England can draw on recent experience of extraordinary run chases in their bid to win the fourth Test against India, says all-rounder Chris Woakes.

Set 368 - an England record - the hosts reached 77-0 at the close on day four.

Ben Stokes pulled off an incredible chase against Australia in 2019, while Woakes himself starred in a stunning defeat of Pakistan last year.

"This team has done some special things over the past few years in all different formats," said Woakes.

"You can draw on those experiences, what we have done in the past and what we are capable of as a team."

Stokes' 135 not out gave England a famous one-wicket win over Australia at Headingley when they were chasing 359.

Woakes made an unbeaten 84 to lift England from 117-5 in their pursuit of 277 against Pakistan at Old Trafford.

Now the home side are looking to pull off what would be their highest successful chase in Tests and the ninth best of all-time.

"These are the times when you want to be a part of it," said Woakes.

"We've certainly got the belief we can get the win. A lot of hard work needs to be done.

"A lot of the time it's just believing that you have the ability, then going out and executing."

Woakes has returned to the England side after more than a year out because of injuries, being rested and time in isolation.

He has taken seven wickets in the match and made 50 in England's first innings.

England eventually dismissed India for 466 in their second innings on Sunday, before Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns made it to the end of the day unscathed.

The hosts can draw confidence from the placid nature of The Oval pitch, which appears to be getting better for batting.

"To bat out tonight and be none down at the close was quality batting," said Woakes. "We have a big day to hopefully force a fifth-day win.

"There's a long way to go. To chase down that score would be an incredible effort - we have to tick it off slowly.

"Tomorrow morning is going to be tricky again. We've got to keep reminding ourselves this pitch is good for batting and we can do it if we bat well all the way down."

35% Chance of Draw
30% Chance of England Win
25% Chance of Indian Win

I think it will be a close game in the end.

Pitch is flat and England bat deep.

India should try Rohit Sharma's spin as well. Ashwin is definitely missing! (Otherwise more odds for Indian win)

will it be a tie?

If England don't lose too many wickets in the first session they will definitely come hard at India in second session

Tbh after this horror show by England, it should be end of Moeen Ali’s test career. He can still add something in T20

Interesting, I would make India favourites. I think they will win by tea.

Before England batted last night then I would have agreed with you completely.

But the openers have completely seen off the new ball, and aside from a couple of spits off Jadeja, nothing is happening.

It’s a flat, “day two” subcontinent style pitch. Let’s face it, if our openers can make batting look comfortable then conditions must be easy. Add in another heavy roller this morning before play starts to this too.

It would take a psychological implosion from the England order, absolute bowling brilliance from India as a unit, or a combination of the two to create ten wickets out there today. This of course could happen — hence the 36%.

If England are to win, they need Root to make a big century here.

England can take inspiration from this match which was just an year ago.

Chasing 277 runs in 82 overs on Day 5.

Here, the target is 292 runs from 90 overs and all wickets in hand. The pitch is pretty flat too. Only difference is the bowling attack quality but India are missing Ashwin here and there is not much for pacers except with the new bowl.

Don't think it's gonna be a draw. Either team will win it. To be honest looking at the pitch I would have England as favourites. India will really need to toil hard.

England will rue picking Overton instead of Leach. They could be looking at a more manageable chase here if they had fielded a more varied and less one paced attack. With them already being on 77-0, even 300 would have been considerably different to 368.

I can see some posters hyping England chances in here but in all realistic scenarios England would not win this game. If England manages a draw today somehow that would be the best thing they can muster out from today.

All in all I expect mentally England to collapse handing India the win just after tea.

Yep. The England win is not a zero chance but it is an incredibly small probability. Draw would be a good result for England from here, then take the series into a final decider at Old Trafford. But India are well in this today.

Hamed, Roy,root,Blairstown,Malan, pope,Ali,woakes what else you want to win the game. It's disappointed if they go for draw.

The first hour will be really significant I think. If India take 2-3 wickets then it will set the tone for the day and the England batters will likely retreat into their shells and poke their way to losing. But if it looks dead out there again and the England openers keep batting comfortably, the match could just end up meandering into a score draw.

