CWI announces schedule for West Indies v India International Home Series 2023

Visitors to play multi-format tour in July and August, including historic 100th Test between the teams

ST. JOHNS, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced the match schedule and venues for the highly anticipated West Indies versus India Men’s Series in July and August.

The Series starts with two Test matches as part of the 2023-2025 ICC World Test Championship. Windsor Park in Dominica will host the first Test match from 12-16 July. The second Test match, to be played from 20-24 July at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad, will be historic marking the 100th Test match played between the two teams.

The Test Series is followed by three CG United One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and five T20 Internationals (T20Is). The CG United ODI Series will start at Kensington Oval in Barbados with the first and second matches on 27 and 29 July. The CG United ODI Series concludes on 1 August at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad which will be hosting a West Indies Men’s ODI for the first time.

The T20Is also bowl off at Brian Lara Cricket Academy on 3 August. Guyana hosts the second and third T20Is at the Guyana National Stadium on 6 and 8 August. The T20I Series concludes in Lauderhill, Florida with a blockbuster weekend of back-to-back matches on Saturday 12 August and Sunday 13 August at Broward County Cricket Stadium.

Johnny Grave, CEO of CWI, said: “We are delighted to be able to confirm the schedule and venues for the highly anticipated visit by India. One of the highlights will be the 100th Test at the Queen’s Park Oval and this promises to be a fantastic occasion as we celebrate this historic event between these two proud cricketing nations.”

Grave added: “We also look forward to hosting India in the white ball fixtures and welcoming fans to attend the matches across the region, as well as in the United States. It will be 18 days of entertainment for cricket lovers to enjoy and savour.”

2002.

If India's selectors don't use this tour as an opportunity to introduce young blood then I don't know when they will.

They will most certainly play Gill, Pujara, Rahane and Rohit Sharma.

After the plastering they received from Australia, these pieces of furniture require an easy series where they can score a few 100s and cement their places in the team.

Sunil Gavaskar:

"I have been in the teams where we have been knocked out at 42 and we had been miserable in the change rooms. We were also criticised heavily. So, I think you cannot say that the current lot is not beyond criticism. They have to be very analytical about what happened, how they get out, why didn't they bowl well, why didn't they catch, was the selection of the Playing XI was the right thing, so all these factors have to come in,"

"You cannot brush this under the carpet like 'yeah we have got two matches against West Indies'. West Indies are not the best team in the world. You just go and hammer them 2-0, 3-0, whatever the matches are. This doesn't mean anything because when you come across and if you go to the finals and if you are playing Australia again, making the same mistakes, then how would you win the trophy?"

Siraj, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar.

India have named their squads for the two-match Test series and the three-match ODI series against West Indies in July and August.

The Test series will be the start of the World Test Championship 2023-25 squad for both India and West Indies. The ODI series will also be crucial for India as they amp up the preparation for the Cricket World Cup later in the year.

After the disappointment of the loss of the World Test Championship final against Australia at the Oval, India have made some big calls by bringing in some fresh faces for the Test setup. Veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara has been dropped from the squad, with uncapped batters Yashaswi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad being drafted in.

Jaiswal and Gaikwad had excellent seasons in the IPL, opening the batting for Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings respectively. Pacers Mukesh Kumar and Navdeep Saini are also a part of the squad, with Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav missing out. Ajinkya Rahane has also been named the vice-captain of the squad with Rohit Sharma continuing to lead. Jasprit Bumrah still misses out as he is yet to recover from his back injury.

The ODI squad also features a lot of the regulars, with Gaikwad finding himself as a part of the white ball setup as well. There is also a recall for Sanju Samsom, with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant out with injuries.

In the pace department, Mukesh Kumar is again included in the limited-overs squad, with Jaydev Unadkat and Mohammed Siraj being included as well. Umran Malik completes the pace bowling department. India have also included four spin-bowling options in the ODI squad, with Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel all making the cut.

Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI side, with Hardik Pandya named as his deputy.

The Test series will begin on 12 in Dominica and end on July 24 in Trinidad. The three-match series will follow suit and will be played between July 27 to August 1.

India are yet to name their squad for the T20I series.

Mukesh Kumar is a 29 year old trundler. He is Shardul Thakur that cannot bat.

Navdeep Saini is a joke. He is an inferior version of Umesh Yadav and that says a lot.

Jaiswal is a good selection. But not sure about Gaikwad in tests.

So Ishan Kishan who opted out of Duleep trophy, is picked in the test squad.

