New Zealand vs India | 2nd T20I | Auckland | Match Thread

India have won seven out of their last eight T20Is, and four on the trot. Another win would present them a great chance to win the series: something they couldn't achieve in their previous two attempts in New Zealand.

Overview

New Zealand vs India, 2nd T20I
Eden Park, Auckland
Sunday, 26 January; 07:50pm local, 06.50am GMT

Jasprit Bumrah, India's premier pacer, twisted his ankle in his final over in the first T20I on Friday and received on-field treatment immediately. However, he was able to bowl out the remaining four deliveries, which are positive signs for the visitors ahead of the second game.

New Zealand, on the other hand, might consider bringing in Daryl Mitchell or Scott Kuggeleijn in place of Tim Southee or Blair Tickner, both of whom were taken to the cleaners in Auckland. The hosts made changes to their batting order in the first game, pushing Ross Taylor to No.5 to lend stability to the lower order. The ploy worked, as he slammed an unbeaten 54 in just 27 balls.

Whether they persist with the same strategy would depend on the kind of start they get from their openers, who looked at their destructive best on Friday.

Remember the last time

India claimed the opening fixture of the five-match series with a six-wicket win, thanks to a solid batting performance. KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were all among the runs, as the visitors chased down the 204-run target with an over to spare. Iyer, in particular, was in excellent touch, slamming an unbeaten 58 in double quick time to take India home.

Given the success of batsmen on Friday, with as many as five fifties being scored combined, it'll be the bowlers who'll play a decisive role at a venue that has a reputation of producing high-scoring games. In the absence of the injured duo of Trent Boult and Lockie Ferguson, the spotlight will be on Tim Southee, who wasn't quite at his best in the first game, going wicketless in his four-over spell, while conceding 48 runs.

What they said

KL Rahul (India wicket-keeper): "As a batsman as well, after keeping for 20 overs, especially you get a fair idea on what are the good shots on this kind of wicket and so I'm enjoying the responsibility and so far so good for me."

Kane Williamson (New Zealand captain): "Taking pace off seemed to be working okay, but it was tough to execute because India put us under pressure constantly. But we need to find ways to pick up some wickets."

Conditions

The shorter boundaries and quick outfield at Eden Park make it batsman's paradise, but clever bowling has paid dividends for pacers at this wicket. The weather is expected to be clear and we might be in for another run-fest on Sunday.

New Zealand have won the toss and have opted to bat

Teams:
India (Playing XI): Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul(w), Virat Kohli(c), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Manish Pandey, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah

New Zealand (Playing XI): Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson(c), Colin de Grandhomme, Ross Taylor, Tim Seifert(w), Mitchell Santner, Blair Tickner, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Hamish Bennett

Kiwis would be looking for some wear and tear in second half , so that their two spinners can exploit that . But they will need at least 180 here to put some pressure on Indian batting.

MenInG please merge the match thread I made with this one.

Should have chased...

We have failed to defend 200+ scores twice here. Obviously with the smaller boundaries you're always in the game with wickets in hand.

Kiwis have to bowl with better plans here , try and hit right areas , and avoid giving room.

This is ridiculous this ground must be banned lol First slip can reach the boundary in ten steps

Munro is so garbage.

Fortunate not to be out early on in both games now.

Lucky India have worked him out and he doesn't score runs this series.

Don’t mind chasing here. With the ball , we really need more than Bumrah to fire today though.

I'm glad the first game has blinded people from Munro's mediocrity.

Let's hope selectors Rayudu him.

Has Guptill come back to form or it is the ground. Last few months he looked like he was past his best

He looked awfull in the Super Smash Final.

He's more hit and miss these days although during the WC he was woefully out of form.

How are the seats empty ? It’s a weekend as well.
Really expensive tickets and second game here.

Looks like Indian fans were the only ones who bought tickets.

Friend was telling me the tickets were $90 and we decided not to go. Not worth it.

That’s a shame.

90 dolla.damn that's expensive. why?

in australia it's only 40 bucks. maybe world cup ones might be 70 or something. that's about it.

Iyer reminds me of Azharuddin.

Captaincy material. A solid middle order consolidator who can change gears when required and a brilliant fielder as well.

Because NZC are greedy and want to cash in on this tour.

Could have sold out Eden Park for both games at 30-40.

I think he is a brilliant T20 player but I have always maintained that he is a hack and not suited for ODI cricket where I always find him throwing his wicket.

He's a hack whose game has been worked out by teams. Cramp him up and don't bowl in his two hitting zones and he does nothing but waste balls.

I miss Guptill and McCullum opening.

That use to be loads of fun.

Indian fans : it's a T20 match, nobody cares.

Kohli : takes a catch and is celebrating like he's won the WC.

He is ranked no.4 or o5 in the world lol Pooran is a way better batsman than him.

I remember I said the same back when Munro was hitting 40 balls 100s that he is not suited for one day cricket but honestly, I have seen him do well in T20s a lot of times. He has an excellent record in T20 I think.

Have you watched him in the IPL? He does the same there. So calm down. That is kohli being kohli.

Due to teams not knowing how to bowl to him. There's a reason why most want him out despite his good record. He's our Rayudu.

Why always when India touring any other country ,they always increase tickets prize even in ICC tournament Indian match tickets prize also increase.

What's the point of playing Thakur really??

We have Bumrah, Shami, Bhuvi and Saini. Thakur has already gone for plenty.

He's gone, now we have thakur to replace him. Let's see who screws up worse before being kicked out for good in this series.

Because they know Indians will buy tickets and are trying to cash in.

Problem is Kiwis don't think it's worth it, hence the disappointing attendance for both games.

So Thakur is getting free ride and picking up a wicket is cherry on top.

I still cannot believe Dubey is bowling reasonably economically. Almost the same pace as CD minus movement.

Rayudu is different from Munro. Munro is more of a hitter who throws his wickets after playing a couple of big hits.

Rayudu doesn't throw his wicket which is why he made it to Indian team. Both are massively mediocre though. Munro is good for T20 cricket.
