Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday tweeted a video 'exposing' "Indian police's pogrom against Muslims in UP". However, the video shared by the Pakistan PM is seven years old from Dhaka in Bangladesh and not India.
The gory video is being widely circulated these days and passed off as footage from the recent protests against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in India.
India Today's Fact Check team had recently busted the fake news claims over the video, in which 'RAB' was written on the uniforms of the policemen.
After a doing simple Google search, it can be easily found that RAB or Rapid Action Battalion is an anti-crime and anti-terrorism unit of the Bangladesh Police.
Soon after Imran Khan's tweet, UP Police clarified the claim pointing out the same. UP Police also referred to India Today's Fact Check article and the original video saying it would help Imran Khan "be better informed".
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">This is not from U.P, but from a May,2013 incident in Dhaka,Bangladesh.The RAB(Rapid Action Battalion) written on the vests at 0:21s, 1:27s or the Bengali spoken, or these links would help you be better informed.<br>1. <a href="https://t.co/Rp3kcKHz2K">https://t.co/Rp3kcKHz2K</a><br>2.<a href="https://t.co/zf7qk9bY7M">https://t.co/zf7qk9bY7M</a><a href="https://twitter.com/UPPViralCheck?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@UPPViralCheck</a> <a href="https://t.co/4krjmD38PK">https://t.co/4krjmD38PK</a></p>— UP POLICE (@Uppolice) <a href="https://twitter.com/Uppolice/status/1213113084748820481?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 3, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
It wasn't long after the Pakistan PM apparently realised his mistake and deleted the tweet.
The viral video is disturbing as it shows policemen brutally thrashing people, bodies lying in pools of blood and people running for safety.
According to reports, on May 6, 2013, Dhaka witnessed a clash between protesters and police over the blasphemy law. The protest was organised by the group Hefazat-e Islam, demanding an anti-blasphemy law with provision for the death penalty. Hence, it is clear that the video is from Dhaka and around seven years old.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Dhaka is UP, 2Bangladesh is India, 2013 is 020. Police brutality is pogrom. Just like Germany and Japan share borders and history has little mention of Jesus. Imran Khan’s twitter circus is no different from his spoken gaffes.