Well done BCCI.

Bharat who is a nothing cricketer, gets picked yet again

Ab options hai hi nahi toh wo kya kare? Aur Karo Pant ko hate jab wo Lyon ko nikal nikal kar maarta tha :inti

I don't understand, do they pick Test squads based on IPL? Is Ranji Trophy really that big of a joke?

Where's Sarfaraz Khan? I've heard so much that this guy has torn up domestic cricket

So, Gill will bat at 3 and Jaiswal open? Or they will find some other way to hold Jaiswal debut for some more time.

I don't think they have chose the squad keeping WTC & WC in minds! If Rohit Sharma captains the team I am sure we may even not reach WTC Finals and as usual a SF berth in ODI WC...

INDIA AND WEST INDIES FINED FOR SLOW OVER-RATE IN FIRST T20I

India and West Indies have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate in the first T20 International in Trinidad and Tobago on 3 August.

India was fined five per cent of their match fee for falling one over short of the minimum over rate, while West Indies have been fined 10 per cent of their match fee for falling two overs short of the minimum over rate.

Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction after Hardik Pandya and Rovman Powell’s sides were ruled to be one and two overs short respectively of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, subject to a cap of 50 per cent of the match fee.

Pandya and Powell pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the proposed sanctions, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Gregory Brathwaite and Patrick Gustard, third umpire Nigel Duguid and fourth umpire Leslie Reifer leveled the charges.

What a dirty little keeper India has. Always looking for cheap ways to get out opposition.

50 up for Pooran from just 29 balls. He has been playing very fluently. WI will need him to take them home.
He averages 50+ on this ground

It's 2-0 with three games to go. The home crowd enjoyed that victory. West Indies definitely were the better team, although they let things slip towards the ends and in the end held on to get over the line. It took a great effort from Tilak, handy contribution from Hardik and a timely hit from Bishnoi at the end for India to get to 150, which is a challenging total. And when Hardik got two in his first over, India were on top. Soon Mayers fell but Pooran counterattacked in style. 18 came off the final powerplay over and Pooran ensured his team was always ahead with hits to the fence. West Indies were cruising but Pooran's dismissal led to a dramatic collapse as West Indies lost 4 wickets for 3 runs in 13 balls. Akeal and Alzarri absorbed pressure and stitched an unbeaten 26-run for the ninth wicket to stop India from levelling the series. India should have definitely got at least 10 runs more. They had a decent time with the ball, but couldn't stop the carnage from Pooran.

India also missed a trick, i think, with reviews and by not bowling Chalal out

India is a very weak team without peak kohli. Pakistan looks a better white ball team now. IPL talents are over rated

Sanju , Hooda , Kishan , Mukesh , Venkatesh and some more whose names I can't recall. There's a long list of very ordinary cricketers that India have tried in recent times

One can say they arent paying that much attention to T20s but based upon IPL etc, one expected better results

POORAN FOUND GUILTY OF BREACHING THE ICC CODE OF CONDUCT

West Indies’ wicketkeeper Nicholas Pooran has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second T20I against India in Guyana.

Pooran was found to have breached Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.

Pooran admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction of a reprimand that was proposed by match referee, Richie Richardson, and as such there was no need for a formal hearing.

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Pooran’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred following the review of a LBW decision in the 4th over of the India innings. Pooran criticized the umpires for having to use up a player review for a decision which he thought was clearly not out.

On-field umpires Leslie Reifer and Nigel Duguid, third umpire Gregory Brathwaite and fourth official Patrick Gustard levelled the charges.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

NOTES:

*When a player reaches four or more demerit points within a 24-month period, they are converted into suspension points and a player is banned

**Two suspension points equate to a ban from one Test or two ODIs or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player

***Demerit Points to remain on a Player or Player Support Personnel’s disciplinary record for a period of twenty-four (24) months from their imposition following which they will be expunged

West Indies have managed to draw 1 Test, win 1 ODI, and win 2 T20s so far.

Great stuff. They can win the T20 series now.

According to a news source the West Indies ground staff forgot to draw the 30-yard circle which caused a 30-minute delay to the start of the match. lol, legendary stuff.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Suryakumar Yadav

India's batting was the worry in the first two games and that was mainly because their best batter - Suryakumar Yadav - had not come to the party. Today SKY soared and kept taking the game away from West Indies. Jaiswal had a forgettable debut as he threw his wicket away in the first over, but that brought Suryakumar to the crease and his first two balls were a four and a six. The tone was set and he just needed someone to support him from the other end, Tilak Varma did that perfectly. The pair were the right mix of aggression and calmness, Suryakumar kept the boundaries flowing while Varma rotated the strike. They added 87 runs for the third wicket and by the time Suryakumar got out, the game was decided. Varma stuck around and got the team over the line with skipper Hardik.

