India 39/1 at end of Day 4 as they chase 420 to win the 1st Test against England

Eng can bat one session and make 150 odd runs. India will have to bat extremely well to save the test. Pitch will take more turn and Indian batting while defending well be tested.

Super comfortable position for Eng here. Time can be the only issue and if that happens then they will have no one else to blame but themselves for wasting time in the first inning.

bat 1.5 sessions if they can. Give about 10 15 overs to India today

Looks India did not score 900 that everyone was expecting.

England have no bite in their attack, it is a dead pitch, look what happened in 2016 etc. etc.

Too many dumb predictions.

I agree.

We fans went a bit too overboard with boasting after the AUS win. I was one of those fans predicting a mammoth Indian first innings total. I was wrong.

Jimmy gets his average below 23 for this match by getting the tail enders
Bowled well to sundar though.

England need to score 200 runs very quickly

What a legend Jimmy is!

Averages 23 in India in this series.

Eng should play for a win here even if it means giving India a chance to pull a win. Being too afraid will allow India to get a draw.

I agree. So it may be like 400 required in 105 overs..I think you are saying like 360 in 120 overs...

A lot of posters on this forum had predicted snake pit turners and India will 'doctor' the pitches and abc, xyz...a lot of these is hokum pipe smoke....two teams have batted and scored 800 in one innings.......so definitely not a Bunsen raging turner...so much for the saazish gang that bags every indian victory home...

Give India 100 overs and ask them to score 375 runs. Burns and Sibley opening, no Stokes or Buttler.

Many people said the same about Gabba and Indians actually chased that down. I think England would be wary of that and the way Indians were attacking and scoring runs.

Nadeem is a very poor tailender. Would have preferred Shardul or Siraj instead.
Kohli and his poor team selections continue.

Rohit+Kohli+Rahane combined for 20 runs in 1st innings. Very poor effort. Our lower middle order and all rounders saved us from humiliation again.

Indians learned the hard way in Pune about the double-edged sword that a bunsen burner is.

Nadeem is in for Aksar as a left arm bowler.

England would ideally want us to chase at least 450.

While I am not a fan of gloating..... Hardly these are bad predictions when wickets get thrown away willy nilly.

This is a dead pitch until now.

Runs are super easy here.

England being underestimated is a bad prediction tho.

Poms should have enforced the follow on here , poor , defensive decision.
I think their bowlers are already tired and might not wanna risk Indians making merry against tired bowlers and putting them to bat last on a fifth day Indian pitch.

Eng is so far ahead and the pitch is turning. Eng just needs to play sensibly and put some quick runs. Eng got super lucky to bat first here and they need to make it count.

It's time our main batsman feel some shame and score runs.

Everytime newbies and Pujara can't bail you out.

Not playing kuldeep ? Kohli & his selections, just saw Nadeem looks one-dimensional (will be happy to be proven otherwise)

New ball will turn and mainly bounce .

Will old ball turn is the question.

This pitch might turn into a minefield but I am told chennai pitch doesn't break like that.

Yes, Indians chased it down and that's fine. If the opposition plays exceptionally well to chase a stiff target on the 5th day then you give credit and move on, but you don't simply make it impossible for yourself to win by being scared to lose.

Ravichandran Ashwin is India's greatest test cricketer of this generation in my opinion. An absolute legend of the game. His impact in test cricket is absolutely phenomenal.

It is up there with the likes of Tendulkar, Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Kohli.

Loving the gloating by our guys on the field despite being 240 behind.

England looking shell shocked. This series is gonna get progressively worse for England. :rabada2

England won't declare before taking a lead of 450, that's too dangerous.

If it turns into a minefield then India will have very little chance. If only the new ball turns like this then Eng may think twice before declaring quickly and that may allow India to get a draw here. Interesting situation, but based on how Eng played in the first inning and batting order here, I don't think they want to be aggressive. Not sure why to be afraid after being 240 ahead.

Indian chasing in Gaba was exceptional, but it was exceptional because it does not happen every day. Eng shouldn't be afraid here.

The problem is they came close in sydney too with much better bowlers and also better pitches than this one.

