PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry was arrested outside his residence in Lahore in the early hours of Wednesday, according to his family.

“He was taken away from outside his house at 5:30am in four cars that did not have any number plates,” Faisal Chaudhry, the PTI leader’s brother, told Dawn.com over the phone.

He said that the family was unaware of Fawad’s location. “We are also not being given any details of the FIR (first information report) registered against him.”

Faisal termed his brother’s arrest “illegal” and asserted that he will fight this battle in court.

Fawad’s arrest comes an hour after he, along with scores of party workers, gathered outside PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s Zaman Park residence in Lahore, claiming to avert the government’s alleged plan to arrest the party chief.

An official PTI Twitter account also posted a couple of videos, showing a convoy of police vehicles which the party claimed was carrying Chaudhry after his arrest.

FIR
A first information report has been registered against the PTI leader at the Kohsar police station in Islamabad on the complaint of Secretary of the Election Commission Umar Hameed.

The complaint — a copy of which is available with Dawn.com — invokes sections 153-A (promotion of enmity between groups), 506 (criminal intimidation), 505 (statement conducing to public mischief) and 124-A (sedition) of the Pakistan Penal Code at Islamabad’s Kohsar Police Station.

It stated that Chaudhry, in a speech outside PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s house, threatened the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and said that “those who become part of the caretaker government [in Punjab] will be pursued until they are punished”.

Later in a tweet, the Islamabad police said that Fawad tried to “incite violence against a constitutional institution” and “inflame the sentiments of the people”.

It added that the case will be processed as per the law.

Condemnation

Earlier today, PTI leader Farrukh Habib confirmed that Fawad was taken into custody from his residence. “This imported government has gone berserk,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile, former federal minister Hammad Azhar said Fawad had been taken to the counter-terrorism department’s regional office in Lahore, as PTI leader Ali Muhammad Khan said that he is not a terrorist.

Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said Fawad’s arrest was a “strong slap on the face of democracy and rule of law”.

PTI’s Ali Zaidi also strongly condemned the arrest of the senior party leader and said the government was “hell-bent on pushing this country towards anarchy!”

“Pakistan has become a lawless state at the hands of these lawbreaking lawmakers and corrupt law enforcement officers,” Zaidi tweeted.

This is shocking and real dictatorship is being implemented. What did he do? Only fault is that he supports Imran Khan. The PDM and its handlers are out of control. They are pushing for anarchy after losing the trust of the people.

In Pakistan once the establishment decides you are persona non gratta the you are toast. The levels of persecutions being faced by PTI have never been faced by PML-N and PPP ever.

The establishment has decided that time has come to take PTI head on. Under the interim Punjab CM and the Punjab IG, PTI would be persecuted and its leaders would be jailed.

The biggest mistake Khan made resigning from the NA and then dissolving the assemblies. The PTI is effectively outside the game with these two moves.

The PDM strengthened its position by appointing Mohsin Naqvi as Punjab CM. He is anti-PTI and he would persue criminal cases against PTI. Imran Khan is such a novice!

PDM didn't appoint him. We all know who appointed him and such a person would have been appointed whenever the elections are.

It is rather now or then. The whole system has been hijacked.

Why do you need comment from someone who has clearly been telling lies and has been exposed multiple times on sam forum.

Herw we go some people have no shame.

its not me who is saying, its the constitution. When he delayed the VONC he violated the constitution and we all know what it means if you violate it.

Massively corrupt filthy politicians like Sharifs and Zardari who have destroyed Pakistan and oppressed the masses for decades are roaming freely while we have shameless police and judiciary doing absolutely nothing against them.

Pathetic system of Pakistan.

Resigning was a massive error in judgement.

Now the whole political apparatus will be used against PTI.

Imran thought that he could shame PDM into calling elections but the reality is that they are a shameless bunch and the approach would never have worked.

But here's the crux. At some point the country has to have an election..and every day that goes by PTI becomes inevitable. With IK or without..this is all adhoc short termism.

It's only a matter of how much dhandli can they get away with..but overall I think you are probably right. At the same time everything had been left bare in front of the people..nothing is hidden now and a long term seed has been planned.. let me tell youbthe next Khan that comes and it won't be that long won't be as compromising..

It depends on the establishment's flavour of the month, the police and the judiciary are simply pawns. A couple of years back the Nooras and Zardaris were exiled out of the country and has judicial cases stacked up against them. The real king makers decide , who rules or who rues!

What a stupid post..I mean honestly..no wonder the country is going to the dogs

Not once has ik denounced ttp , afghan taliban and their civilians making mockery of an intl border .

