What do Indian posters think about this?

=================

Hate is suffocating every aspect of life in India. No space seems safe.

Early morning on Oct. 18, a neighbor alerted me to a WhatsApp message distributed by our building’s security guard celebrating the killer of Mahatma Gandhi and urging people to take up the gun to protect the idea of Hindu sovereignty. These types of messages are popular with Hindu nationalists and right-wing supporters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When I posted it on my social media, many unabashedly supported the hate and threat in the message.

And when the iconic jewelry brand Tanishq recently ran an ad showcasing an interfaith marriage, the resulting Hindu right-wing backlash on social media forced the company to pull the commercial.

The beautiful 45-second ad encapsulated the Indian traditions of pluralism and cultural diversity, with a Muslim family celebrating Hindu customs and traditions in a ceremony to make a pregnant Hindu daughter-in-law feel loved in her home. But the video swiftly triggered a wave of threats of physical violence against employees of the jewelry brand. Indian social media flared up, with the term #LoveJihad trending, a slur invented by Hindu nationalists for interfaith marriages in which a Muslim man is married to a Hindu woman.

This is where division and hate have driven us, in a country that ranks second only to the United States in the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases. Many felt that ad, which dominated news coverage for days, was the real existential threat to India and not the horrible mismanagement of the pandemic response. In less than 24 hours, the brand announced the withdrawal of the commercial, titled “Ekatvam,” or unity, saying “the film has stimulated divergent and severe reactions contrary to its very objective. ”

The fact that a major brand, part of the conglomerate once run by Ratan Tata, one of India’s richest and most powerful men, had to withdraw a commercial promoting unity to protect its employees offers a clear example of the disturbing depths we have reached in 2020 under Modi. The ad’s withdrawal led to anger and disillusionment. The 152-year-old iconic business group has been known for its commitment to pluralism and integrity; many tweets and editorials condemned Tata, who is considered the face of the company by many but has stayed a mute spectator through the intimidation.

As I’ve written many times before, these campaigns of hate are generated, circulated and amplified by government supporters, senior officials and prominent news channels alike. A well-meaning ad couldn’t stand in the way of well-funded media corporations tasked with dividing and fanning the flames of division for political gain.

But not everyone has bent the knee. Unlike many invertebrate personalities in India’s business community who have chosen to prostrate themselves before the Modi regime, allowing themselves to be censored and co-opted, there are important exceptions. Bajaj Auto and iconic foods company Parle Products have refused to advertise on channels that broadcast toxic news items that lead to polarization and majoritarian sentiments in the country.

But not all is lost. Indian officials are investigating news channels for fudging viewership numbers. These channels have been consistent in their pro-state activism, spreading misinformation about Indian minorities that gives a shot in the arm to communalism in India.

It will take great political will and a mobilized Indian society to hold these powerful forces accountable. These independent investigations are a powerful bulwark against the further erosion of Indian democracy.

Many still refuse to face the racism and communalism that has permeated and flourished in recent years across virtually all facets of Indian society.

Rahul Gandhi, one of the key leaders of the Indian National Congress, recently tweeted that “the shameful truth is many Indians don’t consider Dalits, Muslims and Tribals to be human.” The tweet sparked outrage, including from many liberals. The tweet came in the wake of the alleged gang rape and killing of a lower-caste young woman in the state of Uttar Pradesh by upper-caste men. Police officers burned the body of the victim in the hopes of making the story and justice vanish. The young woman’s parents were gagged from speaking to either the media or any political party, and members of the ruling party rallied in support of the accused. Gandhi hit a raw nerve and exposed the systemic hate against religious and caste minorities, whose women are the most vulnerable.

The controversy over the ad simply reinforced this: Hindu nationalists were outraged at a Hindu woman exercising her agency to love and be part of a Muslim family, an idea that is anathema to supremacists who hold women as objects that need to be controlled and destroyed to establish their hegemony.