Last time around England failed to bat through 60 overs on last day on a pitch where Shami and Bumrah were batting for fun. This England team will fail to survive 90 overs here today. Most likely India would win this just after tea.

India is going to resort to the Bharat Arun inspired middle leg stump line with a packed leg side field to dry up the runs

If by tea England have majority of their wickets intact then they could possibly have a dart to try to win it.

Huge day for Kohli to justify non selection of Ashwin. If India botches this up., question will be asked off him.

How many years it's been, since any Indian bowler has got injured in the middle of a match?

Certainly the bowlers have come out with a clear plan to bowl straight.

Ravi Shastri, Bharat Arun & R Sridhar tested positive in the RT-PCR test for COVID-19.

Bumrah really bending his back. Kohli need to take care and bowl him in short spells. Top class bowling this on a dead pitch/.

Pitch is dying so quickly, final session would be interesting if we reach there. This is not pitch where bowlers can take regular wickets.

England can only draw if they bypass the first two sessions, if they go after a win then we might not have final session.

If India loses this game, three things should happen:

1. Drop Ajinkya Rahane and ask him to announce his retirement.
2. Bring back Ravi Ashwin and make him vice captain.
3. Sack Kohli from captaincy and give it to Rohit.

We need to get into a run containing strategy.

England game to loose..flat wicket and 8 batsman in lineup..should easily be chased

It would be an England record if they do.

I dunno, if they reach tea with three wickets down I might start to believe. Most of these guys aren’t really test class batters.

Okay Thakur is bowling...now wicket will fall. He is a man who can do no wrong

Solid fifty from Burns and a hundred opening partnership, before a beauty dismisses him. Can't complain about that in the fourth innings really.

What did I say? :)))

Don't recall...last time my prediction went wrong. Sometimes I wonder should I not be in Indian team?

Lovely medium pace from Thakur. Reminds me of the days of Munaf Patel and Praveen Kumar in full flow. It really was poetry in motion.

Aye decent performance.

Really need Hameed to go on to a century now though.

I find this statement extraordinary. India are in all likelihood going to win by tea. Get the slips up and catchers round the bat!

Ashwin would have taken care of Malan here on this pitch. His record against left handers is amazing. What a blunder by Kohli.

India need another 2 wickets in this session to possibly start causing panic in englands dressing room.

Where is the proof of that? We've managed to prise out a singular wicket in 40+ overs.

Will there be some overs extended if 90 overs are done before the closure time?

All depends on Root really. If we can uproot Root's wicket, India would win. But as long as Root plays....english fans would root for an England win.

#ItsAllAboutRoot

Final session will be interesting with six wickets in hand and 140 runs to win of 35 overs.

It's all very exciting I must admit.

I still think it's on for the draw at the moment.

Could change quickly though.

You want me to prove something that hasn’t happened yet? ;-)

For England to win this they would have to get their highest ever fourth innings score in history, against a good attack on a wicket starting to turn. It’s not very likely even if we had good batsmen which we don’t.

Siraj may have just dropped the game for india.

Will there be some overs extended if 90 overs are done before the closure time?

At somepoint in final session last hour will be called and a minimum of 15 overs will have to be bowled. lets see match situation at that point.

Ok we hear you. India would have won match and be sipping tea by tea time if ashwin played.

I won't be surprised if someone says that catch would have been taken if offered off ashwin bowling. test cricket is game of attrition and it's same for viewers.

What a poor miss from Siraj! Would've greatly inconvenienced this fragile English batting lineup had he pouched that catch!

Not only the drop but Siraj seems to have hurt himself too while he dropped that catch!

Wrong fielding position for him

Seems England are content to bat out for a draw and not going for the target.

Draw should be favourite at the moment.

Building a platform. If they are within sight by tea, and have wickets in hand, they will go into ODI mode.

But if that's the way we're going to get wickets, we ain't gonna bowl them out.

Malan looked all at sea against Jadeja, he wasn’t going to survive long anyway.