Not once

Infact he wrote a book about these people called warrior race .

You do know ttp want their own governance and fata to be taken out of kpk.

Since usa has left what jihad are these taliban now fighting ? Before people were blaming usa and India their not there anymore.

Considering our balls are held up by the usa west and their aid and banking institutions and their puppets the prince's and Kings of gcc what do you want our military to do exactly have large ungoverned lands and these Afghans marauding across pakistan above the law .
Pakistan would be sanctioned the next day.

It's simple Afghans and fata won't accept intl border and pakistan law they attack our military and police every day .

It's same with baloch they just want freedom to continue their smuggling and criminal activities and then attack our troops every day.

So what do you want military to do listen to khan and hand all these areas over.

These Afghans just don't live there they are resident in all our major cities . They even live in interior sindh where even punjabis would never migrate to

Not only that in pindi district areas islamabad and karachi they have taken over land and fields.

Pakistan is a poor country its not our job to feed and let 40 million Afghans to leach off us and our resources .

Every other country turkey iran central Asia Europe has been rounding these Afghans up.

But our messiah has other ideas

according to the constitution, Imran khan should be hanged.

For what exactly? You are an apologist for fascists and this disaster you crooks have destroyed PK in 9 months. Not a single god thing has come from your dalliance with the Generals.

Khan was in power in Punjab and KP, with a combined population of 140 million and had the whole state apparatus behind him but he dissolved the assemblies in these two provinces. Worst decision ever in the world’s political history. Now, all state machinery wijj be used against PTI.

Stop deluding yourself and lying. If you anything would have charged with. You had the whole establishment and the SC with you, all the dirty players were on board but you had nothing. You even charged him with terrorism so this would have been game set and match.

IK needs to have a succession plan for PTI in place. If he wants the party to progress into the future and carry forward the agenda then there needs to be a visible hierarchy in place. Otherwise its easy for the powers that be to break the movement by simply taking down a couple of key players. One can hate the Nooras but even after Nawaz was exiled Mariam kept fighting the family cause along with his brother & family. Im not saying IK needs to promote his sons or immedeate family, but a future corp of youngsters need to become the face of future PTI.

Even if this fight outlasts IK, it shouldnt outlast the PTI.

Surely he is inciting rebellion? Civil war?

So stating the obvious on EC and its corrupt behaviour is inciting civil war? Some of these post get sillier by the day.

It's getting to the point where I think some people just can't think critically or beyond their tiny egos..

Peaceful protest.

Very simple.

I hope he isnt compromising in the future either.

I think his attempts to compromise have let him down thus far.

Unfortunately, Pakistanis only respond to dhanda and power.

Voluntarily sacrificing his power had zero impact. Majority of qoum are lotas and will automatically drift to the new guys in power.

I think the aim by the chors is to attempt to finish the big names in PTI in case they take Khans place as leading the party .

It won’t matter this is the final few months of them in charge forever

Simple- keep the pressure on for elections that are free and fair. You may enjoy your crooks enjoying their time back in office but 1971 was similar. The people for one man and the establishment and ZAB stole their mandate.

Do you agree with me that the Nooras and the establishment dont want an election at any cost and if they have to, they will look to win at all costs whether that involves arresting the opposition and any one else that gets in their way or just brute force rigging, will be become clear in time. We are under Millitary rule where the mafia families are fronts as puppets.

I think that if any thing happens to IK then it wont be peaceful protest. The establishment are determined not to give up power to the people of PK.

They are playing with fire. The same jawans that prop them up also respect khan. We don't want a situation where we get an internal coup.

IK just has to keep the pressure on. How many can they arrest. Sooner or later maidan may aana ho gaa..

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday dismissed a plea to recover arrested Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry, terming the case "no longer admissible".

LHC’s Justice Tariq Saleem was hearing a plea seeking Fawad’s recovery from the "illegal and unlawful confinement" by Punjab's Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

Police failed to produce the PTI leader in court after which the LHC summoned the inspectors general of Punjab and Islamabad to determine which force had taken Fawad into custody.

Fawad Chaudhry was arrested in the wee hours of the day on charges of sedition and "inciting violence against a constitutional institution".

But, later in the evening, the inspector general of Punjab police told the court that Islamabad police had taken Fawad into custody and had taken transitory remand of the PTI leader.

A magisterial court in Cantt Lahore approved Fawad's transitory remand to the Islamabad police hours after the capital's Kohsar police arrested him from the provincial capital.

Given the information, the LHC ordered that the plea was no longer admissible as the PTI leader's detention was not illegal.

