India (160/6) clinch last-ball 4-wicket victory over Pakistan (159/8) in the final over at the MCG

Saeed ajmal 2010 hussey scored 47 in last 3.

Things are common in T20 cricket.

In Asia cup india n pak both won with 1/2 balls spare.

Pakistan has issues taking more wickets after 4/5 initial
Ones
Asia cup 58/5 sri lanka scored 170
Semi final 95/5 scored 177

Today india 31/4 scored 160

4th pacer was missing n Shaheen was not fit at all.

Pakistan has to move on like wounded lion

Win next 4 matches & reach semi final.

That is it.

Even Australia lost to kiwiz by 1 wicket in 2015
Then came back hard on them in final

Or our own 2017 icc final.

What an unbelievable match!!! 28 needed off 8 and Virat has pulled off an unbelievable chase. This was iconic and will remembered for a long time.

Having said that Pakistan bottled it in the end. Nawaz literally was a bundle of nerves in that last over, has he just bowled normally, it is unlikely that India would have got 16 runs. It was still many to get, even with 13 needed off 3 it was Nawaz who looked under pressure.

Pakistan can consider going in with a 4 man pace attack Mohammad Wasim here instead of Haider Ali would have been very handy.

It was clutch Innings by Virat however umpires cost Pakistan the game.

Former skipper Virat Kohli hit an unbeaten 83 as India pulled off a miracle four-wicket victory over Pakistan in a final over thriller at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Melbourne.

Not for the first time - and unlikely to be the last - former skipper Virat Kohli turned back the clock with a brilliant individual knock of 82 from just 53 deliveries that saved the day for India.

Kohli came to the crease in the second over when KL Rahul (4) was undone by Naseem Shah (1/23) and things looked forlorn for India when a fired-up Haris Rauf (2/36) reduced them to 31/3 after the batting Powerplay.

But Kohli kept his nerve and, just like he has done so many times previously, expertly guided India home in front of a crowd in excess of 90,000 at the MCG in Melbourne.

Final over thriller has packed crowd on the edge of their seats

India never looked like winning it, but with Kohli and Hardik Pandya at the crease there was always an outside chance they could pull a rabbit out of the hat.

There was 31 needed from the last two overs and Kohli hit Rauf for two massive sixes on the final two deliveries of the penultimate over to make the equation 16 from the final six balls.

Still there was more drama.

Pandya fell on the first delivery of the final over, before Kohli put Mohammad Nawaz into the stands off a waist high full toss to make it six runs required from the final three deliveries to pull off the unlikely win.

Kohli was bowled on the ensuing delivery, but given it was a free hit India scrambled three byes to leave them in the box seat with just two needed from the final two balls.

Karthik was stumped on the second last delivery to give Pakistan hope, but Ravi Ashwin came to the crease to hit the winning run from the final ball of the match to clinch a thriller for India.

Lack of bowling options costly for Pakistan

The lack of a decent fourth seamer proved costly for Pakistan, with India targeting Nawaz during his spell while keeping their pacers at bay.

It was Shaheen Afridi that did the damage with the ball in Dubai last year, but this time around it was his fellow quicks as Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah broke through India's top-order.

Pakistan's pace trio bowled with sheer pace to reduce India to just 31/3 from their batting Powerplay and there was more carnage on the first ball of the seventh over when Axar Patel - promoted to No.5 in the batting line-up - was run out attempting a run that wasn't there.

But Kohli and Pandya timed their run perfectly to guide Rohit Sharma's side home in a thrilling encounter in Melbourne.

Star duo fail as Iftikhar Ahmed picks up the slack

While India had similar success during Pakistan's batting Powerplay, they weren't immediately able to build on their success of removing Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan cheaply.

Arshdeep Singh (3/32) got the key wickets of Babar for a golden duck and Rizwan for just four, only to watch Iftikhar (51 off 34 deliveries) and Shan Masood (52* from 42 balls) resurrect Pakistan's innings with some smart batting that was combined with some big hitting.