I am with You. But question is are England brave enough to take that challenge? From what I observed, their test team is lil bit conservative in approach compared to their LOI teams.

Great captaincy by Kohli to start with Ashwin, but i guess no one will notice that.

With all due respects bhai...

This has been the standard operating procedure for india for a long time now at home.

If we are behind, ashwin opens the bowling.

Case in point, and pune 2017.

This wud not be a special move even if Rahane did it.

I think chasing down that big target in Gabba has given them a confidence to go for bigger targets even on a fifth day.

India will surely give a chase if it is possible, but that will allow to pick up wickets as well. If there is no chance for India, Pitch is not bad enough and India can dead bat to draw. Eng should dangle the carrot.

They look a bit negative. Batted too slow in the first inning and now kept the same batting order. Still, Eng is in the dominant position here.

All the talk about how they lost last time after scoring 500 runs seems to gotten in their head. Those things can happen but other team has to very exceptionally well.

IND 337
ENG 578 & 1/1 (2) CRR: 0.5
Day 4: Lunch Break - England lead by 242 runs

==

India batting can easily turn this around.

The level of arrogance by Indian fans is staggering. Cricket is a great leveler, and this degree of arrogance is beyond what we have seen from India previously even in home series.

The historic, phenomenal win in Australia has made them unnecessarily arrogant. No doubt this is the GOAT Asian Test team, but that does not mean they cannot be beaten, even at home.

England is also a top team, led by a very good captain.

First we kept hearing about how India will score a mountain of runs in the first innings because of England can so can we, we are much better etc., and now we are hearing about how they will chase anything England puts in front of them because they did at the Gabba.

We are seeing very little appreciation for England and they way they have played so far. All the focus is on what India will do.

It won’t hurt anyone to admit that England have completely outclassed India in all departments and thoroughly deserve to win this Test.

It is not just about the pitch on the first two days or the way India bowled or the team selection - they have simply played much better cricket and have shown that they are a very strong side.

You must be kidding, right? Game is 90-10 tilted in favor of Eng, it would take a massive effort to even draw this test and you are talking about turning it around!! I would be absolutely ecstatic if we win but it doesn't really seem very possible looking at the scoreboard.

England should be bowling in next 30 or 35 overs one would think. They should be able to add 150 to 160 runs and that should be enough

Where does he say india will win. Read properly.

Actually, I said before the series started that ENG could win the series as Indians are too much on a high from the Aus series win...

I want Lawrence to succeed as much as I want Sibley to fail.

It's all about the differing looks on their faces :rabada2

get england out for 72 man , its been a long time since i saw england got out on that score.

I think not many Indians are bosting about chasing the target. Most of the discussion is about what would England set for India keeping in mind our recent chases

Why is Ashwin using this action?

Once In a while it's ok.

Very unlikeable when using this action...

Has to go back to his normal action.

But he won't. Lol.

Either he is hiding some injuries or is operating under a false notion as usual.

Tricky session this for England, as they have to find a balance between a good target (probably around 380) and leave themselves enough overs to bowl India out (arguably 120 plus). They'll have to go at 5 an over here ideally, while being mindful of a collapse. Fascinating either way.

Lawrence and Sibley playing it smart. Working singles rather than trying to hit out to drown the sound. The volume around them from the Indians has already reduced.

Good idea to soak this in now as the series is gonna be all about long hard days in the sun from hereon :rabada2

Who the hell is this Nadeem aka I only bowl NO BALLS >>? and why the hell is he playing over Kuldeep ????

There was no point in it staying as a dead pitch and scoring 250 in 30 overs. Would much prefer this to start spitting cobras and England to get out for 160. India would still be chasing 400 to win but now with something in the pitch for the bowlers, and it would actually be a tense exciting match instead of a bore draw.

There is no doubt England have played brilliant cricket in last 3 days.

I think, Joe Root missed a trick there by batting all the way to the 3rd day....

England do not deserve to win the match until they win the match.
They have outclassed us in first two innings, but two innings are still left.
They are a strong side, that's for sure especially with Joe Root in peak form

If half a test match in India has made me you change your tune from a pure interest in tough, attritional cricket to being contemptuous of draws...

You're welcome :afridi1
