What's new

India (191 & 466) beat England (290 & 210) by 157 runs at the Oval to take a 2-1 lead in the series

What I'd like to see from today (whichever the result) is the England batters putting a high price on their wicket. If they get scythed out by brilliant Indian bowling and fielding....fine. It is what it is. The expertly crafted dismissal for Burns was justified after a good knock. But amateurish run outs like that last one are simply not good enough. Malan played a poor innings throughout the morning.

Need excitement. I want English batsmen to go for the win. be aggressive (but not run-out) and show some spunk.
Attrition and all that is fine but if they need some tea to wake up, we can always send our Wagh-bakri chaha

This is setting up like Gabba 2021.

230 runs, two sessions.

The only problem is India had Pant and Gill who played brave and aggressive knocks in pressure situation. England need that from one of their batsman. They have guys who can do that but question is whether they are brave enough to go for it in the final session like Pant did or not?

Root wicket is crucial. If he stay at one hand england will win . Considering flat fitch ,wickets in hand 230 runs can be chasable in 2 session as england bat deeps.

Had Siraj caught Haseeb, this would've surely been our session.

Eng shouldn't be too unhappy here. Run out was stupid, but otherwise, 8 wickets left on a flat wicket. India has bowled really well given its flat wicket and they kept the run rate really low. Indians fielded well as well.

Interesting game. The whole series has been a good one.

cant see england chasing these runs down in 2 sessions.

Draw most likely, india need 3 or 4 wickets in 2nd session to try and force a win.

So which team will be happy going into lunch?

I would be fairly happy were I Root. Just two wickets lost in the morning session will be acceptable to him.

The thing to do is press on after lunch. If he stays in for the session, the score will tick along. Haseeb can play anchorman. Reassess at tea what is possible. They would need 100 runs in the session to stay in contention though, then the big sticks can swing away in the final session.

Draw or India win still most likely.

Although we are very lucky to have Root and he is an absolutely brilliant player, his presence in the side can be a bit of a double edged sword in these survival situations.

When you are in the fortunate or unfortunate situation to have the number one batsman in the world with the rest of the players being average to poor, then days like today largely hinge on the performance levels of said great player.

In essence here, then, if Root fires, then England will be able to draw the match easily, or even possibly win the match. Whereas if he gets out, then the psychological expectation on both sides is that England are then guaranteed to lose. This psychic effect then impacts upon the performance of both the batting side and the bowling side.

Its good for england that Malan is out so jadeja will have limited impact now. Hameed need to get a move on.

He just keep defendin full tosses and half vollys

All depends on Root really. If we can uproot Root's wicket, India would win. But as long as Root plays....english fans would root for an England win.

#ItsAllAboutRoot

lol yeah #ItsAllAboutRoot now.
beatRoot and itsallOval4Eng

Malan was making the pitch look like a minefield. Probably good for England that he was dismissed. He was single handedly taking an Eng win out of the equation.

The odds of drawing became much higher after 1st session. Nothing in pitch and 8 wickets in hands. Eng may even try to win, but for that, they need to start scoring. Otherwise simply bat sensibly to get a draw. Eng has to bat poorly here to lose this test.

Jadeja looks lethal against the left handers with those footholes slowly opening up and getting filthier.

Good/lucky for us then that most of our batters in this particular side are right handers. In fact, two of the four left handers are the two wickets which have already fallen: Burns and Malan. Only Moeen and Jimmy are still to come. And if it gets to the point where Jimmy comes in, then it is a moot point anyway because the game is already going to be lost lol.

Hameed, Root, Pope, Bairstow, Woakes, Overton, Robinson.

England need their right handers to play well and stay in, in order to reduce the risks being posed by Jadeja and to have a chance of drawing this match.

I think Bumrah will take Root's wicket to make it his 100th test wicket. This is coming from our brother, Rajdeep. :yk

Indian seamers getting quite some reverse swing, proving to be more skillful than Englands seamers

Not what I expected from the first ball there.

Jadeja full toss, Root reverse sweep, four.

Can feel a wicket coming from a Jadeja no ball here if he doesn’t stop bowling them.

Jadeja has bowled 4 no-balls in this innings alone, proving to be a poor series for him.

Set batsman dismissed, augurs well for our chances in this test.

England's 2 best batsmen on the crease. Next half an hour indicate where the match goes...

Excellent analysis from Atherton on “why” Hameed got dismissed then… not merely because Jadeja bowled him a good ball (which he did), but also due to Hameed’s intent to score a single.

The intent to score runs has continued since then, from both Root and Pope.

I think this is the correct approach from England. No point prodding their way to a big loss. Just play normally and try to score runs.

Brilliant bowling from Bumrah. All done for Pope.

Think this is effectively game over now.

What a great delivery that was from Bumraj, his 100th test wicket too.

Brilliant delivery from Bumrah. India ahead in the game. All on Root to save this test match. Bairstow and Moeen won't survive the second new bowl which will be available in an hour time.

You were close but he took the wicket of Pope. Getting out Root will require something more special.

England didn't have much of a chance to win this test once they scored just 54 runs in the first session, now they look totally up against it.

Yeah, let Root hang around a bit more. We would like this match to go a little more closer.

Brilliant from Bhumrah.

If Eng goes for runs then it will give more chance to India to pick up wickets, otherwise, it should be not too hard to see off 50 odd overs here.

It’s reversing. Lots of pressure now.

Great spell from the Indian bowlers.

Another great delivery from Bumrah, Bairstow looking all at sea.

Another great delivery from Bumrah, bowls Bairstow!

Absolutely brilliant! Shades of Waqar Younis at the Oval here. Far too good for Bairstow.

Bumrah has turned the game on its head and it is now just going to be a matter of time for England.

India :respect:

Safe to say, we've never had a fast bowler like Bumrah who can produce a yorker like this out of nowhere!

Just amazing, some really high quality bowling here..to think this is a flat wicket

Looks like Buttler will be recalled for the next test, Bairstow's batting form with or without the gloves remains woeful.

When ball started to reverse (dry 5th wicket and Jadeja hitting rough a few times) pacers were always going to come into play. Good control shown by Bumrah.

Told you India would talk it. Why does nobody believe me?

Root could end up NO at the wrong end here. Nobody else can cope.

This is not the banana swing that Waqar used to get. Just tailing in a little with the angle.

Bumrah putting even Root in all kinds of trouble.