Iftikhar took a particular liking to the spin of Axar Patel as he launched the India all-rounder for three massive sixes and 21 from his only over to help Pakistan post a competitive total.

A more composed Masood brought up the third T20I half-century in the penultimate over of Pakistan's innings, with Afridi launching a couple of rare big hits late.

Where to now for Pakistan and India?

Pakistan have three days off before their next encounter and will look to bounce back to winning ways when they take on Zimbabwe in Perth on Thursday.

It won't be an easy task though, with David Houghton's side showing plenty of positives with both bat and ball when victorious in two First Round matches against Ireland and Scotland.

India’s next assignment is in Sydney on Thursday against the Netherlands.

India winning the game on the last ball has the group still wide open for a semi final spots based on NRR.

Devastated, hard to come back from this. Also we had to have a 4th pacer, Nawaz bowling the last over cost us the match.

Also greatest knock ever by King Kohli! He is back & how!

cant wiat for shaheen and naseem to show india what real bowling is..

Rohit sharma getting out again to an inswinger?

Don’t want to taunt now but these are the kind of statements make this victory sweeter. Shaheen obviously coming back from an injury was slower than Hardik Pandya lol.

Mohammad Rizwan is standing back to the spinner!
Not sure , whose call was that... why they asked Nawaz to bowl like a medium pacer....

Brainless and clueless as a team...

There is a reason why they dont bowl a spinner at the end.. Same Asia Cup mistake..

Anyways Rauf gave the momentum with 2 sixers in the final over and Shahen going for 17 in the previous over...

Very bizarre strategy. Someone who is not very much used to bowl seam up cannot experiment at that stage. That was a gamble by Babar using up all the seamers as much as possible. That ploy would have worked but for those 2 sixes.

In the end, the team displaying immense self belief and mental toughness one.

The Green Shirts just do not have that mental toughness to go all the way.

1992 World Cup was alone won after Imran instilled self belief in the team and there was no looking back.

Babar Azam simply does not naturally have it in him despite now having considerab captaincy experience by now.

If only we had Imad Wasim for the last over lol

Rohit Sharma: I was in the dressing room. I don't have any words left. You got to expect something like this in a game like this. We wanted to stay in the game for as long as possible. That crucial partnership was the game changing moment for us. The pitch had something in it. There was nice carry. Some swing and seam. Good to see from the bowling perspective. They had a good partnership (Iftikhar and Masood) after that. They batted well towards the end as well. But we knew we had to bat out of our skin to chase this. Those two guys (Kohli and Pandya) are experienced. Staying calm and taking the game deep was very critical. Good for our confidence. Always crucial to get off the mark like this. We were in no position to win this. The way we won that's more pleasing for us. Hats off to Virat for the way he batted, has to be the best innings he has played for India. I would like to thank everyone, it's wonderful to see. Their support for us is very, very crucial wherever we go.

Babar Azam: Our bowlers bowled really well. All credit to Kohli and Pandya. It wasn't easy with the new ball. We had partnerships after 10 overs. We had a chance. We tried to stick to our plans. But credit to Virat Kohli. In the middle we decided we wanted a wicket and held the spinner back. We had a lot of positives. The way Iftikhar played and the way Shan played.

Virat Kohli | Player of the Match: It's a surreal atmosphere, I have no words, no idea how that happened. I am really lost for words. Hardik believed we can do it, if we stayed till the end. When Shaheen bowled from the pavilion end, that's when we decided to take him down. Haris is their prime bowler, and I hit those two sixes. The calculation was simple. Nawaz had one over to bowl, so if I could take Haris down, they would panic. From 28 in 8, it came down to 16 to 6. I tried to stick to my instincts. The first one was back of a hand slower ball (the one over long-on). Standing here I just feel like it was meant to be. Till today Mohali was my best innings against Australia. Today I will count this one higher. Hardik kept pushing me. The crowd has been phenomenal. You guys (fans) kept backing me and I am grateful for your support.

It would have 3-0 this year in India's favour had Arshdeep not dropped that easy catch.