Now the ad has been censored and wiped out from our imagination under a flood of violence, exposing the moral deterioration in our country. I’m sure my building’s security guard agreed with the decision to pull the ad. Many want to deny it, but bigotry and hate are everywhere. Closer than many might want to admit.

Indian society has always been poisoned by hate. It's a complex society that has too many forces that have kept clashing between each other for political, emotional and economic space. Politicians of various hue have taken advantage of this, thus worsening the problem.

There is no point in singling out Modi or the Hindutva brigade. They are the symptom of a malaise, and not the malaise itself.

And Rahul Gandhi needs to shut his trap and introspect about how much his own family and party are responsible for the state of affairs.

Writer is Rana Ayub. Dont need to read a line of this article.

Tanishq tried to spread disinformation. Misrepresented facts.tried to spread false propoganda.

Why the need to bring Hindu religion into your propoganda. Rana Ayub and her coterie may whine as much as they want.

Apart from being a Muslim name - why else should we not believe Rana Ayub?

Its increasing around the world if social media is how one would measure it.

Because she has a habit of lying. She makes up things and then claims them to be facts. She was taken to court and it didn't end well for her there.

The Book by Rana Ayyub is of no utility. It is based upon surmises, conjectures, and suppositions and has no evidentiary value".

This is what the court observed.

Do you disagree that hate against muslims is becoming more and more mainstream in india?

Every body should have a say in the system. Both right wing and left wing.

Just like there was no restrictions in making the ad, likewise no harm if someone voices against it. If you call it hatred, then it's nothing compared to what you see in the eyes of a Muslim when an ahmedi calls himself a Muslim.

Hatred is when someone supports killing of another person on the justification of portraying idol of a prophet.

Why do you think hindus are becoming hateful and what kept them peaceful earlier?

Who knows bro , maybe BJP is playing with their mind psychologically or maybe older generation was already hateful and they passed it on, or maybe everyone is free to be triggered all the time.

Hatred would be when you actually draw a picture of a prophet naked purely to antagonise a minority community. If you don't do that, then where is the hatred?

If hindus refuse to give their daughters into muslim families, its hatred.

What if the daughter decides to go into a Muslim family of her own will? Isn't that how it usually happens anyway? How then does her family have the right to give or take her freedom to marry the person of her choice?

When Hindus marry Christians or Sikhs, nobody cares. But when a Hindu marries a Muslim, it is taken in a very bad light. If groom is a Muslim and bride is a Hindu, then it gets even worse. People cannot look past religion.

Hindu-Muslim couples should set an example by giving up their religion and show to the haters that Love is greater than man made cults.

Obviously practicing Hindutva wouldn't highlight Muslims plight in India and most Hindutva would only believe Hindutva words.

No Muslims will be believed by Hindutva when He/She highlight Muslims plight in India.

Do you think most Muslims are ok "letting" their daughters get married into a Hindu family? This is more to do with culture than anything else.

On the OP, hate had always been there. More platforms to express hate these days. And the current regime has emboldened these people.

there are lot of maybes. without understanding the why, we can never find a solution. ( I don't have the answer as well). What makes indian hindus so easy to be hateful, there must be something about their religion, culture or history which has made them such a vile community.

Who emboldened people to attack mani ratnam for showing a muslim girl marrying a hindu guy?

Who emboldened people to vandalize theatres for showing a sikh guy put sindoor on a muslim girl?

Forceful secularism and pushing it into people's private lives isnt going to work.

Secularism says that the government and religion should be separate that is state should have no religion. And thats where it should end.

If it's more to do with culture, then why are we talking about different religions being an obstacle to marriage? Not really sure why you are asking about what Muslim parents would be ok with, hindus will be using their own standards and should be upfront about it. This is like a Muslim refusing to eat a beefburger because a hindu would never do it.

Quote from the article ...But the video swiftly triggered a wave of threats of physical violence against employees of the jewelry brand.