Nothing will happen now.

However, PDM good at own goals - strengthening the vote bank for Imran Khan.

Hours after senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhry’s arrest, party chief Imran Khan not only condemned his arrest by calling it a “witch-hunt” against his party but also accused Interim Chief Minister Punjab Mohsin Naqvi of backing such actions against PTI, ARY News reported.

Addressing his party’s workers and supporters, the PTI chief said that Mohsin Naqvi is not there to conduct the upcoming elections as a neutral supervisor as he was the one who “backed the regime change operation against PTI”.

“Mohsin Naqvi just did what was expected of him after his appointment (as CM Punjab), he cherry-picked those police officers who tortured PTI workers (in the past),” said Imran Khan.

“Are such people going to conduct free and fair elections?,” questioned Imran Khan.

The PTI chief urged his party supporters to stop fearing “jails, trials and tribulations” and unite against the incumbent “imported government”, who he claimed is bent upon taking country towards “destruction” and “chaos”.

Imran Khan maintained that such “oppressive tactics” cannot force him to accept a government led by “crooks and thieves” and that he will fight such people “till his last breath”.

The PTI chief said that he has given 26 years of his politics in fight against such politicians “loot poor people of Pakistan” and “stash their wealth abroad” so that they can flee the country when needed.

He was of the view that such “leadership whose interests are abroad” cannot take the country towards progress but keeps the country and nation “enslaved” to their foreign masters.

The PTI chief said that his struggle is for justice and rule of law while the current government wants to bring in the “law of the jungle” in Pakistan.

PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry was presented before an Islamabad district and sessions court on Wednesday, hours after being arrested for “inciting violence against a constitutional institution”.

After hearing arguments, the court reserved the verdict on the Islamabad police’s request for the PTI leader’s eight-day physical remand.

We the people of Pakistan are to blame. Not once in this country has there been an Iran style violent uprising against the establishment and these politicians. It means people ultimately are happy with the status quo.

Such uprising happens once/if a leader demands it. Imran to his credit has called time and again for peaceful protests. Such calls are too dangerous for Pakistan because many will work with outside forces to seriously harm the country.

No revolution (or status quo change) has ever occurred without sacrifice. I think there may come a time where IK's patience may run out and his one call may mean the end for GHQ.

I just wish at the end of long march where the protestors were face to face with the Army, IK had not asked his supporters to back down and go home, instead asked them to continue towards GHQ. That would have broken the back of establishment. Obviously establishment would have used force and if casualties occur then the anger would rise and more people will come out to burn the greedy generals at the stake. IK chose the path of peaceful protest and the result is establishment is picking and choosing all his main players and inflicting torture on them.

Majority of the countries where revolution happens are homogeneous , Subcontinent has diversity you can easily pitch one against the other.

British fought against Sikh empire and after Anglo-Sikh wars the Sikhs literally joined them in 1857 to crush the Indian rebellion.

I think these leaders were all involved in the decision to keep it peaceful and also knew they could be murdered or killed. They are heros in my view to put their lives on the line but want to keep the public safe as possible.

It is frustating but PDM know their time is short. I wrote when they came into power their aim was to loot as much as a theif possibly can while ending corrupt charges , they are 90% there now. In less than 12 months, they will be all either in England or behind bars for good.

Fawad is a great man still smiling after being tortured(imo). One day Rana, Sharifs , Zardaris will suffer 100 x more even if not in this world...God willing.

Only solution is a violent uprising all over Pakistan. If the Army is forced to use force, then the soldiers will likely revolt against the senior millitary leadership

PK are not the type to sacrifice. We want others to do the sacrificing and hence the current situation. They want to be part of the system, not create a new system.

Pervez Elahi had warned IK that this would happen if he dissolved the assembly. IK needs to get out of this messiah complex where he lives in a world where everything he does is correct and that he can do no wrong. He also seriously needs to look at the useless people around him who have been giving him incompetent failed advice from the very beginning.

It is now perfectly clear that the establishment had set a trap for IK and PTI with the Punjab by elections win, Punjab assembly vote of confidence victory, he obliged them by dissolving the assembly, quitting the national assembly and now they have him exactly where they wanted him. If IK was under the misguided assumption that the people of Pakistan would come out on the streets for him, he will now get a brutal reality check.

Our Generals have betrayed us but nothing will happen. Its a business and there are billions at stake. They will not let go.

Pakistan it not like Iran or Sri Lanka, there are millions of guns available, it would be too bloody with too many people losing their lives. This would be playing into the criminals hands who will use police/security to murder people on mass, esp their opponents blaming it on uncontrolable violence.