#FACT

It’s the umpires job to call a no ball, not the batsmen, both umpires messed up and the English 3rd umpire was strangely quiet

Great game of cricket. Both teams were desperate to win and I think at the end of the day Pakistan should be proud of the cricket they played today inspite of the loss. :inti

I am extremely disappointed becouse it was pakistan game to loose the score was enough to defend it.Shaheen and the Umpires cost Pakistan the game.

I felt Pakistan were the better team right through out the match. They just lost their marbles badly on a couple of occasions that costed them the game.

With Pandya in the crease spinners is a huge risk although he got out to seam up delivery. He can hit like 3 or 4 sixes casually.

I agree pandya could have hit anyone bowler for 3 sixes but nawaz did bottle it and so did the umpires however it was a brilliant game.

Yes agreed they should be proud and so should the umpires :)

Pakistan should have played Wasim jnr instead of Asif.Wasim would have scored more runs,is a good fielder and a pretty good bowler.

True. Look at the difference in our spin bowling and their spin bowling and Rauf is a better death over bowler than any of the bowlers in the tour for us.

I am also surprised a bit by the role that Mohammad Shami got today. He didn't bowled upfront and neither he bowled enough in death. So, not very clear about what his role is. Preferably he should open the bowling too. And death overs will be a problem for us all the way in this tournament.

Kohli is GOAT he averages 60+ against Pakistan.

Paper tigers.

Keep going on about how good Pakistan bowlers are but when it comes to a crunch, they bottle it.

Any decent bowling side can fancy themselves defending 48 off 3 or 28 off 8 against any batter in the world, let alone not - so - great - any - more Kohli.

Only Pakistan team would give this just above average Indian side any respect...!

Pakistan bowled second thier wasn't any swing at all.

Dk almost lost it when india need 2 runs of 2 balls .how pathetic he played that shots when he just need to played its woth straight bats to just take single or double .And also Rahul is mental midget .Those player are not for big stages but some random t20 matches . including pant in playing eleven is need of hour .

Completely true. I didn't expected this coming from VK. I thought he would at Max score a 35 ball 50 and play a match losing knock. But this was surreal from him. Pandya struggled vs pace and bouncers and no contribution from anyone else. Still he got the job done. :salute

Great game, disappointed with the result but well played Ind. In tight games you have to hold your nerve, Nawaz didn't. But these things happen

One tactical mistake was done by babar today. When nawaz was hit for sixes in his 3rd over, it was right to bring back pace again, but 17th over could have been given to ifti chacha to finish nawaz's quota. That would have left with 3 pace options for the last 3 overs. And as indians haven't faced ifti's bowling before, so it would also have been a surprise factor to them. Chances should have been taken.

Didn’t expect that. Rauf went for that big over who is normally so good at the death, changed the game. So much runs to defend. With good death bowlers. Bottled it. Nawaz went from hero in the tri series to losing the game giving 12 extras! Final over!

It’s not rocket science, if Rauf had yorked Kohli instead of giving him a free hit that would have killed the match off in the last 2 bowls of the penultimate over, he’s bowled at his Australian home ground enough times to realise that!

Why so India always beat Pak when it's tight in world cups? Why do they always get the decisions?

Couldn’t understand how ungrateful Indian fans were going after Kohli in the lean dry patch he had. There’s a phrase, ‘form is temporary and class is permanent’. never doubt such class.

An innings be remembered forever. He held his nerves so tremendously and looked like believed it all the way. And there’s the luck favours the brave. They did get lucky with the no-ball full-toss which he hit for 6+free hit, then ball hitting stumps and they run 3?

Great game of cricket.

Pakistans middle to lower order as usual hurt the side and cost us 20-30 runs short. You can't win against top sides with such poor predictable easy to plan against, set fields too hacks.

Has to be a massacre from India for Pakistan to lose this now :)

We are winning this:)
Kohli and Pandya have managed to come up with something extraordinary. hen went for the attack after 10 overs and have managed to script something historic. India win a thriller.