It's quite sad that you feel its " no harm" that people threatened physical violence as a result of an advertisement. Oddly you bring Muslims and Ahmedis into it despite there being no connection to the article.

Seemingly Hindus can threaten violence all they want in your eyes?

Closet Hindutva, would portray a false sense of equality but there's always underline hypocrisy while calling everyone else a hypocrite.

A lie. Which was busted within hours by the police and FIR was filed against the news channel for fake news.

Rana Ayub ofcourse keeps spreading the propoganda.

Are you saying that that it was a lie that Indian social media flared up with threats against employees of the brand? Even you must realise that will be hard to believe for all but the most blinkered hindu nationalist. Using your own police as proof is not really a convincing proof at all considering they have often been accused of being willing bystanders to waves of hindutva violence.

In India, Indian police will investigate. So whether you are convinced or not isnt going to change the jurisdiction of the police force.

Ignorning the details. Please answer this with a simple yes or no.

Under the BJP has there been an increase in hatred towards Muslims in India?

I feel the cases have increased. Its more in the state of Uttar Pradesh where Yogi is at the helm. Cases of Lynching or mob justice have been occurring too often ever since Yogi Adityanath Government took over.

Thanks.

Are these Yogi characters emboldend by BJP in power? We've read many statements of inciting hate from BJP members? Are you suggesting Yogi's views are not aligned to the BJP's in any way?

Notice, didn't refute the BJP government has influence on the police against minorities of India rather change the direction to obvious about jurisdiction.

Gymnastic with words from BJP supporters.

Yogi Adityanath is the Cheif Minister of UP. I am not very familiar with UP politics, but every since he took over, no positive news ever came from that state. UP had BJP CM's before, but none as bad as this Yogi.

I think the BJP is the bigger issue. These type of Yogi's existed before but the rate of hate has increased since Modi has been in office. This is really bad for Indian society as there seems to be only an increase of hate and not any cooling down of hate.

Imagine if there was a so called Muslim who spread the same hate towards Hindu's as Yogi does towards Muslims? Would it be freedom of speech or a target for lynching?

Do you disagree that hate against muslims is becoming more and more mainstream in india?

Please define hate.

If by hate you mean objections to Ads like this, then its not hate. Its simply protest against misinformation, propoganda and against misleading hindus.

Bjp is in power because the people of India voted them. The Indian society at large was fed up of corrupt politicians who indulged in religious appeasement in the name of secularism.

So called Muslim? There are many such. Start with Owaisi brothers.

who cares if hate is increasing or decreasing as long as they have no issues with this.

You wanna see the definition of hate? Look at the difference between how the Tabligh Jaamat was treated by the Indian media as compared to the various temples that violated the COVID lockdown.

Threats of violence.

Threats weren't lies.

What could have tanishq store employees faced?

"please beta ek apology dedo.... Please"

LOL.

They were threatened. I posted links in our previous convos.

No violence happened tho. That was a lie.

I posted images and proof of it in Corona thread.

I never said physical violence is welcomed. Inside the legal framework, if some one opposes the marriage between Hindu and Muslims, then he should be allowed to speak same as anyone who supports Hindu and Muslim marriage should be allowed to speak.

I gave the example because, I believe ahmedis should be allow to voice their opinion that they are Muslims while non ahmedi Muslims should be allowed to speak that they are not. But the way people reacts when an ahmedi calls himself Muslims, the hatred that is seen, is much bigger and dangerous than above case.

Yeah it’s funny Joshila and co just avoid this topic but continue posting on other issues lol. Anyways it’s good that you and other Indians are noticing the hypocrisy. If enough people speak up maybe things can change a bit.

Stop deflecting. If you want a definition a dictionary is a great place to start. So I will be the 3rd poster in this thread to ask you, is hate against Muslims becoming more mainstream in India? Marks will be deducted for beginning your response with any word other than Yes or No :najam

As it is said, if you want to test someone's character, give him power. hindus have got power since 6 years, and their real character is exposed.