Cricket lovers in the United States are in for a special treat when West Indies host India at Broward County Stadium, in Lauderhill, Florida for the 4th and 5th Kuhl Stylish Fans T20I Series Powered by Black and White.

The West Indies and India teams arrived on Wednesday evening and trained at the venue on Thursday and Friday before the finale of the T20I Series concludes India’s tour of the West Indies and Florida with a back-to back weekend of T20 cricket. The 4th T20I starts at 10:30am on Saturday 12 August, with the 5th and final T20I match also starting at 10:30am on Sunday 13 August.

Heading into this action-packed weekend, West Indies lead the Series 2-1, after winning the first two games in Trinidad before India rebounded with a victory in Guyana on Tuesday, to setup what promises to be a blockbuster two-day showpiece in the sunshine of Greater Fort Lauderdale. At least 15,000 spectators are expected to attend, traveling in from around the USA, the Caribbean and beyond. A combined audience of over 200 million viewers will tune into the matches live on television and on their mobile devices.

Cricket West Indies, as hosts of the Kuhl Stylish Fans T20I Series Powered by Black and White, are delighted by Visit Lauderdale and the Florida Sports Foundation’s support for the event as we seek to grow awareness of and participation in cricket in the USA, especially with a significant Caribbean diaspora in North America and such large communities of Indian cricket fans. Additionally, with the USA hosting ICC 2024 T20I World Cup matches, this is a great opportunity for Broward County Stadium as USA’s leading cricket venue to be showcasing two of the most exciting teams in world cricket ahead of next year’s World Cup.

Speaking on behalf of his team shortly after arrival, West Indies Head Coach Daren Sammy said: “We’re excited to be back in Fort Lauderdale and we thank the great hosts here for welcoming us and staging the matches. We’re really looking forward to this weekend. There is a lot to play for and we really want to put on a good show for the fans. It’s always non-stop action when we play at Broward County Stadium … the atmosphere is amazing … we feel at home. The players are pumped up for what is to come in these two matches. We’d love to see local Floridians come out and enjoy.”

Stacy Ritter, President and CEO of Visit Lauderdale said: “Greater Fort Lauderdale is enormously proud to sponsor this tournament and showcase Broward County Stadium, the leading cricket stadium in the United States, to cricket fans from all over the globe.”

Ritter continued: “We welcome everyone under the sun and are delighted to host these remarkable athletes and their devoted fans in what promises to a weekend filled with great sportsmanship and competition.”

The two teams will feature some of the most dynamic and entertaining players in the cricket. West Indies are led by captain Rovman Powell and have in their ranks talismanic allrounder Jason Holder and wicket-keeper/batsman Nicholas Pooran who won the Player-of-the-Match awards in the first and second matches.

India is led by Hardik Pandya, a star performer with bat and ball, and their squad includes world stars such as Suryakumar Yadav in their powerful batting line-up and left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav leading bowling attack.

India make a mockery of West Indies' 178. Jaiswal set the tone by getting off the mark with a boundary off the very first ball of the chase. Scored 10 runs off the opening over, struck three fours off a Holder over and then hit back-to-back boundaries off Shepherd. Gill, on the other hand, was watchful at the start but he made up for that in quick time. It was an eventful powerplay with India scoring 66 runs, hitting plenty of boundaries (7 fours from Jaiswal, 3 sixes and a four from Gill) and not losing a wicket. The openers continued to score at a brisk rate and brought up the century partnership in the tenth over. Gill notched up a fifty after three successive single-digit scores and Jaiswal raised his maiden T20I fifty in the same over. West Indies looked clueless against the onslaught. The 165-run opening stand eventually came to an end when Gill holed out to deep mid-wicket but that wicket came very late for the Windies. India romped home with 18 balls to spare. Earlier, Hetmyer top-scored and Shai Hope batted well in his comeback match but 178 turned out to be inadequate.

Rovman Powell: Happy to bowl first. We have been struggling a little. But back-to-back wins put a smile on the faces of our people. I think it is a good surface. You just need to have plans for different batters. We just sat down and tried to come up with our best combination. Joseph, our premier bowler is back for McCoy.