Great game IMO Pakistan played better cricket but lost after almost nailed it.
Kudos to great batting by kohli
Overall Pakistani fans should not be disappointed that much and being a league match, WC is still very much alive

Kohli is too good but no doubt we choked like I predicted. No point in reaching Semis as will be more heartache.

Need a new skipper.

Very good game! Pakistan bowled so well until the final few overs. No shame to lose to one of best batsmanship in WC. I wish both India and Pakistan good luck for their rest of the games.

This where India Pakistan games are won based on tactics.. sure Kohli played Great knock but we had some bad tactics.. pitch was all seam friendly.. you could tell by looking at grass. We should have played Muhammad Waseem instead of Asif Ali. He can hit couple of lusty blows and would have given those necessary couple of seem overs in second half .. Hardik Pandya's 30/3 as sixth option proved to be ultimate difference. And he should have been Man of the match. Axar did nt even bowl second over because rohit sharma did nt need to after he got bludgeoned by ifti. Same happened with nawaz and we were forces to use our main bowlers bit early leaving it for nawaz in the end.. really bad tactics by our Qudrat believer Management

Muhammad Waseem gave match winning performances in second last game against Bangladesh giving away only 3 runs in final over and then in final he conceded 6-7 runs in 19th.. only phudu management like ours can leave out match winners in favor of hack like asif ali.. a nothing player in the end

An absolutely amazing game of cricket...

It had absolutely everything and had kick started this World Cup.

Kohli is too good but no doubt we choked like I predicted. No point in reaching Semis as will be more heartache.

Need a new skipper.

Can't argue with this.

We've taken the wrong decision at crucial times across many games now..
Babar has to learn or let someone else take the helm

Great game. Pakistan unlucky but it was a choke as well. Even discounting the controversial no ball- 2 wides in the final over is not acceptable.

Atleast fir Pakistan- it's not a knockout game and they still go chances. I cant see them beating sa though. I feel the Asian teams are weak in t20 cricket at the moment.

I’m heartbroken. They bowled so well in the beginning and then the game just got so far away from them.

Great game of cricket. Both teams were desperate to win and I think at the end of the day Pakistan should be proud of the cricket they played today inspite of the loss. :inti
Pakistan has pretty much been knocked out of the World Cup, what should they be proud about exactly? :))

Why so India always beat Pak when it's tight in world cups? Why do they always get the decisions?

As a neutral in India vs Pakistan contests- its usually to do with Pakistanis bowlers not able to cope under pressure. Not just the current lot- even wasim/waqar/shoab/saqlain combo was all stars but always choked under pressure.

not nawaz's fault. the captain is an utter buffoon..

playing half injured bowlers, getting ur spinner to bowl the last over just because he did it against Bangladesh.

This guy is not gonna learn from his mistakes, simple as that. He will keep on doing this again and again, and we have to accept it.

Bowling the spinner was the right call. Any of Pakistans fast bowlers and the game would have finished in 4 balls instead of 6 imo.

Shaheen was a huge miss for Pakistan. Basically, Pakistan relied on 2 bowlers. 1) Naseem (with new ball 2) Haris (with new ball and old ball). India should have never choked like this by playing timid defensive cricket.

'I am really lost for words' - Virat Kohli after his match-winning knock against Pakistan

India looked in no position to win the match after they were reduced to 31/4 while chasing 161. But Kohli brought them back into the match with a brilliant stand of 113 with Hardik Pandya, who played a vital knock of 40 from 37 deliveries as well.

A win for India looked unlikely even towards the end of the match as they needed 48 to win from three overs. But Kohli pressed on the accelerator and played some magnificent shots, smashing the Pakistani bowlers all around the ground. Kohli ultimately remained unbeaten on 82 from 53 deliveries as India won the match off the final delivery of the innings, with Ravichandran Ashwin playing a lofted shot over mid off to score the winning runs.

Kohli was seen getting emotional after the match as his teammates rallied around him and lifted him up while he was leaving the field.

"It's a surreal atmosphere, I have no words, no idea how that happened. I am really lost for words," Kohli said during the post-match interview.

