Bad news: Gambhir to miss third Test against Lanka due to his sister's wedding.

As said in the other thread, I find that a bit arrogant. Would he do that if his place was not secure? And the series was in the balance?

Another example of the players doing what they like in Indian cricket.

No Aussie would do that and be selected again for a while. Not even their own wedding actually, as Adam Voges found out.

Match nearly over, Sri Lanka have been thrashed and exposed.

South African Test series should be a ripper.

No it isnt arrogant. Marriage is a lot more important in our culture that it is in yours. (No offense intended). Indian weddings are chose based on astrological dates and auspicious times. These times dont come about every few months. They are chosen based on astrological comparability with the groom as well as the bride. Its his sisters wedding and she will only be married once. Of course you want to be there. I cant think of any Indian who would oppose this.

Fair enough. Have any other Indian players in times past done the same?

I understand your point.

No Aussies would have done that. Ok. But thats more of a cultural difference.

Now if his place was not secure or the team is in bad need of him?? He may have played on and skipped the marriage, but thats more due to lack of option. Here he and the team has an option and if he can attend the marriage and team doesn't look like suffering much then why not?

I guess that is a cultural difference too. Ah well each to their own.

But the bold is pretty much why we will back at number 1 pretty soon and India may never get there. Not meaning any offence but that is a lack of focus.

Well I doubt putting family ahead of cricket is a lack of focus. If anything it shows people where your priorities now. I doubt the Indians attending a marriage here and there will affect their overall ranking. At the end of the day the better team will be number one.

Back to the match.....

Samaraweera has been amazingly consistent the past year or so. Incredible numbers for him.

You can be right. But again its what individual gives priority to.

Aus team may skip family affairs to become no. 1 and Indian may skip a test to attend family affair.

Individual choice. No one can say which is wrong.

True but I guess my point was more that he skips Test because:

a) I am in form and will get straight back in
b) we are ahead in the series

If family is family I just wonder why we have not seen more Indian players skipping matches because of it...

Have you won this game yet btw?

Well, the statistics for those sorts of things are not available to refer I guess. :) So no point worrying about that. It depends on who had a similar conflict. I remember Dravid missing a match when he became a dad. don't remember test or ODI.

We need one more wicket to seal the win.

Considering the late announcement the wedding seems to be a late decision. Not sure what the family compulsions are but it would be unthinkable for a brother to miss sister's wedding except in totally unavoidable situations.

Marriages in India are a family affair and the brother has a role to play. The brother will play some pranks on his would be brother-in-law :D
To be honest Indian culture is such that family priorities some times come first, but again this depends on how you are brought up and what you believe in.

Let Gambhir attend his sister's wedding....no big deal.

No Aussie player has skipped matches for personal reasons?

Symonds skipped some meetings because he wanted to drink :p

Wedding is probably not such a big deal (for relations, sure its big for the bride and groom) in western society.

Ponting once missed a pura cup game to attend his wife's graduation ceremony while he was captain of Tasmania.

Does not happen often and very very rarely with Test matches. Maybe someone might miss one due to family being ill or wife about to give birth.

But they usually induce the birth so it doesn't clash with the cricket.

Adam Voges did skip an ODI tour to get married, many frowned and it took him a while to get back a spot (only really because Ferguson was injured). We would generally look upon players missing matches for any reason (except death of a close family member) to be pretty soft.

Cannot imagine someone missing a match because of a sister's wedding. But then again, we have a lot more certainty in our scheduling than other countries, we know who we are playing a long way in advance and the likely dates.

The difference with that and GG situation is obviously cultural which is fair enough. What I query is that maybe he would not have missed the match had he not hit 7 hundreds in 9 Tests and India were not up in the series.

Because cannot recall other Indian players missing Test matches for that reason. If Indian crew want to trivialise this point and go :))) fine but I think is a point for consideration.

More accurate version might be Ponting once played a pura cup game because he ran out of excuses to avoid one. :D

To put it simply, cricket is work for these blokes, if they have to work on the day of the wedding they have to work. Also our weddings are a bit shorter than Indian ones ;-) so can play the day and get to part of the wedding anyway.

True along with the whole marriage as well, within a year; divorce, step kids, step fathers, you name it :D...

As one of my aussie friend says, he doesn't have a family tree. It is more of a family bush.

RA making a joke of himself again - Clarke missed matches when his girlfriend's Dad was not well and is now telling what Gambhir should do!

'Shot-gun' wedding?
