Salam/Hi

I need help to try and get rid of some weight off my bat. It's only 2.9/2.10 (don't know the exact weight) but I want it to be 2.7/2.6ish.

I have heard that sanding the bat works quite well, but do I need an electric sander or sand paper? If sand paper, rough or fine?

Sorry for the onslaught of questions. I appreciate any help I advance.

JazakallahKhair/ Thanks.

i found this website just for you! aha http://www.ehow.com/how_5025735_make-cricket-bat-lighter.html

Woah thanks a lot.

But just one problem, I'm going to sound so stupid, but what's a 'plane'?

Thanks.

its pretty much a tool that is found in wood/metal workshops. waht it does is that it sits on a piece of wood and you push back and forth ( like a rolling pin ) and what it does is peel layers off the wood

Is this the thing you're talking about?

Ah okay, but do you think I could do it without it and just sandpaper.
probably , but its gona take a long time and a buttload of arm muscles, gonna get pretty tiring. i use to do woodwork so i have used a plane before and it was so easy to use. or you could take it to your nearest cric specialist and maybe they could do it for you

Yeah I might pop down to the cricket store and see if they'll do it for me. Or there's this guy at my club who is amazing at bat refurbs and that sort of thing and he'll do it for free so I might ask him.

Thanks for your help.

BTW, is the pic I posted the plane?

If that guy can do you a free refurb then ask him because that would be a good option other than what Johng said but then you'd be losing mositure content so I won't recommend that. With refurb they sand like mad so bat gets a bit lighter

Whenever you think it has gotten light.

Which bat is it if you don't mind me asking?

The fake Ice. I've taken the stickers off it now, and it looks even better. I wish I had done it earlier though because now the outline of the stickers is left. :pissed:

It's what I'm doing bhai. :)

Also I am using quite fine sand paper atm, but if I use coarse sand paper do you think it will take less time to lose it's weight?

Urghhhhhhh. I've been sanding for about an hour now and it feels as though the bat has lost no weight. :pissed:

Use 80 or 100 grit sandpaper to reduce the weight and then gradually work your way up to 400 grit to give the bat a smooth finish.

You are not going to lighten the bat by more than one ounce using sandpaper.

You need to use a knife (dont know what its called), watch some videos of bat making on you tube to get the idea.

YOU ARE WASTING YOUR TIME SANDING!

Chuck it on a treadmill for a while

Nah seriously use a plane. The picture you posted is a picture of a plane.

Thanks guys, and bigfan, yeah I realised I was wasting my time after 1 hour of sanding LOL.

I've got training tomorrow so I will ask the guy, or I'll head down to a woodshop to get a plane.

JazakallahKhair.

mann be carefull whenever i sandpaper my old bats thet would always go plank :(

hehehe did you have to do it for school?

sandpaper = insanity!

electric sander + low grit paper is what you want.
You will use at least 3-4 sheets so prepare in advance.

to smooth it use hight grate paper to finish;

Look for a mouse sander- v cheap and normally comes with few free sandpaper sheets to fit.

Josh, I just looked in a woodwork store, and dude, the plane costs £30!!!

And Cricketismylife, even an electric sander costs almost £30 in B&Q!!!

I think 2nd one but again you need good skills to shave the bat properly I don't think it is very easy to use plane if you are beginner.

actually, it is pretty easy when you get the hang of it which does not take long at all, but yeah, practice makes perfect :)

Reducing the weight of the bat through sanding using mouse sander, what are the next steps? Does the top shredded surface needs to be re-oiled? If i want to polish to get the original finish of the bat, which polish do I use?

Thanks for suggestions in advance.