Hardik Pandya: We will bat first. Always feel, we should challenge ourselves. It was a good track. It played better than last year. You need to be courageous on these type of wickets. Arsh has a big heart. Even if you can make a good comeback even in the last two balls, it makes a difference.

Wha does India see in Chahal? He cannot bat or field. He always goes for plenty and has a good game once every 5 games. I hope he gets booted out permanently. But miraculously he always makes a come back.

The Ind 2nd string bowling is weak but at full strength is still good. What's interesting is how poor the Ind 2nd stringers are and why so. With all the resources in the world, they have little to shoe.

West Indies have been doing well in T20 for a while. They also beat South Africa in South Africa (T20 series) recently.

The West Indies have broken a six-year drought by defeating India by eight wickets in the fifth and final T20I in Florida on Sunday to clinch the five-game series in style.

Opener Brandon King (85*) and Player of the Series Nicholas Pooran (47) were the stars of the show as the West Indies successfully chased down India's total of 165/9 with two overs remaining to ensure the Caribbean side registered the 3-2 series triumph.

It was the West Indies first T20I series victory over India since 2017, while the loss broke India's streak of 12 consecutive unbeaten bilateral series as the Asian side fell to their first series defeat in men's T20Is in more than two years.

It was a timely result for the West Indies, who failed to qualify for this year's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in India and instead now turn their focus to next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup that they will co-host alongside the USA.

Emotions were running high inside the West Indies' change room after the win and captain Rovman Powell said the players were thrilled with their efforts.

“It’s difficult to put words to it. Adjectives are inadequate in describing how we feel. The guys are elated. It’s a big series. You mention all the stuff that is going on in West Indies cricket, so it’s a very big series for us to beat India at home,” Powell said.

While India were disappointed to lose the series, they can perhaps take solace from the fact they provided some opportunity to a batch of new faces during the five matches and unearthed a couple of players that appear to have bright futures ahead.

Inexperienced duo Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma were among India's highest run scorers for the T20I component of the series, while right-arm pacer Mukesh Kumar bowled well at times during the Caribbean tour.

India coach Rahul Dravid knows there will continue to be fluctuations of form for his side should the less experienced players be persisted with.

"We did well to come from 0-2 down, but we just couldn’t close out the series today," Dravid said.

"We made a few mistakes along the way if you look at the five games, but that can happen.

"It is a young team and a developing team so there are going to be times when we have our ups and downs.

"Of course we are disappointed...credit to the West Indies as they are a good T20 side and playing in their home conditions they play particularly well."

"Kids Look Great Playing Against Kids": Sunil Gavaskar's Intriguing Take On India's T20I Series Loss

The Indian cricket team had a mixe outing on the tour of West Indies. After winning the Test series 1-0, the team somehow managed to beat the hosts in the ODI assignment 2-1. But, the T20I series was a true wake-up call. India went down 0-2 after losing the first two matches and then bounced back to win the next two, making it 2-2. But, the 5th and final T20I resulted in an embarrassing defeat, prompting many to question the state of affairs in the team.

Many rookie stars, including the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Mukesh Kumar, etc. were brought into the team. While a few of them clicked on an individual level, the team performance was widely missing. Sunil Gavaskar, an India great, gave an intriguing boys vs men analogy looking at the way the West Indies tour concluded.

"A player could do well at the franchise level, but when it comes to playing for the country, it's a different ball game of pressures and expectations. It is one step up, which can be too steep for even some of the best performers at the franchise level. How often have we seen this when the Under-19 performers just aren't able to take that one step up from a boys' tournament to a men's competition?," he wrote in a column on Sportstar.

"Yes, the kids look great playing against kids, but when they come up against the men, they suddenly find that what looks like a piece of cake at the under-19 level is more like mud at the senior level. That's why so many who looked good at the boys' level have been found wanting at the senior level. It's not just the temperament; even the skill set is way below the standard required at the franchise level. Gavaskar maintained tha the T20I series defeat against West Indies shouldn't be a dampener for the Indian team considering that the men from the Caribbean have won the T20 World Cup twice in their history.

"The loss to West Indies should not be a dampener. Don't forget that they have won the ICC T20 World Cup twice, and their players are matchwinners for the different franchises they play for in the IPL. So, they are a top-class T20 team, and there's no shame in losing to them. It should be a wake-up call, though, to see the areas where India needs to improve to strengthen its side. Some of those who were rested for this series may not be around for too long, so their replacements need to be found pretty quickly too, as the next ICC T20 World Cup is just a year away," he explained.
