With the race to top-four getting more and more intense with every passing day, a ton from Rachin Ravindra has added more drama as fourth-placed New Zealand posted 401/6 in 50 overs vs Pakistan, who are sixth, in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Initially, Pakistan won the toss and opted to bowl. New Zealand showcased their boldness right from the start, promoting Ravindra to the opener slot, partnering Devon Conway. The pair began on a strong note in this 2023 World Cup fixture, and threatened Pakistan pacers.

But Conway (35) lost his wicket as Hasan Ali struck in the 11th over. The Kiwi batter under-edged Hasan to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan for a catch.

Getting their first breakthrough, it looked like Pakistan would gain gain control. But Ravindra responded in style, getting his half-century in the 20th over. It also turned out to be his third fifty in his debut World Cup.

The all-rounder built a strong partnership captain Kane Williamson. Ravindra got his ton in the 34th over, also becoming the first batter to get 3 tons in his debut World Cup. Meanwhile, Williamson lost his wicket for 95, in the 35th over, losing his wicket to Iftikhar Ahmed. On the other hand, Ravindra perished for 108, getting dismissed by Mohammad Wasim Jr.

After the departure of Williamson and Ravindra, Mitchell and Chapman followed the same template and piled up more pressure on Pakistan. Mitchell (29) lost his wicket to Haris Rauf in the 42nd over and Chapman (39) departed in the 45th over, falling to Wasim Jr. Glenn Phillips (42) took New Zealand a step closer to 400-plus, and departed in the 49th over, with his side at 388/6.

Mitchell Santner (26*) hit the six in the final over which took New Zealand past 400, as they set a 402-run target for Pakistan. For Pakistan, Wasim Jr ended the innings with three wickets.

New Zealand have four wins and three defeats, the latest being a massive 190-run loss against South Africa, which has put serious doubts over their capabilities.

On the other hand, Pakistan revived their campaign with a much-needed seven-wicket victory against already-eliminated Bangladesh. The result saw Pakistan take their points tally to six.

A defeat against New Zealand will put an end to Pakistan's semifinal hopes in India. Meanwhile, a win will see them maintain their chances of making it to the knockouts, but they will need to win their other match too and hope other results go in their favour.

Skipper Williamson has returned to the New Zealand side, replacing opener Will Young. Also, Ish Sodhi replaces Matt Henry, and Mark Chapman has been slotted in for James Neesham. Meanwhile, Pakistan have made only one change, with Hasan Ali replacing Usama Mir.

It will be interesting to see Pakistan captain Babar Azam's performance against New Zealand. His last five ODI scores against them are 49, 65, 54, 107 and 1, which makes him a threat. But his middle-over numbers aren't inspiring in this World Cup. He has been striking at only 79.24 in the 11-40th over period and we could see New Zealand using that to their advantage.

At the moment, 402 is the target for Pakistan to stay alive in the World Cup. It’s a tough task ahead.

So we have to get ready for a defeat or Pakistan is up for a huge chase?

I predict lot of crying as we first get to a good platform of 150 in 45 overs and then go for gold.

Qudrat ka nizam. Rain started hope it rains for 2 hours. And Pak gets to chase 200 in 20 overs 😛

Pakistan should pay fearlessly for once.. Anyhow pakistan is not winning this one by their usual approach of stat padding...

I don’t see Pakistan winning this.

For Pakistan to even get close 2 of the top 4 batsmen (Fakhar, Shafique, Babar, Rizwan) will have to play out of their skins, the other two will need to show up at the very least. Then of Chacha and Shakeel in the middle / late middle order, one has to deliver the big runs also.

The odds of ALL of that happening (and IMO ALL of it had to happen for Pakistan to reach 400) are minuscule.

I’d be surprised if they make 350.

The question is how do Pakistan chase with 3 anchors in the top 4?

Really think Fakhar and Iftikhar should open and re evaluate in 10 overs.

Pakistan can't win this even on their wildest dreams

Will New Zealand start with spin? They may want to get those 20 overs out of the way to ensure a match.

New Zealand spinners will struggle massively with a wet ball.

Babar is a genius.

Well to win you need to forget about your 50s which is hard for Babar and impossible for Riz.

They have the ability to play at 170 in 30 overs and ask remaining batsmen to score 240 runs in 20 overs.

Wese I remember the days when it used to rain during 14th August. Maybe Bengaluru's rain also signals our resurgence? Naaaaaah.

Babar may not have the intelligence to think at that level. This is like 4D chess for that poor guy.

Imagine if it is a washout now. Pakistan would get a lifeline.

I hope Pakistan doesn’t get a lifeline. It’s better to be decimated here and to learn some tough lessons instead of hiding the mistakes of this team under the rug.

No true fan will ever pray for rain to deny a deserving team a chance to chance to cement their semi final spot.

Pakistan can't win this game, but at least they should put up some fight.

guys, i had a dream that Pakistan won this game in the last over :))

I decided to have a nap in Pakistan innings for about 45 mins, as we were getting hammered around 20-30 over mark. In my dream I was celebrating as we were taking lots of wickets v New Zealand haha. I woke up to see, well yeah.

Did you also dream that Afghanistan lost both theirs, NZ lost to Sri Lanka, we ended up in semis once again, thrashed India in semis and ended up winning the World Cup in Ahmedabad?

The euphoria of that dream must have been unimaginable.

Failed country and failed cricket team
For once admit it we are not good enough and stop hyping the likes of rizwan and babar
Admit our mistakes instead of making it out everyone is against us do the home work and come back strong

I know it’s hard to look at the upsides right now, but NZ attack is weakened.

If there was ever a time for Babar to get anywhere close to Kohli as a batsman, it’s this game right here.

This World Cup has shown the difference between bilateral/JAMODI games and World Cup games.

I think his dream would have involved Afg making the semis :srt

Yeah last throw of the dice. Just need to go for it.

Would love Pakistan to fight till last bowl. For the first time in years, I sat thru an entire ODI innings, that too for a non-India match. Eng-Aus has been pretty dull so far. Pls don't ruin the Saturday.

My WhatsApp is going off this morning with thousands of messages from people hurling curses at Pakistan

Guys what’s happened? It’s a game of 2 halves!
You were hoping that Pak score 400 runs...well, they did one better...they conceded 400 runs!

Why would anyone want Pakistan to reach the semis and face India? There's only that much humiliation one can take!

Bro it’s not my fault Babar and I see cricket differently as Mike Atherton said on commentary during the Afghanistan match

NZ's batting was entertaining. Plenty of boundaries.

the element of fluke

You can never rule that out with Pakistan cricket

Are you having a laugh, Babar is the Chinese version of kohli he's never going to get as good

LOL Babar publicly stated he wanted 280 against Afghan on these pitches and grounds with his useless and mediocre bowling attack.

Target 170 in 20 overs
Then 340 in 40
And take it from there

I know the odds are low but I’m tired of Bob the Innings Builder getting slandered by every corner for only feasting on Nepal and Uganda attacks.

It’s time for his getback by helping ace this mammoth chase.

Fakhar - 100
Abdullah - 100
Babar - 100

3 big hundreds from the top 3 are needed.

i am trying to search up astrologer predictions on twitter after the mamoth 400 score.. Astrolgers predicted Pakistan ahaahahah, still keeping some hope man.

Are we still on for Nrr?

How many do we need to chase this in to get ahead of NZ?
