'He looks disillusioned. There are things happening behind the scenes we don't know about': Pietersen on Warner-SRH saga

Former England captain Kevin Pietersen feels for David Warner and what he is going through at Sunrisers Hyderabad. Captain of the franchise for four and a half seasons, Warner led SRH to their maiden IPL title win in 2016. However, things went awry and following poor form and the team's abysmal campaign in the first half of IPL 2021, the left-handed batsman was removed from captaincy.

When the tournament resumed last month, Warner was expected to brush off his poor form and spark SRH's revival. But neither happened and after two games – where he scored 0 and 2 – Warner was dropped from the XI. If the worst is to be believed, Warner could well have played his last match for SRH, with the Australia opener dropping a hint in reply to a comment on his Instagram handle earlier this week.

Weighing in on the matter, Pietersen called the entire development an unfortunate event. With all that Warner has achieved with SRH – including winning the Purple Cap on three different occasions, the turmoil between the franchise and Warner is tough to witness, reckons Pietersen.

"David Warner just is Sunrisers Hyderabad, so it’s disheartening to see his love affair with the franchise unravelling like this. He has scored so many runs for them over the years, captained them to the title, and has been at the heart and soul of everything that they do," he wrote in his blog of Betway Insider.'

After the team had slumped to five losses in six games in the first phase of the IPL, Warner was replaced by Kane Williamson as the team's captain and dropped from the Playing XI for the very next contest. It was then that cracks were believed to have surfaced. In fact, ahead of one of SRH's recent games, Warner did not even travel with the team to the stadium and stayed back at his hotel room.

"He looks totally disillusioned now, and there are clearly things happening behind the scenes that we don’t know about," added Pietersen.

Warner won the Orange Cap with SRH in 2015, 2017 and in 2019, scoring 562, 641 and 692 runs respectively. In 2016, he had burned up the charts scoring 848 runs, second-highest behind Virat Kohli's 973 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore.

This is Franchise Cricket. When you don't deliver you get shown the door and are sidelined.

Brendon Mccullam was a gun captain and player for New Zealand but disastrous for Lahore Qalandars who wasted no time in sacking him

That was clear even in in the 1st leg.. Think Warner/team issue started with Paydey dropped from the team first leg, Warner want him in the team (bcs lack of option) but team decided against this..

Hope he'll be picked by CSK next season, will be perfect franchise for him..

Lol Warner is ATG for SRH/IPL..

Malinga was way past it by the time.. Actually MI did play over the hill malinga..

I know. But they still pushed him out for one season. And Warner is 34, so its not like he is in his prime anymore.

But point is when you're paying that much for a player, you expect him to deliver. There's no shortage of great T20 openers in the world who would be happy to take Warner's place for much less money.

Warner has not been anywhere near the same player since coming back from his ban minus that bonanza series he had against a raw inexperienced Pakistani bowling attack with a clueless captain Azhar Ali and think tank in Misbah and Waqar

Tbf KP they all look disillusioned. Playing bland cricket in front of empty seats for a tournament that doesn't matter beyond the basic dollar signs...we have QDK barely striking at 116 and averaging something like 30, AB is ranked 18th in terms of run scorers having played 13 games with B list Indian batters having scored more than him in 1 fewer game. What does that tell you ? The bowling charts don't look any better, Boult for example has just 12 wickets at 30...that would be bad in an ODI tournament let alone T20.

these foreign players are here for the quick buck, a vacation and time off the international field. That's it.

Lol this post is surely disillusioned.. And big lol at the time off the intl field.. Certain team even choose ipl over intl game..

I'm confused, maybe you typed fast or your english is not great, what is wrong with the post? The foreign players are in the IPL to steal a living, not earn it with great performances. I quoted several stats.

This topic has been debated to death my friend. Unless someone is doing charity, every cricketer...every sportsman plays for money. You think Christiano Ronaldo plays for Man U bcoz he loves Manchester? The fact that IPL pays 10 times the amount international cricket pays them, hence best of best plays in this league.

