MOUNT MAUNGANUI: A well-deserved break coming up, India captain Virat Kohli will be aiming to seal the five-match series when his team squares off against a confused New Zealand in the third ODI here Monday.

The Indian captain has been given a break as part of BCCI's workload management programme and he would ensure that he finishes his assignment Down Under on a high after the maiden Test and ODI victories in Australia.

An unassailable 3-0 lead would be a fitting revenge to India's abject 0-4 humiliation during the 2014 limited-overs series.

One of the primary focus of Monday's encounter could be inclusion of Indian cricket's latest enfant terrible Hardik Pandya, who is coming back from provisional suspension for his loose talk on a TV chat show.

Pandya's presence lends solidity and balance to the side, and the skipper has time and again admitted it.

The Baroda all-rounder's replacement Vijay Shankar is a decent cricketer but is yet to possess the X factor that Pandya has.

That Shankar was given only two overs in the second ODI is an example that he is still not ready to shoulder extra responsibility.

Pandya is a few clicks quicker than Shankar whose bowling in the three ODIs that he has played has not been penetrative.

Pandya can also bat at No. 6 if situation arises and his busy approach in batting can also get the scoreboard ticking in the middle overs as the skipper wants.

Otherwise, Indian team doesn't require much tinkering.
New Zealand, on the other hand, have looked clueless against India's wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who accounted for 12 of the 20 wickets in the last two ODIs.

Kuldeep has looked the most menacing as he claimed two four-wicket hauls in the first two ODIs, while Chahal returned with two wickets on both the matches.

Seamers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami also have done their job well, getting crucial breakthroughs for the team.

India's batting too has complemented the bowlers, looking rock solid in both the games with Shikhar Dhawan's return to form lending the team the much-needed support at the top.

After scoring an unbeaten 75 in the first ODI, he cracked a 67-ball 66 in the second game.
Vice-captain Rohit Sharma, who had flopped in the first ODI, too entertained the spectators here with a strokeful 87 en route his 14th century stand with opening partner Dhawan.

Skipper Kohli also looked in good nick in both the matches, while Ambati Rayudu seemed to have found his mojo back with a 49-ball 47 on Saturday.
An ageless Mahendra Singh Dhoni too continued his rampaging run with yet another unbeaten 33-ball 48 to take India across the 300-mark, while Kedar Jadhav has also grabbed the role of a finisher with both hands.

While the batting looked in place, there is a slight concern about the visitors' fifth bowler's slot where Pandya might fit in.

India are yet to finalise their middle-order ahead of the World Cup.
Once Kohli takes a break following the third ODI, Dinesh Karthik might get a place to boost the middle-order in the skipper's absence.

The team management might also think of handing an India debut to the very talented Shubman Gill.
For the Black Caps, captain Kane Williamson, who had top-scored in the first ODI, looked good during his short stay in the second ODI, while all-rounder Doug Bracewell tried to take the game down to the wire with a 46-ball 57 but none of the other batsmen could convert their starts.

"There're two games in a row now where we've not had control at any stage, but we need to take small steps,'' Williamson said.

"Some of the dismissals were a result of us going too hard maybe. If you have wickets in hand, you never know. But we didn't have wickets in hand. Those are the lessons that we need to take ahead."

Hope Rayudu plays this one and fails again
only way indian team will benifit from this meaningless odi
leaving shankar is harsh as he never got chance to bat - oldies and biryani batted most deliveries

There's gotta be someone better than Rayudu. He keeps the scoreboard hostage for far too long and is incapable of shifting to a higher gear when circumstances demand.

Hope King Ghidora fires today, no centuries in last 3 matches is quite unusual of him. Even our Godzilla Rohit hasn't really decimated any teams of late.

I am still concerned with

Rayudu
Dhoni +
Jadhav

But, I know they're not going nowhere.

Jadhav is a 6th bowling option and can attack from ball 1. He is a good player. Old Dhoni and Rayadu, not really.

NZ playing with two spinners and they win the toss too. They could not have asked for better outcome before actual start of the match. They should be able to make a match out of it.

Rayudu continues.. Team management has a lot of faith in him. Today we can check his prowess while chasing.

This one should be much closer game. This is 2nd game on same venue and Kiwis have brought back Santner, while MS isn't there. Still, Kiwis will need close to 300 at least.

Not so sure about Munro for the WC, he hasn't done much at all in this format to justify a spot.

Kane should open and they should bring another batsmen. Maybe Neesham or Nicols.

Munro is a real problem for them. 26 average in 48 ODIs is not an associate team standard.
And he'll likely be left out of the WC, even our commentators have turned on him and they're usually really supportive of players because they're close to the players in the team.

Both Colins will likely miss out.

Why are batting like pinch hitters . This is the risk of having a deep batting line up. Reckless batting up the order.

Bhuvi and Shami moves ever so slightly around the off stump. Trying to flay those balls is a risky option.

NZ need to move Kane and Ross up one place and copy India's batting template, not England's.

Aim to get to 170/2 after 30 overs. Don't have the batters to go attack, attack like England.

Ugh, Guptill really nicked off to a straight ball.

Really poor show from the batsmen this series.

They have to buckle down and build a partnership here. Any attempt to play wild shots will trigger a massive middle order collapse.

Indian fans prefer facing a big target than winning this game.. I think That's fair..you don't want your chasing game to be undercooked come the world cup

Marked improvement already with third seamer option for India. He is way better than the trundler Vijay shankar

England is the only team which can face the Indian bowling comfortably in ODIs. Each of India's top LOI bowlers (Bumrah, Shami, Chahal, Kuldeep) would be the best/2nd best bowler for every other team.

Oligochaetes: "@Scott Lloyd: Latham could see off the new ball threat and then tackle the spinners as well. What you need is an opener who wont get out early and is an added threat while the spinners are on."

Wow.. my comment was posted on espncricinfo :murali

I can only imagine how strong India would be if they had a decent middle order. I haven't seen such a scary ODI bowling lineup since 2000s.

Biggest conundrum would be whether to settle for slightly less par score or go aggressively and end up getting bowled out for far less total. NZ needs one batsman who can rotate the strike now.

New Zealand absolutely struggling now and with Pandya in the bowling line up, they have no respite.

Ian smith is at his wit's end to explain this lol He was super confident after first match that NZ will never see a drop in performance again.

Hardik has been excellent. Hopefully all this **** show can be the making of him.

Even apart from the catch, he had a lot to do with KW wicket. Very tight bowling.

You do know that all of India's first choice LOI pace bowlers were not playing in recent ODI series against England?

it is a pleasure to watch this Indian bowling in rhythm. The flight from the wrist spinners :yahoo

NZ commies are really clutching at straws now, a 2 week break is the reason nz are losing, seriously, do they think everyone was born yesterday.

Phew. You picked two matches wher ethey bowled 2 teams out one due to scoreboard pressure. One known weak team against pace. This team has been doing across several countries, in various places for some time. The attack you posted is nowhere near a scary line up.

Root and Morgan will be the biggest problems get them, the leggies will run through everyone else.