There were protests. No one was harmed. No violence. Shops apologized because their business was being affected. If you dont know then let me tell you that Tanishq has a franchisee model business. Most shops are franchisee owners. Because some idiot in the company decided that he needs to spread false propoganda, these franchisee owners are losing business.

Every year we gift small gold coins to our customers and associates. Its sourced from different jewellers including Tanishq, this year many of our known companies and us wont be sourcing from Tanishq and we decided to communicate it to their marketing guys. Guess what one of the biggest of the companies is a Muslim owned and he too wont buy from Tanishq, he was like " These guys create useless controversy and stroke fire"

So franchisee owners apologizing is due to business loss.

You wanna see the definition of hate? Look at the difference between how the Tabligh Jaamat was treated by the Indian media as compared to the various temples that violated the COVID lockdown.

Most temples had court orders to conduct their festivals.

Tableeghi jamaat people violated visa norms. Threatened violence and the NSA had to intervene to get them to vacate the premises and move to quarantine centers. In those centers they misbehaved with the staff, including femsle staff. Created ruckus etc etc. They were accused and are being tried under various criminal sections and not just breaking covid protocols.

No. Just that muslims political veto has been curtailed.

'No Iota of Evidence': Mumbai Court Acquits 20 Foreign Tablighi Jamaat Members

In two separate orders, a metropolitan court in Mumbai on Monday acquitted 20 foreign nationals who are members of the Tablighi Jamaat, observing that the prosecution has not provided even an iota of evidence to support the allegation that they violated the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

This judgement is only for the foreign ones, not the indian ones.

No.

Hatred has always been an integral part of the Indian psyche - Hatred against Muslims, against christians, against low caste hindus, against high caste hindus, against foreign settled Indians, against rich people, against poor people, against Bollywood stars..... The tendency to blame others for one's own faults is all too established in India, and frustration often results in violence.

It's just that nowadays, the hatred against muslims is being highlighted because of a right-wing hindu government in power. It helps further certain agendas.

It is not like Hindus , Christians, Dalits, and almost every community doesn't face discrimination, hatred or even violence in India. Everyone does. There is a lot of good happening as well.

What kind of hatred have you seen and how are you measuring the levels of hatred. Lets use your random ahmedi example anyway despite it having little relevance to the thread

People called for a boycott of a Uni when an Ahmedi was invited as a guest speaker. The Uni backed down and pulled the plug on him.

Similarly Hindus reacted violently at an ad showing some form of unity between hindus and muslims. The brand canclled the ad.

Sounds remarkably similar but you excuse one and focus on the other.

The bigger issue is that hateful hindus don't care when someone calls them bigots and hatemongers, and either brush it aside or wear it as a badge of honor.

Maybe years of humiliation have made them seek redemption for their emasculation in this way.

Mulana Saab you have actually hit the nail with your last sentence.
I’ve always felt they’re an extremely insecure people lacking self respect and I suppose the humiliation explains it.

there are lot of maybes. without understanding the why, we can never find a solution. ( I don't have the answer as well). What makes indian hindus so easy to be hateful, there must be something about their religion, culture or history which has made them such a vile community.
99% of Hindus live in the sub-continent. Hindus have never ventured out of the safety of the subcontinent to go and conquer other peoples and rule over over them. With the advent of the internet, and now social media, they are starting to learn about the world outside the sub-continent. Especially about the conquests by and empires of the Muslims and Christians, considering that, in the recent past, Muslims and Christians have taken turns to conquer and rule over the Hindus.

So, in a nutshell, it's all due to frustration, with a liberal does of an inferiority complex. Which of course is exacerbated by the feeling that these Muslims and Christians not only made conquests and built grand empires, but that they were/are also better looking (hence why the fixation with lighter skin tones, and Hindu women not venturing out into the sun).

So by that metric it should all be fine and happy with muslims in their countries, descended as they are from these 'empire builders'.

Care to explain why there is so much unrest in the Islamic world then? Why are 'empire building' muslims so frustrated?