Also who told you they are here for quick vacation? You done any survey to reach such conclusion lol. If a player dont perform he will be benched and subsequently removed like in the case of Warner. So they have to always on top of their game to be a part of this daddy league and earn million bucks.

You just made my point for me...they are here for money but IPL is so meaningless to them that they don't care to perform, which is very different to Ronaldo who actually wants to perform, or Messi, or Salah, or Sterling etc etc, there is no equivalence between IPL and European football.

And there is no point in someone being benched after 10+ games.

You are making wrong comparison. Club over country is the accepted norm in football. Stats in EPL/La Liga etc are considered relevant by football pandits/fans etc to judge best player out there. Messi is yet to win WC but still regarded as the GOAT, that is because of his stint with Barcelona. Cricket recently switched to club format. Pollard/Malik have scored over 10k runs in T20 but i still haven't heard anyone calling them a legend/great of the game. Test cricket is still considered the pinnacle of performance in cricket if not all fans but atleast by serious pundits.

Thats what I am asking, how do you know they are here only for money and not to perform? If they dont perform they wont even get picked. So their performance is directly affecting their pay cheques.

Infact there is more incentive to perform in IPL than international cricket bcoz the leeway is very less. Only 4 foreign players are allowed and you have to be on top of your game always to get picked. A player like Warner would never get benched for Australia for few failures but in IPL he dont have that leeway. They need to be on top of their game always to be considered in the team and earn money.

I did not make the comparison, I was replying to rajdeep and if you read my post, you will find I agree with you. Club cricket is near meaningless and that is why foreign players are stealing a living in the IPL. Some of these performances in IPL 2021 have been shockingly bad!

That is because it is probably too early. Times are changing and soon the T20 cricketers will be more popular than Test batsmen. You will less of younger generation opting to watch 5 days of Test cricket but they don't mind watching the electric T20 matches.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made a shocking call during the India leg of the Indin Premier League (IPL) 2021 by sacking and dropping their skipper David Warner. The left-handed batsman was out-of-form and was benched after scoring 193 runs in 6 matches.

Warner, who was expected to stay on the bench in the UAE leg as well, made his return in the final XI in Jonny Bairstow's absence. But his stay in the XI didn't last long and was once again dropped after he only managed 2 runs in as many matches.

After being dropped, Warner had revealed that he won't be travelling to the stadium again. After missing one fixture, Warner was seen in the stadium and was spotted cheering for the Orange Army with a flag in his hand.

While Warner's form is certainly a reason behind his axing, Sanjay Manjrekar has said that there is a non-cricketing reason behind this. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, the noted commentator said: "Reason has to be non-cricketing. Warner's numbers over the last few years have been just mind-boggling. I think he is the best IPL batter we have ever seen with regards to longevity."

"His poor form has not been going on for so long that Warner gets dropped on batting form. So, it has to be a non-cricketing reason and we have no idea what that is. That is the other thing I don't understand, why everything is so hush-hush, but there is something definitely going wrong there," he added.

Apart from struggling on the batting front, Warner also struggled on the captaincy front as SRH only managed 1 win in 6 matches they played under him in India. He was replaced by Kane Williamson, who had captained the side in 2018 and 2019. Williamson too has struggled on the captaincy front and SRH have only managed 1 win in y6 matches under him.

While Warner's stay in SRH look set to end after IPL 2021, it remains to be seen if they retain Williamson or not. Under him, SRH played the final of IPL 2018 and made it to the 2nd around next year. He was replaced by Warner before IPL 2020.

David Warner should move to a franchise that doesn't undermine his ability and performances.

Williamson captaining is a joke.

He seemed quite happy sat in the stands waving a SRH flag?

As long as the cheques are being cashed Warner will have no problem being a cheerleader.

As long as the cheques are being cashed Warner will have no problem being a cheerleader.

Exactly my point. These guys are stealing a living. Hats off to Maxwell but he is hardly a top level cricketer. The top level international stars with lots of non T20 options turn up for a pay check.