Kohli also went on to explain how they planned and constructed the chase in the final few overs of the match."Hardik believed we can do it, if we stayed till the end. When Shaheen bowled from the pavilion end, that's when we decided to take him down. Haris is their prime bowler, and I hit those two sixes.

"The calculation was simple. Nawaz had one over to bowl, so if I could take Haris down, they would panic. From 28 in 8, it came down to 16 to 6. I tried to stick to my instincts. The first one was back of a hand slower ball (the one over long-on)."

The 33-year-old even rated this knock as the best one of his T20 international career, even better than the one he played against Australia in Mohali.

"Standing here I just feel like it was meant to be. Till today Mohali was my best innings against Australia. Today I will count this one higher. Hardik kept pushing me. The crowd has been phenomenal. You guys (fans) kept backing me and I am grateful for your support."

Sure Nawaz’s extras cost us in the last over, but it was the culmination of pressure we inflicted on ourselves. To me the majority of the blame for this loss should be placed on the middle order, we lost out on potentially reaching 170-180. Shaheen was evidently lacking match sharpness, but IA I believe this team has enough to get past this group

In the end, the team displaying immense self belief and mental toughness one.

The Green Shirts just do not have that mental toughness to go all the way.

1992 World Cup was alone won after Imran instilled self belief in the team and there was no looking back.

Very unfair. We've beaten India in big tournaments and this team is mentally quite strong. It was just a tough day as we ran into kohli in supreme form.

Pak did nothing wrong.

Today the feeling of loss was greater than losing the semi final last year. This world cup is done for me.

"Undoubtedly Best Innings Of Your Life": Sachin Tendulkar On Virat Kohli's Knock vs Pak

Virat Kohli has rated his unbeaten knock of 82 runs off 53 deliveries against Pakistan on Sunday in the ICC T20 World Cup as his best and it has been concurred by arguably the greatest modern day batter ever - Sachin Tendulkar. The former India batting maestro took to Twitter after India's thrilling last ball win over Pakistan to congratulate Kohli.

"@imVkohli, it was undoubtedly the best innings of your life. It was a treat to watch you play, the six off the back foot in the 19th over against Rauf over long on was spectacular! Keep it going," Tendulkar wrote on Twitter.

Kohli said that this was "one of the best matches" of his life while speaking to the host broadcaster after the match and he also rated his knock to be a better one than his classic against Australia in Mohali during the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup.

India had lost to Pakistan in the last T20 World Cup in 2021 when Kohli was still the captain of the Indian cricket team. He has in the past played several match winning knocks against Pakistan.

It was in the 2012 Asia Cup that Kohli, in company of Tendulkar, produced a knock of 183 runs to seal a great win for India against Pakistan and he has produced several quality knocks against the arch rivals ever since.

Kohli took over the mantle of being India's premier batter after Tendulkar's retirement from international cricket.

Doesn't matter. It went for six and would have gone for a six even if it had not been called a no-ball.
You don't bowl full tosses to a batsman like Kohli when he is in such a mood. He won't spare you.

Bowling two wides in the last over was probably a bigger mistake by Nawaz.

But that caused a free hit and that free hit cost 5 runs.

A spinner should never bowl the last over. It baffles me why Pak often do what the opposition want. Surely Naseem. Rauf and Shaheen would have been much better options. Just because of this stupidity we deserved to lose the match.

What you on about? It's only one match we've completed then how is the comp over?

To concede more than 110 runs in last 10 despite your opponent being gone and out is purely pathetic
Pakistan have doing this for quite long now, even in last Asia cup Pakistan had SL tottering but they let the match slip away
Fending to trundlers today looked humiliating

Most of the teams must have set their mindsets that whatever the situation they are in against pakistan, they will give you the chances for comeback and even win from a nowhere situation. There are 2 t20 world cup semi finals that they lost against aussies in same situation and now today.

What wait? How are they pretty much knocked out?
South Africa look like the team to beat in this group, no way are they slipping up against us in Sydney.

We have to hope for either of India and South Africa to drop a game against one of the weaker sides.

It may not have gone to last over, even India knew Nawaz has one over left.
