India, England set to go again as race for WTC final place intensifies
Ind v Eng, 2nd Test, preview

The race for a place in the ICC World Test Championship final is set to get ever more intense as India and England clash again in the second of their four-match series in Chennai starting 13 February.

Overview

India v England, 2nd Test
MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
13-17 February; 9.30am local time, 4am GMT

England took a step towards that end when they beat India in the first Test, at the same venue, by 227 runs in a dominant performance against the hosts. It was a result that took them to the top of the World Test Championship standings, while India dropped to fourth spot.

However, the task that awaits both teams in the remainder of the series is the same. Both teams will need to win two of the remaining three matches to progress. While England can still afford a loss – even a 3-1 series victory will take them to the final – India cannot afford to lose another match.

The intensity will only increase as the series progress. The question for England is whether they can keep up their performance levels of the first Test with a tweaked squad. Their XI in the second Test is expected to have as many as four changes in it, with Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Jimmy Anderson and Dom Bess all expected to miss out due to various reasons.

While Archer sustained an elbow injury that ruled out him out the second Test, Anderson and Bess were missing from the XII announced by captain Joe Root on the eve of the match. Moeen Ali is set to take the place of Bess – he took a fine first-innings 4/76 in opener – while Anderson will be replaced by another veteran Stuart Broad. Ben Foakes is set to take the place left vacant behind the stumps by Buttler, who flew back home after the first Test.

It’s still a supremely strong line-up, and India will have their task cut out against a side that has won six matches on the trot. The hosts will hope to display all-round improvement in the second Test – a must-not-lose match if there ever was one – and Virat Kohli, their captain, laid the onus on that at the feet of the batsmen after the last Test.

India will hope their middle order fires. With Axar Patel declared fit ahead of the second Test, they may yet look to bring in the all-rounder to shore up the batting, although it remains to be seen what combination he will play in, and whether Kuldeep Yadav, the left-arm wrist-spinner, will be able to add to his Test tally – he last played a Test over two years ago.

It should be a thriller.

Remember the last time

It was a Test in which England never seemed out of control. Root led from the front, scoring a double century in his 100th Test to lay the platform for the visitors. India’s response was mild in comparison – despite a thrilling counter-attacking 91 from Rishabh Pant – as they posted 337.

England decided not to enforce a follow-on, and despite being bowled out for 178 – R Ashwin took 6/61 – India were still set a target of 420 to win. India had a few hopes of batting out the final day, but early wickets led to a slide and they were bowled out for 192, and a loss by 227 runs.

What they said

Ajinkya Rahane, India vice-captain: "The pitch looks completely different, I am sure it will turn from day one. We will have to wait and see how it behaves in the first session and take it from there.”

Joe Root, England captain: “For us to win out here, it's going to have to be a real squad effort. Guys are going to have to come in and rotate.”

Bumrah has been rested according to Kohli to manage workload.

Interesting choices of personnel for India. Still sceptical about Kuldeep and Axar. Siraj is a good choice.

A fairly ‘transparent’ attempt by Kohli at the toss.

Should be a fun first session and see if Stone is worth his salt. ENG may need to bowl Stokes more than 15 overs here depending upon how things turn out.

A real poor decision to play Axar Patel. Indian tail looks hopeless now.

Axar, Ashwin, Kuldeep, Siraj and Bumrah will be lucky to score 20 runs between them.

Kohli continues with his pathetic selections. Siraj on this pitch will be useless. India should have played Hardik to strengthen the batting while also keeping Sundar. Without Sundar india would have folder for under 250 in the first innings in the first test.

India better hope our top order clicks and one of them scores a daddy hundred. Our tail is not going to rescue this time.

This series should have all sorts of asterix associated with it. Thats a severely weakened English line up. As good a chance to win a game this series.

Never in a million would I watch test cricket if you asked me 10 years ago. Now I look forward to all the games I can watch. I guess it's a acquired taste.

Last 11 matches between these two sides, England had won 10 tosses. Our luck has changed, finally .

Lol, we are missing so many of our own players in this test.

Gill gone. Pathetic start for India. I don’t expect much from Rahane and Rohit. So basically it is Kohli and Pant to score bulk of the runs.

India deserves humiliation for this selection.

Poor judgement from Gill. Least he could have done was to at least attempt to play stroke on that ball.

What a drive from Rohit previous over :broad

lol Kohli looked pumped there watching it.

As I said in the previous match, be afraid. Be very :afridi

2 more wickets and India will be starting down the barrel in their first innings. They better hope one of these 2 go on to make a big hundred.
The thought of Axar coming after pant is giving me cringes.

Interesting team selection by England to say the least

Calm down may be have some water if that helps a bit.

Bumrah has been rested according to Kohli to manage workload.

Which 27 year old needs workload management after one test? It’s either form or fitness

Olly Stone looks super impressive on first look. Looks skiddy, can crank it upto 90 miles/hour also can move it both ways.

1st test for Kuldeep in over 2 years. Poor from team management.

England needs to get its spinners in quickly. Pitch is already disintegrating.

A poor decision from Kohli, isn't the first time and won't be the last.

Kohli needs to quit captaincy. But there is no one at the moment who can take over the mantle. Perhaps Ashwin. I don’t think Rahane deserves a spot in the team let alone captaincy. He is as inconsistent as it gets and he is a proven choker.

What workload? He didn't even play full series against Australia and had played just 1 test against England lol. It seems he wants to stay fresh and fit for upcoming IPL. :inti

Exactly this. Just wait and watch how he is going to play each and every match of IPL but will start taking rest in Internationals. :inti

Why did England rest Anderson? He’s the single biggest reason they won the previous match?

Ashwin should become captain but we are talking about things which will happen only in a fair world. :inti

Yeah Anderson dismissing Gill, Rahane in quick succession and later Pant broke the resistance of the Indian team.

I feel Anderson being dropped alone has guaranteed an Indian victory here. Not much to watch out for.

This looks like a rank turner....very dry and already clear footmarks on pitch after just 6 overs.

India should win easily

Good from rohit, he knows can't survive in these conditions long, score as quickly as possible before getting out.

Yeah sure. That's the only reason :))

I have to plenty to watch. Thanks.

Run England Run and look out for some Pakistani posters trying to outrace you.

In asia jaddu is most important player for India. Ash- Jaddu combination is best in the world, so this series india clearly missing him

I don’t get it, I’m praising India and you’re taking that too as an insult? I predicted 4-0 to India before this series started, Anderson came and changed that with his surgical strikes in the first Test.

With Anderson out of the picture I have no reason to believe there will be any outcome to this Test other than an Indian victory.

India wouldn't have minded having the pitch from the 1st test here, wouldn't be as easy to put up a big score here.

Ball turning and biting adtet 10 overs is exactly why I wanted Hardik in place of Siraj. India needed to strengthen its batting and you do not need a pacer who bowls only 7 overs a day. Hardik can do that job.

Also with ball turning quickly, Washington would have been a better choice over Axar. Axar Patel does not turn the ball. He just darts them in. Sundar improves batting strength too.

Rohit is just itching to come down the wicket. Watch him lose his wicket in the process.

Eng needs to get rid of Rohit quickly, otherwise, he will simply add too many runs in just another 20 overs.

Jeetan Patel is England's spin bowling coach? With the resources ECB have they could have gotten anyone, what's so special about Jeetan?