As long as the cheques are being cashed Warner will have no problem being a cheerleader.

But only cheerleading wont give him the pay cheques. He need to perform too...else will lose the spot. Have you ever thought from this angle?

Point is every sportsman plays for money and cricketers are no different. But the shell life of a sportsperson is so less that they have to be always on top of their game to keep the pay cheque flowing. Only cheerleading will unfortunately wont help in a league like IPL.

Warner is a marketers dream in the IPL, Australian player who gets involved with the tik tok bollywood rubbish, he will be picked up by another franchise if he leaves SRH with no further performances of note.

No wonder why he looked so happy waving his flag, he knows his worth to the indians.

A lot of franchises will be rubbing their hands to have Warner in their side next year. He will most likely captain some other team next year. But it is true that he is a bit past his prime now and we might see him retiring from international cricket pretty soon.

Given that IPL has spoonfeded a number of average Australian cricketers( there is a guy in RCB- Dan Christian, he just gets picked for superstitious reason that if he plays, RCB will win), Warner will continue to rule the chart in IPL over next 5 years atleast.

baseless.
Probably you have forgotten what Warner has done for SRH. Probably you are jesting. for sure we cannot undermine the his service to his franchise.

I think you misunderstood the comment, the fact that he has done whatever for SRH means he now has the license to wave flags around and cash cheques, add to that the social media stuff that comes with him and it will give him that license for the next few seasons at least be it at SRH or another franchise regardless of his further perfromances on the pitch.

Ok, I can see the point if you are saying that he was waving flag so that he satisfies his Indian social media followers. But you implied that he will be picked up by another franchise because of his bollywood tik tok.

No not at all he has performed previously, no question about that, but the original comment i was responding to said Warner would lose his spot soon if he didnt perform.

What i was trying to say is his previous performance, the fact he is australian, and his antics on tik tok, will mean he can be a cheerleader for atleast another 2 or 3 more years , franchises will be queuing up to sign him next season regardless of performance.

Franchises are smart and will persist with Warner because of his cricketing skills and not Tik tok.
Also they may not persist at all because their strategy has no space for Warner.

MI and CSK are the only 2 franchisees that give room for their star players to go through a rut and come out on top of it. Which is why they have the most titles.

Warner needs to go to MI or CSK, an environment where you're not doubted is the only place where you can really come back and once Warner does, he can really do it all alone.

SRH have every right to expect more from Warner, but clearly they've handled the handover from Warner to Williamson in the worst possible fashion, the team just look defeated, it's almost as if the camp isn't a happy group.

Warner has been a shadow of the player he once was since his comeback minus the series against Pakistan. He is not worth the hype.

Warner sacking was definitely bcs of non-cricketing reason.. prior to his sacking he was scored 190odd with 2 fifties, his str bit low but he's performing compared to other SRH players..

IPL 2021: David Warner shares photo in CSK jersey, deletes it later

David Warner had a torrid time in the second leg of IPL 2021, where he was dropped from the SRH playing XI after a string of low scores.

Out of favour Sunrisers Hyderabad batter David Warner sent out a post on Instagram, which the cricketer took down minutes after sharing it.

The post featured Warner carrying his daughter on the shoulders while donning the Chennai Super Kings jersey, which the cricketer claimed was made by a fan, who requested him to share it.

Warner had a torrid time in the second leg of IPL 2021, where he was dropped from the playing XI after a string of low scores. Earlier in the season he was replaced as the SRH captain, with New Zealand's Kane Williamson filling up the position.

Towards the latter phase of the league stage, Warner was seen attending matches from the stands instead of the dugout.

The left-handed batter has admitted that he would love to continue playing for SRH but believes he won't be retained by the franchise in the next auction.

“I would love nothing more than to represent SunRisers but obviously, that decision is with the owners," Warner told Sports Today.

He also revealed that getting dropped as the team leader was hard, calling it a "bitter pill to swallow."

“With the utmost respect for the owners, Trevor Baylis, Laxman, Moody and Murali, when a decision gets made, it has to be a unanimous one. You don’t know who the person is going for you and who isn’t."

