Possibly identity crisis it certainly isn't the quality of the game...

Cricket is a top quality sport bro. Fast bowling, leg spin, batting even fielding are all unique skills which are very hard to master (hence why not as popular as other global sports).

Don't mix quality with popularity.

Cricket is only popular in a few countries, so its not surprising that Sharapova did not know who he was. 98 % of people in the US would have no idea who he is today, and the other 2% would most likely be from the subcontinent or the Caribbean.
