Defending champions of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, West Indies, are settling to the new leadership of Kieron Pollard, and the three-match series in India will present them with a tough challenge, starting 6 December in Hyderabad.

Overview

India v West Indies, 1st T20I
Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad
Thursday, 6 December; 07:00pm local, 01:30pm GMT

West Indies will have to play their best quality of cricket if they are to get off to a winning start against India, an opponent against whom they have lost each of their last six T20Is, including three matches hosted by them only four months ago.

Coming off a 2-1 loss to Afghanistan recently, the visitors won't be doing too well in the confidence department either. During that series, the Windies batsmen seemed to struggle against seamers and India have a wealth of fast bowling talent, both experienced and otherwise, who will look to probe this apparent weakness.

While Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are proven match-winners, Deepak Chahar and Shivam Dube have done remarkably well in their limited opportunities so far. And with severe competition for fast bowling spots in the Indian set up, less than a year out of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in Australia, expect them to be firing on all cylinders. If West Indies do deal with the quicks well, they will have to contend with the quality spin attack comprising of Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

The onus will be on the experienced West Indies batsmen to lead the way in countering a fine Indian attack. To that end, Pollard himself will be a crucial figure and as will Evin Lewis, both of whom have a good deal of IPL experience having routinely faced bowling of such calibre.

The visitors have a strong T20 bowling attack. Kesrick Williams is the wily seamer with nifty variations, while Keemo Paul and Sheldon Cottrell can make things happen with pace and bounce. The leg-spin of Hayden Walsh adds another dimension to the attack. It will be a good challenge for them they set out to try and contain the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.

Faced with the task of trying to avoid a clean sweep, West Indies were off to a disastrous start at Providence with Deepak Chahar producing a stunning opening spell to reduce them to 14/3. Kieron Pollard made a fine 45-ball 58 to lead West Indies' revival to 146/6. In reply, India lost Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul cheaply, but half-centuries from Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant saw India home with seven wickets and five balls to spare.

What they said

Shivam Dube, India all-rounder: "They have got a good T20 side but we have prepared very nicely. I think India is the best team in world cricket and we will win the series."

Conditions

The pitch in Hyderabad tends to be on the slower side, with reasonable amount of purchase for spinners. Fast bowlers who are equipped with a slower ball can do well too. Weather is expected to be cool and clear.

India Squad: Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Manish Pandey, Rishabh Pant, Shivam Dube, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Shami, Sanju Samson

West Indies Squad: Lendl Simmons, Evin Lewis, Brandon King, Shimron Hetmyer, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Jason Holder, Keemo Paul, Fabian Allen, Hayden Walsh, Sheldon Cottrell, Nicholas Pooran, Kesrick Williams, Khary Pierre, Sherfane Rutherford

KL Rahul did well in the decider T20I v Bangladesh, played well under pressure so he's first choice. Sanju Samson should be given a chance at least in the 3rd T20I if India manage to win the first two T20Is.

I don't think India realize what a bombshell they have in Washington Sundar. Yes this guy is a decent bowler but he's even more incredible with the bat. Technically correct and can cut loose when required. He doesn't get to bat because he's slotted in such a strong batting order. Pakistan or South Africa will take him as a #5 batsman.

Very true. I truly believe (and very much hope) he will be a India's player of the series in the coming WT20.

Lol he is just another bits and pieces cricketer

Do i miss something. Why is everyone bowling half trackers when their strength is full balls. Ridiculous pie balls.

Absolutely shockingly horrific high school stuff by Indian bowlers. half trckers down the leg side. atleast 10 balls like that.

WI 58/1 (5.1) CRR: 11.23
India opt to bowl

Sundar very uncharateristic today. No accuracy at all. One ball got it right. got the wicket.

Brandon King repaying his Captain's faith, despite the very poor afg series for him.

Three drops in a row lol I think hyderbad ground light sucks. It is in your eye line. So many drops.

Another fantastic display from India in the fielding department, better than jonty rhodes my @$$.

Nothing doing with low lights mate, they dropped the catches...SRH play all their home matches in this very ground, have u seen that many drops in a match.Today fielding is crap.

Lesson Learnt - do NOT invite the Windies for T20I before an IPL auction.

another misfield. This is borderline associate team level fielding. What is going on? Look so scratchy.

Deepak Chahar. Is he worse than Dinda and Vinay ?
My answer is "yes".

India's not a good T20i side. No wonder they're no.5 in the rankings.
Proper average this

They have a couple of bogey teams. NZ and WI although the last 5 matches were won by India. India will beat others more often than not.

My answer is "yes".

His first over he was moving the ball prodigously... But then mar-mar ke, the batsmen softened the ball, and Deepak became a Dinda.

This is the worst I've seen us field in a long time.

Don't think we're chasing this down. All depends on Rohit but looks like he's having a bad day.

Chahar had an off day. he did not hit his conventional line and length. Mostly short. He should have gotten atleast 2 wickets. Poor guy 3 catches dropped in 3 balls.

India will miss Hardik Pandya in Indian condition. He can pull this one off. Also Bumrah's control, pace is needed as well.

To think that Afg just beat them at t20 2-1 under a month ago...

It comes down to what type of pitches you play on. this is a flat wicket. Let us face it. Afghanistan has the best T20 spinners in the world. 3 of them.

Rohit out. They bowl much better than Indian bowlers. Full balls. When it is short they put effort.

People talk about Virat as a choker but Rohit is biggest choker i have ever seen.

India missed a few sixes against half trackers. This is where power hitting is so important.

You can't call this choking. You have to keep taking chance hoping it comes off.

Iam not talking about him on the basis of this match,Iam talking how he performs in Icc tournament atleast Virat performed well in Ct2013 finals and two worldt20 knockouts.

Cottrell is really good bowler.
He struggled Indian batsman earlier and now

WI 207/5 (20.0)
IND 78/1 (8.3) CRR: 9.18 REQ: 11.3
India need 130 runs in 69 balls

This Indian team lacks balance. They will need Pandya, bumrah magic to win matches. these guys are predictable batsmen.

Then tell them to go hard. Two seasons ago KL Rahul was smashing them to all parts in IPL, including that 14-ball fifty.

Virat Kohli's batting is very agricultural lol He is trying to mow down everything. Completely mistiming it.

Kohli not looking fluent at all. NO timing and trying to muscle the ball. Quite unlile him. Been a good bowling and fielding performance by windies so far