“Especially when you have played about 100 games for the franchise, I think I had four bad games in those first five matches in Chennai. It is difficult, a tough pill to swallow. There are still questions to which I think I’ll never get answers, but you have to move on," he added.

Looks like the flirting has started, SRH probably told him they are moving on from him.

RCB could revive him like they did maxwell aswell will be interesting to see how this plays out.

For him best option CSK.. They like experienced oldies and they'll stick with him even after couple of failures..

If I were Warner, I would decline to play for SRH again.

He has been disrespected.

As a professional, you cannot take these things personally. They have been very good to him for a while in the past and he has been paid very handsomely above FMV for all these years. If you don't perform in T-20 Cricket then you have to take the bad with the good. This is ultimately a business. I wish some of our PSL Franchise owners were this ruthless in their decision making.

Seems to have regained his touch today with 50 at a good strike-rate against Sri Lanka.

Australia star David Warner is officially back in the runs after notching an important half-century in the team’s win over Sri Lanka.

Under the microscope after a lean run, Warner was back to his best against Sri Lanka, making 65 off 42 to help give Australia a second win on the bounce in their Super 12 group in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

The opener had posted scores of 0, 2, 0, 1 and 14 heading into this match across various T20 levels but revealed after the game he thought talk of him being out of form was premature.

"I actually think people talking about my form is quite funny. I laugh at the matter," he said on Wednesday. "I've played hardly any cricket. I had two games in the IPL and then warm-up games are warm-up games for a reason.

"Tonight, I had to obviously start fresh. Everyone was talking about my form, which I reiterated was not a thing I was worried about. It was about going out there and starting well. That's all we're trying to do, apply pressure to the bowlers."

Nevertheless, he said his innings against Sri Lanka was not about silencing the doubters.

“Shutting the critics down? No, never,” he said. “That's the world of sport. When you ride the highs, you've got to ride the lows; you've got to stay confident, keep a smile on your face and never let it get to you.”

Warner enjoyed one key slice of luck in the match when he was dropped on 18 off a gloved pull that lobbed up to the keeper.

It was a life he made the most of, smashing 10 fours before eventually perishing in 15th over with Australia needing only another 25 runs to win in 30 deliveries.

Encouragingly for Australia, Warner was not the only man in the runs, with captain Aaron Finch producing his most fluid innings since returning from knee surgery. In an opening stand that brought Australia 70 runs by the seventh over, Finch smashed 37 off 23 deliveries.

Warner enjoyed seeing his opening partner hit his straps.

“For us, it was really important to have a nice stable base, and seeing Finchy play straight down the ground and that nice back cut, that's nice and still. It means you're watching the ball. It means your weight is going through the ball.

“It's the same process with myself. You've got to have a nice stable base on these wickets.

“When people take pace off the ball, you've got to wait for the ball. When there's pace on it, then you can sit on it.

“That was the key tonight, and I think he was really stable. Hitting the ball back over the bowler is always a very good sign of a player who's in nice touch”

If the pair stay in the runs from here, Australia will be firmly among the frontrunners for the trophy.

They now sit second in their group, behind England only on net-run-rate. The two sides will meet this Saturday in Dubai, with the winner moving to the top of the table.

Warner’s T20I form

David Warner may not be having a good time in the domestic T20s – he scored only 195 runs at a strike-rate of 107.73 for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL this year and was dropped after two games during the UAE leg of the league – but for Australia he has been in a stunning form since his comeback in 2019.

The 35 years old scored a match-winning 65 off 42 balls against Sri Lanka in Dubai. Since 2019, he has amassed 552 runs in T20Is at an average of 78.85 and a strike-rate of 138.34 and hit one hundred and six half-centuries. There is no country apart from Sri Lanka against who he has over 500 runs in T20Is whereas his last four scores against the Islanders are (most recent first): 65 in Dubai, 57 not out in Melbourne, 60 not out in Brisbane and 100 not out in Adelaide. Overall, he has 512 runs against Sri Lanka at an average of 56.88 and a strike-rate of 138.75.