The thread is about hate in Hindu society. If you wish to raise a thread about the Islamic world, by all means do so. But don't try to divert the topic of the thread under discussion. Unless of course this attempt to divert the discussion is due to the reasons outlined in my post.

Threats or actual violence
Discrimination
Hateful speech by politicians n joe bloggs in the media
Lynchings
Treatment as 2nd class citizens
Seen and called out as anti national and pro pakistani

Wo sab thik hai but I was addressing a single point of yours.

Threats of violence isn't a lie.

If store owners apologized on their own, that would be different.

Someone barged in and demanded them to apologize.

What do you think would happen if they refuse?

Not like news channels didn't report threats.

By the way, your take on Amit shah's over activism comment?

Good post. Explains why hindus have this chip on their shoulder regarding muslims.

My theory about muslims not liking hindus is because hindus lacked the qualities which muslims appreciate, even in an enemy, like bravery and self respect. Muslims have had fierce battles with Christians, and in the subcontinent, with sikhs, who earned their respect as worthy opponents. While hindus were known for sly nature, the baniya mentality, the chanikya doctrine ( the hindu machiavelli) which the proud and dignified muslims could never respect. Of course, this is only a generalization and there are exceptions.

Interesting. How do you gain such respect? You don’t fight on horses these days.

So is US building respect by bombing the Middle East? Or Hindus gaining respect by beating up someone for cow slaughter or by rioting?

Else they would have 'respected' a predominantly Hindu army that sent them packing in 1971.

Violating the lockdown orders, hundreds of people participated in the Siddhalingeswara temple chariot festival in Chitapur village in Kalburgi area of Karnataka on early Thursday morning.

This is just one example, that a few seconds of googling found.

Did this case get the same attention as the TJ one? Were the participants of this event vilified by the media and blamed for deliberately spreading corona? Did your mainstream news channel do specials bulletins on this? Why is it so hard for you to see the difference in treatment?

Also wasn't the TJ misbehaving thing proven to be fake news? but lets say in a large group there were a few bad apples, did that in your opinion justify terms like "Corona Jihad?

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the officer said that while there have been many reports over the alleged misbehaviour by members of the Tablighi Jamaat, there had been no such thing during the evacuation, she said. “Everything went off smoothly and the members were evacuated in lots of 30-34,” the medical officer said. “We faced no issues,” she added.

Are you guys LARPing or what...? It's pretty cringey when you see Muslims (and other colonisers such as the West) saying this.

First of all, you wouldn't credit the British Empire for being strong, and ruling over so many countries, you'd call it what it was- colonialism. But when it's your group, it's suddenly okay.

Secondly, I'd say the ones who kept hold of their ancestral culture and beliefs (even though I think they're untrue) is more commendable than those who adopted the beliefs of the coloniser.

Anyway, there certainly is a hate problem in India, not disputing that.

This judgement is only for the foreign ones, not the indian ones.
cricketjoshila was talking about how TJ violated visa norms. How would the Indians one violate visa norms?

So the visa violation bit turns out to be a lie to, if posters like CJ still can't see the extend they were lied to by the media than I don't think anything can make them see.

Interesting. How do you gain such respect? You don’t fight on horses these days.

So is US building respect by bombing the Middle East? Or Hindus gaining respect by beating up someone for cow slaughter or by rioting?

No, they are not gaining respect, as the fight is unequal. In fact, with lynching, hindus are only affirming the image that they attack in mobs.

Threats or actual violence
Discrimination
Hateful speech by politicians n joe bloggs in the media
Lynchings
Treatment as 2nd class citizens
Seen and called out as anti national and pro pakistani

Threats and violence happen from both sides.
Hate speech? Again comes from both sides.
Which rights do muslims not have that hindus have in India? I can give several rights which oy muslims enjoy.

Regarding lynchings, i can give example of muslims killing hindus because they didn't convert to islam.

When and where did it happen? Please give those examples.
