The Indian government has requested Pakistan to allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aircraft to fly over Pakistani airspace on June 13.

According to reports, Pakistan has received a formal request sent by the Indian High Commission in this regard. Modi is scheduled to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan next week.

Pakistani airspace on its eastern border with India will remain closed until June 14, a civil aviation official had said on May 29, the latest extension months after a standoff between the arch rivals.

Pakistan closed its airspace in February after suicide attack on Indian troops in Pulwama district in Indian Occupied Kashmir led to aerial bombing missions on each other’s soil and a fighter dogfight over Kashmir.

Foreign carriers using Indian airspace have been forced to take costly detours because they cannot fly over Pakistan. The closure mainly affects flights from Europe to Southeast Asia.

“The closure will continue until June 14,” a spokesperson for Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority told Reuters, without giving further details.

Pakistan lies in the middle of a vital aviation corridor and the airspace restrictions impact hundreds of commercial and cargo flights each day, adding flight time for passengers and fuel costs for airlines.

I would reject it. If something happens it will create chaos.

No way we must never allow that. We must punish India indefinitely. I don't even know why we are opening it on June 14.

No need to open it to open it to accomodate Modi. We should never open Pakistani airspace for Indian planes.

Need to crack the Indian akar; the comments in the Times of India article are disgusting. Pakistan is a sovereign country and can do what it wants.

India is hemorrhaging massive amounts of money due to us closing the airspace. We must keep it closed permanently causing never ending damage to them. By all means open it for other airlines. This government would have attacked previous one if they had opened it for India. It want to see India suffer massive losses..

Pak should say no, but this con artist will take credit and say he scared Pakistan into opening airspace for him.

What a sad state between the two neighboring countries.

We should say No. We should move on from India. No contact and improve our country

Open it for Modi once, but keep it close for rest of the Indian air traffic.
Use it to bring Modi government back to the negotiation table.
And please stop supporting the Jihadists in Kashmir or any where in the world.

What does close air space means?

Does it mean if indian aircraft comes in Pakistan airspace, Pakistan could shot down the plane without any liabilities?

I don’t know about the liabilities bit but I imagine that if a passenger aircraft does enter Pakistani airspace their fighter jets would force the aircraft to turn back or to land. They would communicate directly with the pilot who has a duty of care to his passengers therefore would obey any instructions from the Pakistani side.

Pakistan wouldn’t shoot it down, it’s not in their interests to do so.

If this news is true, then why are we so shameless?

We didn't give visa for Pakistani sportsmen for a world event (and ended up hurting ourselves) and then go around asking for opening of airspace for Modi?

I am cringing so hard right now.

Please reject Pakistan.

Please have some self respect and do not allow it. He won the election by fooling millions using the word 'Pakistan'. :inti

Exactly. If Pakistan has any self respect they will reject it.

I think they should allow it once, and just only this once, as a gesture of good will and humility.

Problem is if the shoe was on the other foot, I seriously doubt the Indians would allow any such requests of flying over their airspace. It would be rejected out of hand.

I would allow as a gesture of goodwill but it's always us that are making these gestures of goodwill but if any claims are made that we scared into doing it, then I would shut it permanently.

Cannot understand why Modi cannot get to Kyrgyzstan by flying eastwards over China.

Don't the Idiots in the MEA have a map of the world in front of them?

India gave permission for Shah Mehmood Qureshi to fly over their airspace to visit Male and Colombo in May and Pakistan allowed Sushma Swaraj to fly directly through Pakistani airspace to attend the SCO meet in Bishkek as well.

India has also recently released a few Pakistani prisoners. It would be stupid to deny this request.

I thought the airspace had opened months ago. Why is it still closed - is this punitive in response to Balakot or is there some technical reason?

Shah Mehmood Qureshi was given permission to fly over India to reach Colombo. So this is a two way traffic.

Ideally Modi shouldnot have done this.

Could be that with IK's conciliatory language and refusal to escalate the war of words with India, they are also looking for a way to climb down. Modi has his term for another 5 years now, no need to dupe the Indian public any longer about Pakistan's evil designs. Both countries would benefit from scaling the war talk down.

Pakistan should always rise above the pettiness, gloating of materialistic objects, hate, and ignorance of radicalized extremists hindu nationalists government of India and their supporters, Pakistan should have no objection, and Pakistan will not.

Similar feelings!

Why do politician deserve to travel, when average joe flyer has to go all the way, Modi shouldn’t be allowed either.

Only condition, there is only one parachute and the pilot has to be Abhinandan :57:

Or when his jet enters our airspace it should be escorted by the JF-17s that are bearing the markings of the MIG and SU kills. That will be a proper salt in the wounds.

Sorry mate. The same guy who used Pakistan as a means to gain a stronger vote bank. Who forced IAF to violate Pak airspace which resulted in the death of a few Indian jawaans the very next day. He cannot be serious in requesting to use the same airspace for his safe passage.

The guy needs to be shown the door

Na not always.

No its not that drastic, first the plane is communicated through radio that they do not have permission to enter airspace. If it turns back and leaves then well and good, if no response then PAF jets are scrambled to escort it out or land it on airbase, if plane turns hostile then it is shot down. Shooting down is not the first course of action.

your most welcome ...

Imran Khan has written to Modi multiple times asking for talks. What is that?

Come on man surely you know deep down that the BJP's policy on Pakistan is full of mixed messages and double standards.

Post Pulwama the Government of India stated that India would take "all possible diplomatic steps" to cut Pakistan off from the international community. Fair enough - if that's their stance I have no issues with it.

But why then put in requests like this one?

Anyway, looks like Pakistan have agreed to it.

So Modi begging IK paid off.

Brilliant. Now who is the begger. All the money in the world and he couldn't fly around. Cheap chai skate.

So Modi Ji requested Imran Khan to fly over Pakistan in order to attend SCO summit where he is going to criticise Imran Khan and Pakistan? Waah Modi Ji Waah! :inti

How do you expect politicians to fulfill their duties if they do not face problems that even rich individuals face, let alone the poor?

Don't understand why the government has allowed for this to happen. So much for IK'S tough talk before the elections.

Heads of states have a tight schedule. They are supposed to minimise their time waste. That's where this request embedded from.

Lol what was the need of asking in the first place then? Is this some kind of a public stunt?

All the more reason IK should have declined this request in the first place...

And so Modi begged and when Pakistan deigned to accept he changed his route.

How does Modi always manage to come out of every instance looking like a buffoon :)))

Modi is weird, he firsts pleads Pakistan to use their airspace but when they accept he changes his mind, he's like those attention seeking aunties :))

Did China block him too, otherwise that would have been a lot quicker to fly to China...

That area over China (Tibetan plateau & Takla Makan) is not used by flights due to unforgiving conditions.

First Modi and his India beg us to open the airspace then they say we don't need it. Just shows how illiterate and foolish the Indian PM is! He doesn't even have basic commonsense.

He might be illiterate of the highest order but he isn't foolish! He is an extremely cunning man, who'll look for gains in each situation. You and I don't know what gain did he find in this episode, but knowing him I'm sure, he'd have gained something out of it.

If he doesn't seek attention, how will he stay relevant?