David Warner said that he was given no explanation over his exile from SRH

Over the last 2-3 seasons, Sunrisers Hyderabad have looked like a team on the decline. In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season, the team arguably hit their lowest point in the tournament's history, finishing bottom with just 3 wins in 14 games.

The season also saw a bitter exile of skipper David Warner, with Kane Williamson replacing him as captain and other overseas players in the playing XI. Reflecting on how the entire saga transpired, Warner said that he was hurt with how things unfolded.

"When you are dropped from the team you have loved the most for years without any real fault of yours and stripped of captaincy without being given a reason, it hurts," Warner was quoted as saying by Economic Times.

The nature of Warner's performance in IPL 14 also saw his spot in the Australian team in the T20 World Cup 2021 being questioned. Skipper Aaron Finch, however, backed Warner and persisted with him throughout the tournament.

"At the same time there are no complaints. The fans in India have always been there for me and it is for them that you play. We play to entertain. We play to push for excellence," Warner added.

While there's no denying that Warner was struggling to score runs with his usual pace, that did not stop him from working hard in the nets to rediscover the lost touch.

"Whatever may have been the reason for me not finding a spot in an IPL team, I can tell you I was training the hardest I ever did. I didn’t not miss a single day. I was batting extremely well in the nets and it was only a matter of time before it all started to work out. So yes, while it hurt, I knew I will have another opportunity," Warner said.

Warner went on to bag the player of the tournament award, scoring 289 runs in total. The Aussie opener feels it was only a matter of time before runs started flowing from his bat.

"Even in the final, if you see, I had scored 25 of 25 balls before I pushed on. That’s how things shape up on occasions. From the very start of the innings, I was middling the ball and was feeling good in the middle."

The 35-year-old is now set to leave the franchise ahead of the IPL 2022 auction and start a new chapter in his otherwise glorious career in the T20 league.

Not sure what he's complaining about. He is still getting paid the same. Take the money and run, David.

And the "team you love the most" should be Australia, not some popcorn IPL team.

I was hounded by certain types of fans on here when I said Warner was stealing a living in the IPL....but that was exactly true. Did anyone see the intent and dedication for his league side that he showed for Aus. I get it, it's international v club and international passion will always win but Warner looked COMPLETELY disinterested in the IPL. He was happier sitting waving a flag and getting paid big bucks.

Finally, the day to release the list of retained and released players has arrived and the fans' queries will be answered by the end of the day. The franchises have until 12:00 PM IST to make the final decision. After they submit the list to the BCCI, the board will be releasing an official statement, which will also include the details regarding the purses of the franchises.

Before the official announcement, David Warner has confirmed his exit from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The former SRH skipper has often hinted at moving from the franchise. And this time, he confirmed that the franchise won't retain him. Responding to a fan on Instagram, Warner confirmed his exit on Monday (November 29). Check out his response -

SRH's only IPL-winning captain so far, Warner struggled in IPL 2021 and was dropped from the playing XI after he managed 193 runs in 6 matches. He was also sacked from captaincy.

The left-handed batsman did make his comeback to the final XI in the UAE leg but was benched again after managing 2 runs in as many matches.

Warner made a solid comeback in T20 World Cup 2021 and scored 289 runs in 7 matches. Courtesy of his performance in the ICC event, the veteran batsman can very well go on to hit a jackpot in IPL 2022 mega auction. He is also a veteran captain and can be given that role as well. It remains to be seen if any of the 2 new teams picks him before the auction or not.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that SRH have retained their skipper Kane Williamson. Williamson had replaced Warner after he was sacked. He also led the team in IPL 2018 and 2019. The Orange Army made it to the final of IPL 2018 while they made it to the playoffs next year.

SRH will have to pay Williamson Rs 14 crore if he is the team's only retention.

The truth is that DW has not been the same cricketer since the ball tampering incident in South Africa. Not so much in terms of his performance, which has dipped at times but has also attained some notable highs. More his conduct and motivations. He doesn’t carry himself in the same way. Possibly because he was well on the way to becoming the Australian captain, but that is now an impossibility for him.

