That's his problem. VVS Laxman averages 46, and he played some of the best innings of his time. Yet, he is an Indian great, not an ATG. KP averaged just a shade below 50 and he manhandled guys like McGrath and Warne, and demolished bowling attacks. Amla was an one dimensional accumulator. Big difference between him and KP.

Yes kp on another level. Higher tier than amla but you cant just say amla isn't a great man. At his peak he was brilliant. He was part of the reason why they won in Australia drew in India and beat England away.
