Highest Test Score by a South African

Hashim has surpassed the highest individual test score by a South African which was by A B DeVilliers who made 278 versus Pakistan in Abu Dhabi in 2010.

The best thing for him is, he can fail for the rest of the series like Devon Smith against Hafeez and still average over 50 for the series :))

287 not out. WOW

Highest individual score for RSA. Title edited. :)

Magnificent achievement. None better than him to have the record. :)

What a player amazing, magnificent. His batting is simply mouth-watering stuff.

Amla gets SA's first 300, whatta player! Take a bow young man, your country is proud of you!

What a player. Congrats to him and SA fans.

It wouldn't be far-fetched to say that they now have one of the best batting line up in the world by a mile.

Congratulations Hashim Amla! :)

What a player!

the thesaurus will have a new term Amla: one who is calm but angers the opposition with fearful patience and dazzling stroke play

What a guy AB is though.
Before today, no South African batsman had scored 300 runs in a Test match. AB de Villiers' 278 stood as the tallest mountain and when Hashim Amla went past him, De Villiers was shown on camera cheering him on

And Garry was in the dressing room?

All 3 record holders at some point. :)

And Biff :D Smith went past Gary, AB went past Smith, and Hash went past AB.

That's amazing. I just wonder what a great dynasty it would have been had the likes of G.Pollock, Barry Richards played more Int Cricket. :13: :O

Everyone talks about West Indians and Aussies. Saffers have produced some gun players in a short while.

lol hilarious pic. all saw andrew strauss demolish his sunglasses in frustration due to the emotional volcano that was the dictator.

...And the mental decay when he resorted to laugher instead of tears and anger, aptly joined by his other ten fellow Englishme- err.. teammates.

I caught a bit of his interview on Channel 5 a the end of the days highlights, very humble and understated.

What I found noticeable was that there was no "Alhumdulilahs", "inshallahs" or "first of all thanks to Allah". To me it showed just how utterly comfortable he was with himself and his identity - he didn't need to prove anything to anybody else. He lets his quiet mannerisms do the talking for him. An absolute gem.

Note : I'm not having a dig at players who do these things...

it's funny that just because Amla is a muslim, Pakistanis (and Afghanis) have become his fans. What about all the other great batsmen to watch who aren't muslims? Why isn't there an AB Devilliers fan club, a Ricky Ponting, or Gautum Gambhir fan club on PakPassion? Doesn't have to be these particular cricketers, but any other foreign cricketer who isn't a muslim...

Who cares he's an awesome batsman and he's Muslim, so we have some form of brotherly allegiance to him. Congratulations on pointing out the obvious bro

Another century. What a fine player, and a nice human being.

I like how his celebrations are almost muffled, but you can see how happy he is when they replay him immediately after he's hit the run for the hundred, and he smiles :afridi

True, that smile speaks volumes more than any gesture ever could.

I'd rate him as the best Test batsman in the world at the moment. I'm a big fan of the guy. He's not just a wonderful player, but above all he's a wonderful human being as well. I wish he gets more and more success in the future. A great in the making.