Lol thats why he held almost all SRH batting records..

David Warner has had a bittersweet 2021. He was a fulcrum of the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) before his relationship with the franchise went sour. The 35-year-old Warner, who led the Hyderabad-based outfit to its maiden title win back in 2016, was sacked as captain midway through the last year's IPL edition. To fan the flames of disruption in the franchise, Warner was also dropped from the team's Playing XI.

Lifting the T20 World Cup would have perhaps provided some respite to him but Warner was "hurt" after the axing. The southpaw was not happy with the manner in which he was discarded by the team.

“If you are going to drop a captain and then not pick him in the team after what he has done, what message does that send to the young kids in the team? What message does that send to the rest of the group? What hurt me the most is that the other guys are now thinking, ‘oh, this could happen to me’," said Warner on the chat show Backstage with Boria.

“At the end of the day, whatever happens, cop it cop it on the chin. If you want to have those conversations, just have them. It’s not hard. Don’t shy away from them. I am not going to bite. I am going to sit here and accept that for what it is because you are not picking me in the team," he further added.

Warner also pointed out the significance of "icon players", which help in the growth of a team as a brand. He also talked about the effect of his unceremonious exit on the SunRisers Hyderabad fans. The franchise endured a disastrous season in IPL 2021 as they failed to make it to the playoffs, managing only three wins in 14 games.

“It was the pain that I knew was going to hit the fans. They are what makes a franchise. They grow your brand. The greatest teams in the world have icon players. I have been there for a long time. Kane Williamson has been there for a long time, so has Bhuvneshwar. You build a brand and you move forward with that brand.."

Warner led SRH in the first six games of the season before being sacked from captaincy for leading them to just one win. The star opener was replaced by Kane Williamson as the captain of the side and was left out of the Playing XI for the side's seventh game of the tournament.

“They really felt it and it hurts me because I am passionate about where I play. I will connect in any way I can with the fans because I know how important fans are. Those kids in the playground wanting to be Sachin, Virat, myself, Williamson, Steve Smith - you name those players, they want to be us. We have to connect with them. If they see something like that, it hurts them," he added.

With Sunrisers Hyderabad, controversies don't seem to end. After a tumultuous 2021 season that saw the team management falling out with then-captain David Warner, another bitter separation is seemingly coming to light. Simon Katich, the former Australian cricketer who had joined the SRH as an assistant coach ahead of the new edition, has reportedly left his role.

According to a report from Australia's ‘The Telegraph," Katich wasn’t particularly happy with how the team was being managed and further felt that the pre-auction plans were “disregarded.”

Since the last season, Trevor Bayliss and Brad Haddin have also departed as coaches.

For IPL 2022, former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody would be coaching the franchise and he had brought Simon Katich on board as the assistant coach. Kane Williamson, who was retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction, will be leading the side in IPL 2022.

Earlier in the previous season, Warner was initially dropped from the team in the first phase of the tournament in India and was later removed as captain of the side. The Aussie left-hander didn't feature for the SRH in the closing stages of the tournament and furthermore, didn't travel with the squad as well. On the field, the side's struggles continued as it finished at the bottom of the table with only three wins in 14 matches.

Warner was bought by the Delhi Capitals in the IPL mega auction.

In the mega auction held last week, Sunrisers Hyderabad picked up the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Washington Sundar, Aiden Markram, and Marco Jansen among others.

SunRisers Hyderabad squad for IPL 2022: Kane Williamson, Umran Malik, Abdul Samad, Washington Sundar, Nicholas Pooran, T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Priyam Garg, Rahul Tripathi, Abhishek Sharma, Kartik Tyagi, Shreyas Gopal, Jagadeesha Suchith, Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen, Romario Shepherd, Sean Abbott, R Samarth, Shashank Singh, Saurabh Dubey, Vishnu Vinod, Glenn Phillips, Fazalhaq Farooqi.