Its best to hold back now and wait for elections, there is only one outcome.

Knowing our luck it won't end up like iran but end up with a country broken apart and like Somalia and Afghanistan

Plz be careful what you wish for .

I will eat my hat if there is anything resembling a fair election. PK has become everything our enemies claimed and what's worse is that these guys are not going to go voluntarily. We are in a deep bind with a govt and the elite having power but no support and IK having support but no power.

Of course it wont be fair but the support for PTI is so huge in Punjab and KPK, its impossible to rig a win for the corrupt. Karachi will of course be different. The recent victories prove this even though there was huge rigging.

Also in 6 months or so the world will be suffering serious economic issues, Pakistan will have or be on the brink of default. PDM will get the blame so will lose some of their little cretin supporters too.

It may be but as we saw with Sindh, the mafia own everyone that can impact the elections. The Generals know they have made a terrible error but they fear accountability from IK and blackmail from the mafia families as they have conspired with them. I don't see any good outcome

We wish for criminals to get lost and let the people decide.

Why don’t you wish for Pakistan to be split into 2 and IK’s party can have one share of it, and run that part the way they like with their own identity? Let the ‘criminals’ or people who follow an ideology that you do not follow have their half.

Are you real?

So DHA, Bilalawal House, Raiwand, interior Sindh will be part of the corrupt Pakistan and rest of Pakistan will be part of Imran Khans Pakistan :s

Seriously, you should think before you type. Its the minority suppressing the majority in Pakistan.

Yeah I don’t believe that’s accurate

But still I would advocate that it is time to give PTI its own country and let them run it without the inclusion or interference of establishments they will never accept

We have Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland as two separate nations with the same Irish identity. I think Pakistan is heading this way or it is the only reasonable solution

That is the end of PTI. I do not see PTI ever winning any provincial elections again. The PDM is here to stay and the next PM would be Bilawal. PML-N has said that they do not have any objections to Bilalwal becoming the PM.

Again, PTI’s worst mistake was to resign from NA and then dissolve the PAs.

You can not form a country for an army. The army is minute in size.

You can not form a country for an army. The army is minute in size.

So you will continue just live in disharmony and only live happily if you get your chosen government in play?

I’m sick of this man. Most of the noise and protest is coming from people who are living peacefully in the west in comfortable homes. All of you who are continuously trying to sustain pressure on the establishment have no real plans to give up your comfortable lives and live through the strains of Pakistan.

Even then, it is better that you get the Pakistan that you feel suits your way of life and thinking, and let the Bhuttos and Shareefs have theirs so that your Pakistan can prosper happily without the supposed hindrances caused by the previous regimes. If they are wrong, they will most certainly fail whilst you who are supposedly right will prosper

Son of corrupt bureaucrats should remember their auqaats first.

PTI supporters are disgruntled not because of the meddling by the Army but because the meddling is not in favour of PTI and Imran. All political engineering and meddling was welcome as long as it was benefitting Imran Khan. Then Insafians were bragging about how PTI and Army are on one page but all of a sudden now they are the spitting venom against the Army everywhere since IK has been ousted from power .

But that was a good thing. To have all branches of Govt working together to achieve good growth and c9mbatting c9vid etc. But you see you don't get the argument because you've probably spent all your life eating donkey meat.

What the PTI were saying was the army should stand with what is right and as far as we knew they were. Until we realised they weren't. You cannot argue that the current PDM is good..it isn't. They have proven to be a security risk and a complete disaster for the nation..but if you think they are good then nobody can help you. And whataboutery won't work in this case.

Also playing the copout card won't either. In Pakistan today you are either with the choars or those who want to help it and save it. Pick a side.

I believe Shahbaz Sharif created a world record of sorts, being the only leader and prime minister in history to hold office while having 0% approval rates in the polls. Even the PML N Stalwards like Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Ahsan Iqbal, Miftah Ismail are very disillusioned by the state of PML N right now.

Pakistan ideally needs another anti establishment, anti status quo leader apart from Imran Khan. Can't have just one leader only

Mamoon told us that he is the proper PM and neither have the faintest idea on how an economy works

PTI supporters are disgruntled not because of the meddling by the Army but because the meddling is not in favour of PTI and Imran. All political engineering and meddling was welcome as long as it was benefitting Imran Khan. And that is the funny part they used to call us as traitors for speaking against the army who gives lives on borders...

And now look at their post. They used to bash dawn as being anti state and being anti army.... Now they use their articles to defend a point.

Point is pti is happy as along as army favors them.. In their world no army involvent means rigged election...
